Seinfeld's First Microsoft Commercial: Not Funny

|

seinfeld-gates.jpg

Looks like skepticism was the right reaction when Microsoft announced it was hiring Jerry Seinfeld as its new $10 million pitchman. Seinfeld's first commercial starring Bill Gates is out -- shot in a mall shoe store -- and it's not going to help Microsoft look any cooler:

Update: As commenters rightly point out, the brand ad is getting its primary job done -- getting people to talk about Microsoft. And since many people think it's "cute," even if not laugh-out-loud funny, hard to see that as a bad thing.

As SAI's Henry Blodget noted last month:

The good news for Microsoft is that being cool has never been a part of its success formula. The image of Vista is beyond saving at this point--and, yet, it has outsold every previous version of Windows at this point in its lifecycle by a mile. People don't buy Microsoft products because they love them or the company: They buy them because they have no other choice (or didn't, before the Internet came along and began to break apart the Windows hegemony, making room for Apple's resurgence).

People do like Bill Gates, though. And they do like Seinfeld (though we expect his appeal is mainly to fogies like us). So maybe the ads will create some sort of a halo effect that will make people feel better about Microsoft--even as they thank the Lord they can finally buy something else.

But this still won't solve Microsoft's real problem, which has nothing to do with perception. Microsoft's real problem is that its monopoly is eroding. And even Seinfeld won't be able to change that.

Seinfeld's first commercial -- especially the awkward computer conversation at the end -- reminds us less of anything he's done for American Express or on 'Seinfeld', but more of 'Bee Movie', or this Microsoft internal spot, complete with Bruce Springsteen cover band -- which the company insisted was a joke:

Still hoping Bill and Jerry can make something memorable -- like this old Gates/Steve Ballmer ad that Spark Capital's Bijan Sabet reprises -- but not holding our breath.

Dude. When was Seinfeld ever funny?

I guess I am in the minority here, but I thought it was mildly amusing. Not on topic, and quite pointless, but amusing none the less. Oh well.
Sam said:
I agree with Sean - i think it was mildly amusing - as Seinfeld generally is. I think the joke is in the odd, uncomfortable nature of the exchange.

Hahaha! they couldn't even say the word "vista" or even put vista in the logo!!! How funny... microsoft is subtly ditching vista like they ditched windows ME.

Way to be 2-3 years late on that.

lol i'm rofl watching all the mac fan boyz protest that the ad makes no sense.

the ad is perfect.

everyone is talking about it and hanging waiting for the next vignette in the series....exactly what it was designed to do

was it funny? yes, i thought so

was it an ad? questionable

was it brand awareness? probably

is everyone talking about it? YES!!!
Agree with you, Dean. I like it. Whole idea is to make people feel good about Microsoft. And hard to watch that without smiling.

Both Gates and Seinfeld good.

Always difficult to make the "nerd" funny. Also, the stuff that Jerry did in the spot was more likely to have been done by Kramer in the old series. Shoes in the shower....Jerry from the show who everyone is familiar with would never have done that nor would he have helped Bill with the shoes. Plus, I think Bill is totally beyond likeability. And HEHATEME has no idea on any topic except the XFL.

I know you are quoting another blog, but the following confuse me...

".. [Vista] has outsold every previous version of Windows at this point in its lifecycle by a mile... They buy them because they have no other choice..."

..and..

" ..the Internet came along and began to break apart the Windows hegemony."

The Internet has been here for years but Vista still outsold previous Windows versions. Surely there is some other reason?

I used to watch Seinfeld when in Canada - pretty funny stuff!

I thought it was funny. The concept was really great. I agree it will create some buzz, but what is the goal?

If the goal is to create a new image for Bill Gates, it might help, if the goal is to say anything about Microsoft, I can't see how this is going to accomplish anything.

The Bruce Springsteen cover band video was one of the worst I have seen online in along time and the agency who developed it should be fired!
Adam said:
The ad doesn't make sense, but that might be their point since Seinfeld didn't make any sense. (still semi-humorous though) Sure it got people talking, but that's also because they are spending $300 million to "create a new image". That was publicity itself. The ad made me aware of Microsoft, but it still doesn't make me want to go out and buy anything.

Cute commercial, but way off target.

People realize MS is looking for attention, but really, everyone knows vista is a turd.

Web 2.0 apps and google like apps are going to run everything soon.

M$ is just plain outdated, and will evolve or fade.

"Seinfailed" is the better term here. I am a fan of the Seinfeld series and have even gone to a show of his - he CAN be funny. But that ad made no sense - especially the ending. I was actually embarrassed for them.

There are some decent jokes in there; I would even go so far to say that it's well written and very well directed.

but is it Cool?

Nope.

Many people fancy themselves marketing experts even if they have no clue. Cluelessness abounds on this topic. If you all think that Microsoft's goal is to make them "cool" then you're...what's the word?...dumb? Hey, Apple is cool. So way cool. Awesomely cool. Black turtleneck cool. Microsoft doesn't need or want to be cool (well...I'm sure some there would like to be but...). They need to be relevant to the lives of millions of people...many times the number who have ever seen a Mac. They need to show how Microsoft and Windows is about "we" instead of "me" (Apple is all about self-centeredness). They need to explain how they provide a huge choice of hardware, software and services from them and their partners. They don't need to be cool. If they came out with a campaign focused on that they'd be (1) dumb and (2) tilting at windmills.

I disagree. I thought this commercial was clever and very funny.

Maybe the subtle association was that they are both slightly wacky, filthy-rich, over-the-hill comedians...

Remember the "Boca Vista" Seinfeld episode? Maybe they could have done something with that...

"What's with Vista? It sounds like a retirement condo development... It's bloated and slow like a retirement condo owner... It doesn't play well with novel technologies like a slow and bloated retirement condo owner..."

Ooops, that wasn't in the right direction...
Glenn (URL) said:
the fact that i am the 22nd comment on this post offers some evidence that the first ad performed its role. i found it amusing and was intrigued because it wasn't obvious, slapstick humor and favored subtle humor. and it's obviously just a teaser. i dunno, maybe apple fans like stuff that you don't need to think about (to borrow a line from the seinfeld show).

I was/am a big fan of "Seinfeld" the sitcom and also of MSFT and Bill Gates. However, I must say that that commercial was absolutely AWFUL. I don't blame Jerry or Bill - I blame the ad agency who produced it. what they should have done was hired LARRY DAVID to write and produce it. LARRY DAVID is the real comedic genius behind "Seinfeld". This commercial was just stupid, silly, and contrived. It could have been SO MUCH better. the writers/producers of this spot did a very poor job.

now watch this if you want to see funny -

For every time I defend Microsoft, I apologize. That commercial couldn't be more out of touch with reality.

I find it impossible that a company like Crispin Porter + Bogusky sat down in a room and came up with this to try to reinvent a company's image.

It didn't even have anything to do with the number one thing casual technology users want: ease of use.

It was a "commercial about nothing." If they wanted to make a mini Seinfeld episode, mission accomplished.

If they wanted to tell anyone why we should look at Microsoft more closely, mission not accomplished.

I was personally embarrassed. Is the next commercial going to be about Jerry and Bill going to Schnitz's to buy a marble rye???

JP said:
"Is that your toe?"
"Nope...it's leather."

LOL...hilarious! That line makes no sense, but it cracks me up. And really it is the chemistry between the two (and the stark difference in their personalities) that makes this memorable. And, while not the package, making it memorable is HUGE in advertising.

Bill is like quite and awkward and Jerry acts like he has ADD - "Churro?" "Ever shower while dressed?" "What do you get with that card?" "Are they going to make computers moist and chewy?"

Brilliant!
David said:
I still find the most amusing part of this whole thing is that as per usual, the cult of the Apple devotees take this as an opportunity to bash all things Windows. Meanwhile, Apple's ridiculously proprietary mentality marches on. Apple puts together great products, but I think the best comment about this new ad came from someone who said that "just wait, soon Apple will come out with an OS X that will be functional across all machines everywhere"...in what alternate universe would that happen?
mark said:
Call me stupid or something but I didn't get it (and I didn't find it funny but maybe it's funny to twentysomethings or teens or tweens). Hopefully, this is part of a series and the next ad will clue me in.

So yes, marketing is to get people to talk. But it's far better if they talk about something good than something bad. Plenty of people have spent millions of hours talking about Vista, and I'm sure Microsoft hasn't found that that discussion to be good marketing.

The new Seinfeld adds resemble Kevin Costner's tragic career. Seinfeld was attempting to do the same jokes/routine that he tried to do as a younger man. He just looks old in the spot.

How ironic that I saw this piece of crap during last nights episode of Mad Men. While I watched the folks from "Cooper Sterling" pitch a coffee company ?Mortinsons? on a "new, hip & young" coffee campaign, Microsoft wheeled out 2 old & very unfunny men in possibly the lamest attempt at humor ever...hands fucking down...way to connect w/ your audience!!!!

I really got a kick out of the beginning when "billy" and "jerry" find it necessary to announce each others names... It's so typical of Microsoft(R) itself, the word Microsoft(R) is all over every other screen and menu you look at on their products. The one really laughing here is "jerry" who is laughing all the way to the bank. I would be laughing too if I was paid all that money to make a commercial. LOL!!! NO company NO matter how big...even the mighty Microsoft(R) can BUY being COOL... it's not for sale, either you ARE cool or you are NOT.. All that money "billy" has and you always see him wearing some dull business shirt....LOL......
