Jon Heyman is cranking out a lot of rumorage. Here's his latest.
- The price has dropped a tad on Xavier Nady, as the Pirates have become more interested in moving him.
- The Braves still might trade Mark Teixeira right before the deadline, and Heyman thinks they can easily beat two draft choices.
- Many teams scouted George Sherrill recently: the Marlins, Dodgers, Cardinals, Phillies, and Brewers.
- Some execs "expressed annoyance" at the D'Backs underpaying for Jon Rauch.
- Heyman says the Yankees are looking for catching, though Peter Abraham doesn't agree.
- The Twins, Giants, and Dodgers have interest in Hank Blalock, who has a $6.2MM option for '09.
Some execs means Dan O'Dowd right?

The execs are probably annoyed that Rauch wasn't openly "on the market," at least as far as one can tell from trade rumors in the preceding weeks. It's supply-and-demand - the more good relievers on the market to meet the demand, the lower the price is likely to be. But like all markets, that depends on all the information being available to everyone, or the price of the goods in question won't reflect the real supply and demand.

I wouldn't be remotely shocked if the Rangers moved Blalock. Elvis Andrus should be ready by the end of next season, at which point Michael Young can move over to third so Andrus can take over.
I'm honestly starting to get scared of these damn Rangers..
C- Taylor Teagarden
1B- Chris Davis
2B- Ian Kinsler
3B- Michael Young
SS- Elvis Andrus
LF- David Murphy
CF- Josh Hamilton
RF- Engel Beltre
DH- Max Ramirez/Salty

Tim - or any Rangers' fans in here...
Ian Kennedy for Salty?
Posted by: maximumpotential | July 23, 2008 at 04:11 PM
"Ian Kennedy for Salty?"
Hmm an interesting swap. A couple of fallen prospects being swapped to fit team needs would make sense. But I'm not sure this deal does.
I feel like Kennedy doesnt have quite the ceiling to have the same value of a Saltalamacchia.
I recall talking about a Salty for Homer Bailey swap earlier in the year, and I still feel like that deal would be more logical. Similar concept, but IMO slightly more logical.

Expecting Andrus to take over by the end of 2009 is optimistic, especially when he's not yet 20 years old and putting up a .685 OPS line in the Texas League. He needs more time.

Maybe Kennady for Ramirez would that be better.

"Expecting Andrus to take over by the end of 2009 is optimistic, especially when he's not yet 20 years old and putting up a .685 OPS line in the Texas League. He needs more time"
Yeah its a little optimistic, but really all he has to do is show improved power, which is something that generally comes with age. He's batting .286 with a .344 OBP, so he's obviously making contact and has shown some good plate discipline. But he has only 14 extra base hits, so really it seems like power is the main thing missing. That, and getting better at defense.
The end of '09 might be a little optimistic, but its far from outrageous.

And honestly, at this point I almost prefer Max Ramirez over Salty. From what I've heard he seems more likely to stick behind the plate.
I'm not saying that a Kennedy/Salty swap was a bad idea, I'm just saying I'm not so sure Kennedy for Ramirez is much better.
But I definately get the feeling that one of Ramirez and Salty will be moved for young pitching, because Teagarden is the best defensive catcher they have and will be MLB ready next year. He should be playing behind the plate, with the guy that doesnt get traded playing DH.

I saw the Rangers play at Camden Yards a while ago and they have a fun line-up to watch. But if you look at the top four hitters Kinsler, Young, Hamilton, and Bradeley they carry the team. The other averages are well.... average. But scribbletone is right with a line-up like that on the feild they will contend for the world series in no time. They have one of the best systems in baseball position player-wise and pitching-wise. ANd ever without the pitching that line-up projects to be a league leader in runs. The only question mark is will they re-sign Bradely or will he go for big money. Everyone else is locked up. Hamlton sounds like he wants to stay and they hold his rights for 4 more years.

I would much rather trade Salty over Ramirez/Teagarden. If we lose Milton this offseason (though I think we'll end up overpaying for him), Max can DH and play 1st when Davis needs time off. Salty still has a high ceiling, and I think the Rangers can get a good return for him. I would gladly take Homer Bailey or Ian Kennedy over Salty.
I also wouldn't mind maybe hanging on to both Salty/Blalock if there would be a good trade out there over the winter. I personally would love the Rangers to maybe go after the likes of Josh Johnson from Florida in the offseason, if he can be bought for a good price (and they are in need of a catcher as it is).
Random thoughts, but do ya'll think their is any chance to pry Liriano away from Minnesota? I'd throw them Blalock, Cruz, and Arias if we could land Francisco + Class A infielder.
Lastly, does anyone think Laird will be the one to go? If so, when and where?

No.
"I'd throw them Blalock, Cruz, and Arias if we could land Francisco + Class A infielder."
Defffffinately not enough.
How about Neftali Feliz and Julio Borbon for him?
Posted by: scribbletone | July 23, 2008 at 04:59 PM
Hmmm. I've heard Feliz has been incredible in the minors, and I think Borbon will be good too. However, I don't know where he would hit in the lineup. Is he more a power guy with speed or a speed guy with some power?
What do you think would be a plausible trade for Nelson Cruz? I'm sure teams have interest, and his minor league numbers are incredible. I just can't imagine what the Rangers we'll be able to come up with as a equal trade.

T"he end of '09 might be a little optimistic, but its far from outrageous."
First, I think OPS is a terrible way of evaluating the value of Andrus because the S will always be low with him. That said, he is a speedster who has made contact and taken a walk this year. That said, he Ks WAY too much for his style and that must be rectified before he comes up.

I feel like by the time that the rosters are expanded next season, Andrus should be ready to take over. His main issues are things that really can be fixed because he's so young for his levels. I think Andrus is gonna end up being a pretty special player, picture Edgar Renteria in his prime..
