Rosenthal's Latest: Fuentes, Sherrill, Nady, Kemp, Guthrie

New Rosenthal.  Let's take a look.

  • Rosenthal says the Marlins are in on Brian Fuentes and other top relievers, and they're more focused on bullpen help than a catcher.  The Marlins' interest in Fuentes was first reported by the Denver Post's Troy E. Renck on July 9th.
  • Sources tell Rosenthal that the Brewers aren't likely to pay up for a top reliever like George Sherrill.  Rosenthal considers the Angels the best fit for Sherrill, but doesn't say whether they're actually interested.
  • The Braves probably won't discuss Tim Hudson; they'll need him for next year.
  • Rosenthal wonders whether the Phillies will entertain trades for Brett Myers in the offseason.
  • The Phillies inquired on some interesting hitters: Matt Holliday, Xavier Nady, and Matt Kemp.
  • The Rockies asked the Orioles about Jeremy Guthrie, but he's not available.
  • The Mets may not consider Casey Blake even of a difference-maker, though Blake is popular on the trade market.  The Rays are one team looking at him.

Give ya Sherrill for Myers.

The Phills inquired on Kemp?? I wonder what they offered for him......

Carlos Carrasco for Kemp????

No way.... kemp is already in the majors and he is one of our best players.....

Carrasco is still in AA and he's a pitcher, that's the last thing we need....

Tim Hudson on that Atlanta team next season would be like Roy Oswalt and what's left of that Astros rotation.

They should make him available and see who bites. As a Yankees fan, I would hope Cashman would kick the tires.

maybe they inquired before the Blanton trade. A possible three way could have been:

A's gets Happ, outman, Spencer, and Cardenas

La gets Blanton, Street, Cunningham, and Patterson

Phillies get Kemp, LaRoache, and either Ebiert or McDonald

Que? Why would we want Myers XD23? That's stupid (no offense, my fellow O's fan). Myers sucks. If the Phils want Sherill...actually the Phillies don't have a farm system. Carrasco IS their farm system now. Screw 'em. The O's should deal Sherrill to the any number of interested teams with DECENT farm systems. Sell his a$$ like a car in the Pennysaver. 2 top prospects...or best offer. Just listen to the offers and send him packing for the best one (unless its completely awful, in which case, I guess you keep him). As long as we get at least one potential impact player, we come out ahead. Remember how we got the guy, for God's sake. We've already netted Adam Jones and Chris Tillman off that one. This is gravy. But important gravy. Mmmmmm...gravy.

-The braves better not get rid of hudson or they would loose the only pitcher in their rotation that is a pretty steady winner.

-Also the indians would be stupid if they traded blake for prospects from the mets farm because the mets traded away all of their decent prospects for johan santana

-I could see the phillies getting kemp but i couldn't see them aquiring nady or holliday

as reported on WEEI, the rox want clay buchholz for brian fuentes. they are going to demand a haul for him

Is there any chance Brandon Wood could be a trade for Sherrill?

Also, any idea who the Cards could offer for Sherrill?

I forgot to mention... This Guthrie business is EXACTLY why I'm growing frustrated with McPhail and his wishy-washy BS. We suck. Period. Everyone over the age of 25 should be available, including- ESPECIALLY- Guthrie. He's an ace in the hole at this point. CC's been dealt. Harden's been dealt. Friggin' Joe Blanton has been dealt. If Guthrie hits the market, the potential is there to create a bidding war. After all, anybody who can pitch as well as he has for the past two years, on a team as bad as the O's, would be a valuable starter for a contender and worth legit stud prospects. I think I said it two months ago, but now, to hear that McPhail is unwilling to even listen to offers for his de facto ace...it's downright moronic. Don't get me wrong; I'd hold out for an offer that included at least one top 50 prospect (I'm not saying he's anywhere near the pitcher CC Sabathia is, but unlike Sabathia, Guthrie is not an impending free agent...in fact, he's under team control until 2013 and isn't even due arbitration for another full season or two!!! In other words, instead of a rental, you're getting a good No. 2/3 with legit front-line stuff- which is why he was a first round pick in the first place- who costs next to nothing by big league standards and is under control for the next four or five years. Get why I would want at least one TOP prospect?), but I'd listen. The Rox want him? How 'bout Jhoulys Chacin, Ian Stewart, and Hector Gomez? Too much? So what! You've got leverage! How 'bout Dexter Fowler and Chacin. 2 for 1. I'd do it in a heartbeat with those two. But then, the O's want a SS. Call up the Brewers and offer Guthrie and Sherrill for Gamel, Escobar, and Jeffress! Ha! They'd probably- OK, certainly- balk, but the point is: putting Guthrie on the market instantly puts the O's into a different class of seller. One with a major chip that could draw a major return. The aforementioned proposals may be unrealistic, but there's one out there that could expedite the Birds' return to prominence. By claiming Guthrie off limits, McPhail is ensuring we don't find it.

"-I could see the phillies getting kemp but i couldn't see them aquiring nady or holliday"

Holliday and Nady are far more available than Kemp is.

How do you think the Al East will be in % years with all this young Talent in it

Guthrie is already what you hope to get when you trade for prospects. Why trade him for an unknown lottery ticket when he's already a proven commodity and signed with us for the next 4 years?

5 years sorry for the typo

Kemp isn't going anywhere, with the lack of production from Jones and Pierre on the DL.

I used to get worked up by the trade rumors for him, then I realized mentioning players from big market teams generate web traffic...Thus the goal of any website.

Justin- at this point, I wonder if Wood alone is worth it. Frankly, I'm no longer a believer. I doubt that the Angels are in the hunt for Sherrill and, as an organization, they've typically been stingy about dealing prospects. Furthermore, they've generally aren't a club that makes deadline deals. Still, playing the what if game, I'd look for local boy Nick Adenhart (who's been awful of late, but still has a lot of promise; actually his performance might be a good thing, if the two teams DID talk trade, since prior to his swoon, he was untouchable) and someone like Hainley Statia for Sherrill. Actually, Adenhart alone would do it and even that might be too rich for the Angels; they seem to be a pretty safe bet in the West. Wood, plus one of the non-Walden pitchers in the low-minors might work too.

No I realize that Wood's stock has fallen a lot. Maybe a chance to play everyday in a low stress environment would help. Just theorizing. Adenhart would be great. I doubt Sherrill would be able to snag him, but who knows. Sherrill could help out this year and lessen the blow after K-rod leaves via free agency.

yankees2727- Realy, really good

Justin- Interesting question- why trade Guthrie when that's what you're looking for in a trade. Here's the answer. Guthrie is 29 years old. By the time the O's are ready to truly compete in an AL East that has the two richest teams in baseball and a club, in the Rays, that looks poised to be a threat for the foreseeable future...to say nothing of the Jays and their rotation, Guthrie will likely be on the downside of his career and, thus, won't be the pitcher he is today. Furthermore, while I do believe he's for real, it does seem like a good sell-high time right now. Should we trade him? Not necessarily. But we should listen? Of course!

The chance exists to pick up multiple parts that can expedite our ascension. Since this is the objective, why wouldn't we consider dealing what is probably our most valuable asset?

Consider the Rockies- the team that asked about him. One of the better farm systems in baseball, the Rockies have a few interesting young arms in Franklin Morales, Greg Reynolds, and, particularly Jhoulys Chacin. They also have a number of intriguing bats in Dexter Fowler, Hector Gomez, Ian Stewart, Brian Rike, and Chris Nelson, among others. Now, if they were willing to part with Chacin, Morales, and Fowler- which they would NOT, mind you- for Guthrie, you HAVE to take that. A more realistic offer of, say, Gomez, Reynolds, and Chacin, would demand at least consideration.

Anyway, that's your answer. If Guthrie were 24 and pitching the same way, I'd hang a sign reading 'Hell NO!' around his neck and be done with it.

You're probably right about Adenhart, but his recent performance at least opens the door to asking. I also like your idea re: Wood. The O's have had considerable success (the ONLY place they've had success) with developing young position players along the same lines. Just bat 'em toward the bottom of the lineup, stick 'em in the field every day and tell 'em to play. Worked with Markakis and it appears to be working with Adam Jones. Low stress, high reps. Might work with Wood...though he has bigger holes in his game than either of our future-star outfielders. Still, for Sherrill it might be an interesting asking price.

@ milehigh78 - I tend to agree with you, though Wood did get that chance when both Figgins and Kendrick were down with injuries and he was terrible. Rodriguez actually looked like the better prospect, because he played superlative defense.

Again AA is reporting about his cross town team and is yet again wrong... The Dodgers and specifically Torre are fed up with Kemp's lack of hustle, poor work ethic, bad attitude, and consider him the future Terrell Owens of baseball players... Kemp is VERY available, but they want value in return... Probably if they want that 3B spot filled, the best alternative and one that would make fans happy is a return of Beltre... Starting bid for Beltre would be Kemp, Santana, McDonald, but Seattle might have to give them Betancourt too... If we got back DeWitt or LaRoche as a 3rd player than I'd be all forthat deal... The fact is that Beltre a Type A free agent after next season, will be worth two prospects if offered arbitration, which he will be since Boras is his agent. Betancourt is signed through 2012. That means that the Dodgers would either get two starters to fill their biggest two holes in the lineup for the next half decade, or theyfill those two holes for the next year plus and then they get two draft picks and still have their SS of the future for another 3 years... Pretty clear-cut... If Beltre goes anywhere it'll be to LA and Kmp's attitude would go unnoticed in Seattle, just like Jose Guillen's attitude, which was actually a positive for the team in hindsight! LA however wants only professional players, which means Kemp will be gone before he reaches arbitration, probably at the deadline or before next Spring.

That was supposed to say a player who can play 3rd.

Lmao @ baseballguru.

Yeah, thats right, we just really want that horrible clubhouse cancer matt kemp gone from our team. You know, because he is the 3rd best hitter on the team, with the potential for the most power (is actually tied for the team lead with 11 i believe).

Get a clue. This guy is a stud, and has been on fire lately, there is no way he is gone in the next week, or the next year for that matter.

Also, if anyone in management (or should I say anyone that has a say) were smart enough to start having Laroche play instead of the very Andruw Jones like Blake Dewitt, there would be no need to trade for a power hitting 3b.

The Dodgers should not make any moves before the break, unless it involved maybe a small move for maddux, and nothing more (unless someone wanted to take Jones off our hands...a guy can wish right?).

That especially goes for a closer. Why the hell would we need a closer when we have Broxton, and he could basically be our closer next year if Saito cannot be.

Getting a closer now would cost us a few prospects, then I could see the Dodgers making a stupid move and using broxton and maybe ethier or kemp to trade for the big bat that everyone wants, but no we cant and shouldnt go for one.

It would be stupid of the dodgers to do so.
