Molony's Latest: Mahay, Loretta, Erstad, Guzman

Let's check in with MLB.com's Jim Molony.

  • The Rays are scouting lefty relievers Brian Fuentes and Ron Mahay.  The issue?  The price for Fuentes seems exorbitant, and Mahay may not be available.  Troy E. Renck names the Yankees, Mets, Cardinals, and Marlins as the main suitors for Fuentes aside from the Rays.
  • A few contenders have inquired with the Astros as to the availability of Mark Loretta and Darin Erstad.
  • As you might imagine, the Rangers are open to trading Frank CatalanottoWe mentioned yesterday that his contract is a bit of a burden.
  • It seems that Jim Bowden is listening to offers for Cristian Guzman while also trying to sign him to an extension.  From Guzman's point of view, it might make sense to enter a weak shortstop market this winter.
  • The Matt Capps injury apparently affects Damaso Marte's availability.
  • The Marlins may make Mark Hendrickson available.  The big lefty was replaced in the rotation by top prospect Chris Volstad.

I think Loretta or Erstad would work well with the Dodgers. Erstad could provide a lefty bat off the bench and solid defensive presence at 4 positions while Loretta could also provide a solid bench bat with the ability to play all over the place and could end the Angel Berroa experiment, as Maza has played much better and earned the right to stick.

Tim I keep hearing about how every team and their mother is looking for a lefty reliever but that top shelf guys like Marte, Fuentes and Mahay would require giving up too much... What about WILL OHMAN? Why has this guy not been brought up at all yet? He's got a 2.89ERA, 1.18WHIP, and 33k's in 37 innings... What could the Braves get for him if they traded him to say, Tampa Bay?

Don, I keep saying the same thing about Tim Brydak. 1.71ERA and lefties are hitting .174 against him. Sounds like a pretty desirable commodity to me, and he'll certainly come cheaper than Fuentes.
