« Blanton Reactions | Main | Heyman's Latest: Yankees, Manny, Bowden, Pudge »
Blue Jays pitcher A.J. Burnett doesn't expect or desire a trade:
"I'm a Blue Jay and I plan on being here for the rest of the season. Just because my name's out there and all this stuff, and I made one mistake talking to a Chicago writer...I enjoy being a Blue Jay and that's where I'm at. That's where I plan on being."
The Phillies didn't seem terribly interested in Burnett anyway, but that's one less suitor after their Joe Blanton acquisition. Burnett is healthy, and despite his 4.96 ERA he's the best available starter right now. The Blue Jays apparently won't shop him around because they don't want to lower his value. Plus, J.P. Ricciardi said the Jays have no trades cooking for Burnett or anyone else.
That doesn't mean we can't speculate. Three teams that I feel could be in the market for a starter: the Mets, Cardinals, and White Sox. The Mets' Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez are both hurting; will they answer the other National League starter acquisitions?

The Jays have 10 games coming up vs. TB BAL SEA, so he was never going to get moved before that stretch. The Jays are only 1 game under .500 and 3 back of the Yankees (the team I consider favorites for the WC), so management is still holding out hope the team can have a strong second half and prove it can contend. Speculation on Burnett until July 30 is useless, he isn't going anywhere.

I'm starting to think Burnett will stay a jay. On top of that I'm wondering if he does stay with 2 very good young pitchers not far from the majors I wonder if in the Offseason JP might try a McGowan for some Young stud hitter type deal. Ala Reds and Rangers.
Cecil is a Middle to top of the Order pitcher and Purcey is a Middle of the rotation kinda guy I see him as a #4 type.

The Mets will definitely not go after Burnett... They have a sold #1-5, and if Pedro doesn't stay healthy, they have Vargas, Armas, Figueroa, and Niese in the minors...
Getting a corner OF is a bigger concern....

People are overlooking the Rangers. Best hitting and worst pitching in baseball, within reach of a playoff spot, and a good farm system. Easy matchup there.
ALso, with the young Jays injuries, I wouldn't be opposed if somehow AJ stayed beyond this year. Maybe tack on some extra years?

As pointed out on Drunk Jays Fan, Burnett might be a dick, but he's our dick. And we love him for that.
Posted by: jstuart | July 18, 2008 at 09:54 AM
Rangers should do Hamilton for Volquez :/
I said earlier, AJ's value is not that great right now, though team's could be getting desperate. If he starts to pitch real well to increase his value, there's a good chance the Jays will be playing very well and could possibly contend. Thus, JP not moving him, and AJ making himself a TypeA.

"im a blue jay and i plan on being one the rest of the season"
wow what strong words and loyalty. what that translates to me as is he doesnt want to be traded, play there for 2 months, and then become a free agent. he would prefer to just play out his 2 months for toronto before opting out. after reading this comment by him i dont want him in a cardinals uniform anymore. when people say they want to be a cardinal they say for life, not until the end of the season. if im a jays fan i would be very insulted by this. im surprised none of u r.

Burnett is 100 stuff with 0 brain... so basically we don't care of him although whatever he says..
He will be traded anyway because he has a real chance not to be A freeagent after optting out at the end of this season..
Posted by: stevo | July 18, 2008 at 10:56 AM
What do you expect him to say? "I would love to be traded to a contender at the deadline."
Posted by: juiced | July 18, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Joelcards, insulted by what? His recognition of the fact he has an opt-out clause in his contract and is going to use it? Should he have said - "I'm a Blue Jay for life", when he isn't going to be? It irks me when people take athlete's quotes and start tacking on layers of insinuation never intended by their speaker.

The Mets need a bat. They've had 4 shutouts during this 10 game winning streak!! I know Pedro and El Duque spend more time on the DL than the field.. but if you need a starter sign Freddy Garcia and focus on getting a right handed outfield bat (Like Juan Rivera, Xavier Nady or Casey Blake)

That's good that Burnett wants to stay a Jay. I think we should keep him because if he can locate his stuff he will be a monster. I always had this thought of when we trade Burnett he suddenly locates his stuff and becomes a Nolan-Ryan type pitcher. Sorta like the Babe going from the Red Sox to the Yankees. The only downside is the money we're paying him is too much for a pitcher who has a history of injuries and inconsistency.

I like the Rangers idea, good call.

Burnett is going to be a type A? Since when was posting a 5 ERA considered the upper tier of pitchers? By the end of this year he will have been paid $25m over 3 years. For that you get 30 wins and a LA ERA.
As for his "feelings" about wanting to stay a Blue Jay - I say tough crap. He won't show the Blue Jays one ounce of loyalty this off-season. Conversely, the Jays should show none to him. Send that guy packing to the highest bidder and don't lose sleep over watching a guy with a lot of "stuff" walk out the door.

Wow apparently the Red Sox ownership wanted Burnett over Beckett. Wow we dodged that bullet, what a terrible world without Josh Beckett. So glad we made that trade....damn Hanley had to be sooo good.
Burnett as everyone knows has top of the rotation stuff, but he is an injury risk, and a DUMB pitcher. The problem is that smart pitchers can do just as well without half his STUFF.

Right now I want AJ to Opt out at season end if he's a type A or stay with the team. If he's a Type A I doubt any team will match the prospects we'll get with 2 higher picks.
Posted by: Dev0 | July 18, 2008 at 12:25 PM
exactly bj thats what im saying. he is showing no loyalty so who cares if he wants to stay. 92 93, we r talking about 2 different things. u r saying u like it when players r honest. i say thats great but if hes basically sayng hes gone(and thats what he was saying in underlining terms) then why should the jays care what he wants or thinks. burnett just doesnt want to have to change teams before he changes teams again. my point is screw him. the jays should do what they think they need to do and disregard his well being.
Posted by: Joelcards | July 18, 2008 at 12:36 PM
you said we should be insulted by what he said though, and that's what i was responding to.
obviously the team doesn't give a rats ass about AJ's feelings, JP will trade him if the right deal comes along on July 31. but he isn't shopping him.
the bottom line is that burnett is an awesome pitcher, a great #2 to have behind a bona fide ace like Doc, and Jays fans are REALLY gonna miss him next year.

I don't think the Mets need Burnett. Santana, Pelfrey, and Maine are all sporting ERA's under 4 right now and Oliver Perez is pitching some great baseball since Dan Warthen altered his mechanics. Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez are at best the Mets 5th and 6th best starters right now. Plus, they have some mildly appealing options in Claudio Vargas, Jon Niese, and Bobby Parnell if they were to miss extended time with an injury. You would think the Mets could get #5 production out of one of the above.
Not saying I'd be opposed to Burnett, but only if it's for a mid-level prospect and taking on his salary. What the Mets need is another Outfielder because you can't rely on the Fernando Tatis's of the world continuing this down the stretch.

92 93 if a cardinal were in the same situation and he made that exact comment i would be pissed. we like cardinals who like being cardinals. this guy doesnt like being a blue jay. riccardi may be a goofus but he did say one thing before i liked to here. he said he wants guys who want to be jays. how about erik bedard? he has said he wants to be a blue jay. when guys arent happy it creates results like the jays current season.
Posted by: Joelcards | July 18, 2008 at 02:06 PM
not hitting with RISP creates results like the jays current season, not some BS chemistry feeling the city of st. louis has about its holy cardinals.
