Residential Search and Rescue for the Street Firefighter

Course description:
This class presumes that the art of performing searches and making true rescues during a residential fire scenario is fast becoming a dying art in the fire service; not through any deliberate act on the part of responding firefighters but rather through the act of omission due to manpower constraints (which effects both career and volunteer firefighters alike) and a lack of useable and practical techniques. The class seeks to arm firefighters with practical, useable tools and techniques for conducting searches and performing rescues as well as a thorough understanding of assessing the potential for making rescues in a real world setting. Furthermore, the students will learn how to properly identify and categorize their actions based on a given set of circumstances as well as how to effectively communicate this information to incoming companies. The class will introduce new terminology, new and current search and rescue techniques and review statistical data to support theories and evaluate photographs of real incidents. All information presented during the class is compliant with the current governing standards within the fire service. Students will be better prepared to fulfill the most vital mission of a firefighter as well as being able to communicate the techniques and information to those within their own departments.

Instructor
Michael Bricault is a firefighter for the City of Albuquerque Fire Department serving since 1993. He is a nationally certified fire service instructor and a frequent speaker on a variety of fire service topics relating to search and rescue during residential fires. He is a contributing author to a variety of fire service
publications including Fire Engineering Magazine, Firehouse Magazine, Fire International Magazine, Fire Chief Magazine and is an FDIC presenter. Bricault has also written a firefighter’s training manual on
the subject of Residential Search and Rescue as well as department s.o.p.’s.

He has served as a instructor at NFA for over 20 years.

The Fire Officer I course is a delivery in partnership with Haywood Community College and the North Carolina Department of Insurance, Office of the State Fire Marshal. The eight week course is designed to meet the requirements of NFPA 1021 for the Fire Officer I level.
