As the 50th anniversary of America's revolution against colonialism and the divine right of kings approached, the author of the rebellion's founding document -- still alive at age 83 --was asked to attend a July 4, 1826, celebration in Washington.

Alas, Thomas Jefferson could not make the journey from his beloved Monticello. The infirmity that had narrowed the great traveler's range would claim him (and his old rival John Adams), with an irony the the essential founder would have appreciated, on the anniversary itself.

But the invitation from Washington gave Jefferson an opportunity to speak one last time to the nation he and his contemporaries had forged into being.

And his counsel, as always, was not just to maintain the spirit of the '76 but to raise the banner of liberty higher so that all the world could rally to its promise.

May (July 4) be to the world, what I believe it will be, to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all: the signal of arousing men to burst the chains under which monkish ignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and to assume the blessings and security of self government.

That form (of government) which we have substituted, restores the free right to the unbounded exercise of reason and freedom of opinion.

All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man.

The general spread of the light of science has already laid open, to every view, the palpable truth (that) the mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately, by the Grace of God.

These are grounds of hope for others. For ourselves, let the annual return of this day forever refresh our recollections of these rights, and an undiminished devotion to them.

Remarkably, George Bush will visit Monticello on this, the 232nd celebration of the nation's revolt against a king named George.

Were Jefferson around, he would not be greeting Bush. The man who counseled that Americans would have to be ever on their guard against those who might turn the presidency into the tool of their "elected despotism" would surely be protesting not just the visit but the very notion of Bush's crudely constructed and violently executed presidency.

But, true to his nature, Jefferson would see those "grounds for hope" that he referred to in his last message.

Surely, he would have delighted in the advertisement in Thursday's New York Times that announced "A Declaration for Our Times" -- a variation on the Declaration of Independence that, in the spirit of the original document, rejects sacrifices of basic liberties in the name of security.

The declaration is signed by 500 individual Americans and organizations -- including this writer -- the who pledge support for fully restoring Constitutional rights and human rights in a United States steered dangerously off course during the Bush interregnum.

The Declaration is part of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee's "People's Campaign for the Constitution," which has been launched to organize grassroots coalitions in communities across the country to demand that 2008 election candidates get serious about renewing rights that have been seriously undermined and threatened during the Bush-Cheney interregnum.

"Many Americans feel dispirited by the continuing array of freedom-robbing laws, policies, and government actions, including warrantless domestic spying, torture and unlimited detentions, which they see as un-American," says BORDC director Nancy Talanian. "In this Declaration, we are calling out the administration for usurping our constitutional rights and committing ourselves to resolving our grievances through all lawful means available, as the founding fathers did."

Talanian and the BORDC have been tireless champions of the Constitution in general and the Bill of Rights in particular during a period when the president and vice president have aggressively assaulted our liberties and when, for the most part, Congress has let them get away with it.

After the Patriot Act was passed in 2001 – with support from all but one senator, Wisconsin's Russ Feingold -- it was the BORDC that launched a nationwide campaign asking city, county and state governments to go on record for upholding the Constitutional rights of their citizens. Eight states and more than 400 communities acted, and members of Congress repeatedly cited the outpouring of support for the Bill of Rights when they addressed concerns about the Patriot Act.

But, Talanian admits, there is a big difference between getting the notice of responsible members of Congress and getting the United States to recommit itself to the cause of liberty that inspired our revolution against another King George.

Just as they did in the fall of 2001, the White House and its congressional allies are on this 222nd anniversary of America's declaration of independence from kingly oppressions preparing a new assault on liberty. Instead to asserting aggressively and without apology that the 4th amendment to the Constitution guarantees a right to privacy, the Senate is by all accounts preparing to join the House in giving "legitimacy" to George Bush's spying on Americans and immunity to the telecommunications corporations that assist his warrantless wiretapping schemes.

"It is an immeasurable tragedy that on July 4th, 2008, the United States Congress appears poised to pass a bill that would betray the spirit of July 4th, 1776, by radically expanding the president's spying powers and granting immunity to the companies that colluded in his illegal surveillance program," declares the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which signed the Declaration.

The privacy fight is just one of the many struggles that will only be resolved by electing a Congress that is committed to Constitutional renewal. And such a Congress will only be elected if the people demand a new direction.

"The people need to organize themselves locally and to meet with legislators and candidates face to face," says Talanian. "After all, the US government was created to serve the people. Therefore, we need to set the government's agenda and communicate to our representatives clearly that we are unwilling to accept suspensions of our liberties and of anyone's human rights in exchange for our government's promises of greater security."

Those words may offend the sensibilities of despots, but they are poetry to patriots.

And this day, like the future Jefferson envisioned, belongs to the patriots.

   The founders of this country regarded the government, not as a master of the people, but as

   a servant. The government provides the following functions: law enforcement by local police to

   protect men from criminals; a judicial system with courts to decide the outcome of disputes

   among men; a military force to protect men from foreign aggressors. Since the government is the

   only entity which holds a monopoly on the legal use of physical force, its actions must be strictly defined

   and limited.

   If we want to escape the horrors of totalitarianism, then we must restore America as a free

   and independent constitutional republic and re-establish the primacy and sovereignty of the

   individual and the supremacy of individual rights. We must rigidly define and limit the actions

   and scope of the U.S. government, whose sole purpose is to protect and defend our unalienable

   individual rights. States should claim sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment and demand

   that the actions of the U.S. government be strictly limited to those delegated by the

   Constitution. The Tenth Amendment reads: "The Powers not delegated to the United States by

   the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to

   the people."

   The Constitution lists all of the powers of the federal government. It has no other powers. If

   a power is not listed, then the federal government does not have it. The federal government has

   insinuated itself illegally and unconstitutionally into every area of our culture: health care,

   education, our economic activities, and law enforcement, to name a few. Its socialistic

   regulations and controls are taking the place of voluntary exchange of goods and services. Our

   government has arrogated to itself such vast powers that America is now on the verge of

   becoming a police state--the stage of rule by brute force.

   Socialists have turned this nation into a welfare state, not because they are concerned about

   the health and well-being of Americans, but because they want to expand the power of the

   government. They have used the Marxist concept of the progressive income tax, the policy of

   redistributing the nation's wealth, the social security program, and other welfare state practices

   and programs to concentrate power in the State at the expense of individual freedom. Under the

   guise of "doing good," they are increasingly using the legal force of government--armed,

   organized police force--to direct and control the activities of Americans.

   Communitarians have worked to undermine Christian moral principles and to eradicate the

   concept of right and wrong. Communitarian masters are training Americans to embrace with

   religious intensity a sense of community and to accept Communism as the ONLY religion.

   The United States was not founded as a communitarian nation, but as a Christian nation. All

   of the Founding Fathers acknowledged the existence of Almighty God and acknowledged his

   Divine Providence.

   George Washington said, "It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of

   almighty God, to obey His will...."

   Patrick Henry said, "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation

   was founded...on the gospel of Jesus Christ! For this very reason peoples of other faiths have

   been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here."

   James Madison said, "We have staked the future upon the capacity of each and all of us to

   govern ourselves, to sustain ourselves, according to the Ten Commandments of God."

   The purpose of the Clinton-Gore Administration's communist environmental controls and

   regulations and land grabs is not to protect "endangered species," improve the air, save the

   forests, and so forth, but to expand its power, i.e., to achieve government control or ownership of land

   and production. Our socialist leaders, both past and present, have been successfully

   implementing this measure: the government now owns 90 percent of Alaska, 83 percent of the

   state of Nevada, 64 percent of Utah, 62 percent of Idaho, 60 percent of Oregon, and nearly half

   of the land in Wyoming and California. Forty-two percent of the land in the United States is

   now owned by federal, state, and local government.

   Furthermore, the Communists aim to persuade Americans to believe that the Constitution is

   outdated and that our constitutional system is obsolete; capture both the Democratic and

   Republican parties (this goal has been achieved); undermine America's moral ideals and

   cultural values by flooding the country with immigrants from Socialist and Communist nations;

   promote the UN and expand GATT, NAFTA, NATO, and other UN-affiliated military alliances

   and trade blocs; make Americans believe that the economy is booming, while, at the same time,

   setting this country up for an economic collapse.

   We are not experiencing an economic miracle, and the state of our Union is precarious.

   Leaders of the present administration are manipulating the nation's finances, and their

   promoting the creation of service-sector employment, and the categories having the highest job

   people's savings are being drained, their taxes are being squandered, and the nation's resources

   are being exhausted. The soaring supply of printing press money, of easy credit, and of record trade

   deficits is moving us rapidly in the direction of national financial disaster.

   In order to render America defenseless, globalist communitarians are shifting

   manufacturing, fuel and food production overseas, making America dependent on its enemies

   for food, fuel and manufactured products, and effecting the unilateral disarmament of the

   United States. We are becoming increasingly dependent on Communist and Socialist nations,

   such as Red China, Mexico, and other nations, for essential products. A nation dependent upon its

   enemies for food can be starved into submission, and without an adequate defense industrial base it

   cannot defend itself against a prolonged military attack.

   In the November 2000 ACCT newsletter, William J. Gill writes, "As far back as 1987 the

   Army Chief of Staff, General John A. Wickham, warned the U. S. should not get into a war that

   could last more than a few months because the industrial production capacity could not

   support it. Since then more than 700 steel mills shut down, our domestic oil production fell

   sharply, and the refining capacity for oil has atrophied. Today, China is No. 1 in steel. The U.S.

   is a distant fifth behind the European Union, Japan, Russia, and No. 1 China! [In 1960 we had

   nearly 60% of the world's total steel capacity. Now it is barely 10%.]" Globalists are gutting the

   nation and, from high-tech industries to shoe factories, they are virtually giving over industrial

   WASHINGTON (AP) - A former Army scientist who was named as a person of interest in the 2001 anthrax attacks will receive $5.8 million to settle his lawsuit against the Justice Department. Steven Hatfill claimed the Justice Department violated his privacy rights by speaking with reporters about the case.

   Settlement documents were filed in federal court Friday. Both sides have agreed to the deal, according to the documents, and as soon as they are signed, the case will be dismissed.

   The deal requires the Justice Department to pay $2.825 million up front and buy Hatfill a $3 million annuity that will pay him $150,000 each year for 20 years.

   "Our government failed us, not only by failing to catch the anthrax mailers but by seeking to conceal that failure," Hatfill's lawyers said in a statement. "Our government did this by leaking gossip, speculation, and misinformation to a handful of credulous reporters."

   The statement also blamed journalists for not questioning the motives of the government's statements or its tactics.

   "As an innocent man, and as our fellow citizen, Steven Hatfill deserved far better," they said.

   The Justice Department said the settlement was in the best interest of the nation.

   "The United States does not admit to any violation of the Privacy Act and continues to deny all liability in connection with Dr. Hatfill's claims," Justice Department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse said in response to the settlement.

   Five people were killed and 17 sickened by anthrax that was mailed to lawmakers on Capitol Hill and members of the news media in New York and Florida just weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

   After the attacks, Attorney General John Ashcroft called Hatfill "a person of interest" in the investigation and stories by various reporters followed. Hatfill had worked at the Army's infectious diseases laboratory from 1997 to 1999. The anthrax attacks remain unsolved.

   The settlement likely also means that former USA Today reporter Toni Locy will no longer face up to $5,000-a-day in fines in the case. A federal judge ordered her to identify the officials who discussed Hatfill. When she said she couldn't remember, the judge ordered her to identify all her sources on the anthrax case.

   She challenged that order, but a federal appeals court has yet to rule in the case. Because Hatfill's lawsuit is being settled, Locy's case will probably be dismissed as moot, though that will be up to the appeals court. Hatfill's lawyers told the court Friday that they no longer need her testimony.

   "I hope this means that this ordeal is over and that I can get on with my life," Locy said. "I am pleased that Dr. Hatfill's lawyers are now saying they no longer need my testimony, but I don't know if my appeal is moot or if the contempt order against me will be lifted because I don't have anything at this point from the Court of Appeals or Judge Walton that says I'm in the clear."

   'I was so angry when I read the letter, I broke out in tears. Whoever this person is knew in advance what was going to happen and created a suitable, well-fitted scapegoat for this action. You do not need to be a Nobel Laureate to put two and two together." (2) (emphasis added)

   If we find out who would have wanted to frame Dr. Assaad in particular, and Arabs in general, we will likely find out who was behind the anthrax murders. That the wording of the anthrax letters was contrived in such a manner as to frame Arabs/Muslims is so self evident that even a mentally retarded child could see through it. Here is the wording of the Daschle letter:

   "You cannot stop us. We have this anthrax. You die now. Are you afraid? Death to America. Death to Israel. Allah is great." (3). and the Brokaw letter:

   "This is next. Take Penacilin now. Death to America. Death to Israel. Allah is great." (4)

   Give me a break!!!!!!!!! Ask yourself. Who would want to frame Arabs? Who would want to link the interests of the US and the interests of Israel in the obvious way these ridiculous letters attempt to? Remember the Lavon Affair? Remember the USS Liberty? Remember the dancing Israelis? Remember Netanyahu saying 9-11 was good for US-Israeli relations?

   A good place to start searching for the culprit is the US bio-weapons lab at Fort Detrick, MD. The Ames strain of anthrax has in fact been traced to Fort Detrick, where Assaad once worked until he was laid off in 1997. After he was let go from Fort Detrick, Assaad filed a federal discrimination suit based upon the brutal abuse and harassment that he had endured from some highly suspicious co-workers. In 1991, Assaad found an 8 page poem in his mailbox which became a courtroom exhibit. The poem had 235 lines, many of them lewd and sexually explicit, mocking Assaad. Along with the poem, the perpetrators left Assaad a rubber camel with a large penis attached to it. (5) This was an obvious attempt to mock Assaad's Arab ethnicity. Assaad said that when he brought the poem to the attention of his supervisor, Col. David Franz, Franz kicked him out of his office! (6) Now these weren't immature college kids doing this. This outrageous emotional abuse was carried out by highly trained scientists who obviously wanted to force Assaad out.

   The scientist who was the ring-leader in these horrible attacks on Dr. Assaad was Dr. Lt. Col. Philip Zack. Philip Zack was to "voluntarily" leave Fort Detrick shortly after Assaad brought Zack's poem and camel to the attention of his supervisors. (7) Strike one on Dr. Zack!

   In an unrelated matter, another Fort Detrick researcher, Dr. Mary Beth Downs told army investigators that on several occasions in January and February of 1992, she had come to work several times to discover that someone had been conducting anthrax research after hours. (8)

   Who could that have been? Documents from that 1992 inquiry confirm that an unauthorized person was observed on a surveillance camera being let into the lab at 8:40 PM on January 23, 1992. Who was this unauthorized person caught sneaking into the bio-weapons lab, during the same time period that anthrax research was being done after hours? It turned out to be Lt. Col. Philip Zack! (9) The same Zack who was forced to resign a year earlier because of his horrible abuse of Dr. Assaad. Strike two on Dr. Zack!

   Why would Dr. Zack and others have such an animosity towards Dr. Assaad? What would motivate him to help write a 235 line hate poem? What motive would he have to frame Arabs for the deadly anthrax murders? Well, some research into the name "Zack" reveals that it is a fairly common jewish surname, derived from the Old Testament "Zacharias". Dr. Zack is Jewish, and given his obvious, fanatical hatred of Arabs - we can safely deduce that he is a hard core Zionist. Strike three on Dr. Zack!

   All of the above is public information. Assaad's 1990's legal proceedings, Dr. Down's testimony, the surveillance video of Zack sneaking into Fort Detrick one year after he had "resigned"- it's all there. The Hartford Courant exposed all of these facts (10) as did the Toronto Globe and Mail, (11) the Seattle Times, (12) and other publications. Just the facts contained in Hartford Courant story alone should be enough to at least indict Philip Zack. So why didn't we see Dr. Zack's face on our TV screens? Why hasn't Dr. Zack been given a lie detector test? What forces in the media and the government are protecting Zack from being exposed as the logical prime suspect?

   The plot thickens (and sickens) even more. It is not my intent to smear, defame, or offend jewish people here. But to not mention the ethnicity of certain players in this fantastic drama would be like writing an expose on the Italian Mafia without mentioning that it's major players are Italians. Remember, some of the Zionists�f harshest critics are themselves jewish.

   Dr. Assaad had been cleared and Dr. Zack was coming under a small amount of media and FBI suspicion. Enter, from stage left, one Barbara Rosenberg, a jewish environmentalist professor and political activist with no expertise in bio-warfare. (13) Rosenberg suddenly went public with the claim that she knew who the anthrax killer was. (14) She was supported in this effort by another Zionist New York Times journalist named Nicholas D. Kristof, who openly called for the arrest of the innocent American scientist named Dr. Stephen Hatfill. (15)

   Quietly and behind the scenes, Rosenberg began directing investigators towards Dr. Hatfill (and therefore away from Dr. Zack). The Washington Post confirmed that it was Rosenberg who helped put authorities on the trail of the innocent Dr. Hatfill. (16)

   The name of Hatfill trickled forth from the news media. In a matter of weeks, the trickle became a media flood. Dr. Hatfill became a household name. Hatfill called a news conference to protest his innocence. There was never even a shred of evidence against him and he even passed an FBI lie detector test. (17) But the Zionist controlled media lynch mob, led by the evil Rosenberg and the yellow journalist Kristoff, continued to pursue and harass Hatfill. Dr.Hatfill will never be imprisoned, but his life and career have been destroyed by these false allegations and the media hype. Lt. Col. Zack is off the hook.

   What these mad Zionist scientists and their media brethren have done to Dr. Assaad and Dr. Hatfill is monstrous beyond belief. It is clear that these anthrax letters were first intended to be an anti-Arab frame up with Assaad meant to take the blame. When that didn't work, these fanatical Zionists (who always stick together like glue!) put the media and the FBI on poor Dr. Hatfill's back, and wrecked his career and reputation in the process.    And we have been told lesser lies about 9/11. You don't have to have read the books of David Ray Griffin to know these things, but it helps.

   At the Twin Towers, the fires burned neither long enough nor hot enough to cause the steel to weaken, much less melt. Jet fuel is primarily kerosene, most of which burned up in those spectacular fireballs. If it could have such effects, our Coleman lanterns and camping stoves would melt when we use them.

   The towers were pulverized from the top down. Each floor stands motionless awaiting its destruction. They were turned into very fine dust and the buildings were destroyed to below ground level. There were no "pancakes".

   WTC-7 was destroyed by a classic controlled demolition at 5:20 PM. All of its floors fell together in a complete, abrupt, and symmetrical collapse in about 6.5 seconds. When it was over, there was a stack of about 7 floors of "pancakes". Their modes of demolition were quite different.

   Earlier, at 4:57 PM, the BBC reported that WTC-7 had collapsed, 23 minutes before the event occurred. If anyone wonders whether there is any collusion between the intelligence agencies, the government, and the mass media, I cannot imagine a better example.

   The Pentagon presents many oddities. Pilots for 9/11 Truth has taken the black box data that the National Transportation Safety Board says came from the plane that hit the building and discovered that the data corresponds to a flight with a different approach and altitude than the official account describes.

   It was too high at 300 feet to have taken out any lampposts and, one second from the building, it was 100 feet too high to have impacted with it. Such a plane may have swooped over the Pentagon, but it could not have hit it.

   Moreover, two lime-green civilian fire trucks were on the scene almost immediately and extinguished the fires in the first 15-20 minutes. The billowing black clouds that were later observed from the Capitol came from a series of enormous dumpsters in front of the building rather than from the building itself. They were a special effect. We are being played for saps.

   Apologists for the government insist that there is so little debris at the crash site in Shanksville because the plane crashed into an abandoned mine shaft!

   Well, we know what to do with miners trapped in mine shafts: We bring out the heavy equipment and work non-stop in the hope that someone may have miraculously survived. But that was not done in Shanksville.

   An Air Force officer who is an expert on plane crashes, Colonel George Nelson (retired), has told me that it looked to him as though someone had taken a bulldozer, dug a trench, filled it with trash, and blown it up!

   The motives for mass murder must have been powerful. What happens when we "follow the money"?

   Larry Silverstein took control of the World Trade Center on 24 July 2001 and promptly insured it for $3.5 billion against terrorist attacks. When there were two planes, he claimed "double indemnity" and asked for $7 billion, settling for $4.6. Not bad for a six week's investment of $114 million.

   Security and Exchange Commission records stored in WTC-7 were destroyed when that building was brought down. They not only included documents from the Enron case but many other major investigations of financial and banking interests.

   The fines and penalties could have totaled hundreds of millions, even billions. But information necessary to conduct those investigations has now been destroyed.

   Donald Rumsfeld acknowledged the day before 9/11 that the Pentagon had lost track of $2.3 trillion. He did that on a Monday, which was very odd for an experienced politician, who would know that reporters would dog him all week and the story would "grow legs".

   Ordinarily, you would wait until Friday with a story like this, hoping that it might be lost among weekend sports and other news. It is as if he knew that something would occur to wipe this from consciousness so he could waltz back into the halls of Congress and ask for hundreds of billions more in defense spending--which is exactly what he did!

   Halliburton of course is profiting mightily from $100 billion, no bid, cost-plus contracts, which means that, no matter how much you spend on a project, you can add your profit on top of it.

   Dick Cheney still has some 400,000 shares of stock in Halliburton in a not so blind "trust".

   And the gas and oil industry is benefiting immeasurably. Consider the case of Afghanistan as an illustration.

   Before 9/11, we negotiated on behalf of Unocal with the Taliban over a pipeline to be built in northern Afghanistan, telling them that if they allowed it, we would bathe them in gold, and if not, we would bathe them in bombs. They didn't and, after 9/11, we did.

   Today that pipeline is under construction, there are two permanent bases ideally positioned to support it, the President of Afghanistan is a former Unocal oil official, and our Ambassador to Afghanistan is another Unocal oil official. This is not rocket science.

   Condoleezza Rice asked the Taliban to turn Osama over to the United States for prosecution. They replied that they would do that on the condition that she produce proof that he had been involved. She said she would but never got around to it. She must have more pressing engagements."

    BAGHDAD – How are you spending your 4th of July holiday? While most Americans probably slept, 1,215 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines raised their right hands and committed to a combined 5,500 years of additional service during the largest reenlistment ceremony in the history of the American military. Beneath a large American flag which dwarfed even the enormous chandelier that Saddam Hussein had built for the Al Faw Palace, members of all services, representing all 50 states took the oath administered by Gen. David Petraeus, Commander of Multi-National Forces Iraq.

    Petraeus, reiterating earlier remarks made by Command Sergeant Major Hill, said that the unprecedented ceremony sends a "message to friend and foe alike." He told those assembled that it is "impossible to calculate the value of what you are giving to our country . . . For no bonus, no matter the size, can adequately compensate you for the contribution each of you makes as a custodian of our nation's defenses."

    Last year Gen. Petraeus, along with Senator John McCain, presided over a similar Independence Day ceremony. Then only 588 servicemen reenlisted. This year's event, more than twice as large, saw the equivalent of two battalions extend their service in America's military. Nearly the entire rotunda was filled with reenlisting servicemen, their voices drowning out all other noise. For two days the military members, flown in for the occasion from all across Iraq, have toured the elaborate palace where Saddam's sons were said to have entertained friends lavishly and tortured enemies mercilessly in the basement dungeon. Following the ceremony, they were treated to Chicago deep dish pizza donated by Lou Malnati's Restaurant and flown fresh by DHL for the occasion.

    Among those in attendance were service members from the more than two dozen Allies serving with MNF-I. Along with their American counterparts, each appeared in awe of the sacrifice of these incredible men and women. Each of the reenlistees knows full well the costs of war, and yet, they chose to stand with their units, their mission, and each other. It was as humbling an experience as I have ever witnessed. On this 4th of July, while you celebrate around grills and coolers all across America, keep in mind the 1,215 who allow us that privilege.

Firstly, you have no evidence whatsoever that any Americans rights have been infringed. The only people that are being pinched are foreign nationals which we have pretty good reason to believe have terrorist ties.     I strongly disagree with you. I will only continue to lend working class support to this site as long as people like Rese and John Nichols, who I am now thoroughly convinced has never even looked at the pictures in any of the various books on the Founding Fathers, can continue to have their views aired here.

    The site should be about freedom no matter how absurd some people's opinions are.
