Torley: [TOOL] Make 8-bit video game sounds with cfxr/sfxr

One of the first profound gaming experiences I had, not just as a player but a creator, came through the Commodore 64's Shoot'Em Up Construction Kit. I never had the patience to complete an entire game, but dabbled with the pixel editor — ah, the glory of having 4 colors per sprite, eh?

On the audio side, there was a rather easy-to-use module that let you make all the familiar noises, from white noise whoosh explosions to sawtooth "You're gonna die!" warnings. Some years ago, I managed to relive this through an emulator and record the sound stream for sampling.

leer más

Torley: [TIP] Stop JavaScript from resizing windows in Firefox

I've a love-hate relationship with useful features I find out about too late: I only discovered recently you can selectively disable certain JavaScript functions within Firefox without having to install an add-on. For instance, if you find pages that move/resize windows annoying (I do, as I use multiple tabs within a single window), you can turn them off. Here's how:

leer más

After reviewing Acoustic Refractions, I was asked by some of you to review the only other Kore SoundPack I have for now, Urban Arsenal 2.

I'm fond of those NPR announcers who apparently sit close to the mic and speak in really soothing tones. The other night, I felt relaxed and did sort of the same thing while playing piano. There isn't a "point" to it, it's 18.5-odd ("odd" being the operative word) minutes of me sharing my internal creative processes to the tune of mellow musical stylings.
Torley: [MUSIC] Tangerine Dream "Love on a Real Train" piano variations

The purest thing about an obsession is that it keeps your memories of what you love alive; you absolutely don't forget. I was humming Tangerine Dream's "Love on a Real Train" (as featured in Risky Business) so much (mostly because I can't whistle) that I decided to improvise some piano variations around it. It turned out beautifully, and you can listen to and download it below, and watch a video which shows — like a 21st-century player piano — which notes I'm banging away at.

leer más

Torley: [MUSIC] Piano sheet music for "Xristospiano" by Thattagen

A most gracious THANXARAMA! to frequent commenter Thattagen aka Gabriel Myers for the following SHEET MUSIC to my piano piece, "Xristospiano":

Download audio file (Torley_Wong-xristospiano.mp3)

As he expressed:

11 pages later, the notes look so simple, yet the song sounds so complex! I'm still mesmerized at how you did all of it off the top of your head.

Tran-social-media-play [tran-soc-shuh-mee-dee-uh-pley] noun, verb

1 noun - a new form, a means of collaborative communication through play in constructed shared ‘media-rich’ environments

Can we truly create meaningful immersive media ‘experiences’ for others? Ones that last, are memorable, have impact [...]

The Future of Virtual Worlds is the theme for Second Life's 6th Birthday Celebration this year, (June 23, 2009) and hundreds of Residents have applied for space to exhibit there. I've been watching the applications roll in, and there are a lot of awfully interesting ideas popping up, as well as a number of laugh-out-loud funny proposals that I can't wait to see realized.
leer más

Languagelabs SL school: How Second Life has changed Vocabulary

I was working away on my island in Second Life and doing my best to make it easy for visitors to find their way round without getting lost. To do this I went to every location and ‘installed’ teleporter pads. If you are from my generation you’ll remember the old Star Trek episodes on the television, where Captain Kirk said ‘Beam me up, Scottie.’ Those beams looked and sounded like my teleporter.

leer más
