LG Display to buy OLED materials from Idemitsu Kosan

LG Display says they have signed an agreement with Japan's Idemitsu Kosan for OLED materials. LG sees OLEDs growing rapidly, and they want a stable soruce for materials.

Idemitsu Kosan are also working with Sony and UDC on OLED display materials.

LG display plans to start making larger panels towards the end of 2009, and to sell OLED TVs in December 2009 or January 2010 in Korea. They expect the market to reach over 3B$ in 2010 (citing DisplaySearch numbers).

The Sony OLED walkman is now shipping in the US, through Amazon, and at a lower price than published before: the 32GB version is available for 367$ (sold through digital-audio USA, who are importing them from the UK. Amazon's own walkmans will be released on the 3rd of July).

Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 rumored to have a 3.5" OLED

It seems that Sony Ericsson are planning to update their Xperia phone, with the X2 'vulcan'... Some photos and details have leaked :

3.5" WVGA touchscreen OLED display

Windows Mobile 6.5

This is not confirmed yet... but if true it will be the 2nd larger OLED in a phone (the largest is the 3.7" used by Samsung's i8910).

UPDATE: Indeed you can now buy the OLED walkman, in the UK at least!

The Sony OLED walkman gets a UK release date - May 24th, and will cost 230 pounds for the 32GB. There's no word yet on the US release date, but they say it will be mid-June.

The Sony X walkman is now listed in Amazon: 399$ for 32GB, 299$ for 16GB

The Sony X-series OLED walkman finally arrives in the US. It is now listed in Amazon.com, and also got a price: 399$ for 32GB, 299$ for 16GB. There's no word yet when it'll be released.

Sony has been talking to TechRadar, and saying that they are completely committed to OLEDs. They see OLEDs as the next display technology.

Sony 21-inch OLED prototype

Sony however thinks that it'll take a few years (at least) for OLEDs TVs to surpass LCD TVs. Sony want to 'slowly cultivate' their OLED technology - they plan to deliver 'new lifestyle ideas and applications' using OLEDs.

Sony are rumored to be releasing their next-generation OLED TV (The XEL-2?) at IFA 2009. It will be bigger than the XEL-1, at 21" or 27".

Engadget reviews the new Sony OLED Walkman. Here's what they say on the OLED display (3" Touchscreen 432x240):

"[The OLED is] nothing short of awe-inspiring. The first time we spotted the home screen, we couldn't help but be taken aback -- colors were dramatic, crisp and downright lovely. It really shines when viewing album art, photos and video..."

The 16GB version costs 400$ in Japan, and Engadget doesn't think the OLED display is worth the price:

"So yeah, the OLED panel itself definitely lives up to the hype, but unfortunately we're not so sure a fancy display justifies the steep increase in price versus LCD-based rivals."

There was a blog post last week at HCC that claimed that Sony are giving up on OLED TVs. According to the blog post, DisplaySearch are predicting that the main players in OLED TVs the next 5 years will be Samsung, LG, Toshiba and Panasonic. Sony is not on the list.

Now a blog post on ZDNet says they have discussed this with a Sony spokesperson who says that Sony are "fully committed" to OLED TVs. Good to hear that. I guess we'll know more at IFA 2009. If Sony will indeed launch a new, larger OLED TV, it should make Sony's position a bit clearer...

There are rumors (from Industry insiders...) that Sony will be unveiling their 2nd generation OLED TVs at IFA 2009 - on the 4th of September.

Sony 27 OLED prototype (2008)

The XEL-2 (that's what we'll call it until Sony gives us an official name) might be a 27" model, as promised by Sony a year ago, or it might be the 21" displays shown just last week. We'll have to wait and see!
