Stark's Latest: Dunn, Tankersley, Sherrill

ESPN has a new Trade Deadline blog going; here's the link.  Jayson Stark already has two entries up, found here and here.  Let's dig in!

  • The Yankees have explored the idea of acquiring Adam Dunn, though they're reluctant to meet the Reds' demands.
  • The Marlins are proposing the idea of swapping lefty Taylor Tankersley for a more experienced one like Brian Fuentes or George Sherrill.  So far, nothing's cooking.  Tankersley, 25, was demoted to Triple A earlier this month after being bitten by the home run bug.  He dealt with shoulder tendinitis in early '07.
  • The Rockies instead have their eye on Florida's Ryan Tucker, a young Double A righty with a mid-90s heater and a 1.41 ERA.  I don't see that happening.  Stark says they want to push the bidding closer to the deadline though.
  • The Orioles are apparently trying to pry Alcides Escobar or Mat Gamel from the Brewers for Sherrill, but as you know they're not biting.

Re: Sherrill/Brewers

Hardly surprising, but a good thought. If the O's could pick up one of those two, it'd be a steal.

I would love to have Dunn on the Yankees.

I seriously doubt the Brewers would even consider moving Gamel or Escobar at this point. Especially for a reliever like Sherill

The Reds are probably looking for one of Kennedy/Jackson/Montero/Betances(probably in that order as they are looking for almost immediate return) plus one of Gardner/Kontos/Whelan

yes no way the brewers are giving up such big prospects. i think the brewers would have been open to trading hardy a while back but not now. they will most likely leave their shortstop situation alone until the offseason. the cardinals r getting sherrill anyways. forget the brewers.

there is no way the yankees will give up anything good for dunn. dunn is basically the same player giambi is. there is no reason to trade one overpaid player for another. Maybe they will pick him up as a free agent... but thats a different story.

Dunn to the yankees... hmm lets see, sure Dunn would hit a ton of home runs with the short porch, and although he hits .230 his on base percentage is 380+, not too bad. A good fit in New York.
But, how many lefty bats do we need in the lineup, we need a righty, or at least a switch hitter with power. sure Giambi is gone after this year, but when we face a lefty, we suck!

I am happy to see the yankees stay stedfast and not give up too much young talent.

Id rather see the yankees look for a power right handed bat or a #3 for the rotation. Dont want washburn, would be ok with Dunn, but still leaves a hole for a right handed bat.

Please not Adam Dunn...I don't dislike the player but would prefer an outfielder that bats right handed and can defend and/or has some speed. Gardner isn't producing but i love his speed in the lineup.

I agree with JohnnyC - NO NO NO to DUNN

We don't need another lefty...we don't need another guy who can't play the field...we don't need another stiff who is "station-to-station" on the bases...and we don't need a dude who strikes out 180 times per year (and that's vs NL pitching!!)

The orioles are idiots, but I dont even really want Sherill, i want the brewers to pick up Fuentes. Thats either 2 more draft picks next year or a solid reliever.

I hope the Yankees get some pitching help by getting washburn. They haven't decided on their pitcher for the series final in boston, so that would work out there. If they do aquire Dunn that'd be great too.

Anybody see this one today on MLB.com?

Why are the Orioles idiots, glover? Because they're asking on a couple of the Brewers' top prospects? Yeah, that's stupid. What if the Rangers hadn't asked for Beltre, Murphy, and Gabbard (and, from what I've read, it could've been Masterson or Bowden, but Texas preferred Gabbard) for Gagne last year? What if San Diego hadn't asked for Garrison and Inman for Linebrink? Or, if you prefer, what if the Astros hadn't asked for Jeff Bagwell for Andersen back in the day? THAT would've been idiotic!

Dunn in pinstripes? Don't we already have enough 1B/DH?

The Yankees dont need another hitter like Giambi. They need someone who hits for a good avg and gets on base.

I don know, mabey somebody that rhymes with Gary Ponds.

the orioles certainly arent idiots but they certainly arent getting either of those guys from milwaukee either. the tejada and bedard deals were very good but sherrill is not tejada or bedard so the os need to keep this in mind. there is no top tier prospect coming back for sherrill. a package of decent guys is much more likely.

I agree. I'm sick of people being offended or calling people idiots for merely discussing a trade.

if there is a player brought up, you can always say NO. It is not that hard. These things are a negotiation, there are steps involved.

The first offer should always be rich. If it isn't, you are not doing your job correctly.

First, the Orioles would be idiots if they *weren't* asking for too much. If you enter negotiations asking for what you will settle for, you're a crappy negotiator.

Second, Adam Dunn reminds me of Ken Phelps, one of my favorite players back in the day, except that Dunn actually does know how to use a glove even if he doesn't do it well. I know the O's are in rebuild mode and Dunn is older than they would like, but I'd LOVE to see him in Camden Yards as our full time DH next year... or this year, but that's not happening. Angelos should unload the truck for Dunn and Tex, jettison Millar, move Huff to 3B where he'd be above average offensively, and the O's could have a lineup of

2B Roberts
CF Jones
RF Markakis
1B Texiera
3B Huff
DH Dunn
LF Scott
C Wieters
SS Scrub

I know people will tear this apart, but I don't care. It's a fan's prerogative to dream.
