After using one for a couple of weeks, I got to the bottom of things. Check out our full review after the jump.

The large 11.6″ screen is a big plus for the AO751 with a large 1366×768 pixel resolution only the Sony Vaio P can beat. Despite the size, it did not sacrifice the weight and dimensions to separate itself from the regular 12-incher notebooks — still under 1 inch thin and weighs just about 2.75lbs (pretty thin and lightweight for its size actually). Biggest advantage here is the almost 100% full chiclet-style keyboard.

What’s in the box? You get an Intel Atom Z520 @ 1.33GHz, 2GB DDR2 RAM, 250GB HDD, Intel GMA 500, Bluetooth, WiFi 802.11b/g. Pretty nice specs IMO. The only biggest concern here is the seemingly underpowered CPU. While 1.33GHz isn’t really that slow, you will still feel that the pre-installed Windows Vista OS is dragging it.

Here’s what the Windows Performance Index looked like:

Obviously, the CPU has the lowest subscore (1.9) among all other components of the netbook. SuperPi 2M took about 4m 56s. As a point of reference, an N270 1.66GHz takes 3m 45s on SuperPi 2M and has a subscore of 2.2 on Windows Performance Index. It would have been nice if a 1.6GHz Z530 was in here or maybe even a 1.66GHz N280 but the latter would have needed an exhaust fan.

As for the GPU, Acer used an Intel GMA500 which turns out to be better than the GMA945 for Windows Aero (2.9 vs. 2.0). The screen is glossy which makes the display bright and crisp (similar to the AOD150). What I found somewhat buggy is that the screen turns black when launching apps (outside the app window) and doesn’t refresh back to normal display immediately.

Battery life is impressive, just like its earlier siblings (6-cell 5200mAh), and ranges between 5.5 to 6.5 hours depending on the brightness level of the screen. I haven’t been able to squeeze it anywhere near the promised 8 hours but the 6.5 hours on regular use (with WiFi) is already a good number.

I’m still a bit disappointed that the 3G SIM card slot isn’t there (the label says it’s WAN-ready only so I don’t know what it means). That would have made the retail price of Php27,500 a great bargain.

Just a fair warning — since the Acer Aspire One AO751 runs Windows Vista Home out of the box, you will most definitely experience a laggy performance. I somewhat avoided that by upgrading to Windows 7 RC (Windows XP should also do the trick). What this model gives you that no other 10-inch netbooks out there cannot give is the larger screen and higher resolution (1366×768pixels). That and the full-sized keyboard.

I’ve been hearing about several negotiations for months now but held off writing about it until the transaction has been confirmed and completed. Details of the acquisition is yet unknown at the moment and it looks like the foreign owners/investors still want to keep it a secret.

Sulit is one of the most visited websites in the Philippines with an estimated 46.3 million pageviews and 7.3 million visitors a month and over 12 million indexed pages in Google with about 350,000 registered members.

This super-SEO’d classifieds ad site only launched in 2006 and surpassed global giant eBay.ph by October 2007 in terms of traffic.

Google Trends puts Sulit’s daily unique visitors at ~80,000 while Alexa ranks Sulit at #16 in the Philippines (and the only home-grown site in the top 20).

Nix Nolledo (of PEx, Havoc Digital, Starfish Mobile and Xurpass) confirms the purchase on his Twitter account:

Note: Sulit.com.ph is owned and operated by Netrepreneur Connections Enterprise, Inc. Will update this post once I get official word from the founders of Sulit.

Update: RJ of Sulit confirms the acquisition in this forum message:

Late last night, a topic was posted by one of our dear Sulitizens asking if Sulit.com.ph was indeed Sold. Eventually, the news came from a prominent Filipino blogger who got his confirmation from a Twitter account of a Filipino serial tech entrepreneur.

So what is the real deal behind this news?

It is no secret that Sulit.com.ph has a tremendous growth for the past 2 years and most of you know that Arianne (bigbucks) and I (being the founders) are doing our best to give a top notch service that we can offer our members and visitors. But eventually, there will be a limit on what we can physically provide and we believe that our users deserve more.

Therefore, our strong growth has led us to look for outside advice that will help us maximize our performance in critical business areas. We are also considering the strategic options that would allow us (the founders) to take the business to the next level and to maximize the benefits that our users, especially our members, receive. As entrepreneurs, we believe that we have to identify the areas that we are good at and we have to look for people and entities that have the skills and resources to complement ours.

In line with these developments, we will make further announcements if and when we believe it is appropriate to do so. But one thing for sure, we will still be the captains that will lead Sulit.com.ph, together with our users, to new heights for the foreseeable future. We have a lot of exciting plans for Sulit.com.ph and we will see to it that we are there when these plans are implemented. In short, we are here for the long haul.

Unlike the previous one, the Photonic Disruptor is a water-proof high-powered green laser that’s designed for a more rugged and harsh environment. As such, the body (including the on/off button) is fully covered with a rubber-like skin.

The Specs:
Wavelength: 532nm
Output Power: 100mW
Beam Diameter: ~1.5mm
Power Consumption: 600mA

The laser focus can be adjusted from 1.5mm to 7.5mm radius with the wider unfocused beam less intense and has shorter range. If you’ve watched Future Weapons on Discovery Channel, this laser has been featured/used in one of their episodes (see video here).

The Photonic Disruptor uses 2 AAA batteries that only lasts just over an hour and retails for $599.99 (designed for military and law enforcement use only).

You can grab the full installer on the site or if you have an old version of Firefox, just go to Help -> Check for Updates.

I chose the update from an older version 3.0.11 and got this error when launching Firefox.

Not really sure what that meant but it’s possible it has got to do with the fact that I’m running Windows 7 RC.

Update: So, I uninstalled the old version and re-installed v3.5 and it went all fine.

I especially liked this superslim multimedia keyboard (PKB-780B) with the keys a little bit recessed (similar to the ones in laptops) so touch typing is easier. Aside from the multimedia keys on the top portion, it’s nothing too special about the construction and layout (they’re pretty standard IMO).

The other one is this variable sensitivity laser mouse. There’s a button just above the scroll wheel that allows you to change the mouse sensitivity from 400 to 1600 dpi.

No idea yet on the retail price but will update this post once I get them.

Been using the LG LH70 42″ HDTV for about a week now have and I’d like to share some of the highlights that I liked about this TV. See my full review after the jump.

The LG 42LH70 is not the slimmest I’ve seen in the LCD category but I think it’s already very thin at under 40mm (my 42-inch Toshiba HDTV is twice as thick). It’s got a glossy black finish in front and a scarlet red finish at the back that gives it an elegant look (see full specs and unboxing photos here).

The base has a wine glass-shaped design and snaps right in fastened with a couple of screws. However, the LCD wobbles on the stand even with a slight tap (feels like it would fall off or snap off easily). The TVcan swivel sideways to a maximum angle of 178 degrees.

Embedded of the right side are a couple of controls for channel switching, volume, menu and input. A huge power button, made of circular translucent/silver plastic, sits on the bottom center and lights up with a red accent when powered up (followed by a 3-second startup music).

At the back panel, the LG Scarlet has a pelthora of ports including USB and HDMI. The TV caneasily read and display photos, music and videos off of any storage device attached via the USB port. The two 7-watt built-in speakers are also invisibly tucked away here somewhere. They are not very loud but is enough for regular TV viewing.

One of the more interesting features with the LG Scarlet is the Bluetooth connectivity. You can pair it with a Bluetooth device (like a phone or a headset) so you can stream music wirelessly. Was able to pair it with my iPhone 3G to stream audio for up to 20 feet away although it gets cut off when blocked by hard walls.

The LCD TV is capable of full HD 1080p output with a contrast ratio 100,000:1 and a fast response time of 2ms. The display is bright and crisp with an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the backlight brightness. There’s an Energy Saver indicator that shows percentage of power consumed/saved depending on the lighting conditions and video playback. With a resolution of 1920 x 1080, 120Mhz refresh rate and a 2ms response time, the LCD is a good display option for PC gaming.

During the product launch, I’ve seen them attach a power meter to the set and show off power usage go as low as around 40 watts to a max of 250watts on this TV. You can set the picture quality to 9 different modes – Intelligent Sensor, Vivid, Standard, Natural, Cinema, Sport, Game, Expert1, Expert2. The same can be done with the aspect ratio as well – 16:9, Just Scan, Original, 4:3, 14:9, Zoom, Cinema Zoom. These two settings allow you to optimize your TV viewing experience.

The LG Scarlet could be something to consider if you’re looking to buy your next HDTV. The LG 42LH70 42″ LCD TV retails for about Php89,990 in stores. Not too cheap but not that expensive either.

This unlimited WAP Data Plan, called Friendster Surf All Day, is available to all Globe prepaid subscribers. Not sure if postpaid subscribers are also included. The Php20 one-time charge will enable users to access m.friendster.com for 24 hours.

Friendster users must have their mobile phones configured to access cellular data using the myGlobe Connect APN to register and use the ‘Friendster Surf All Day’ data plan.

Users that do not have the correct myGlobe APN settings can text GO to 2951 or call Globe Customer Service via 730-1000 or toll free via 211.

Looks like a good deal to the millions of Filipinos still hooked up on Friendster. Instead of spending Php20 an hour in an internet cafe, you get 24 hours access on your mobile phone.

Hopefully, more sites will also be included in this type of service plan (like Twitter, Facebook, etc.).

Update: Turns out Smart Comm is also doing the same service plan to Friendster Mobile to its subscribers (as confirmed by Friendster PR). Only difference is that Smart is charging Php25/24hours.

The improvements are more cosmetic rather than performance related. Check out my quick review of the Lenovo S10-2 below.

What made the S10-2 different from its older S10 sibling is has mostly got to do with the design and construction of the netbook. Under the hood, everything looks the same in terms of CPU, RAM and storage.

Unlike the previous IdeaPad S series, the S10-2 is thinner (about 20%) and lighter (about 15%). The design is also rounded compared to the previous one which squarish which gives the S10-2 a much slimmer look. The lid cover is also glossy (from matte) and has some sort of wallpaper design painted on top (similar to the HP Mini 1100).

The display screen is glossy giving it a bright crisp resolution (1024 x 600pixels). There’s no NVidia Ion here but the usual Mobile Intel GMA 945 chipset.

As seen here on the photo above, the S10-2 is way thinner than the Acer Aspire One D150. Although the S10-2 review unit I have only had a 3-cell battery (instead of a 6-cell), it’s still lighter than the AOD150 without it’s battery latched on. On regular use, the 3-cell battery gives me an improved 3.5 hours battery life.

There’s a WiFi switch on the right side of the netbook beside the two USB ports although a function key (Fn+F5) can also enable/disable WiFi connection. Inside the battery compartment is a SIM card slot for 3G connectivity. This is one of the main features not found in previous models (and very rare in netbooks available locally). Lenovo could have just named this model as S10 3G instead of S10-2.

The problem with the 3G modem is that it doesn’t come with a utility software/driver so if you plug-in your Globe/Smart/Sun SIM, they won’t work unless the telcos provide a custom software for these. I guess they’re not actively doing so because it could eat up on their own USB dongle sales.

The S10-2 also features a one-touch restore button (just beside the power button on the left) as well as a QuickStart button on the right side (pictured above). The Lenovo OneKey Rescue backs up system files and applications to a second partition or an external drive which can later on be used to restore in case of virus infection or system crashes.

The QuickStart is a Linux platform (SplashTop by DeviceVM) that allows you to boot the S10 in seconds to gain access to chat, IM, email and video without booting up Windows XP.
