Here are the best.

Viz is a popular British adult comic magazine that has been running since 1979.

The comic’s style parodies the strait-laced British comics of the post-war period, notably The Beano and The Dandy, but with incongruous language, crude toilet humour, black comedy and either sexual or violent story lines. It also sends up tabloid newspapers, with mockeries of articles and letters pages. It features competitions and advertisements for overpriced ‘limited edition’ tat, such as a cat that “shits its own weight in gold”, as well as obsessions with half-forgotten celebrities from the 1970s and 1980s such as Shakin’ Stevens and Rodney Bewes. Occasionally it satirises current events and politicians, but has no particular political standpoint. Its success has led to the appearance of numerous rivals crudely copying the format Viz pioneered; none of them has managed seriously to challenge its popularity.

Top Tips

A long-running segment has been the Top Tips, reader-submitted suggestions which are a parody of similar sections found in women’s magazines that offer domestic and everyday tips to make life easier. In Viz, naturally, they are usually absurd, impractical or ludicrous - for example: “A small coniferous tree in the corner of your living room is an excellent place to store Christmas decorations“, or “Why waste money on expensive binoculars? Simply stand closer to the object you wish to observe”. Some tips are for ridiculous motives, such as how to convince neighbours that your house has dry rot, whilst others are for possibly sensible motives but with ridiculous and impractical suggestions of how to go about it, such as “convince friends that you have a high powered job in the City by leaving for work at 6 am every morning, arriving home at 10 at night, never keeping social appointments and dropping down dead at the age of 36.” and “Save money on sex-lines by phoning up the Samaritans and threatening to kill yourself unless they talk dirty.” Some are totally inexplicable: “To make your husband’s trousers heavier, hang onions from the belt loops”. Some inspire volleys of running jokes: “Fun-sized Mars Bars make ideal normal sized Mars Bars for dwarves.” — “Normal-sized Mars bars make ideal fun-sized Mars Bars for giants.” — “King-size Mars Bars make ideal normal size Mars Bars for giants.” — “Normal-sized Mars Bars make ideal king-sized Mars Bars for dwarves.”

A more recent trend is for extremely sarcastic tips to be offered that are observations by the readers regarding other people’s behaviour, such as someone (obviously a barmaid) who suggested male pub customers who are “trying to get into a barmaid’s knickers” should “pull back your tenner just as she reaches to take it when paying for a round. It really turns us on.”

Here are the best of the tips:

Climb onto your neighbour’s roof and dangle a fish on a bit of string in front of his windows. He’ll think his house is underwater.

Buy a television set exactly like your neighbours. Then annoy them by standing outside their window and changing their channel using your identical remote control.

MOTORISTS. Pressing your ‘fog lights’ switch a second time after the fog has cleared will actually turn your fog lights off.

Cheer loudly at 8.00pm each Saturday to fool the neighbours into thinking you have won the Lottery.

Girls. Next time you feel like throwing a ball over-arm, don’t, because you can’t and it just looks silly. Just throw it girlie under-arm style, and no-one will laugh at you, or get hurt.

X-Files fans. Create the effect of being abducted by aliens by drinking two bottles of vodka. You’ll invariably wake up in a strange place the following morning, having had your memory mysteriously ‘erased’.

Minor skin grafts can be performed on pigs by covering any cuts and grazes with thin strips of bacon.

Save money on expensive personalised car number plates by simply changing your name to match your existing plate. - Mr. KVL 741Y,

Don’t waste money buying expensive binoculars. Simply stand closer to the object you wish to view.

Avoid jet lag by simply taking an earlier flight, thus arriving fully refreshed and on time.

Pass yourself off as Welsh by putting coal dust behind your fingernails and talking gibberish all the time, stopping occasionally to sing loudly, or set fire to someone else’s house.

Putting just the right amount of gin in your goldfish bowl makes the fishes’ eyes bulge and cause them to swim in an amusing manner.

Save time when crossing a one-way street by only looking in the direction of oncoming traffic. - D. Rogers, Hemel Hempstead

When crossing a one-way street always look in BOTH directions in case a large blue furniture removal lorry is reversing the wrong way up the road. - D. Rogers, Hemel Hempstead General Infirmary

Thicken up runny low-fat yoghurt by stirring in a spoonful of lard.

Anorexics. When your knees become fatter than your legs, start eating cakes again.

A next door neighbour’s car aerial, carefully folded, makes an ideal coat hanger in an emergency.

Hijackers. Avoid a long stressful siege and the risk of arrest, imprisonment or death by simply making sure you book a flight to your intended destination in the first place.

Deter goldfish from having sex by throwing a small bucket of air over any that you catch in the act.

Olympic athletes. Disguise the fact that you’ve taken anabolic steroids by running a bit slower. - B. Johnson, Canada

Sweetcorn fans. Save money on loo paper by simply pouring the stuff straight down the pan.

Pretend you`re a giant panda by giving yourself two black eyes, eating only bamboo shoots and refusing to have sex with the missus.

Smokers. Save on matches and lighters, by simply lighting your next fag from the butt of your last one.

Vegetarians coming to dinner? Simply serve them a nice bit of steak or veal. Since they`re always going on about how tofu, Quorn, meat substitute etc `tastes exactly like the real thing`, they won`t know any difference.

Invited by vegetarians for dinner? Point out that since you`d no doubt be made aware of their special dietary requirements, tell them about yours, and ask for a nice steak.

FOOL other drivers into thinking you have an expensive car phone by holding an old TV or video remote control up to your ear and occasionally swerving across the road and mounting the kerb.

DRILL a one inch diameter hole in your refrigerator door. This will allow you to check that the light goes off when the door is closed.

BOMB disposal experts’ wives. Keep hubby on his toes by packing his lunchbox with plasticine and an old alarm clock.

SAVE electricity by turning off all the lights in your house and walking around wearing a miner’s hat.

AVOID parking tickets by leaving your windscreen wipers turned to ‘fast wipe’ whenever you leave your car parked illegally.

HOUSEWIVES. I find the best way to get two bottles of washing-up liquid for the price of one is by putting one in your shopping trolley and the other in your coat pocket.

DON’T INVITE DRUG ADDICTS round for a meal on boxing day. They may find the offer of cold turkey embarrassing or offensive.

OLD telephone directories make ideal personal address books. Simply cross out the names and address of people you don’t know.

WHEN reading a book try tearing out the pages as you read them. This saves the expense of buying a bookmark, and the pages can later be used for shopping lists.

A TEASPOON placed in a glass on the back seat of your car makes a handy audible gauge for road bump severity.

BUS DRIVERS. Pretend you’re an airline pilot by wedging your accelerator pedal down with a heavy book, securing the steering wheel with some old rope, and then strolling back along the bus chatting casually to the passengers.

SAVE petrol by pushing your car to your destination. Invariably passers-by will think you’ve broken down and help.

LOSE weight quickly by eating raw pork or rancid tuna. I found that the subsequent food poisoning/diarrhea enabled me to lose 12 pounds in only 2 days.

WHEN throwing someone a sharp instrument such as a Stanley knife, or bread knife, always throw it blade first as they invariably tend to turn whilst in the air.

AVOID being wheel-clamped by jacking your car up, removing the wheels and locking them safely in the boot until you return.

SMELL gas? Locate the suspected leak by striking an ordinary match in every room in the house until a loud explosion reveals the source of the escaping gas.

TAXI drivers. Why not pop into the garage and ask them to fix your indicators lights for you so that other motorists know where the heck you’re going.

PENSIONERS. Try sitting on a pile of encyclopedias next time you go for a drive in your car. That way you will be able to see out of the front window.

TAKE your dustbin to the supermarket with you so that you can see which items you have recently run out of.

MAKE shopkeepers feel like criminals and con men by carefully checking their change and holding bank notes up to the light before accepting them.

SAVE on charity donations by spending a pound on clothes at a charity shop, then selling them for 50p to another charity shop. This way you can give twice as much, at half the cost. I think.

NO TIME for a bath? Wrap yourself in masking tape and remove the dirt by simply peeling it off.

EXPENSIVE hair gels are a con. Marmalade is a much cheaper alternative, but beware of bees in the summer.

PUTTING just the right amount of gin in your goldfish bowl makes the fishes’ eyes bulge and causes them to swim in an amusing manner.

Dyslexics. Try deliberately spelling words wrongly. This way at least you have a chance of spelling them correctly.

Bearded men can obtain the appearance of an upper class Arctic explorer by simply applying Tippex to their beards, painting their noses blue, and cutting off a couple of toes. It never fails to impress the girls.

If a small child is choking on an ice cube, don’t panic. Simply pour a jug of boiling water down its throat and hey presto! The blockage is almost instantly removed.

Avoid cutting yourself while clumsily slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold them while you chop away.

Housewives: When nipping out to the shops, remember to carry a stiff broom in the boot of your car. Use it to sweep the broken glass to the side of the road every time you have a minor accident.

Recreate the fun of a visit to a public swimming pool in your own home by filling the bath with cold water, adding two bottles of bleach, then urinating into it, before jumping in.

Bus drivers. Pretend you’re an airline pilot by wedging your accelerator pedal down with a heavy book, securing the steering wheel with some old rope, and then strolling back along the bus chatting casually to the passengers.

International master criminals. Tell your guards to shoot James Bond in the head at the first opportunity. Under no circumstances give him a guided tour of your base, or leave him in the custody of attractive women in bikinis.

KING-sized Mars bars make ideal normal-sized Mars bars, for giants. NORMAL-sized Mars bars make ideal king-sized Mars bars for dwarfs, as well as fun-sized ones for giants. FUN-sized Mars Bars make ideal normal sized Mars Bars for midgets.

PEOPLE whose surname is Toblerone should always take along an empty ‘Toblerone’ chocolate box when attending interviews for office jobs. This would save your potential employer the expense of having to make a name plaque for your desk, and therefore increase your chances of getting the job.

In May of 2002, the World Health Organization announced a rise in obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Remarkably, this occurred not only in affluent developed nations - but also among developing nations in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, where malnutrition was once the major dietary issue.

Why is this happening?

Obesity in the developing world can be seen as a result of a series of changes in diet, physical activity, health and nutrition, collectively known as the ‘nutrition transition.’ As poor countries become more prosperous, they acquire some of the benefits along with some of the problems of industrialized nations. These include obesity.

Since urban areas are much further along in the transition than rural ones, they experience higher rates of obesity. Cities offer a greater range of food choices, generally at lower prices. Urban work often demands less physical exertion than rural work. And as more and more women work away from home, they may be too busy to shop for, prepare and cook healthy meals at home. The fact that more people are moving to the city compounds the problem. In 1900, just 10 percent of the world population inhabited cities. Today, that figure is nearly 50 percent.

That is not to say that rural areas are immune. Increased mechanization of farm activity leads to reduced physical activity at the same time that more food — but not necessarily a better variety of foods — becomes available. Many rural farmers have given up subsistence farming of multiple crops that provide a more balanced diet in favour of a single, high-yielding cash crop.

Importing poor eating habits

Another element of the nutrition transition is the increasing importation of foods from the industrialized world. As a result, traditional diets featuring grains and vegetables are giving way to meals high in fat and sugar.

Some critics blame industrialized countries for producing leaner cuts of meat for their own citizens but selling the high-fat remainders elsewhere. Turkey tails and mutton flaps (cuts of skin, fat and little meat) are sold to the developing world, for instance, despite the fact that 80 percent of the energy in these items come from fat.

And as food companies watch incomes rise in the developing world, they are setting their sights on new markets. From Mexico to Morocco, the same foods that jeopardize health in wealthy countries are now tempting poor ones.

Other dietary changes are taking place regardless of outside influences. In China, when per capita income grew fourfold after the economic reforms of the late 1970s, the consumption of high-fat foods soared. And while incomes grew, the income needed to purchase a fatty diet decreased. In 1962, a diet containing 20 percent of total energy from fat correlated with a per capita GNP of US$1 475. By 1990, a GNP of just $750 correlated with the same diet.

In a number of countries, globalization has changed the face of obesity. In Mexico and Brazil, for example, where overweight used to be a sign of wealth, it now often marks poverty. The increased availability of foods at lower prices mean the poor have access to a richer diet. While the elite can choose to adopt a healthy lifestyle, the poor have fewer food choices and more limited access to nutrition education.

The cost of a poor diet

The underweight and overweight share high levels of sickness and disability, shortened life spans and reduced productivity. Obesity increases the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, gall bladder disease and a number of cancers.

And the developing world risks suffering the lion’s share of the growing disease burden. For instance, the number of people with obesity-related diabetes is expected to double to 300 million between 1998 and 2025 — with three-quarters of that growth projected in the developing world.

For nations whose economic and social resources are already stretched to the limit, the result could be disastrous.

Take Action

Support local farmers and promote the consumption of local foods.

Support regulations to prevent the marketing of unhealthy food, particularly to children.

Discourage consumption of categories of foods known to contribute to poor diet and obesity, beginning where the science is strongest - soft drinks.

Protect opportunities and incentives for physical activity

Facilitate healthier travel (e.g. walking and cycling to work or school)

The importance of making physical activity a part of our daily routine cannot be overemphasised. Countries such as Denmark, where there are a greater number of cycling lanes, have a lower prevalence of obesity than the UK. A 14-year study conducted in Denmark also found that those who cycled daily (at least 3 hours per week) had a 40% lower mortality rate than those who took a sedentary route to work.

Limit energy intake from total fats and shift fat consumption away from saturated fats to unsaturated fats

Increase consumption of fruit and vegetables, as well as legumes, whole grains and nuts;

Limit the intake of sugars

Here’s how:

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

* Gary Player (who practices a lot)

1. Know your goals

You invite the opportunities that will help you realise your ambitions only if you are clear on your aims in the first place.

2. Be flexible

Adopt a relaxed and open-minded approach in your thoughts and actions. Break habits by changing your route to work, going to lunch with different people, and watching different kinds of film. Experimentation opens up new horizons and mental pathways.

3. Assume responsibility

Fortune doesn’t favour a victim. Take ownership of what happens to you and how you respond to it.

4. Take risks

Remember the saying ‘A ship in harbour is safe, but that’s not what ships were built for’. Think of yourself when you’re older - won’t you regret the risks you didn’t take?

5. Expect good fortune

Luck operates like a self-fulfilling prophecy. If your glass is half-full in the first place, it’s more likely that things will come along to top it up.

6. Turn bad luck to good

Luck is all about how you view the chance events in your life. If something bad happens, suspend your reaction. Try viewing it as a good thing and see where it leads.

7. Trust your intuition

Your inner voice often knows best. When Sir Ronald Cohen’s Apax partners faced early trouble, he trusted his own hunch over the figures he was given. And he was duly rewarded for his good judgment.

8. Network

That person on the far side of the room may be a surprisingly good fit to assist in your next project. But you have to speak to them first to find out. Network like you mean it, too. People will pick up on your genuine interest, and opportunities will come more freely.

9. Keep your eyes open

You may not have found the thing you were looking for, but is there something even more important happening right in front of your eyes?

10. Say ‘yes’ more often

You never know where it may lead.

What are the most common mistakes that bloggers make:
1. Usless posts. You want useful posts — that’s why you’re there. And when you go to a blog and scan the front page and can’t find one single useful post, you’re outta there. Bloggers should have lots of posts packed with useful information, and they should [...]

What are the most common mistakes that bloggers make:

1. Usless posts. You want useful posts — that’s why you’re there. And when you go to a blog and scan the front page and can’t find one single useful post, you’re outta there. Bloggers should have lots of posts packed with useful information, and they should be on the front page so the reader doesn’t have to look for them.

2. Infrequent posting. A good blog will have posts at least once a week. Two or three times a week is probably better, and 4-5 times a week might be best .

3. Writing about infrequent posting. What’s worse than noticing that the last post was two months ago? Reading the first paragraph of the post and seeing something like, “Sorry I haven’t been posting lately — things have been really busy for me. I promise to post more frequently!” Lame.

4. Not displaying your best posts. Going through months of archives is too difficult for a new reader. The new reader wants to find your most essential posts right away, on the front page. A list of 10-20 essential posts for new readers is a must. Seriously, a must. Don’t make it difficult for readers to find your good stuff.

5. Flashy or annoying ads. If an ad is flashing, or popping up, or making noises, or expanding to block the text of the post, or in some other way forces the reader to click “close” … that’s just annoying.

6. Trying to push products too often. I’m talking about pushing products within the posts themselves, all the time. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with that from time to time. But in every post?

7. Long posts that are hard to scan. You shouldn’t have to read every word of every paragraph to find the tips you want — they should be listed in bullet points or a numbered list, or highlighted in bold or somehow brought to the attention to the reader. Make it easy, not hard, to find the info the reader wants!

8. Pop-up subscription boxes. As a reader, when I go to a blog like this, I click “close” or “no thanks” when the pop-up subscription box appears, and then I leave the site, never to come back. It’s too annoying, and too pushy. Don’t force the subscription on the reader. Let them review your site first, and then decide for themselves if they want to subscribe.

9. Way too much clutter on your site. The reader really wants to focus on the post, and while he’s willing to put up with some ads and other elements, if there’s too much it makes it hard to read. And that’s gonna lose you readers.

10. Boring or uninformative headlines. Again, a new reader wants to be able to find your useful posts very quickly. Often that means that he’ll scan through the front page, looking only at the headlines. Get that information and benefit in the headline, not just buried somewhere within the post. Or else you’ll lose that reader.

I don’t know if you’ve ever tried eating a one-slice sandwich.
Yeah, one slice.
Put one slice down. Then pile the slice with chicken, mayonnaise,
pickles, tomatoes, lettuce and sauces.
Now eat the slice of bread, will ya?

By Sean DSouza of Psychotactics

I don’t know if you’ve ever tried eating a one-slice sandwich.

Yeah, one slice.

Put one slice down. Then pile the slice with chicken, mayonnaise,
pickles, tomatoes, lettuce and sauces.

Now eat the slice of bread, will ya?
Ummm…I’d rather not, you say

Because even a dumbo knows that a one-slice sandwich is a recipe for disaster. The chicken pieces will drop; mayonnaise will ooze; pickles will pop and your clothes will be a sea of green lettuce.

Come to think of it, there’s no such thing as a one-slice sandwich!

There’s no such thing as a one-slice article either!

Your first fifty words of your article are the top slice.
The last fifty words are your bottom slice.

Ever noticed the difference between slices of bread?

There is no difference. They look the same. They’re the same colour, the same tone. In any normal sandwich, two slices of bread are mirror images of each other. And the sandwiching effect is what keeps the stuffing together.

Why on earth would you bother with sandwiching?

In one word: Closure.

Every showbiz person cringes at the curse of a bad ending. They know fully well, that a great presentation would crumble like a week-old cookie, if the ending wasn’t dramatic enough.
You don’t have, or need, the whiz-bang of show-biz

You don’t need the 70 piece orchestra. You can create a great crescendo by simply sandwiching your article.
Tah, dah…Live examples of sandwiching in action

The first example/article below starts with Sarah and her testimonial. It starts with the problem of Sarah not being around to give a live testimonial. The article ends with Sarah and her testimonial.

The second article starts with the Olympics and deadlines. The article ends with Olympics and deadlines. And it gives you the solution, by recommending external deadlines. Read the articles below to see exactly how the opening and closing paragraphs are mirrors of each other.

Example No.1:

Opening paragraphs:
You’re at a live speaking event and you sure miss Sarah.

You see at your last event Sarah stood up and told the audience how wonderful you were. She told the audience how reluctant she was before buying your consulting services, and investing in your product. Then Sarah revealed her trump card. As a result of working with you, she now earns over $50,000 more than she did last year. She told the audience how much more confidence she has. How clients are flocking to her like they’ve never done before. How she took her first vacation in years.

And darn, Sarah’s not around at this event. And no one’s around to take Sarah’s place. Darn, darn, darn.

Closing Paragraphs:
A written testimonial doesn’t allow for description of a customer. If you described a customer, you could at best talk about their occupation/post and designation. You could have a photo. Any other description would seem like overkill. In a real life situation, you have no such restrictions. You can paint a powerful picture by simply describing the customer in great detail. And then it will seem like Sarah’s around — At every event!

Example No.2:

Opening Paragraph:
Ever seen an Olympics opening ceremony postponed because they needed to push the deadline just a little further? Have you ever seen an Olympics abandoned because some one was ill or feeling lazy? So how come your tiny marketing project runs into so much trouble, time after time?I call it the curse of internal marketing deadlines.

Closing Paragraph:
Get yourself a whole bunch of external deadlines
Take the client’s money in advance. Then see how your you-know-what will be on fire. Your Olympics will loom up and you’ll have no choice but to deliver.Internal deadlines are a curse. Go for external deadlines. They give you focus.

The Psychology Behind Sandwiching

The biggest reason your customer started reading the article, is because they snuggled up to your first fifty words. When you use ’sandwiching’ in your copywriting, you close with the same thought that attracted your customer in the first place.

You didn’t have to create a whole lot of whiz-bang to end on a crescendo. All you had to do was mirror your ending paragraphs with the opening paragraphs. And yipee-yahooey, you have a powerful closure.

Ahem, remember one more thing

You noticed that the articles started with a problem, and ended with a solution, didn’t you? Starting with the problem gets your customer’s attention, and closing with the solution, creates a parallel form of closure. In all your copy, look to create drama when opening your copy and create closure when closing your copy.

Don’t let the draught in.. .

The ending of your copy needs closure. Don’t leave the door on your article open.

Stop for a second, and look at the article you’re writing today

Do the opening and ending paragraphs nicely hold the contents of your article/copy together? Does your article have a top and bottom slice?

Or are you still taking a gamble on a one-slice sandwich?

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Alex Fayle of the Someday Syndrome blog.

Someday Syndrome: not doing what you want to because you don’t know what it is, because you’re procrastinating about it, or because you have too much stuff getting in your way.

Everyone suffers from Someday Syndrome at some point in their lives, often catching it repeatedly. For me, most recently, I’d been saying that I really should give running a try without doing anything about it.

You probably have something similar going on in your life – a project, a task, a goal - that you just haven’t got around to doing yet. Right?

I could quote Nike and say: Just Do It, but if it were that simple Someday Syndrome wouldn’t exist. In my own case, it wasn’t until my body rebelled and refused to sleep from lack of exercise that I finally got started.

I decided that here had to be an easier way than waiting for pain to push me into getting over myself and getting on with my goals. So I came up with this: 11 ways to cure Someday Syndrome so that others don’t need to suffer through a cure.

1. Be you. This is The Happiness Project’s number one Happiness Commandment. I hate team sports, so there’s no way I’d play football (soccer). Running allows me to exercise when I want and I can do it on my own or with a friend. Perfectly me.

Maybe you’re not doing something because in reality, it doesn’t fit with who you are. If so, dump the idea and the expectations that likely came along with it, and go find something that suits you better.

2. Clear out the junk. If you don’t know what would suit you better, it could be because your mind and emotions are all cluttered up. I mean, seriously, if your mind’s in chaos, how could you possibly make a clear decision on getting rid of your somedays? The clutter I’m talking about includes the negative thoughts (like me thinking that I’d never be able to run more than 30 seconds without dying), or negative attitudes (I’m too lazy to run).

There are some great tools available in the Simplicity category of ZenHabits. Use them.

3. Know what you want. And why you want it. If you are going cure Someday Syndrome, you’ll need to know details about that desire and the reasons behind it.

And if you don’t know what that is, the blogosphere is full of blogs ready to help you figure out your dreams - Someday Syndrome and ZenHabits are two examples, but you can find others on the PluginID website on Glen’s Personal Development page.

4. Make a grand plan. I say “grand” because this is the big picture plan. Don’t get carried away. Planning can feel like action, but really it’s no different than talking. Until you actually do something, you’re still procrastinating.

I have a goal of running 20K next November. That’s enough for now. Starting is more important than getting into detailed plans.

5. Take one step at a time. The only details you need to choose at this point is first steps. I get overwhelmed by details. When I look past the big picture I don’t just see a few details – I see all of them, therefore I focus on just the next two or three things that I’m going to do.

I know what I need to do to get started (the first two months of training). That’s enough.

6. Ignore the rest. That’s right. Ignore everything else in the goal except what you’re working on. We often use comparisons of where we are now to where we want to be as a form of procrastination. While checking in is always a good thing, we can do it when each small task is completed, and not in the middle of a task.

On my running days, when I’m in the middle of my current workout, I don’t think about what’s coming up next week. Why would I want to freak myself out?

7. Get help. Daniel Gilbert in his book Stumbling on Happiness, says that the best route to figuring out if our goals will actually make us happy is to talk to others who have done it.

I also try to be lazy when I can be, so if someone else has done the work (like this Couch-to-5K Running Plan), then there’s no need to waste my time coming up with something new, now is there?

8. Don’t compare. Be careful when you get help, because the dream-shattering tendency to compare lurks nearby. Leo talks about the bad side to comparisons in his post: Life’s Enough. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others.

Enough said. (Yes, I’m taking my own advice about Getting Help and moving on.)

9. Be uncomfortable. Judith Sills in her book The Comfort Trap, or What If You’re Riding a Dead Horse? talks about how we might be terribly unhappy, but we’re comfortable so we don’t do anything about the unhappiness. Happiness is a risk, but the current situation even if it’s painful is safe.

Which would you prefer? Comfortably in pain and unhappy or uncomfortably blissful? I live my life the second way and would recommend that you always choose the uncomfortable option.

10. Celebrate the process as well as the end. I don’t mean celebrations like Dash’s Grade 3 “graduation ceremony” from The Incredibles. I mean acknowledge your progress. I Tweet my runs and mention them on my Facebook status. I also talk with other runners and we talk progress and tips.

And in turn this sharing inspires others and helps them move past their own Somedays and toward achieving their goals.

11. Don’t stop at the easy point. Wait a second. Most lists are only ten points. Why does this one have eleven?

Because it’s important to push yourself just a little bit further than you think you can go. Although my big goal is running 20K within a year, I’ve committed to running 7K on December 31st.

So, while you’re celebrating and taking it one step at a time, come up with one unexpected action you can take that’ll add energy, excitement and a bit of fear to your goal.

Believe me, that bit of fear will probably be the best motivator you’ve ever found.
