Lisbon's Bairro Alto neighborhood has managed to become one of the city's most popular and yet still remain among its quirkiest, home to a budding collection of eclectic shopping, raucous nightlife and interesting food. This shot, by Flickr user (flicts), offers a good approximation of what Bairro Alto is all about. The first-person reflection in the fisheye mirror lends us a surprisingly intimate look inside a local shop, making the viewer feel as though they were there, browsing right alongside the photographer.

Common household cleaner shuts down airport terminal

I'm not sure whether this was a case of paranoia, or some really bad fumes, but General Mitchell airport in Milwaukee was briefly shut down yesterday when several TSA agents complained about shortness of breath and "feeling disoriented" after smelling a foul odor coming from a passengers bag.

The terminal was evacuated and rows of ambulances and fire trucks were rushed to the airport.

As it turns out, the "foul odor" was nothing more then the stench from "Goof-Off", a common household cleaning product containing Xylene which happened to be soaked in some rags inside the bag.

Three of the TSA agents were in such bad shape that they had to be transported to a local hospital. All I can imagine is that they must have really freaked out, thinking they had just inhaled something really nasty. Still, I'm not entirely sure it is wise to be traveling with Xylene soaked rags, so let that be a lesson to anyone who was planning to try this during their upcoming summer trip.

Bruce Willis eyeing his own "Die Hard International airport"?

Did you know that Bruce Willis owns his own ski resort in Idaho? I didn't, so when I read that he's planning to build his own airport to serve his Soldier Mountain ski resort I read with great interest.

Normally, the news of a new airport would be fantastic for the area, but they already have an airport, Friedman Memorial Airport, so things are starting to heat up.

Mr Willis has apparently been great for the region, bringing new jobs and investments, so he does have quite a bit of political power, but building a second airport is going to be a bit of a battle. He's only in the preliminary planning stage, with the FAA holding consultations with residents and anyone else who has something to say in the matter.

According to an aviation expert, the new "Willis International" would be too close to the existing airport, but since Friedman is boxed in by canyons, a decision will have to be made as to which airport is the safest option.

New geyeser erupts in Russia

Geysers are a relatively rare geological event. They are the result of some specific conditions that only occur in a few places on Earth, which results when a water source meets rocks that are heated by volcanic magma that is close to the Earth's surface. There are roughly a thousand known geysers across the planet, and about half of those are found in Yellowstone National Park in the United States, including the most famous geyser of all, Old Faithful.

The number of known geysers has recently increased by one however, when a new one erupted for the first time on Russia's remote Kamchatka Peninsula. According to National Geographic, the new geyser has been named "Prikolny," which means "Peculiar" in Russian. Reportedly, a surprised observer of the geyser's first burst shouted out the word when the hot water and steam shot from the ground, and the name has stuck.

According to the story, Peculiar is unique in more ways than one, as it appears that the geyser is also eco-friendly. The geyser shoots water five meters into the air on intervals varying between six and twenty minutes, but when that water falls back to the ground, it is collected once again and recycled to be used for the next eruption.

This new geyser is located in Kronotsky Nature Reserve, not far from the region known as the Valley of the Geysers, which was once a very active geyser field before a landslide covered most of the area back in 2007. The appearnce of Peculiar marks the first new known geyser in the area since the 1960's.

G8 leaders want global aviation emissions cut in half

Leaders at the G8 summit called for a coordinated approach by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to guide aviation's contribution to to reduce global emissions by 50% before 2050.

The commercial aviation industry has agreed to three sequential targets: 1.5 per cent average annual improvement in fuel efficiency between now and 2020; carbon-neutral growth by 2020 and a 50 percent absolute reduction in aviation emissions by 2050 compared with 2005.

The International Air Transport Association's (IATA) director general and chief executive, Giovanni Bisignani, welcomed the G8's declaration. "The G8 Summit declaration is absolutely aligned with the aggressive targets that aviation has set." Bisignani said. "Commercial aviation is the first global industry to commit to a carbon-neutral growth target by 2020. We have a solid track record of meeting our targets."

So while standing-room only might soon be a reality on certain flights, let's hope that airlines don't make the stretch to include treadmills or stationary bicycles to help cut down on emissions...

Homeland Security color coded advisory system to be scrapped?

One of the more insane ways the government is protecting us may soon come to an end.

After 9/11, the previous administration decided that scary colors and a constant "threat level" warning at the airport would help keep people aware of the danger of terrorists.

Of course, the system is pretty useless, and after 6 years, it may come to an end. A committee is meeting next week to decide whether they'll modify or abolish it.

I've never been a fan of the scare tactics, and I think it was pretty obvious to everyone that we'd never reach "blue" or "green". Which essentially means everyone should always be scared and prepared for the worst. The nation has already learned that fear doesn't work too well, so the best course of action is to simply be observant and keep our eyes open for anything out of the ordinary. We don't need snazzy colors and verbal airport warnings to be reminded of that.

So, fingers crossed that common sense prevails, and that we may finally see these stupid signs disappear, along with the scary announcements at the airport.

Cockpit Chronicles: Catching a little show in Paris

To refine a popular saying, "The worst day at an air show beats the best day at work." But what if you're doing both?

That's exactly what happened when Grant Martin, the editor of Gadling, told me that he'd be attending the Paris Air Show and wondered if there was any chance I'd be flying from Boston to Paris that week.

As luck would have it, I was scheduled to be the relief pilot (FB) on his flight. Grant immediately picked up two passes from the Paris Air Show administrators so I could attend the event during the middle of the week, a time normally reserved for the press and industry executives.

I showed up at the gate an hour before the flight and met up with Grant. Realizing he'd have no chance to plead with the agent for an upgrade (see Grant Martin's post on The top 5 myths about getting upgraded) I was at least able to board him early and give him a full tour of the front-end of the airplane.

Grant saw what was involved in the interior preflight as I typed in our co-ordinates for the navigation system and programmed the flight management computer. We checked the overhead panel and set the pressurization, verified the fuel and adjusted the airspeed 'bugs' (markers that tell us when we can take off and retract the flaps).

The captain came aboard and suggested we had plenty of time to get a picture of Grant hanging his head out the window of the 767. The co-pilot, Sean, immediately volunteered to snap the shot from the terminal, and Grant and I stood out the window for a silly pose.

Trekking the Himalaya in India

When adventure travelers set out to hike the Himalaya, they traditionally go to Nepal to take on the Annapurna Circuit or make their way to Everest Base Camp. Some will venture to Tibet or even Bhutan to get their high altitude fix, but many forget that the Himalaya run into India as well, and they offer the same amazing views and cultural interaction.

Travel writer Stan Sesser recently made the journey to Ladakh, India, and wrote about his experiences for the Wall Street Journal. The quaint little villiage, which looks more Tibetan than Indian, sits at 13,000 feet and is a two hour hike from the nearest road. But despite it's remote location, Sesser round ancient Bhuddist temples, hosbitable villagers, and towering, snow capped peaks.

Sesser says he paid $688 to a local trekking service to gain access to the region, and for his money he received a guide, a cook, a horesman, and five horses to carry their gear along a 40 mile mountain trail. Over the course of the next five days, he and guides explored mountain passes ranging from 10,000 to 16,000 feet, passing through villages that don't appear on maps even to this day, and remain virtually unchanged from the way they were centuries ago.

Piss in the ocean, not in the pool and other TripAdvisor reader thoughts

So much of life is governed by "unwritten rules," but beaches and pools are surprisingly short of convention to cite. Public opinion is all over the map on what matters most - and what can lead to a heated conversation. But, there are still a few hot buttons that irritate the world. According to a recent survey of 3,800 people by TripAdvisor, 69 percent encounter some breach of etiquette, with 13 percent taking the cynical view that everyone breaks these undocumented standards.

The most common violations at the beach and pool are hogging beach chairs, pissing in the water and littering, while the most annoying are loud music, smoking and, yet again, draining into the water ... though you can get away with doing this in the ocean if you aren't too close to anybody. And, in praise of double standards, more respondents believe that women can get away with skimpy beach gear than feel men should wear speedos.

So, what enrages?

Discrimination on the runway: Delta's uniform sizing

Delta is under fire from its new partner Northwest Airlines due to what they claim is weight discrimination. Delta's signature bright red dress, which debuted on the NY runways in 2005 and hit the airways in 2006, only comes in up to size 18.

"Red is a color that attracts attention and someone, somewhere has made a decision that they don't want to attract attention to someone in a dress that's larger than a size 18," says Patricia Reller, vice chair of the Northwest flight attendants' union's grievance committee. "I'm very offended by it," she adds.

The committee also filed complaints in regards to Delta's "requirement that flight attendants who wear orthopedic shoes must wear slacks and not a skirt or dress. Those that wear the orthopedic shoes must obtain a doctor's note," according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Designer of the red dress, Richard Tyler (pictured), was reportedly envisioning the flights of yore, when everyone dressed up to fly, and well ... apparently when flight attendants wore heels and were under size 18. Delta, whose flight attendants have no union, claims that there are plenty of options for fuller figured employees, including slacks, skirts, and other dresses.

Because Northwest's flight attendants have a union, this merger may mean a lot of changes for Delta.

What do you need for breakfast on the road?

I'm a big fan of breakfast - a big Western breakfast, with eggs and bacon and toast and coffee. And my friend once pointed out after we emerged from our guesthouse in Nha Trang, Vietnam at 4pm after a wild Halloween night that no matter what time of day it is, I need to eat breakfast-y food for my first meal.

When I researched Thailand for Lonely Planet last fall, I ate Thai all the time despite the availability of Western food in tourist towns - except for breakfast. The one or two times I actually craved a Thai breakfast (a savory bowl of rice soup with meat) made me feel that I was finally getting under the skin of the country. I mentioned my need for eggs and toast to another traveler, who said it was that way for many other travelers she knew.

How about you, reader-traveler? Does your body crave the protein, carbs, and salt from eggs, toast, and bacon (or whatever your particular breakfast favorite is), or are you able to dive into the country's breakfast you're visiting?

We don't think Kent was flying a plane when he captured this lightning bolt (um, were you, Kent?), but even if he was, we think it was well worth putting his passengers lives in jeopardy. (Only kidding.)

Travel and Leisure names Virgin America best domestic, Singapore best international carriers

The prestigious Travel and Leisure "World's Best" awards were announced today, covering everything from best hotels to best islands to best airlines. Not surprisingly, no legacy carriers were in the top domestic airlines list -- as we expected, Virgin America and JetBlue were the winners. And how couldn't they be? With in-seat video, internet and hipsters on their side it's hard to compete.

On the international side, Singapore Airlines wins once again, with all-star global service including private rooms on their delightful A380's.

Texans denied entry into Ireland

This story is an example of a traveler's nightmare as well as what it's like to win the lottery--an is the glass half empty or half full sort of tale.

Three strapping young men, high school graduates from Plano, Texas landed in Dublin, Ireland ready to embark on a back-packing trip around Europe. They were eager. Excited. If you've done a similar trip, you know the feeling. Then they were asked two magic questions by immigration that they didn't know the answer to.

"Where are you staying?" and "How much money do you have?" They needed a bank statement to prove they were solvent. They came up with goose eggs on both accounts.

They didn't have a place to stay yet, therefore, no address. Evidently, they didn't have proof of enough funds either so there they were. Instead of following where their adventurous selves felt like going, they were sent back to New York City.

Hearing of their plight, and that shame had befallen Ireland that prides itself on being friendly, an upscale hotel group d4hotels.ie has offered the trio an all expenses paid trip back to Ireland. They've also been offered free cell phone service for a week and probably free pints of Guinness.

The three have accepted the offer, but feel nervous about the black mark on their passports. Hopefully, their best dreams are coming true and that Plano will be left behind for awhile. Let's see if any other countries want to show how friendly they are.

Seattle Luxury Chocolate Salon: Go there for a chocolate fix

If you've ever walked into an upscale candy store like I did on Thursday when I walked into Posh Chocolat in Missoula, Montana, you know how your eyes are drawn to those glass cases after you/ve had whiff of that rich and creamy smell. You know how each piece of chocolate is so darned pretty that it's hard to chose. Again, that's what happened to me at Posh Chocolat.

Think about how that experience might be multiplied by more than 30. That's how many gourmet and artisan chocolatiers will be at the Seattle Luxury Chocolate Salon this Sunday, July 12.

The chocolatiers are among the finest of the fine. Along with tasting all types of chocolate, with the entry fee you can attend demonstrations, talks and on-going interviews by TasteTV's Chocolate Television program. Wine is also involved with the event and one of the demonstrations is about a chocolate spa.

For the best ticket deal, get a ticket on-line for $20. At the door, you'll pay $25. Kids under 6 are free and from ages 7-12, $10. The salon is being held at the Bell Harbor Conference Center.

Look for Posh Chocolat's offerings for sure. The truffles are AMAZING! Our sister blog, Luxist has a rundown of some of the other chocolatiers and speakers. If you miss this year's, there's always next year. This year is the 2nd annual event. I'm assuming there will be a 3rd.
