> First off, I am a complete Vista novice, having only installed Vista 64
> bit on a new machine a few days ago.
>
> I use a Logitech USB headset and as per the subject line, any sounds
> picked up by the microphone play out through the earhpones. The headset is
> selected as default as both playback and recording devices, and reducing
> the headset volume also reduces the volume of the feedback from the
> microphone, but then I can't hear anything at all :-) Reducing the mic
> volume (under "recording devices") helps somewhat, but even at 0 volume I
> can hear mic sounds through the earphones. Clicking the mute icon solves
> it completely, except for the fact that no-one can hear what I'm saying
> :-)
>
> I plugged the headset back into the XP machine and everything is fine on
> that. How do I fix the Vista machine?
>
> TIA
I found this site doing a google search on my problem.
I use a RAID setup with the os on c and fsx is on d. The drive is partition.
I was getting a problem with smoke and dust effects showing as blocks.
Checking through the various flight sim web sites, the general solution was to do a repair of fsx to solve the problem. I did that and the problem did go away for a time. It came back up about a week ago, so I did the same thing, a repair of fsx and acceleration today. Problem compounded.
Other than that, a complete un-install/re-install. Not something I truely want to. For those of you who have fsx, you understand why.

When I go to start fsx I get the below error msg.

Problem signature:
> Ok this has got to be one of the more annoying problems for me . Even more
> than
> the random folder view every time you enter a folder.
>
> I have a foler that collects a large number of small files for a program
> that
> I use.. Typically they are under 50k in size but often there can be
> close to
> 200,000 in a single folder.
>
> If I want to delete one it can take several minutes to delete it...
>
> It will sit at "preparing to delete" for what seems like forever.
>
> The more files in a folder the longer it takes...
>
> Now my computer is arguably top of the line it has an intel s3200 MB
> with a
> xeon quad core and 4 gigs of ram and terrabyte hard drives.
>
> It should not take 15 minutes to delete 1,000 of the 200,000 files,
>
> Additionally these files are on a second internal physical drive and
> should
> have nothing to do with the rest of the system.
>
> Oh and one other note. Mass deleting files from a command prompt works
> fine.
> so if I want to delete everything in the folder via a command prompt it
> works
> as expected but if I try via windows explorer it takes forever.
>
> Has M$ come out with a patch for this yet? I am on service pack 2 of
> vista
> ultimate and it has all the updates that were presented via the update
> utility.
>
> Thanks for any help
>
> Not automatically, no. When you install most programs you're given a choice
> of where to install them. Choose your D: drive. In the meantime, you can
> move your data to that drive, either by relocating your Documents, Music,
> Pictures, etc. or by just moving the data to it. You can also uninstall
> programs and reinstall them to the D: drive. Understand that some files

I have Excel 7 along with Vista. I am having problems in coloring the cells as well as coloring the text in the cell. It was so easy in previous versions of excel. I never had any trouble with this simple function.

Cell/Row Highlight:
But in 7, I don't know what'g wrong when I select the whole row and click on the format color, on selecting any color for the row or cell, it never gets highlighted.
Why this is happening ?

Text Hilight:
When I highlight text in any cell and apply color to it, the hilight color only appears when I click on the text. As get out of the text from that cell, the text goes back to normal color. Why this is happening ?

I am not sure whether I need to change any settings for 7 to do this.. I looked at the help. It simply says select the cells or rows and simply selects the desired color from the Format menu..

I am not sure why microsoft makes things so complicated.. In the older versions, in tools and options, quite a few useful options are there to checks all these settings.. this version is so cumbersome..
Any help please ..???

We all know how temperatures can affect system performance (specially if you Over Clock, but this is another subject)

I find myself living a few degrees north of the Equator in the island if Puerto Rico. Temperarures here are generally tolerable thru out the year. But summer time can be really hot!!

So here are some tips to keep your system cool specially in summer time.
For the following If you dont know much about Computer hardware Its recommended to get someone who knows to do the job or to help you.

1. Clean the clutter around your pc. let it breathe!

2. Clean out the vents. Get a paint brush or tooth brush and clean the dust.

3. Time to open the case.

4. Take the case fans out and clean them.

5. Clean the CPU fan And heat sink, when ready to install back in place, clean out the old thermal grease and apply a new coat of high grade thermal compound. (you will get better heat transfer spending a few pennies xtra than buying the cheap stuff)

6. Take everything out of the case and clean it! Clean the case completly, get rid of them dead roaches and cob webs!

7. Take your time when reasembling. This is a very important step!
When assembling take the time to reorganize your wiring to improve air flow. Tuck away unsused PSupply cables. Use some elctrical tape or plastic ties to pick up dangling cables. If using IDE 40/80 pin cables try to fold them neatly. (there are pre-folded IDE cables for sale) Do this and your system will look better and further more will stay cooler by improving air flow.

8. Check your fans, make sure that they all work! Including the one inside the Power Supply. (If this fan is not working is time to get a new power supply unit, DO NOT attemp to replace this fan!!!! Nor to open the Power Supply!!! May result In DEATH!!! As high voltage residual charge is left in the unit even when unplugged!!!

9. Spend a few buck in some good fans if you are not satisfied with your temps (Use For example Everest to monitor system temps)
I replaced all stock fans from my system to higher grade ones Including Video card fans. There is total drop of 20 degrees f. in idle and a 30 degrees f. while playing games.

(Nornal v-card temps were 149f idle/186f running. Now 133f idle/ 156f running.)(CPU normal 117f idle/ 150f on full load. Now 103f Idle/133f on load)
(Ambient temps 115F/ now 105f)

A chipset Fan is also welcome.

And if you are still not satified you can do the following:

1.Move your PC to an air condioned room.

2.Use an external fan to blow on your PC

3.Invest in water cooling (this works wonders if you have around $200 to invest)

4. There in another device in the market (dont know the name of it) but it is said to work like an internal air conditioner for the CPU an other periferals. The cost is around $1200

5.Move to the North pole! I heard is quite chilly there. One may think your PC will stay cool enough the whole year!!

To finalize....do this your system will thank you!! will run smother when cooler. And you will be extending the life of your system...

>
> Set-Content -Encoding UTF8 ....works great
>
> Add-Content -Encoding UTF8.....adds strange chars to the beginning of

This may be a stupid question, but are you using Add-Content to add
data to a file that was created as a Windows UTF-8 file?

There's a well-known issue with Windows UTF-8 files where they include
a BOM, where most Linux/Unix/Other utilities may not be expecting
it. If you're adding to an existing file, and you're not sure if it
has the BOM, then maybe it might be best to just read the old file,
add your data, and then over-write the file.

I've experienced crashes a few times over the three years I've had my current computer. I upgraded to Vista from XP about two years ago; and, about a year ago had to reinstall and reformat the computer after a system crash.

The error message I am getting now is similar to the one I got a year ago when the system failed. However, this time, I simply cannot interface with the computer. The screen brings up an "HP" logo with directions to push "esc" "f10" etc, and if I put the boot disc in, I get the message "Push 'f' to format or 'q' to quit."

Normally, I would be able to push 'q' and I'm good to go.

What is happening now is that I cannot communicate with the computer at all. It doesn't recognize, record, or respond to any input.

I thought maybe my keyboard was broken, but cleaning and switching the keyboard didn't help. I still cannot communicate with the computer to get into the boot menu.

What is my next step? Am I at a loss, and the computer is kaput? There is no major data on the hard drive, everything is backed up, but my powerful desktop is not working, and I kind of need it to.

Thank you for any help you or advice you may have.

>>
>> If you want to play with AD, the best method is to put the server in
>> Local Only and give it a static IP in its own IP subnet (ie not the same
>> one as the host). You can then set up AD in its own domain with its own
>> DNS (and DHCP if you like).
>>
>> With only 2G of memory you are pretty limited, but you could probably
>> run an XP guest as well if you give both server and client 512M each.
>> Put the guest in Local Only as well and it should get its network config
>> from DHCP on the server.

> Thanks Bill,
> I'm 99% certain I chose to not join a forest/domain at this point when
> setting up 2.3
> Is this what you meant? I'm not sure how to specify local only.
> I don't want another guest to talk to the server. Simply using .NET code
> to talk to AD on the server.
> Can you tell me where I assign the IP, Subnet addresses and set the DNS
> and DHCP options please?

Where are you planning to talk to AD from? The host machine? I would not
recommend that. I also suggest you do a bit more reading on AD!

You select Local Only for the NIC in the guest from the vm settings for
the guest machine.
The laptop is also running Vista.
When I go to Add New Printer, the printer is recognized by the laptop.
That's when I get the error that the driver is incorrect.

My roomates computer has an issue that I have not been able to solve all week. here's the gist of it. The computer connects wireless, and is able to get an IP from router. I can ping the router, and other computers on the network. All other comupters on network are able to access the internet.

One thing that is happening is the DHCP Service keeps stopping on me. I've perused the posts on here looking for answer's. Here's a list of all I've done.

Disabled then enabled wireless adapter
uninstall/reinstall wireless adapter
manually set IP address
repaired winsock/winsock2 entries using LSPFix.exe and "netsh winsock reset" command (elevated to admin)
ran virus scan (AVG 8.0.169) with no hits
ran AD-aware SE (1 hit, removed, did not solve issue)
ran RegCure with 999 hits, cleaned, did not solve problem
Try'd to do a "system restore"..but the computer couldn't do it (hard drive has 6% free space)

I'd give a screenshot of the error, but its on another comp. Here's what it says:

"Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available."

Any help is appreciated.

I updated my sound card drivers , installed latest Flash Player and Java.
If you are running Vista 64 on one of them and Vista 32 on the other..

I am assuming that you know how to and have made the necessary share
permissions on the computer which is hosting the printer.

To share a network printer being hosted by a computer running a 32 bit
operating system with another computer running a 32 bit operating system,
Vista or XP, you would go to Control Panel > 'Printers' > 'Add Printer' >
'Add a network printer'. Apologies to any of you who consider that I am
stating the obvious. In fairness, it is obvious.

Sharing a printer being hosted by a computer running 32 bit Vista or XP with
a computer running 64 bit Vista is not obvious, because if you use the above
method, it will not work.
So how? First, you need to know the name of the computer which hosts the
printer, and the name of the printer to be shared.

Sitting at the host computer: The procedure is the same for Vista and XP

Start > My Computer > Properties > Computer Name tab > Change button. Write
down the name that you see here because this is the computer name.

Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes > Right click on the printer to be
shared > Properties > Sharing tab. Write down the name that you see here
because this is the printer name.

OK. Now sit in front of the Vista 64 computer:
Start > Control Panel > Printers > Add printer > Add a local printer > Click
on 'Create a new port' > 'Local Port' > 'Next'.

The port name will look like this: \\Computer name\printer name

So enter the names already retrieved, ensuring that you use the same format,
then click 'OK'.

At this point, you will be presented with the 'Add New Hardware' process.
You can either select the make and model of your printer from the lists or
insert your printer installation disk if you can't find yours. The printer
will be added, and you should be able to print a test page.

Another solution is to use a print server. There are three options if you
take this route.
1. Replace your router with one which includes a print server. This is the
most expensive option.
2. Acquire a wired print server unit and connect it to your existing
router. Beware the cheapest units as they will invariably be USB 1.1
compliant only.
3. Acquire a wireless print server. Setup may not always be
straightforward, but the printer can be moved around.

The benefit of any of the three options above is that the printer is
available all of the time, not being reliant on a host computer's power
state, but they all cost $$$ or more.

Hi
It's been a while since i've listed anything on this brilliant forum due to the fact that with people like Brink/ Shawn giving you infomation regarding a problem you've got, you suddenly don't have that problem anymore!
So, as this goes against my usual grain, in the space of just 4 days I have had 2 crcdisk.sys boot errors, which have resulted in 2 complete rebuilds - not a happy bunny, I can tell you.
I'm running an ASUS P5N32-E SLI that's fully flashed to latest BIOS and have happily run it with a Q6600, 4 gig RAM and Vista x64 Ultimate on SATA RAID0 for the last 18 months and had no problems whatsoever. However, on Monday I put the computer to sleep instead of shutting down, so just pressed the "off" button and went to bed - big mistake! Next morning, defaults have been loaded at POST, it wouldn't boot and going through safe mode showed the dreaded "crcdisk.sys" stopping place in the boot list, so tried and tried to no avail and then spent 12 hours reloading, updating and installing right up to SP2.
Woke up this morning, switched on and suddenly the POST screen flashes up and it says that defaults have been loaded for some reason and lo and behold! we're off again with "crcdisk.sys" error and once again, it's taken another 10/ 12 hours to get back to a semblence of order.
My question is this: is there ANY workaround when faced with the crcdisk.sys error? Bearing in mind I run a SATA RAID set-up, so the problem does appear to be the loss or corruption of the Nvidia SATA RAID boot drivers. Surely someone must have worked out a way of salvaging their operating system rather than doing a rebuild? I have tried repair but that doesn't work, even if you wait for 3 hours for it to end its cycle, nor does the memory check do anything of value.
Have searched Google but nothing's come of that, so i'm hoping one of you guys with the big brains can sort this out.
By the way, sorry if in wrong topic/ section.
Many thanks

Hello,

I have just bought an Asus N51VC with Windows Vista and this laptop disconnects randomly from Internet. It is not that it lose the Wifi signal , but it looks like the laptop stops recieving data after a while; Firefox (or IE) tries to get the web page and eventualy displays an empty page (white, without error message). Then, I have to disconnect my laptop from the Wifi signal and to re-connect it to the same signal so that it works again.
I have in parallel two other laptops (Windows XP and Windows Server 2003) and when Internet does not work on my Asus N51VC it works without problem on two other PCs.

Here is all I have already try, unsuccessfully:
- I have updated the Wifi driver
- I have installed the SP2 of Vista
- I have uninstalled all Antiviruses, Firewalls, Defenders ...
- I have forced my computer no to deactivate my wifi card (even in case of energy saving)
- I have tried with or without fixed IP with or without the DNS recommended by my ISP
- I have reinstalled the initial image of the OS such as supplied by the manufacturer

I do not know any more what I can do; does somebody would have any idea?

Thank you
