Would it be possible to install MS-DOS, or Windows 95 onto this partition and copy the installation for Windows 2000 onto the hard drive, then install it from there? Can someone help me with this?

Hi,

im having allsorts of problems when I try to make my machine dual boot, with XP 1st on C: and Vista afterwards; some reason last time I did this they were both on partion 0, and not in the order i installed, so XP had been changed to D: and Vista onto C:. confused??? yep, so am i.

I have XP installed first, as when I did Vista then XP I found that Vista had all the folders and folders from my XP directory. So infact Vista was doubling up, and running out of HD space.

So, hence my posting to get the proper information for partitioning, and dual booting.

I've made a partion with the tools available with the XP Installion CD. And installation absolutely fine. And manually downloading all 3 service packs in order.

Now I'd love your help to install Vista onto a new partition and dual boot, without me having to reformat my entire HD and do everything again and again.

A few bits i'd also like to have in consideration, in the help.

Does it matter if I install the 2 service packs later after I've done the easy BCD setup, or should I do those first. I ask as I had problems with the 2nd Service Pack in not installing at all.

And Do I install EasyBCD onto XP if that is the first OS I have installed?

Thankyou for your interest and time in helping me,
Cheers Clyde.

I've just sent off for all the widgets for my first attempt at building a pc.

I plan on installing XP on it. I plan to bypass Vista at this point since I don't own a copy and buy Windows 7 when it's released.

Will BCD function with W-7? I didn't see it listed as a compatible program. I realize it it still an RC.

In dual booting, can 2 OS reside on the same PHYSICAL drive but in separate partitions?

Thanks for entertaining basic questions.

I seem to be having some issues with my Program Files folders, specifically with my games. Namely, they don't seem to create save files to disk that can be found, copied, or deleted. My computer has been having a few issues recently, so I thought I'd get everything backed up and ready to reinstall/wipe out my computer...but if I can't bring my game saves with me, I'd be rather sad. I've tried doing some different things with the properties and security permissions, but nothing seems to work. (Just to note, I do have system files and hidden files visible for the time being, to keep my options open). As a comparative test, I copied one of my games' folders to my desktop. When I loaded the game, it had no record of any saved files. However, when I created a new game and saved it, a save game folder was created and the file was visible. Obviously there's something going on with the Program Files properties, and in the future, I may just install my games to the desktop to avoid this happening again...any suggestions on how I might be able to find my current saved files? They must exist somewhere, since the copied folder didn't recognize any connected files.

Anyways, any assistance and input would be most helpful! Thanks =)

</Eric>

Addendum:

So it's working fine now. For whatever reason, some of the permissions editing didn't seem to work before. So, in order to get around that, I found that I could run the game program as an administrator. When I did so, none of the save files were there, however, by saving a game it created a folder to allow saved files. Exit out, start the game again normally, save a game, and now it's appearing in the folder that the administrator created.

Still a bit strange, but I think I can get this to work now? Going to try to see if this will work with the other games I have.

Ok, so I have a SONY Vaio VGN-FZ150E with Vista Home Premium. My laptop was working fine until recently, when my laptop ran out of battery. The next time I turned on my laptop, a black screen with a blinking cursor. From here, I cannot press any button (believe me, I tried everything except combinations of buttons) because they just make a beeping sound. I downloaded a Vista recovery disc from NeoSmart and burned the ISO to a disc. Now I have the options of installing Vista or repairing. I'm hoping I can just repair Vista. So I tried using every System Recovery Option but when I click Startup Repair, it says that the computer cannot be repaired automatically. When I try System Restore, I recieve a message saying that my Vista is not compatible with the recovery. Following a thread online, I chose the space below my Vista (something to do with a 32 bit and 64 bit vista), but it says that to perform an offline System Restore, I have to specify which Windows installation I want to restore. When I try Windows Complete PC Restore, it says that a valid backup location could not be found. Lastly, when I choose Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, my computer restarts, but upon restarting, I return to the black screen with a blinking cursor, and later the "press a key to boot blah blah." Please reply ASAP because I am leaving to another State by the end of this week and I apologize for the long message. Thanks.

Last week after using windows vista basic for the past 9 months i decided to try the windows 7 RC

after a week or so of using it just fine

i got the dreaded unmountable boot volume error

so i put in the disk i burnt my windows 7 RC too which should act as a disk to boot from to re-install/repair the RC but when i do this it loads the files as normal to do this but then i just get a black screen with a cursor i can move out but do nothing with..

so i thought it may just be a dodgy disk...

I reburnt it and got the same thing...

Downloaded the ISO file for the Vista recovery disk

using all the right programs for burning ISO's and everything..

and still excatly the same problem....just a hanging black screen and no HD activity...
Please please help as im at my wits end with this problem...

I have both xp and vista for quite some time on partitions. But i reinstalled my vista for some reason. Everytime i boot, the windos boot manager does appear any more. It directly boots to vista. So, i installed EasyBCD on vista and managed to add XP as another entry. When i boot this time, the boot manager appears but when i choose XP, only a black screen appears. My files on the XP partition are all intact, they're still there. What am i supposed to do? HELP!! lol. I want may XP back! :|
