D'Backs Not Interested In Bonds

WEDNESDAY, 7:43pm: Magruder talked to Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris.  Borris says the D'Backs have never had interest in Bonds, based on conversations with the team.  However, Bonds would love to play for them.  Borris says he could be ready to go in a week to ten days.

WEDNESDAY, 9:17am: Jack Magruder takes this rumor a step further, saying the D'Backs have had internal discussions about Bonds.

TUESDAY: It seems that D'Backs outfielder Eric Byrnes is out for the season.  The team could certainly continue to get by with Conor Jackson in left field and Chad Tracy at first.  Or, they could just pick up a lefty-masher on the cheap to complement Tracy.

GM Josh Byrnes admits he's looking at outside options, and seems to crave more than a platoon bat to give the offense a jolt.  When asked about Barry Bonds, Byrnes responded:

He and maybe a couple of others are sort of sitting out there.  I think it’s a bit of assessing any players’ readiness, then knocking somebody out of the lineup, dollars, etc. I don’t want to talk about him specifically, but, believe me, we’ve considered a lot of options. There is sort of no one obvious option right now, but there are a lot of considerations.

Maybe we're reaching, but this is the closest we've seen to consideration of Bonds in a long time.  Piecoro believes Bonds has been discussed.  Piecoro tosses out Kenny Lofton as another option.  The D'Backs could also consider some of the same corner outfielders I named for the Mets - Adam Dunn, for example.  Will Carroll on the Dunn-to-AZ idea:  Dunn would be a great fit in Arizona, but no one seems to think that’s going to happen.

Cubs just traded for Harden and Gaudin...you guys are slacking.

seems to make some sense. west coast team, could use the boost. the question really is if Bonds is in shape or not, and if AZ wants to put a personality like Bonds into the mix. seems lately young teams play well because they seem to "gel" - time to weigh OBP vs. chemistry. might make it a tough call, not to mention how much Bonds would ask for

And they posted on it three hours before this post. Do you want them to ignore everything else?

The DBacks are the last team I'd thought would kick the tires on Bonds. The ownership has been very public about their feelings on steriods since the Grimsley debacle and Bonds was the poster child for PED's until just recently.

On paper it makes sense but I don't see it going any further.

"...you guys are slacking."

Oh my god! It's been 3 hours, and more news has come out!

If you read more than the top post -- you would save everyone from your silly comments.

Seriously, click back and scroll down. Done.

As a baseball fan who sees the hypocrisy of making one player a scapegoat for a widespread problem, I am angry that spineless GMs and owners are depriving me of my last chance to watch the greatest hitter of our time. If "chemistry" were a paramount concern, Milton Bradley would be DFA'ed immediately. Kevin Youkilis would be traded for a few maple bats. Dare I mention A-Rod? If being standoffish with the media is a distraction, then how do we feel about grabbing headlines on the backpage of the Post with affairs and thoughtless comments?

Give the man his corner of the clubhouse and his leather recliner and let him put up his .900+ OPS for the league minimum. An AL team would be ideal, but at this point I just want to watch the big jerk swing the bat -- something he will do better at age 44 than, say, a 31-year-old Craig Monroe, just to pick a very poor DH at random. Monroe can kiss babies, help old women cross the street, save kittens from trees and lead the entire clubhouse in a rousing rendition of Kumbaya, but with his .282 OBP, I can't help but remind myself that baseball players are not auditioning to be Eagle Scouts. I'll take the tax-evading, extramarital-affair-having, steroid-using guy who actually produces runs. Scoring goes a long way in building up goodwill.

End rant.

i don't think the "chemistry" argument is about who is virtuous, it's about keeping the energy balance in the clubhouse. certain teams can do without it, other teams need it.

I mentioned young teams seem to thrive on chemistry. the D-backs made it to the NLCS with alot of young players last year, the Rockies went on a historical tear all the way to the world series. to a certain extent, that can be attributed to everyone playing better because of a positive work environment - alot of similar thinking players working toward the same goal.
granted, neither of those teams are on top of the world now, so maybe it is all an illusion.

even if they we aren't talking about the best players in the world, I still think chemistry can really boost performance. it's just one of those intangibles - anyone will work better in a positive work environment. i think the fear is Bonds might create some taboo issues in the clubhouse that could tear down the positive vibes.

Well said..... Bonds still sucks though....

Well said..... Bonds still sucks though....

I do still miss booing the fat- headed, steriod, obese, jerk when the giant come to L.A.

Even though Omar Minaya has said he's not interested, I can see the Mets bringing Bonds to Shea now that Ryan Church is likely done for the foreseeable future. Remember, Omar is the same man who looked Willie Randolph in the eyes and told him that he wouldn't be fired.

That said, I would hate to see Bonds back in the game. He's a disgrace and he belongs with the Rocket locked outside of all ballparks.

The rumors here in NY are that Melkey Cabrera is definitely on the block in order to make room for Brett Gardner in CF, once Damon and/or Matsui come off the DL to play LF. Since Ariz like affordable players they can control for a couple of seasons, the Melk Man might make sense. The question is, what SP could the D-Backs offer the Yanks? Please don't say Doug Davis.

Barry Bonds do make sense.
The Diamondbacks might actually benefit from it.

As for Melky Cabrera, luissojo, Ken Rosenthal did mention him as possible Diamondbacks left fielder along with David DeJesus. Webb, Haren, Davis, Scherzer, and Parker are untouchables I've heard as I live in Arizona.

Micah Owings, however, is tradeable.

Angels should have grabbed Bonds before interleauge. It would have elevated the Angels Dodgers hate to a new level, and the guy can still hit. Finally Im pretty sure Socissa would make it clear that Bonds shennanigans would not be tolerated.

ill trade you dunn and griffey for 25 ash bats , 2 buckets of ball , 10 bags of sunflower seeds , and piece of catching equipment to be named later

Bonds makes sense for several teams. I doubt he sees another major league pitch, because that would just make too much sense.

"ill trade you dunn and griffey for 25 ash bats , 2 buckets of ball , 10 bags of sunflower seeds , and piece of catching equipment to be named later"

seriously? i am not the biggest dunn fan, but i think that he has shown his value this year. sure, he has a .230 BA...but also one of the best OBP. 20+ homers, and his glove has been better than in the past, it helps when he has patterson or bruce in center with good range...but he is certainly worth some respect...and how can you send a cheap shot on the most respected player of our time...especially as a reds fan?

Wake up Colt, I love Griffey as much as the next guy but he hasn't exactly done much to deserve praise while in Cincinnati. Not to mention Reds fans have to deal with Baker batting him and his .238 average third every day.

stlredbirds,

Your observations on chemistry make a lot of sense, particularly when you cite last year's Rockies. The same could be said of the 2004 Red Sox.

My gripe is that teams make allowances for players who threaten chemistry all the time in the interest of putting a winning product on the field, and I don't think there's any rational justification for singling out Bonds in particular. If a GM can legitimately weigh Bonds' likely production at a reasonable salary against any deleterious effects he might have on the clubhouse, then I will back off my comments. But in the case of teams like Detroit or Minnesota, which are unlikely to sustain themselves for the long haul on chemistry-power alone, the benefits seem to outweigh the risks.

"Remember, Omar is the same man who looked Willie Randolph in the eyes and told him that he wouldn't be fired."

Did Willie Randolph tell you this? You don't think Willie should have been fired? Omar was about the only man in the entire Met organization that even wanted Willie and fought for him. I sometimes wonder what it would be like to go through life as a completely uninformed moron. I am sure somebody from this website can tell me. There is a nice number of canidates.

"Micah Owings, however, is tradeable."

For Melky Cabrera? Rofl. Why would the D'Backs trade anybody with even the smallest amount of positive value so they can get Melky (I have negative value when I play CF) Cabrera to play left field. You are a D'Back fan and would consider trading Owings for Melky Cabrera? Hell, you would get more value out of Owings if you just stuck him in LF instead of Melky! In most cases, this would be a joke, but it is not. I would seriously think Owings could post a higher OPS in LF then Melky will.

Bravo.

every GM in baseball besides jim hendry should be fired. theyre job is to make their team the best it can be and barry bonds is the best player ever regardless of wat era he's from. babe ruth is overrated and no one could study his swing for hours on end just to find a weakness. there is no weakness in his hitting and im sure hes a better fielder than ryan braun.

D'Backs not interested in Bonds=D'Backs not interested in winning. Sorry AZ fans, but look at the bright side. At least they've already won a world series...seven years ago.

The guy offered to play for the league minimum and donate his salary.
If I were Omar minaya I would sign him plus you could platoon him and Alou to keep them both fresh and so Alou dosen't get hurt in 2 atbats when he gets back.
You are not going to find anyone who will play for the league minimum who will put up a 400 OBP and a legit power threat.
Every team in baseball could use him.

This isn't about whether he can still hit or whether he would cause a media distraction. It's about Bud Selig not wanting him back. You can put your money on that. I'm with you, I think the Mets would be a great fit. Arizona, an even better fit.

"The ownership has been very public about their feelings on steriods since the Grimsley debacle."

Really? Can you please tell me why the haven't released Eric Byrnes yet if this is the case.

redsfan, I think you are being too greedy trying to get the 10 bags of seeds, you'd be lucky to get 5.

Wait a second, the D-Backs aren't interesting in winning b/c they won't sign a pariah on the game of baseball who hasn't played competitive ball in about 9 months and would draw a ridiculous amount of negative attention to the franchise? As I said last night, the only team that can afford to take that gamble is the Mets b/c the NY media is a circus anyway and they could always eat Bonds' contract if it doesn't work out.

All that said, if the D-Backs don't acquire another bat by the deadline, then yes, they're only interesting in being competitive to put some asses in the seats (like the Twins).

As for the poster who questioned the poorly handled Randolph firing, you obviously aren't from the Tri-State area. That saga was covered in painful detail NONSTOP for over two weeks in the papers, on the radio and on local television. You would have thought Willie was assassinated.

It was time for Willie to lose his job, but Omar & Company acted like scumbags.

That's right luissojo, they're not interested in winning because of that reason. We're talking about a team that went from one of the top offensive teams in the majors to...let's see...the 19th worse offensive team in the majors. I say Barry still has a shot in AZ. Justin Upton was scratched from tonight's lineup with a ribcage problem (which can take a very long time to heal). If that's the case, the D'Backs will be shorthanded in the outfield and I'm sure Barry will make them an offer they can't refuse...THE LEAGUE MINIMUM!!!

"The ownership has been very public about their feelings on steriods since the Grimsley debacle."

"Really? Can you please tell me why the haven't released Eric Byrnes yet if this is the case."

Are you implying Eric Byrnes did steriods? If he has or has been implied to this is the first I've heard of it. Hell after the way he's played this year I almost wish he had.
