Compared with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/X120/">X120</a>, the body here appears to have a slightly wider form factor and the front <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/lg-x120-unboxing-and-hands-on-1/2001257/">doesn't curve quite as dramatically</a>. All the FCC is testing for is Bluetooth and WiFI -- sorry 3G hopefuls -- but specs-wise, we'd venture a guess and say it's sporting a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 160GB HDD, 1GB RAM... you know, the same specs found in virtually every other <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/netbook/">netbook</a> in existence. With that said, we'd love to see what <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nokia/">Nokia</a> had in mind when they concocted this one. As <em>Unwired View </em>recently unearthed, the Finnish phone maker has drawn up a design doc / patent application for comfortable, stretchable material that fits over your skin and is used for device interaction. Gestures and stretches are computed and signaled into nearby computers, phones, or interestingly enough "near-eye displays" -- sounds like we're getting into a bit of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/virtualreality">virtual</a> / <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/augmentedreality">augmented reality</a> territory here -- and they are also tailored to provide feedback via vibration. And yet, despite the evidence, the company claims its gadget was "independently developed" and has nothing to do with the Kindle. Sure, whatever you say, wink wink, nod nod. While the bot has previously been able to display a full range of expressions through some pre-programmed facial movements, it's now able to <span style="font-style: italic;">teach itself</span> how to smile or display other emotions thanks to a new trial-and-error technique dubbed "body babble." That apparently works by comparing Einstein's attempts at an expression with some facial recognition software, which provides Al with some positive feedback each time he manages an actual expression. At a T-Mobile- and Google-sponsored event in San Francisco earlier today, Andy Rubin (you know, <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/andy+rubin/">the Android dude</a>) discussed upcoming releases in Android's pipeline starting with <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/Donut/">Donut</a>, which we've already heard mentioned, but then progressing to "Eclair" and "Flan" without mentioning specific timelines. He didn't bust out any comprehensive roadmaps, but he waxed poetic about some of the social-centric possibilities -- for example, being kept abreast of a contact's Facebook photo and latest update every time they call -- and mentioned that developers will soon have additional options for charging for apps (presently, Google Checkout is the only way to handle it, but carrier billing is coming soon).<br /><br />He also reiterated that the hardware pipeline for Android is staggeringly massive, with <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/05/28/google-at-least-18-android-phones-coming-this-year/">15 to 20 phones coming this year alone</a>. Our friends at <em>Mobile Crunch</em> have it on word from a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/HTC/">HTC</a> spokesperson that a "vast majority of devices we launch after <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Hero/">Hero</a>" are gonna be including a 3.5mm headphone jack as a standard feature. The rep also added that devices already announced would "not necessarily be part of this change," which while not ruling it out entirely, doesn't get our hopes up. Part browser, part OS, the word on the street is that Gazelle will be announced soon, and ultimately compete in some way with either Chrome (the browser) or Chrome (the OS). As usual, most of this is just based on hopes and fairytales, but the scholarly folks at <em>Ars Technica</em> have done some digging and come up with a white paper from Microsoft Research that details some of what Gazelle is all about -- and surprise surprise, although it shares some similarities with Chrome, it's actually quite different.<br /><br />At the most general level, Gazelle is an experiment in building an ultrasecure browser. Like Chrome, it breaks tasks up into different processes, but instead of separating at the page level, Gazelle breaks individual page <em>elements</em> into different processes, allowing content from different servers to be isolated and ultimately providing fine-grained security controls. To manage all these different processes, there's a central "kernel," which is where all the OS talk stems from -- it's all still running on Windows, and the rendering engine is still IE's Trident engine, but Gazelle manages all those separate processes independently, kind of like a virtualized OS. It's certainly interesting stuff, but it's still all just a research project for now -- Chrome OS is still vapor, but it's clear that Google intends to ship something, while Gazelle seems more suited to inspire future versions of IE. Well, Datawind is hoping that it'll have better luck with its new PocketSurfer3 and UbiSurfer devices, which are both now apparently officially on track for a US release. The PocketSurfer3 (pictured above) is a fairly modest update to the PocketSurfer2, with it adding an improved screen and updated UI and, most perhaps importantly, a lower $249 price tag that also includes a year of free cellular usage (up to 30 hours a month). The UbiSurfer, on the other hand, is a more traditional netbook-style device (check it out after the break), although it harkens back a bit to the pre-Atom days with a 7-inch screen, 1GB of storage, 128MB of RAM and an unspecified, presumably low-power processor. The good news, however, is that it includes the same year of free service as the PocketSurfer3, and packs an even lower $199 price tag. The kids at <em>Digital Photography Review</em> have got their hands on the thing and have been kind enough to give us an extensive review. Rocking a Four Thirds imaging sensor, HD-video mode (with stereo sound recording), a multi-aspect sensor, and a video-optimized lens, the camera is essentially the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dmc-g1">G1</a> with HD-video, according to the review. Not that that's a bad thing, especially when noting that it has "the best implementation of video on a 'non-compact camera' that we've seen so far." Among the camera's strong points are its resolution, size and weight, build quality, image stabilization, and shutter-speed simulation. Still the reviewer didn't look kindly upon the camera's relatively small amount of RAW headroom, fairly low powered flash, poor battery life, and a loud shutter sound for a non-SLR camera. But overall? It's cool, though, Cradlepoint managed to find a tricky angle: you can't charge the MiFi, use it as a USB modem, and have WiFi enabled at the same time! Those fibers are each less than one millimeter in diameter, and are comprised of eight nested layers of light-detecting materials, which the researchers are able to form using an extrusion process like that used to make optical fiber for telecommunication applications. Once woven into a fabric, the researchers say the "camera" could be anything from a foldable telescope to a soldier's uniform that gives them greater situational awareness. Continuing the confusion over what handsets actually get the full Google blessing, this version of the I7500 runs pretty much bone-stock Android, but isn't a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/28/google-at-least-18-android-phones-coming-this-year/">"Google Experience"</a> phone, which in this case apparently means that firmware updates have to be loaded manually over USB instead of being pushed over the air. Other devices have been flashed between the networks for years, so we've no doubt that this is possible, but we doubt it'll ever be super-easy -- according to Cleanser, the hardest part was getting someone to add his device's MEID to the system, and that's always gonna be tough, regardless of VZW's big talk about <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/19/verizon-opens-up-about-any-apps-any-device/">open network access</a>. When asked yesterday if this was the case, Murdoch answered: "I don't think that's likely. We're <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/06/report-rupert-murdoch-forms-global-team-looks-into-hardware-fo/">looking and talking</a> to a lot of laboratories and big companies around the world like Sony, Fujitsu, Samsung. We're all working on wireless readers for books or for newspapers or for magazines. I think they're a year or two away, being marketed in a mass way, high quality ones. And we will be absolutely neutral. We're very happy to have our products distributed over any device provided it's only going to subscribers who are paying for it." Of course, the man may have some sort of diabolical scheme up his sleeve (when doesn't he, really?), but for the time being, he says, the <em>Wall Street Journal</em> is doing "very well... you've got the wallstreetjournal.com and you pay for it. And there is 1.25 million people nearly who are doing that. And we get a lot of advertising with it. It's a big business for us." So it's more likely that we'll see more News Corp papers adopting an online subscription model before the advent of any Fox News e-ink device. But if it does get in the hardware business, we'll gladly shell out for a Glenn Beck signature model. Among the myriad revelations, it turns out Eric Schmidt wasn't stoked on building a browser when Sergey Brin and Larry Page brought it up about six years ago, given the fact that Google was still relatively small, and the browser wars were still fresh in everyone's minds. After he saw an early build of Chrome, however, he changed his tune. He says Chrome and Chrome OS are "game-changers," and Larry describes Chrome OS as the "anti-operating system" and indistinguishable from a browser. <br /><br />Luckily, they also hinted at some native development possibility (hopefully) outside of the browser, stating that Microsoft is free to build a version of Internet Explorer for Chrome OS if they'd like, and that it's an open source project. According to Eric: "Even if we had an evil moment, we would be unsuccessful." He also mentioned there were plenty of "commonalities" between Chrome OS and Android, and that the two might grow even closer over time. <em>Interesting</em>. As for his role on Apple board, Eric will be working out with those folks as to when he needs to recuse himself from OS talk like he already does with iPhone talk. At the center of the console is an 8-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dual-view">dual-view</a> touchscreen that allows you, the driver, to monitor the on-board navigation maps while your passenger simultaneously watches a TV or a DVD -- in silence, if they choose, with the aid of headphones. There's also a large driver-side virtual instrument cluster that, for better or worse, replaces the physical speedometer, rev counter, and fuel and temperature gauges. As a 12.3-inch "high-definition" display it dynamically morphs into warning messages, menus, and colors (red for fast!) that provide the driver with the most relevant information required at the time. The XJ also packs a Bowers &amp; Wilkins 1200W audio system with 20 B&amp;W speakers pumped through 15 channels of audio processing. The XJ is also the first automotive application of Dolby Pro Logic IIx tech with choice of DTS Neo:6 to enjoy 7.1 surround sound with your films. When you're in park of course. This $900ish ultra-portable is the very symbol of what tends to go wrong at Sony: beautiful hardware is crippled by software leaving consumers wondering why they paid a premium for such an undistinguished user experience. Now <em>Techradar</em> is reporting that Sony has a VAIO P "mark 2" ready to launch in October or November -- we suspect right after Windows 7 launches. The only real detail provided is that the "mark 2" will feature a "much-improved boot-up time." The company sees Android's free nature being the perfect match for the Chinese market, and plans to release its low-cost RK2808 chipset in October to take advantage of that. In addition to Android, Rockchip claims the RK2808 enables additional multimedia capability over what's currently available in Android handsets. Well, Axxis is trying to address this problem with a new dual-factor security lock -- requiring a PIN alongside fingerprint identification -- which allows you to customize access times for each registered user and also spy on their comings and goings.
