| A.J. Burnett Rumors »
By Tim Dierkes [July 24, 2008 at 4:22pm CST]
Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus has some rumors to consider this afternoon.
- The Tigers are 5.5 games out, but are still on the fence about buying or selling.
- Carroll says there's "much more substance to rumors of the White Sox going after Justin Duchscherer" as compared to the one about the A's pursuing Jason Bay.
- The Phillies could jump back in on A.J. Burnett if the price comes down. Also - could Burnett clear waivers in August?
- The Rockies' demands for Brian Fuentes might be holding up the relief market.
- Regarding Raul Ibanez, the Mariners either want to tack Jose Vidro on in a deal or get back premium prospects.
- The White Sox have become aggressive, and apparently had failed talks about Orlando Cabrera with the Red Sox. Josh Fields is not considered untouchable.
Man if Sox fans even think about putting a deal together around Josh Fields and Juan Silverio, I'm gonna be pissed. PEOPLE! HE IS THE MAJORS ERA LEADER!!! He is gonna command more than a AAAA guy and an overrated prospect. Start with Aaron Poreda and Jose Martinez to get the ball rolling.

Obviously I'm refering to Duchsherer.

He may be the majors ERA leader but he is not without issues, namely health, track record of starting in the majors and the fact that the whole league know he isn't a sub-2.00 pitcher. I think a Poreda and Fields deal would be a very good return.

Josh Fields is not a AAAA player. He would be starting on the White Sox right now if they didn't have Joe Crede. I know he isn't destroying the ball right now but he is still VERY valuabule, especially to the A's, who badly need a third basemen. Obviously, Duchsherer is going to decline slightly. He won't win the ERA crown. He is at peak value and Beane usually moves players at peak value. Obviously I know he didn't with Joe Blanton but with Rich Harden and Dan Haren he did. I think if the A's got Fields for Duchscherer it would be a steal.

I mean Poreda and Fields, not just Fields by himself.

Alright thank you Joe, I was going to go crazy Fields for Duchsherer would be a steal. A steal for the Sox. Poreda and Fields is a fair deal. Obviously I'm biased since I'm an A's fan, but I'd want Jose Martinez in that deal.
But coming from the Sox point of view, this is their time to pounce on that division, the two teams picked to finish in front of them have stalled, so they should go guns blazing to get to the play-offs.

FREAKING TYPEKEY!!!
Alright, yeah thanks for adding Poreda to that deal. Fields for Duke would be a steal. A steal for the Sox. Poreda and Fields for Duke in my point of view, an A's fan, is fair, But I'd like Jose Martinez added to that deal. That would yet again show the genius behind the A's.

I don't think the White Sox have anything TO deal for Duke, do they?

Billy Beane is going to want at least 2 Top 10 White Sox prospects. Poreda works but I don't see the White Sox moving him for Duchscherer. Fields is not a Top 10 prospect. A's don't need to get a 3B in return. Eric Chavez is still in the A's plan. Chavez just needs to finally get healthy.
If Chavez's time at 3B with the A's were done, I think the A's would have done something earlier concerning 3B. Jack Hannahan was never the answer. He is a career Minor Leaguer. Hannahan was brought in to be a Band-Aid.
If Joe Blanton was worth 2 Top 10 prospects, there is no doubt Duchscherer is worth at least that maybe more.
Please do not try to send us your team's top 3B prospect for the League ERA leader. The A's are not concerned about 3B for the time being.

A 6'6 Lefty that throws 97 mph and a 25 year old 3b that has the power to hit 35+ homers for a 31 year old career reliever? I'll pass on that one.....

jolstead, while I 100% agree with you about Blanton being worth 2 top ten, Duke should be worth at least that much and then some.
I do think the A's need a 3B of the future, the only one we have in the system currently is Chris Carter, yes he moved back there, but he has some glove issues to work on. So some where down the line we do need a 3B. I was actually a little disappointed when the A's drafted Weeks over the local kid Brett Wallace. Chavy isn't getting the job done, so we need someone to be ready to come up.

I do not disagree with the fact we need some help with 3B in the farm system.
My problem is that it seems on this message board, everybody wants to send the A's a 3B prospect. If Billy Beane wanted 3B prospects, Billy would have gotten some with the past year of trading.
Odds are Chris Carter will peter out some where along the line. Jemile Weeks was a good draft pick for the A's. A 2B with the potential to be at the Major League level within a year or two. I'm pretty sure that if the A's knew that they were going to get Cardenas and Patterson, the A's would have drafted in another direction. Brett Wallace would have been a solid choice regardless.
It's pretty safe to say Mark Ellis' days in Oakland are over. Love the guy, but there is no way you pay a guy with his hitting stats the amount of money he will command.
The fact that the A's are stockpiling OF, 2B, and P is interesting. It sure looks like future trade chips.

Benae would love to get his hands on Fields; I would agree with Soxside, I wouldn't give up 2 young studs for a 31-year old swingman. He's very unproven as a starter, still.
Posted by: ballerwhiteboy | July 24, 2008 at 08:51 PM
well then baller, you won't be getting the Duke of ERA. He is not going to come cheap. And Josh Fields is definatley cheap! A top prospect is necessary for this deal to happen.

Ari -
To some team yes, the Sox aren't in need of Duke though. They would like to have him, but they don't NEED him. I dunno if Kenny wants to ship all of his top prospects to OAK. (remember swisher trade)

What about Carroll's mention of BRob? HA! Another Roberts to Chicago thread coming...this time with the Sox?! Oh dear.
Considering the value McPhail ascribes to BRob, I just can't see this happening. What would the White Sox give up? Poreda and Fields? Silverio, Martinez, and Allen?
God, I love the trade deadline!
