When it comes to the user interface, Nokia has already been surpassed by Apple and Palm. To make things worse, recent videos of the UI on the HTC Hero releasing July 15th makes the current Nokia lineup outdated. It’s obviously time for a facelift. When will we see the next Nokia device with a refreshing WOW factor?

Here’s a video from Slashgear showing a pre-production HTC Hero’s UI. It looks pretty and responsive. (Head to the blog if it’s not visible in your RSS readers)

Nokia fans, what do you think of this device?
We had lunch at Green Papaya Thai restaurant and had the Nokia N97 to take photos of the food. There was a large window behind me with enough light coming in. I made sure to force the Nokia N97 to keep the flash off. Take a look.

The photos below were taken with a Nokia N97 Euro (RM-505) with firmware v11. The camera settings were on auto mode with flash off.

It’s been a while since I had Thai iced tea, and Green Papaya reminded me how much I liked it.

We ordered calamari as one of our appetizers. It looked like onion rings and there are better-tasting ones from other places.

Our table also had tofu with peanut sauce for appetizer. I don’t usually eat tofu, but it was pretty good with the sauce.

I usually order curry in a Thai place so I was glad someone else ordered pepper steak. Sweet and not too spicy. I liked it.

I ordered chicken panang curry. It’s creamy and not too spicy. I used to love spicy food, but I can’t handle them anymore.

The third entree on the table was vegetable massaman curry. It’s also a mild curry with a hint of coconut. Not bad. I’d order it with chicken or beef though.

Thoughts

The photos look a little off on white balance. I believe it’s because of two conflicting light sources. There were a bunch of light bulbs (incandescent) around inside the restaurant and a large window behind me letting in light from the cloudy outdoors. You can pick a white balance setting in the Nokia N97 camera instead of leaving it on automatic. Picking one of the two would have resulted in more consistent photos.

Share Online. If you follow me on Twitter, you would’ve seen these photos already because I was snapping and uploading these photos immediately using Share Online with Pixelpipe.

Here’s the same photo on 100% crop. I can’t see a motion blur. The ball looks frozen in the sky!

Here’s another sample from the Nokia N97.

…and the same photo at 100% crop. My buddies are obviously moving, but the Nokia N97 froze them in the photo without blur on their legs, arms, or the ball!

I didn’t even realize the fast exposure until I was asked if the photos were taken in sport mode.
Since Flickr is already my main image host, I no longer need to use other services like Twitpic to share my photos on Twitter. Add the special Flickr2Twitter email to Pixelpipe/Nokia Share Online and you should be set to Flickr and Tweet and Flickr and Tweet and Flickr and Tweet…

Flickr also gave us short URLs for our accounts, but haven’t announced it yet. For example mine is http://flic.kr/mackarus. What’s yours?
It meets my needs better than any other devices currently out there including other Nokia phones or competitors like the Apple iPhone. That said, nothing is perfect. Here’s a list of 10 things I think Nokia should address in the upcoming firmware reported to come on July 1st.

1. The keylock has a mind of its own. Sometimes, it requires two slides to unlock the phone.

2. Photos in the gallery are lower-resolution versions of the actual photos. Zooming in shows ugly pixels.

3. When Nokia Messaging goes down, the phone becomes unusable if you have the widget on the main screen. I had to take the battery out 4 times to restart the phone until I realized to act quickly and remove the Email widget from the main screen.

4. I sometimes get weird grey bars showing on photos I upload using Nokia Share online. Here’s an example.

5. The Share Online widget only shows photos from OVI service. I don’t like being misled. Flickr is a service included within Share Online and a service that I use more often. This widget should have Flickr photos too.

6. Does the compass really need to be calibrated each time we start Nokia maps? It looks funny if we do it in the middle of the street.

7. Typing numbers can’t be done by long-pressing a button. This is available to other Nokia Qwerty phones like the Nokia E75 and E71 as well as every T9 phones we’ve had!

8. Microphone input volume is very low in video recording. Here’s a sample video.

9 and 10. Above are eight bugs and issues I’ve found while using the Nokia N97 the past two weeks. The title of this post says ten. The other two (or more) come from other Nokia N97 owners!

If you have the Nokia N97, what other issues have you found that Nokia should fix in the upcoming firmware update?
This reminded me that I can take videos on the spot and share with my friends (almost) live from my Nokia phone with Qik.

Convenience

If my buddy wants to share his video online he’ll have to transfer the video from cam to PC first, then PC to Youtube. With my phone, all I have to do is open the Qik app to stream live and it will announce to my Twitter and Facebook automatically if they want to watch. There’s even an option to copy the video over to Youtube automatically or manually with one-click.

I tested Qik today on the Nokia N97 with 3 videos and set it to the nHD quality (640×352 resolution). Check it out below.

Basketball in the AM

Hula hoops

Problems. Qik sounds very simple, right? Just shoot and it’ll be there for everyone to watch before you arrive home. No extra steps needed.

I noticed some problems though. If I’m not connected to wifi, the video will be very laggy to the people watching it live. It reminds me of watching a Youtube video with a 56K modem. Remember those days?

I was connected to AT&T’s 3G network and streaming with the 640×352 resolution takes about double the length of the stream to finish uploading the whole thing. However most of my friends will most likely discover the videos much later so they won’t even notice the delay.
This is possible thanks to the “Share Online” app within the camera using a free service called Pixelpipe. I borrowed my wife’s new iPhone 3G S yesterday to see if I can do the same thing. My experience reminded me why I like my Nokia phones.

Nokia N97 with my favorite app, Nokia Share Online

Straight to the point, the problem is the iPhone 3G S can’t do real multitasking. When I use Pixelpipe on both devices, I take the photo, type the title, then click upload. On a Nokia device like the Nokia N97, Pixelpipe immediately hides in the background while it is uploading so I’m free to do something else like take more photos.

On the iPhone, I’m forced to look at the upload status bar which is annoying if I’m uploading multiple photos, video, or have a slow connection. Exiting out of the screen disrupts the upload and I’m forced to start over when opening the app again.

A workaround I found on the iPhone is that I can send the photo as an email so it can upload in the background while I do other things. But, there’s a catch! It will turn the 3 megapixel photo into a 0.5 megapixel photo (800×600 resolution) and there’s no current way of changing that.

The iPhone is not for me.

The Nokia N97 in this review is the Euro version (RM-505) running firmware version 10 dated May 15th, 2009.

Size

On paper, the Nokia N97 isn’t that much thicker or longer than a candybar phone like the Nokia N82, but the combination of the extended measurements makes the Nokia N97 feel big in the hand.

Build

The build quality of the Nokia N97 is really good. It feels like an expensive device just holding it in my hands. The edge of the N97 is wrapped in a chrome-looking material while the rest is either white or black depending on the the version. I don’t hear loose parts when I shake the phone or hear any creaks when pressing into the body.

The slide mechanism is rock solid. I hear the nice click-clack sounds and find myself opening and closing the slider just to hear it. I don’t notice any wobbles at all either.

Keyboard

The keyboard on the Nokia N97 separates reviewers. Some hate it while others love it. I think those who hate it only used the phone for a couple of minutes. After testing the keyboard with several emails and text messages, I have to give thumbs up to whoever designed this. It’s not perfect, but it is pretty damn good!

At first, it felt weird because the spacebar is located on the right, but it actually works well because it is comfortably placed under my right thumb. I’m not sure if this makes it very uncomfortable for left-handed persons, though.

Keyboard buttons on the Nokia N97

Complaints. I can type really fast on the Nokia N97, but there’s room for improvement. The keyboard is not perfect. Here are a couple of my complaints:

To type a number, I have to press the function key on the lower right corner, then the corresponding button on the top row. I’ve used plenty of T9 and Qwerty phones and the numbers have always been accessible by simply holding a button. This is not the case on the Nokia N97. Implement this ASAP please!

Another problem I notice is the buttons’ feedback. By default, the keypad tones are on. I suggest leaving that ON because it helps you feel (or hear) that you are pressing the buttons. The Nokia N97’s buttons pop out for separation, but they don’t go down very much when you press down. Tactile feedback is certainly there, but not much. Leave the keypad tones on and you should be fine.

Display

The Nokia N97 has a 3.5 inch touchscreen at 640×360 resolution. It looks great from an arm’s length. The colors are bright and images appear sharp, but I notice some things up close.

There are grey diagonal lines that are fairly noticeable on white backgrounds. It’s not visible when darker images are shown on display. You really have to put your eyes within inches of the display to notice.

The front of the Nokia N97 is glossy, making the colors on display richer, but it also makes it hard to see the screen on bright sunny days. This is a problem found on many devices with a glossy display, though.

Keylock

I like having dedicated keylocks to prevent accidental keypresses when the device is in my pocket. The Nokia N97 has one, but it doesn’t work 100% of the time.

Before I put it in my pocket, I slide the keylock and the display turns off. Later on when I take it out of my pocket and slide the keylock, I get random results. Sometimes it will unlock and sometimes it won’t, forcing me to slide it again. I hope this is something they fix in a firmware update.

Battery Life

I’m satisfied with the battery life on the Nokia N97. It features a 1500mAH Nokia BP-4L similar to the Nokia E71. From my typical usage, I’d have a full charge at 9AM and one bar by 9pm. If I don’t touch the phone at all, I’m sure it can go on for days.

Removable battery

My typical usage includes replying to push emails via Nokia Messaging, push calendar and contacts via Google Sync, taking photos and tweeting them immediately via Pixelpipe, commenting on friends’ photos via Share Online, comment on my friends’ wall posts on Facebook, checking Twitter for Nokia news via Gravity, some web browsing, and some quick phone calls here and there.

According to the official Nokia specs:

GSM Talk Time up to	9.5 hours

WCDMA Talk Time up to 6.0 hours

GSM Standby Time up to 18 days

WCDMA Standby Time up to 17 days

Video Playback Time up to 4.5 hours

Video Recording Time up to 3.6 hours

Music Playback Time up to 40.0 hours

Charging. You can charge the Nokia N97 via the mini-usb cable connected to a computer or the power adapter. A nice addition I like is the light next to the port. It lights up when the phone is charging and turns off when fully charged.

Internal

I don’t like talking numbers and specs because it’s way over my head. It’s more important for me to use the device and how it performs. The Nokia N97 has a 434MHz CPU and 128MB RAM compared to the iPhone 3GS that features 600MHz CPU and 256MB RAM. You can never have too much RAM or CPU so it would have been beneficial if the N97 had more of both.

Navigating through the menus is snappy. Running apps produce mixed results. For example, The Garvity app is really fast and works pretty good. The web browser is fast, but lags on larger sites like Techmeme. A more accurate demo is available from my first impressions video.

When you have too many apps running in the background, the Nokia N97 decides to close some apps you aren’t currently using to preserve memory. For example, if I open the Gallery, web browser, Gravity, calendar, camera, it might close the gallery and sometimes Gravity without warning.

This can be good or bad. Good: Nokia N97 remains snappy with enough RAM to run your current app. Bad: You have to reopen the application that was closed. I’ll write more about the software and performance closely in an upcoming post.

Storage. The Nokia N97 comes with 32GB of internal storage, but you can add another 16GB microSD card for a total of 48GB. This is great for storing lots of music, photos, and videos.

microSDHC slot on top of the micro-USB port.

Camera

The Nokia N97 has a 5mp camera featuring Carl Zeiss lens and protects it with a cover. People want lens cover and Nokia listened. Sliding the lens cover automatically opens the camera app where you can take photos and videos. This is great for multitasking.

Nokia has been producing quality cameraphones for a while now and the N97 isn’t an exception. The quality is up there, but the Nokia N82 still remains the leader when it comes to night photography.

5 megapixel camera Carl Zeiss lens with cover

Pressing halfway autofocuses on a subject and pressing all the way snaps the pic. The camera button is really good too. I already mentioned in my first impressions that it’s the best camera button compared to my other recent phones.

I’ll have another post where I dig deeper into the camera functions and review the quality of the photos. For now, you can check my uploaded live tweeting photos on Flickr, and see which ones were taken with the Nokia N97.

Mac Users Beware!

Update: NMT was updated to support the Nokia N97. As of writing this post, the Nokia N97 is unsupported by Nokia Multimedia Transfer and Nokia Maps Uploader on Mac. This means I can’t connect the Nokia N97 via “PC suite.” This also means, I have to run Windows on my Mac to use the Maps Uploader. I am forced to use mass storage mode when transferring music, videos, or photos which means I can’t receive phone calls or emails while using it. A positive thing that comes out of this is that the app doubleTwist for the Mac works incredibly on devices using mass storage mode.

Of course, you can skip all this trouble by sending files via bluetooth between the Nokia N97 and computer.

Hardware Wrap-up

To wrap-up the hardware review, I’ll list the important things I mentioned about the Nokia N97.

Positive:
Top-notch build quality. Great keyboard design. High-resolution display. Big storage space. Acceptable battery life. Excellent camera.

Negative:
Need to press two buttons to type a number. Diagonal lines visible on screen with white backgrounds. Keylock randomly needs two slides to unlock the phone. Keyboard buttons provides minimal tactile feedback. No Mac support yet.

The Nokia N97 hardware is so freakin’ sexy, but it’s not currently in its full potential. The negatives I mentioned on this review can be fixed through firmware updates, except the diagonal lines I mentioned. An update is already available inside Nokia hinting a more sensitive touchscreen. Don’t let us wait too long!
Flickr now allows its users to automatically send out a tweet whenever they upload photos through email. If you follow me on Twitter, then you probably notice I prefer to include photos with my tweets. I’ve been doing this with Twitpic on Nokia phones, but I no longer need it thanks to Flickr Twitter beta.

Setup

You’ll need to authorize your account here: www.flickr.com/account/blogs/add/twitter

Click on “Head over to Twitter” then “Allow.”

Note the email address. You can simply send an email over and it will work, but I suggest bringing this info over to Pixelpipe so you can tweet from your Nokia phone using Share Online.

Why Flickr over Twitpic?

If you already use Flickr, you no longer need to use another service like Twitpic to tweet your photos.

Twitpic lets you view a resized photo plus the original size, while Flickr allows 6 size options.

Flickr shows other useful info like the camera used or geotagged locations. Twitpic supports neither.

The BH-703 comes with three earplugs, an ear hook, a neck strap and AC-6U charger. My favorite thing about the BH-703 is that it charges over micro-USB, just like my Nokia N97. The AC-6U charges at a rate of 550maH and takes about an hour to fill up the BH-703 battery. The BH-703 is rated for 6 hours of talk and 160 hours of standby.

Most interestingly, the BH-703 is compatible with the same earplugs I used with my old Sony popular EX-71 headset. I ordered a bag full of compatible ear plugs since I lose them easily. When used with the BH-703, the fit is very good and seals out a lot of noise.

Most striking was the volume quality. I had to turn down the volume on my Nokia N97 to 30% to protect my hearing. Turning it up a notch or two should be perfectly acceptable for driving.

The BH-703 is made of plastic that reminds me of my N82. It has only one button which has multiple functions. It acts as an on/off switch, answers calls and activates voice commands. The face of the BH-703 is touch sensitive. If you swipe towards the mic, the volume goes down. Swipe the other way to raise the volume. Tap it twice and it mutes.

Pairing with the BH-703 is pretty effortless. With most modern Nokia phones, you don’t even need to enter the pairing code. Once paired, it will auto-connect once turned on. Signal quality seems to be fine with my N97 in my right front pocket and the BH-703 in my left ear.

Finishing words

The Nokia BH-703 is a great companion to my Nokia N97. I just wish it came in white.

I think the Nokia E75 looks great in white. The release date is unknown and another reliable source from Nokia commented he doesn’t know if they’ve even decided of releasing it for sure. Would you get a Nokia E75 in white?
Nokia users mingled with other fans as well as Nokia representatives. I was expecting to see the Nokia E72 because it was announced hours before the event, but it was nowhere to be found. Nokia was pushing the E71x and the E75, but I think the highlight was the session where we shared ideas with each other while Nokia folks took notes.

View from the second floor as people started coming in.

Burgers, beer, and wine for everyone.

Q&A with Jerry Hart, Product Marketing Manager in AT&T Product Group. Questions were mostly about the software compromises placed on the Nokia E71x compared to an unlocked Nokia E71. If you want to know the difference between the two devices, Nokia Experts wrote a thorough Nokia E71 vs E71x comparison.

During the ‘blue sky’ thinking session, we were broken up in three groups and presented our ideas based on the questions listed below. This is a photo of Chanse Arrington (North America Multimedia Product Manager), Hugo Hernandez (Director of Eseries Marketing in Americas), and Molly Schonthal (Social Media Communications in North America) listening to blogger Mobile Dan representing his group.

Thanks to WOM World/Nokia for inviting me to this event. As you probably know, I love gadgets especially phones. Meetups like this enable me to let the people behind the brand know what I think about their devices in person. I told the AT&T Product Group Marketing Manager that I didn’t like the Nokia E71x because it didn’t have Share Online built-in. I also had the opportunity to tell the Eseries Director of Marketing I love the email experience on the Nokia E75, but the screen is too small!

Session Questions

It’s flattering that Nokia folks actually read this blog, so I’m sure they’d be interested in your responses to the same questions asked during the session. Let them know what you think!

Which form factor works best for a QWERTY – E71x candybar, or E75 slide or another form factor?

Is there an argument for making all mobile devices QWERTY?

Where are the lines blurring between business, multimedia and consumer focussed devices. Should those lines remain? If not, why not?!

Think about how working practices will change in say 5 years, what do expect to see in the place of these devices? What legacy will live on?

You can also watch this video in HD on the Youtube page.

My problem with the compass is that you have to calibrate it every time you open Nokia Maps. It means doing the weird figure-8 motion whenever you need to use it. It usually takes a while too. On average, it has been taking me 1-2 minutes.

This reminds me of when the GPS was introduced on the Nokia N95. It used to take minutes to lock on my position, but only a few seconds now with the latest devices. I’m sure Nokia will improve on the compass as well.
Wood-Fired Chicken Marsala. chicken breast with mushroom Marsala wine sauce, Tuscan mashed potatoes and pan roasted green beans.

The food was filling but not tasty. I liked the calamari, but everything else was average. I remembered better food the last time were there. Or maybe we had better and more authentic food during our recent trip in Italy that this one did not come close.

The Nokia E75 features a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash. All the photos were taken on automatic mode with the flash firing 4 out of 5 times. The one photo that the Nokia E75’s camera automatically decided not to flash turned out to be the best-looking in my opinion.

If you see that the ambient light is better for your subject, go down to the flash mode, then select off. It’s pretty similar to what you would do on a dedicated camera. I was too hungry to take the photos over again without the flash.

A full review is coming soon after spending more time with the Nokia N97. Here is a brief overview of the video:

The Nokia N97′ UI is responsive.

Widgets are very useful and I like the one for Facebook!

The keyboard will feel weird at first, but it’s not bad.

Web browser needs to load the page before you can scroll, very noticeable on larger sites.

The Nokia N97 has a good camera button, better than Nokia N96, 5800, N85, N82, and comparable to the Nokia N95 8GB.

For Nokia N97 live image samples, follow me on Twitter or check my Flickr as I upload them directly from the phone. I’ll have a Nokia N97 camera review coming up soon.
It’s not a phone I’d consider buying, but I was given the opportunity to trial it from Nokia. I’ll let you know what I think of the physical aspects and continue with upcoming posts of my usage experience and thoughts.

Brief. The Nokia E75 in one sentence can quickly be described as a feature-packed Eseries device with slide-out full keyboard along with a numeric keypad.

Build

Nokia Eseries devices are usually known for its excellent build quality. The Nokia E75 seems to follow suit… until I open the slider. Let me explain.

Full Qwerty keyboard for fast messaging

With the slider closed, the front of the phone is smooth and glossy. It feels good to touch. The stainless steel battery cover is the most striking part on the back of the phone. It goes along very well with the rest of the phone. Without sliding it open, the Nokia E75’s build quality is just what I’d expect in an Eseries device. However, it’s a different story when sliding the Nokia E75 open.

The keyboard and the panel surrounding it are rough to touch, unlike the smooth surface on the front of the Nokia E75. It gives the impression of cheap materials. The outer edge of the phone is also not flushed with the panel, protruding a little bit. If the outer edge was thinner, it it could possibly cut someone. If you were bored, you can try pulling the edge away from the phone. It looks possible!

The outer edge of the Nokia E75 sticks out

The good news is that I found no problems with the slide mechanism. You hear nice clicking sounds when opening and closing the Nokia E75.

Display

The display size is another reason why I wouldn’t buy this phone. The Nokia E75 has a 2.4in screen with 320×240 resolution. With such a small screen, the information and images appear sharp. I prefer a bigger screen.

Buttons

The top two rows of buttons on the Nokia E75 are crammed together resulting in frequent accidental presses. If you had problems with the Nokia E71’s qwerty buttons, you’ll have problems with the top 8 buttons on the Nokia E75’s numeric keypad.

The top row buttons may be bad for people with big thumbs.

The full qwerty keyboard underneath is most likely why potential buyers are interested in this phone. The buttons are big and symbols are easily accessible. I get a pretty good feedback when pressing the buttons, but I wish they weren’t so flat. A little bump on each key would be nicer in my opinion. Nevertheless, I can write emails and text messages on this phone much faster than the Nokia 5800 or the Nokia N85. Another complaint I have is that my thumbs sometimes touch the top-side of the phone whenever I press the R, T, Y, and U buttons. It’s not a big annoyance, but something you might want to look out for.

Side buttons. On the side of the Nokia E75, there are four buttons. Nokia added a dedicated camera button that has been usually omitted in Eseries devices. The other three are volume and voice buttons. If you press and hold the camera buton, the camera application opens up and you’re ready to start shooting. If you press and hold the record button on the main display, voice dialing gets activated and you can say a contact to to dial.

Power. The power button is usually found on top of my previous Nokia Nseries and Eseries phones, but not on the Nokia E75. That function has been aligned with the red or hang-up button on the front of the phone. Whether it is a good or bad idea is up to you.

On my previous phones, I usually press the red button to go back to the main screen from wherever I am. I tend to press it more than once. When that happens on the E75, the power option window appears. It took some time for me to get used to.

One thing I like about power/red button implementation is that I can lock the keypad by pressing the red button, down, then OK. I found it easier than pressing the left soft-key then asterisk. Of course, a dedicated lock button like the one on the Nokia 5800 is the best solution.

Speakers

The loudspeaker on the Nokia E75 is loud enough. I can hear my callers and songs pretty well. The quality isn’t that good if you want to listen to music on loudspeaker. I can hear the lyrics, but also hear crackles on songs with lots of bass (the type of songs I listen to).

Speakers are placed on the back of the Nokia E75

I don’t like the placement of the speakers on the back of the phone. The volume noticeably decreases when you pick it up from the desk.

The Nokia E75 also has a 3.5mm audio jack so you can insert your standard earphones if you don’t like the ones included. I rarely listen to music on the go, and it is not one of my top phone usage. I’m afraid you’ll have to find another reviewer to tell you about the audio quality of the Nokia E75 when using earphones.

Nokia E75 has a 3.5mm audio jack

Connections

There are two rubber flap doors on the left side of the Nokia E75 covering the micro USB and microSD ports. They seem to do a great job locking and staying in place. It should be noted that the E75 does not support TV-out.

Another cool thing about the Nokia E75 is the ability to charge the phone via the micro-USB port or the standard power port.

Hardware Conclusion

The full Qwerty slide-out keyboard enables me to write emails and text messages faster than any previous Nokia phones I’ve played with, including the Nokia E71. I think it looks and feels great when slid closed, but not when the Qwerty keyboard is showing.

The Nokia E75 is clearly not the right phone for me, but it could be for many other people who makes email and messaging a top priority. I feel like it has too many buttons. If I had to pick between the Nokia E71 and Nokia E75 based solely on form factor, I’d choose the E71.

On upcoming posts, I’ll cover some of the features and actual usage experiences from the Nokia E75. I’ll give you a small taste: the 3mp camera is actually good!
A few hours passed by and it has worn off. I still want the Nokia N97! I’m curious how you feel after the announcements. Will you get the iPhone 3GS instead of the Nokia N97?

The features that are more important to me are web browsing, camera, and immediate sharing of photos and/or videos to my friends and social media network. You might have other priorities, but all other features are secondary based on my usage.

My decision in wanting the Nokia N97 over the iPhone 3GS are based on these factors:

Web. Without a doubt, the iPhone’s web browser will be better than the Nokia N97.

Camera. The iPhone does not have camera flash while the Nokia N97 has dual-LEDs flash. I rather have barely-lit images than black images in dark places.

Sharing. I love to Twitpic, Flickr, and Facebook photos wherever I am. I prefer to have an actual keyboard, so I can type photo titles or descriptions quickly and upload from the phone. There is no keyboard on the iPhone. I’m sure there are many people out there that can type fast on a touchscreen, but again, I want to stress that I prefer to have an actual keyboard.

The places we visited in Italy were based on recommendations by our handy Rick Steve’s book. We saw a lot of tourists carrying this book too. We found it very useful and will never go on another vacation without it.

Milan

We landed in Milan and checked out the Cathedral’s rooftop. The view was great, but the combination of hot sunny sky and staircases did not match well. Across the street, the Galleria Vittorio was a walk away.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26558498@N00/3558430793" title="View 'Walking down galleria vittorio.
We didn’t stay long in Milan because we didn’t want to check in at our hotel in Venice late at night. The train ride was about 3 hours, but we were comfortable.

Venice

We stayed in Venice for four nights. I have to say this was my favorite city from the trip. It’s so different from any other places we’ve visited. I loved walking through the alleys and along the canals.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26558498@N00/3561094111" title="View 'Up too early in venice.
Sights. We checked out St. Mark’s Bacilica, Doge’s Palace, and Campanile Tower, which were all within St. Mark’s Square.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26558498@N00/3565956859" title="View 'Not allowed, but snuck a photo at st mark's bacilica.
We also visited Burano island which was 45 minutes from the main Venetian sights. It is known for its brightly-painted houses.

Florence

Also known as Firenze, we stayed in Florence for three nights. There were tourists everywhere and it is a small city.

Sights. We climbed the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, saw Michaelangleo’s La Pieta and David. Photos were not allowed inside, but it’s possible.

Pisa

We visited Pisa from Florence. It was only an hour train ride away. We were lucky the weather was nice.

Orvieto

To get away from a lot of other tourists, we decided to visit a city called Orvieto on the way to Rome. It is on top of a hill with a great view.

Rome

We stayed in Rome for 4 nights. I wanted to see as much of the places shown in the Angels and Demons movie.

Sights. We went to St. Peter’s Square, took a tour of St. Peter’s Basilica, walked through Piazza de Popolo, went inside the Pantheon, looked at Michaelangelo’s paintings at the Sistine Chapel, sat at the Spanish Steps, and awed at the Coliseum.

Internet

I complained about staying connected in Italy because of problems with pre-paid cards. I bought two sim cards. One from Wind and another from TIM, both offering about 2GB of data for 30 days. However, the connection would end within minutes and I would kill my credits to zero even after recharging. I gave up halfway through the trip and just relied on wifi from our hotel. I tried asking for help from a couple of TIM and other mobile shops, but failed because of the language barrier.

Ivan?

Something really interesting I need to ask is who was the guy who said hello to Sheila at Roma Termini station? I stayed near the train with Sheila’s backpack while she went to the booth for tickets. She was in a rush to catch our train, but Sheila said a guy in his 20’s asked her if she was “Mark’s wife” and that he’s seen us online (maybe Twitter or through this blog)? Wish we weren’t late for the train so I could have said hi!

I purchased a TIM prepaid card once I arrived in Milan. I bought it from a friendly staff that spoke English at Central Station. They only needed to see my passport and not a Codice Fiscale that people mentioned. The card by itself was 12 euros. I had to add 20 Euros for a feature called Maxxi Alice Facile, which the staff told me I would be able to use 1GB of internet data for 30 days. They also told me to wait about 30 minutes before using it.

The TIM card worked flawlessly after using it on my Nokia N85. I was snapping photos and quickly uploading them to Twitter, Facebook, and Flickr, using Pixelpipe. I was even surprised of getting 3G speeds while uploading data during the 2 1/2 hour train ride to Venice. Unfortunately, it stopped working a few minutes before arriving in Venice.

I was unable to access the web or upload photos. Since we had a busy itinerary, I was able to visit the only TIM store in Venice during Day 3. I had a difficult time trying to speak Italian, and they had a difficult time trying to speak English.

The person helping me told me that I already used up my voice credit, so I cannot use data anymore. I didn’t believe him because I did not make any voice calls at all. I was told to purchase 5 Euros of credit and wait 15 mins for my data to work again. After 30 mins, no luck.

I went back to the store and told them it didn’t work. The person became frustrated and told me that I already used up the 5 Euros of credit I purchased just 30 minutes ago. I was surprised because I was unable to access the web during that time and how can 5 euros worth of data can get killed in 30 minutes? He told me there is something wrong with the phone settings that is killing my credits. I showed him the APN settings on my Nokia N85 which were correctly set to ibox.tim.it. He then told me that the problem is that the Nokia N85 is not compatible with Europe and that he couldn’t help me. The TIM coverage map also shows Venice as completely covered as well, so it cannot be the phone.

Even after trying to explain to him it worked the first few hours after I activated the card, he told me he couldn’t help me anymore. I called the customer service (119) posted on my card, and was told I cannot be transferred to an English-speaking person for help. They hung up right away when I couldn’t continue the conversation in Italian.

This situation does not ruin the trip. I can still upload my photos when we get back to the hotel using wifi, but I was really hoping to use the service I paid for. We are leaving for Florence tomorrow and will check with another TIM store to find out what’s the problem. If it stays unresolved, I’ll have to purchase another SIM card from another company called WIND and hopefully not face any problems.
Staying connected to the internet will be a top priority along with whatever Sheila planned for us. I’ll be bringing the Nokia N85 as my mobile phone and research tells me to get a Wind pre-paid SIM card for data. Boingo will come in handy too.

Pre-paid SIM

I’ve searched for sites that recommend pre-paid SIM cards and I think I found the right place. Prepaid GSM lists the available service providers in each country/region along with their rates. The forums are filled with helpful members as well. I found that I can get a prepaid Wind SIM with 2.6GB of data for 10 Euros. My only concern is that some people mentioned 3G coverage isn’t as good as another provider called TIM. Since we’re staying in major cities, I’m not that worried.

Boingo WiFi

I’ll also have Boingo so I can have access to hotspots with my phone and laptop. If you haven’t heard of the service yet, I suggest signing up for their free 30-day trial available to Nokia users. If wifi is not accessible from my laptop, Joikuspot will allow me to share my Nokia N85’s internet connection.

Twitpic, Facebook, Flickr

If you want to check out the latest photos from the trip, I’ll be uploading photos directly from the phone straight to the web using the built-in Nokia Share-Online app. This wouldn’t be possible without the awesome service, Pixelpipe! Follow me on Twitter or check out my Flickr.

Tips?

The wife pretty much handled the itinerary, so I’m glad I didn’t have to worry about that. I’ve skimmed through some travel books so I’m not completely clueless. Let us know if you have recommendations, tips, and advice for the trip!
Whatever I edit or add on my phone’s calendar or contacts automatically show up within minutes in my computer. This works from computer to phone as well. Since the data is stored by Google, it is also accessible from any computer I use with internet connection. The best thing about this is I don’t need to manually sync each time I make any changes. Thanks Google!

Setup

Setting up Google Sync requires installing Mail for Exchange on your Nokia handset. Visit m.google.com/sync from your desktop and follow the instructions.

Google Contacts

Not perfect

I’m really glad that this is finally supported on Nokia phones, but it’s not perfect. My all-day entries show up as 12AM-12AM appointments on the phone. Other users also want multiple calendar support that is not currently available.

Have you set up push calendar and contacts on your phone yet?

Here’s an overview of Lester Chan’s Nokia N97 hands-on preview:

Felt solid when I got my hands on it.

There are a lot of interesting applications/widgets that you can place on the home screen such as Facebook, Stocks, Weather, etc.

Scrolling or “flickering” is not as smooth as iPhone.

Felt that it is more responsive than the iPhone.

Typing on the mini QWERTY keyboard is quite smooth.
