Now Available In The New York Times: Nobel Prize-Winning Blogger

krugman.jpgTake that, Frank Rich! NYT:

Paul Krugman, a professor at Princeton University and an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times, was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science on Monday.

Mr. Krugman received the award for his work on international trade and economic geography. In particular, the prize committee lauded his work on for “having shown the effects of economies of scale on trade patterns and on the location of economic activity.” He has developed models that explain observed patterns of trade between countries, as well as what goods are produced where and why. Traditional trade theory assumes that countries are different and will exchange different kinds of goods with each other; Mr. Krugman’s theories have explained why worldwide trade is dominated by a few countries that are similar to each other, and why some countries might import the same goods that it exports.

Mr. Krugman has been an Op-Ed columnist at the New York Times since 1999, and continues to teach at Princeton. In 1991 Mr. Krugman received the John Bates Clark medal, a prize given every two years to “that economist under forty who is adjudged to have made a significant contribution to economic knowledge.”

The Times neglects the most important part of Krugman's CV: He is a crazily prolific blogger. Here's how he covered his own news this morning:

More from Joe Weisenthal at Clusterstock:

Tyler Cowen notes that this is truly a "real world pick", a nod to economists who write concretely about economics directed towards the public and to policy makers. Cowen also has a good set of links to help familiarize yourself with his work. He points fondly to Krugman's critique of Austrian trade cycle theory and a paper on why Brits have such bad food.

You also have to wonder whether the choice was seen as an anti-Bush pick, given Krugman's consistent criticism of the current administration.

Disheartening. Krugman ceased to be a legitimate economist long ago, and is now just another socialist sounding-board.

This is just stupidity. Krugman is a quack economist. To begin with, Princeton hardly has any legitimate economists and Krugman is the bottom of the heap. Silly Swedes, Krugman is for idiots.

I can't believe he won this award. I attended some of his classes when he taught at the Kennedy School. While interesting and entertaining, he's one of those people that live off of other people's work. He's incredibly adept at copying, usurping and synthesizing other people's ideas and work, but has never had a good idea of his own (this was rumored to be the reason he "left" Harvard). He's perfect for blogging, but I would challenge him and anyone if they can find a single unique idea that was not published somewhere else, or at least in one of his student's papers!

So I take it all of the people that have commented so far would reject the Nobel Prize outright being that it doesn't have any meaning any more to them.

What a joke these people are. This truly is a case of anti-intellectualism. These are strange times.

Memo to the world: All schools are equal. The University of North Florida's economic program is the equivalent to Princeton's.

Harvard educated? Well, as long as you want to school that offers English 101, its the same thing.

Rhodes Scholar? Ehhhhh. Big deal. I know a guy who got a partial stipend to go to my local vocational school. He's a real American. He's much more American than anyone who went to the University of Chicago.

What? You received a degree in astrophysics from Cal Berkeley? A lot of good that will do me. You should have gone to Liberty University in Virginia and got a degree in Theology.

Wharton School? Just another elitist institution. No different than East Carolina University.

Damn people with their knowledge and thoughts.
