Deluxe Hotels : The top deluxe hotels compare with the best worldwide. They provide all the comforts you expect: a high level of service, a choice of restaurants, 24-hour room service, a concierge to help you with am request, business centers, shopping arcades, health centers and travel service. They are very similar to their cousins in the US or Europe except that the rooms may be smaller than comparable ones in an American hotel. The international chains like Hilton and Hyatt have hotels in Japan, but there are also some excellent hotels that are independent or part of a Japanese chain. Within the rarefied top class of hotels, there is little to differentiate them except for location. Expect to pay 20,000 and up for a single in a deluxe hotel in a large city. Next come the medium-priced Western hotels. They are not as flashy as the deluxe and may not offer all the services; for example, there may be only one or two restaurants. Although the rooms are usually smaller and their carpets not

as new, they do have private baths. Medium priced hotels start at about 10,000 for a single.

Business Hotels offer Western-style accommodations and are geared to the Japanese businessman on a limited expense account. The rooms are small, functional and almost always have a small bathroom attached. They offer limited services no room service and sometimes no restaurant, but most will serve breakfast for a modest additional charge, usually between 700 and 1000. Business hotels sell drinks and cigarettes from vending machines.

The rooms can be very small, but business hotels are good choices for inexpensive accommodations in convenient locations often close to the train station. Just remember they’re not the Ritz. Business hotels vary in price from about 6000 to 12,000 for a single.

Pensions are usually small, Western-style accommodations in resort areas, especially in the mountains. They often pride themselves on their Western cuisine. Prices at pensions vary from 6000 to 15,000 and usually include two meals.

Youth Hostels are inexpensive accommodations open to people of any age. You do not need to be a member of the International Youth Hostel Federation. Service and facilities have been improving in recent years as the hostels have been trying to attract families and adult groups.
Youth hostels cost between 1500 and 4000 per person per night: meals are extra.

Ryokan Room

All the major hotels in Japan, are of a very high standard and service is quite simply excellent. The five stars hotels will all have very well trained, English (and other language) speaking staff and the amenities are comparable to five stars hotels in any other major city around the world. One type of hotel you will only find in Japan and makes for a very unusual and rich cultural experience is the Ryokan. Ryokan’s are generally small buildings with only 12 or so rooms, and they have quite a few rules and regulations, which follow the average Japanese culture. Ryokan’s are perhaps better suited for people that have an understanding and respect for Japanese culture, or leisure travellers looking to learn, rather than business people who have a tight schedule to fill.

Another novelty to Japan’s hotel world is the capsule hotel. Capsule Hotels are very popular among Japanese business men who have missed the last train home, or have had perhaps too much of a good time entertaining clients and/or friends. These unusual hotels are in-expensive but not somewhere you would really want to spend any length of time. There are no rooms as such at a capsule hotel, guests sleep in enclosed, cramped, almost coffin like in shape, spaces.

The Edo Shogunate ordered the planting of cedar trees along the old Tokaido highway in 1618. The main mode of travel then was on foot and the cedar trees provided welcome comfort for travelers from the hot sun of summer and the snow of winter.
