The newly planted organic garden at the White House has yielded it's first harvest. Celebrating with a crowd of schoolchildren, Michelle Obama praised the project and the value of eating nutritious foods. According to Healthy Child Healthy World.com, "In her speech, Mrs. Obama highlighted some staggering statistics:

Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high-blood pressure are all diet-related health issues that cost more than $120 billion each year.
Nearly one third of American children are either overweight or obese, and a third will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lifetime. In Hispanic and African American communities, nearly half of the children in those communities will suffer the same fate.

The Beijing Olympics of 2008 were the most polluted games ever with athletes and spectators exposed to dangerous level of smog, researchers have concluded. Do you find this ironic? "China's Olympics had double the level of soot as Athens, triple the levels as Atlanta and 3.5 times higher than as Sydney." The level of toxic smog of soot particles in the air was so high that at times the sun was blotted out. Despite the last minute efforts of Chinese officials, dangerous pollution persisted though factories were shut down, travel was restricted and construction was limited. "Researchers found for four fifths of the time athletes were exposed to levels of coarse particular matter higher than considered safe by the international health watchdog, the World Health Organization."

I am continually working on my house - painting, tiling, upgrading. I do A LOT of painting. Both at work and at home. I have never liked the smell of interior house paint and I could feel my chest getting tighter and tighter as I layered on the color. So, with my latest project, an enclosed bathroom (no outside window), I decided to spend a little extra money on one of the new paints which contain no VOC's (volatile organic compounds). I chose Freshaire paint which I purchased from The Home Depot. The link for this feed is a very good review from Popular Mechanics of several "green" paints plus comments from folks who have used several different brands. It's worth reading this report if you do household upgrades like I do! My own review - I really liked Freshaire paint. The color was beautiful and rich. The coverage was very good. It has a thick consistency with very little dripping. It did not trigger my asthma or cause a headache. Though no paint is going to be completely safe for our health, it's good to know there are some healthier options for those of us who like to color our worlds.
