iPhone 3GS: Jailbreak and unlock it the non-Dev Team way

So far the iPhone Dev Team have been reluctant to release their jailbreak and unlock tool for the iPhone 3GS. Though the Dev Team says this is possible, they feel that iPhone OS firmware 3.1 which may soon be released will cause a rapid repeat of their cat and mouse game with Apple. So where is this non-Dev Team jailbreak method coming from? George or GeoHot says the following…

Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week.

Though George did say the above, its important to note that if you have the iPhone 3GS and want to make sure that your iPhone 3GS is unlockable under future releases of new firmware, you should NOT yet update to 3.1 even if you have access to it. The reason for this is that the unlocking tool ultrasn0w which has been tested to work for the iPhone 3GS also relies on the iPhone 3GS’ baseband, updating to 3.1 without the assistance of a tool will affect it, as mentioned briefly by the iPhone Dev Team:

“injection vector will be lost if you update to 3.1 using the official Apple IPSW, which updates the baseband.”

iPhone 3GS users, we must also warn you because the below tool for jailbreak by George / GeoHot isn’t the official tool from the Dev Team, it would be difficult for us or many to provide you with any support should anything happen to your iPhone 3GS during the jailbreak. But GeoHot has mentioned that you can contact him via a support email which he has provided on his blog.

So here’s how this iPhone 3GS jailbreak tool known as purplera1n (yes, purplerain) by GeoHot works:

Tips before you start:

• Backup!
• You will need to be running Windows XP / Vista not Windows 7.
• You will need to be using the latest version of iTunes.
• If you don’t see Cydia installed after jailbreaking, just reboot your iPhone 3GS.

Steps / Instructions to Jailbreak:

1. Download purplera1n.exe.
2. Connect your iPhone normally.
3. Click “make it ra1n” then wait.
4. When your iPhone boots up, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app.
5. Then follow what the app says!

Once you have jailbroken successfully, all you need to do to unlock is use ultrasn0w as if you had the iPhone 3G.

Flip Video launches second generation Flip Ultra, Flip UltraHD pocket camcorders

Flip Video has announced its revamped Flip Ultra and Flip ultra HD. They are the second genernation model of its flagship Flip Ultra packet camcorder, which was launched about a year ago.

The key advances features for both the latest Ultra and UltraHD includes a doubling of internal memory capacity, allowing users to capture up to two hours of footage on the camera . Sony announces two new compact audio systems NAS-Z200iR and CMT-Z100iR

Sony has announced two new Sony compact audio systems: NAS-Z200iR and CMT-Z100iR. They may be minimalist in style, but come packed with features: a docking station for an iPod, a slot loading CD player, a USB port, PC streaming and Internet radio (NAS-Z200iR) and an integrated AM/FM radio.

NAS-Z200iR features Certified Wi-Fi, allowing easy wireless data transfer so you can access the music library on your PC, nd play your tracks back on the Z200iR. It also comes with an intuitive remote control with a 3.5-inch LCD display.

The other compact sound systemn is the CMT-Z100iR, which comes in glossyblack and in white. The acoustic technologies used allow music to be delivered in rich and clear sound that’s beyound expectations from a sustem this small.

UK: Toshiba TG01 to be unveiled on July 9

While no official date is yet available for those in the States, it looks like the 9th of July will be the date in which the Snapdragon chipset powered Toshiba TG01 will soon be officially unveiled here in the UK. It’s slim, powerful and runs on 256MB of RAM, the TG01 was first revealed to the world at this year’s MWC.

With a 4.1-inch WVGA (800 x 480) touchscreen display, the TG01 packs the quality specs of a potential iPhone killer; WiFi, GPS, 3.2-megapixel camera and 3G data connectivity all within its only 10mm-thick body.

Playstation emulator app for Palm Pre

We know that the Palm Pre isn’t just capable of multitasking but also emulating the NES for some retro gaming. But did it ever occur to anyone that it could also run Playstation games? This is exactly what this latest development has done. ZodTTD who is a master in this specialty has in the past done similar work for the iPhone, this time though he used his jailbroken Palm Pre and loaded up his Playstation psx4all emulator for some Wipeout gameplay.

Though there are still areas that needs to be improved with this new psx4pre, there is no doubt his genius work will be thanked by tons of Pre users who will enjoy abit of Playstation gaming fun every now and then.

As addressed by ZodTTD, here are the few issues that still needs to be improved.

• There is no sound output (but it’s emulated), as Pulse Audio is required for the Palm Pre, and I have yet to support it. It will come soon.
• I have not figured out hardware rotation or scaling, or whether it is possible. Until then I am using the raw framebuffer device and blitting 320×240 software scaled.
• I figured out how to read the keypad device on the Palm Pre, though there are times it fails to give a keyup event, making keys “stick”. This is annoying and I’m looking for a workaround.
• As things progress I will have fullscreen landscape working as well.

Firefox 3.5: Pasts one million downloads, almost 100 per second!

Firefox 3.5 is shaping up to be one of the most successful Firefox releases to date. Its been reported that the fastest Firefox yet has already been download more than one million times (within a matter of hours and counting!) with downloads almost hitting 100 per second, that’s quite something.

So how does 1.3 million downloads in a few hours stack up against its rivals? Well, the most recent browser to offer a major upgrade was Safari, which claimed 11 million downloads in 3 days. But those numbers are tricky because Apple includes Safari updates in its regular OS X software updates, so pretty much all OS X users were at least asked to upgrade after its launch. Still, Apple claimed that of the 11 million, some 6 million were users on Windows machines. And Firefox also pings users to do auto-updates when a new version is available.

Latest technology: Toyota develops mind controlled wheelchair

The clever Japanese researchers at the Brain Science Institute (BSI) Toyota Collaboration Center have done something quite incredible once again. Using a wheelchair controlled by brain waves measured using EEG, it’s basically a system that will control the ride using brain waves analysed every 125 milliseconds; therefore the name “mind controlled wheelchair”.

As you will see in the video to follow, testers using the wheelchair and the EEG cap system have achieved accuracy of up to 95% which is not a bad figure considering a high tech wheelchair like this may be used in place of current manual wheelchairs for patients who have had strokes or other significant mobility impairments.

Major advantages of the new technology

• Commands for smooth left and right turns and forward motion of the wheelchair are processed every 125 milliseconds by analyzing brain waves using signal processing technology.
• Brain-wave analysis data are displayed on a screen in real time, giving neuro-feedback to the driver for efficient operation.
• This technology is expected to be useful in the field of rehabilitation, and for physical and psychological support of wheelchair drivers.

The BSI-TOYOTA Collaboration Center (BTCC; Hidenori Kimura, Director), has succeeded in developing a system which utilizes one of the fastest technologies in the world, controlling a wheelchair using brain waves in as little as 125 milliseconds (one millisecond, or ms, is equal to 1/1000 seconds).  BTCC was established in 2007 by RIKEN, an independent administrative institution (Ryoji Noyori, President), as a collaborative project with Toyota Motor Corporation (Akio Toyoda, President), Toyota Central R&D Labs, Inc. (Takashi Saito, President), and Genesis Research Institute, Inc. (Kiyoshi Nakanishi, Representative Director of Research).  Also collaborating in the research were Andrzej Cichocki, Unit Leader, and Kyuwan Choi, Research Scientist, of BTCC’s Noninvasive BMI Unit.

Recently technological developments in the area of brain machine interface (BMI) have received much attention.  Such systems allow elderly or handicapped people to interact with the world through signals from their brains, without having to give voice commands.

BTCC’s new system fuses RIKEN’s blind signal separation¹ and space-time-frequency filtering² technology to allow brain-wave analysis in as little as 125 ms, as compared to several seconds required by conventional methods.  Brain-wave analysis results are displayed on a panel so quickly that drivers do not sense any delay.  The system has the capacity to adjust itself to the characteristics of each individual driver, and thereby is able to improve the efficiency with which it senses the driver’s commands.  Thus the driver is able to get the system to learn his/her commands (forward/right/left) quickly and efficiently.  The new system has succeeded in having drivers correctly give commands to their wheelchairs.  An accuracy rate of 95% was achieved, one of the highest in the world.

Plans are underway to utilize this technology in a wide range of applications centered on medicine and nursing care management.  R&D under consideration includes increasing the number of commands given and developing more efficient dry electrodes.  So far the research has centered on brain waves related to imaginary hand and foot control.  However, through further measurement and analysis it is anticipated that this system may be applied to other types of brain waves generated by various mental states and emotions.

Firefox 3.5 released! Video of new features…

After months of testing and three RCs, Firefox 3.5 is now available for download! Strangely, its not yet available via Mozilla’s download pages but it is now downloadable via Filehippo and Softpedia. With Firefox 3.5 being the latest and fastest Firefox yet, its probably time to introduce to you folks what features you might expect to see should you choose to give it a go.

• Improved tools for controlling your private data, including a Private Browsing Mode.
• Better performance and stability with the new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine.
• The ability to provide Location Aware Browsing using web standards for geolocation.
• Support for native JSON, and web worker threads.
• Improvements to the Gecko layout engine, including speculative parsing for faster content rendering.
• Support for new web technologies such as: HTML5 and elements, downloadable fonts and other new CSS properties, JavaScript query selectors, HTML5 offline data storage for applications, and SVG transforms.

As a long time Firefox user and fan myself, I am keen on seeing whether this new 3.5 final release lives up to the saying “Firefox 3.5 treats videos as normal webpages”. What’s definitely useful will be private browsing in which Firefox won’t remember any of the pages you visit in its history when you’re in this mode. Tab tearing will also be commonly used by bloggers especially, this new function will allow drag and drop of tabs across different Firefox windows.

iPhone 3.0 has settled in quite well in my view and I am sure many have been more than pleased to see Apple finally give the iPhone features such as copy and paste, MMS, landscape mode typing, Spotlight search, push notifications and many more. But did you know that actually there are some “hidden” functions that weren’t announced?

You may have figured out some of them yourself already but there are actually quite a few of them. I wouldn’t like to call this a secret but rather just tips and tricks to using the new iPhone OS 3.0. Check out the full list after the break…

1. You can now have 11 home screens instead of the previous limit of 9 home screens. So you can now launch 32 more iPhone apps from your iPhone’s home screen.
2. Thanks to Spotlight for iPhone, there is no limit on the number of iPhone apps that can be installed on the iPhone running iPhone OS 3.0 assumming that you have the required storage space on your iPhone. If you install more applications then the home screen icon limit, you can now access them using Spotlight.
3. This hidden feature addresses one of the minor annoyance in previous iPhone OS. When a phone call interrupts you, after the phone call you are taken back to the iPhone app you were using before you were interrupted.
4. iPhone’s virtual keyboard has also been updated with few more extra special characters while holding certain characters down similar to the “.com” button. In iPhone OS 3.0, when you hold down the “.” you also get “…”. The dash “-” also displays an em-dash “-” and quotations and apostrophes display “<<” and “>>” and can also be curved.
5. Along with Spotlight, Apple has also added Camera app to the Home button settings (Settings > General > Home Button) in iPhone fimrware 3.0 so if the Camera application is your favorite iPhone; you can quickly launch it from your iPhone’s home screen or any other iPhone app by double-clicking on the Home button.
6. You now have another option to force quit an unresponsive iPhone app. You can hold the sleep/wake button until the red slider appears, then press and hold down the home button to quit the iPhone app.
7. You can undo typing by shaking the iPhone. When you are in the Mail, Messaging, Safari or Notes applications, after you typed a word/several words, just shake the phone and a pop-up will appear, asking you whether you want to undo what you have just entered.

Rumor: 16GB Zune HD to cost up to 20% less than equivalent iPod?

The latest rumor to develop over the upcoming Zune HD reincarnation is about the 16GB version of the new Microsoft portable media player. Its been said that an engineer from Microsoft has leaked pricing info that the 16GB Zune HD will cost in the range of $250 and $280.

As pointed out by CrunchGear, the similar spec 16GB iPod Touch currently costs $300, this rumor therefore implies that the upcoming 16GB rival may be cheaper by around 10% to 20%. This is great news for Zune fans, especially considering this more affordable price will include that rather expensive OLED screen. Is it a temptation for iPod users?

Sea-Quad - amphibious wind glider for rich people

This new vehicle known as the Sea Quad allows lazy surfers to surf on the beach as well as on the sea without ever needing to get up (or fall off). This is certainly no ordinary surf board. The Sea Quad is sail powered which means it does rely on wind power, the sail is connected to a steering bar allowing you to glide through winds at whatever speed it allows.

Though the Sea Quad is no Rinspeed sQuba, once its development completes, it’ll set you back $13,950 which isn’t the type of budget anyone could afford under the current day economics.

LightLane bike safety concept becomes reality

As a cyclist myself I couldn’t be more happier to see this concept become reality. The video after the jump features LightLane, a bicycle light concept which aimed to increase safety of cyclists by using “super-bright red LEDs” along with two highly visible diode-pumped solid state green lasers to project a path which appears as a bike lane.

If you asked me, I can see the LightLane becoming one of the bestselling bike gadgets to come, that is if they don’t decide to overprice it too much!

HTC Hero - first Android phone with flash support

The first Android phone with flash support has been unveiled. A true iPhone killer this time? Known as the HTC Hero, it is a phone which has been speculated with images leaked previously, now officially revealed and pictured below.

The new open source Android based HTC Hero sports a 3.2-inch HVGA (480×320) screen, a five megapixel camera with autofocus, AGPS, digital compass, gravity sensor, 3.5mm headphone jack and a dedicated search button. On the inside lies 512MB of storage, expandable by microSD, 288MB of RAM, and a 528MHz Qualcomm processor.

The Hero will be available later this summer in Europe in July and Asia later in the summer, but won’t be available to the US until some point later this year.

The 32GB SanDisk Extreme SDHC card adheres to the SD Association’s new Class 10 specification, which exceeds requirement for today’s high definition (AVCHD) video recording. Transformers 2 Revenge of the Fallen movie character guide

Its all been about the new Transformers 2 Revenge of the Fallen movie this week. While it was already out last Friday here in the UK, Wednesday (today) is the day that it will hit the US, I am sure many readers are just about to head over to the cinemas and watch it.

If you’re a Transformers fan like myself and have seen the first one, you will notice this second sequel Revenge of the Fallen has been given a number of new bots both on the Autobots side and more on the Decepticons side. To me the story line Michael Bay has done with this movie was just as fantastic as the first, Optimus Prime getting beaten like hell by too many Decepticons as always. Humans work in secret with Optimus Prime and a line-up of Autobots to battle the malicious Decepticons that remain hidden on Earth. Sam Witwicky (Shia Labeouf) gears up for his own challenge as a freshman at college, where his relationship with girlfriend Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox) endures its own tests namely, an alluring co-ed with her eye on Sam (Isabel Lucas).

Unlock iPhone 3G 3.0 with ultrasn0w, not iPhone 3GS

Update (03072009): A non-iPhone Dev Team jailbreak tool for the iPhone 3GS has been released allowing you to use the ultrasn0w for unlocking purposes afterwards!

Just a few days later than we had anticipated due to a few problems encountered by the iPhone Dev Team but ultrasn0w has finally been released. The latest iPhone OS 3.0 unlocking tool for iPhone 3G which was originally known as yellowsn0w has now been renamed as ultrasn0w.

It is very simple to use, in fact you don’t need to download it from a computer, all you need to do is have your iPhone 3G jailbroken using Pwnage Tool or redsn0w so that you can have access to apps from Cydia, from there simply search for ultrasn0w.

Read carefully the instructions which have been given out by the team…

1. Ensure you have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0
2. Jailbreak your iPhone 3G using redsn0w or PwnageTool (this will also install Cydia/Icy)
3. Run Cydia or Icy
4. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”! If you use the letter “o” you’ll get an error.
5. Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w
6. Reboot your iPhone 3G
7. T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w
8. Enjoy

Redsn0w released - jailbreak 3.0 on second gen iPod Touch

Just heads up to all PC users that the iPhone Dev Team’s latest release of redsn0w is compatible with Mac OS X and PC. Redsn0w has very similar functionality to Quickpwn, it will jailbreak firmware OS 3.0 running on first and second generation iPhone, iPhone 3G, first and second generation iPod Touch but not iPhone 3GS.

If you’re a PC user and haven’t been able to use Pwnage Tool for jailbreaking your device due to its Mac OS X specificity then redsn0w is definitely worth having a look at as it essentially provides the same outcome. For full details, check out our full guide.

T-Mobile myTouch 3G Android phone available for pre order

You may call it the G2 or the HTC Magic, the new T-Mobile myTouch 3G is essentially the US T-Mobile equivalent of Vodafone HTC Magic which have here in the UK. The specs are largely similar too, the T-Mobile myTouch features a 3.2-inch HVGA touch-screen display and virtual keyboard.

The myTouch also features a 3.2-megapixel camera, a music player with a pre-installed 4GB microSD memory card, and enhanced video capabilities to make it easy for users to record and share pictures and videos, whether via e-mail, MMS or one-click upload to sites such as YouTube and Picasa.

The myTouch 3G mobile Web experience is supported by fast data speeds via Wi-Fi and T-Mobile’s 3G network. T-Mobile USA in early August. This second Android powered mobile device to arrive T-Mobile USA will be available for pre-order as of July 8th for a retail price of $199 with a two year agreement. As you can see in the image above, the rumored colours were also correct with white, black, and “distinctive merlot”.

Stay updated with Wimbledon apps for iPhone and Android

Today is the first day of Wimbledon 2009! Here are two completely free official Wimbledon 2009 applications that will allow you to stay updated with the latest news and results on your iPhone or Android device while you’re on the go.

Brought to you by IBM, all the news which will be featured within the apps will be done by IBM’s Wimbledon scouts, live starting from today!

For Android

If you’re an Android user, the app known as IBM Seer beta will feature location-aware elements, allowing you to use your Android blower as a real-time guide and interactive map of the tournament. Using GPS, you’ll get a heads up display augmented with live data from the scoring systems and IBM scouts reporting from around the grounds.

If you pointing the camera lens towards a court, for instance, you’ll get the court number, and also details about the current and subsequent matches.

In Map View, your location is pinpointed on a detailed map of the grounds, while you can receive an aggragation of news feeds and updates from IBM scouts, and see in real-time what is happening around the site. And a radar function will help you pinpoint places of interest in your vicinity.

One small problem though, having just looked at the official page for this app, the download link is still unavailable, but we’ll update this as soon as it shows up!

For iPhone / iPod Touch

We’ve just done a quick search of the apps that claim to bring you the latest on this year’s Wimbledon on your iPhone, there are mainly three of them but we would recommend you stick with the official one which is absolutely free. Again, brought to you by IBM this app features news, live scores update, daily schedule of play, draws and on demand video highlights. We can’t wait to find out how well the last function works, lets hope its speedy!

Latest gadgets: Cideko wireless media keyboard

Are you the type of computer user who doesn’t really get up to much typing and instead use your computer mainly for entertainment purposes? If that is you, then you might be interested in this new wireless keyboard by Cideko that’s aimed at the so-called media keyboards niche.

While there isn’t yet any official info with regards to specs or pricing, it looks from the pictures a rather small keyboard set. What’s special is that the new Cideko wireless media keyboard also sports a mouse that you can operate in mid air, Cideko are quite good at making odd things happen.

Though we don’t think this new style of mouse in the air will be very practical, it will be interesting to see how this tiny but full QWERTY keyboard performs, the buttons look pretty small but its mobility will certainly be an advantage.

PC case mod: Everything in a log!

Here’s a bit of geeky PC fun for you all this Monday morning. This particular modder had a rather different approach to case mods and decided to apply more creativity and build this “log computer”. All the gut components of a PC have been fitted into this wooden log which has been carved especially for it.

The finish looks elegant and is a fantastic piece of carpentry. Might I say, this log computer case mod is unlikely to overheat with so much open space! Check out the full gallery after the jump…

Pwned! Jailbreak, unlock 3.0 on iPhone and iPod Touch (updated with redsn0w for PC and Mac!)

Update (22062009): The latest redsn0w tool has been released, both PC and Mac versions available and provides a solution for jailbreaking and unlocking first generation iPhone, jailbreaking iPhone 3G (not iPhone 3GS), jailbreaking both first and second generation iPod Touch. Scroll down and find out more!

Just as we expected everyone, preliminary jailbreak and unlocking tools for iPhone OS 3.0 have been released. Why the word preliminary? Only first generation iPhone 2G and the first generation both generations of iPod Touch running the new iPhone 3.0 can be jailbroken and unlocked at this point.

A few things iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S users need to know first:

• The iPhone Dev Team have already said that they are working on it and the rest of the tools, ie the new yellowsn0w aka ultrasn0w, unlock for iPhone 3G will be released in due course, not very long now!
• The new Pwnage Tool released (download links below) can jailbreak the iPhone 3G but will not be able to unlock it, you will therefore loose the ability to use your iPhone 3G as a phone should you do that! However, once the new ultrasn0w unlocking tool is out, you will simply just need to apply it to get it connecting to your carrier’s network again
• Pwnage Tool will not work for iPhone 3G S
• Ultrasn0w will not work for iPhone 3G S
• If you have one of those very expensive iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S’ which have been factory unlocked, you are safe to upgrade to iPhone OS 3.0, as your iPhone will never get locked up. If its the iPhone 3G, you can simply apply the new Pwnage Tool to get it jailbroken for using third party apps.

If you have the first generation iPhone or iPod Touch (no support for second generation iPod Touch users), all you need to do is upgrade your firmware to OS 3.0 via your iTunes. Then download Pwnage Tool (for Mac only) or redsn0w (for Mac and PC) and follow its instructions to have your device jailbroken and/or unlocked.

iPhone 3G users, if you want to upgrade to 3.0 but want to retain the possibility of unlocking your iPhone 3G in the future then don’t upgrade your phone directly via iTunes as this will also upgrade your phone’s baseband. You must download Pwnage Tool below and allowing it to maintain your present baseband during the upgrade to 3.0. As a reminder, Pwnage Tool is not an unlocking tool and will only jailbreak your iPhone 3G.

At this point, you may still be wondering what the differences are between Pwnage Tool and redsn0w. Redsn0w was originally created as a jailbreaking tool for second generation iPod Touch. Pwnage Tool on the other hand has more recently been known as the tool for jailbreaking iPhone and iPhone 3G while preserving baseband for unlocking. Generally if you are an first generation iPhone user, you can use either one of them as it doesn’t matter. If you are an iPhone 3G user, like we mentioned above, you must use Pwnage Tool to maintain your baseband. If you are an iPod Touch user, first or second generation, using redsn0w is fine.

Like we mentioned above, Pwnage Tool is Mac OS X only while redsn0w is multi-platform and has PC and Mac OS X versions.

Samsung LD220 - world’s first USB monitor “dedicated to notebooks”

You would think these would be available by now wouldn’t you? Nope, this is actually the world’s first. This latest gadget, the Samsung LD220 USB monitor has been unveiled at the World IT Show 2009 in Korea. Dedicated for quick plug and play use with laptops and netbooks, the LD220 provides a brightness level of 300cd/m2, a contrast ratio of 30,000:1 and a response speed of 5ms.

Pricing details are yet to be revealed, but the LD220 will certainly not be world’s only USB monitor for very long, these gadgets should become much more popular as time comes as they are definitely very convenient to have.

Artmu laptop sleeve transforms into a mouse pad

A company called Artmu has come up with a not so techy but revolutionary design to laptop sleeves. Ok, the word revolutionary may be an exaggeration but this isn’t a bad idea at all. Available in red, pink or black, the protective sleeve opens up to become a cushion for your laptop as well as a mouse pad.

The Artmu laptop sleeve will be available for laptops of all sizes, including 10″, 13″ and 15″, with price ranging from $15 to $20 respectively.

The Palm Pre, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G S is no doubt three of this year’s top smartphones. In this latest CNET video segment, Brian Tong performs a few tests and sees which one is actually more suited for “real life” daily use.

iPhone OS 3.0 unlock: New ultrasn0w unlocks iPhone 3G on any bootloader

The day has finally come everyone, Apple has just released iPhone OS 3.0 (also iPod Touch 3.0). The biggest problem a number of you who have jailbroken or unlocked iPhones will soon be pondering about will be whether or not to click that update button. If that’s you, so far, we do not recommend you do that. However, having said that, first generation iPhone users are relatively safe given that you don’t mind having a locked iPhone for just a few days. For iPhone 3G users, from what we’ve read so far we would recommend you hold on abit.

The reason for the above is because the iPhone Dev Team has updated and said that their tools for jailbreaking (such as Pwnage Tool and QuickPwn) and unlocking will be out by the end of this week at the latest. The best news is that yellowsn0w which is the Dev Team’s ultimate tool for unlocking the iPhone 3G (and 3G S to come) for use on other carrier networks has been updated and now called, ultrasn0w.

In the video below, you’ll see how the new and improved ultrasn0w will work, its as simple and just as quick as the old yellowsn0w. Ultrasn0w will be the iPhone OS 3.0’s first unlock tool and will work with any bootloader version! We have heard many of you tell us about your bootloader problems, since newer bootloader versions prevent downgrade of the iPhone’s baseband which is required in order to use the previous yellowsn0w. Apple iPhone (and iPod Touch) OS 3.0 is out!

The latest firmware 3.0 for iPhone and iPod Touch is now out, check your iTunes everyone! If you’ve got a jailbroken or unlocked iPhone, you might want to hold back from upgrading until the new tools are released for jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone (2G, 3G and 3G S!).

Gallery: Apple releases photos taken with iPhone 3G S camera

Check out some of the photos which have been taken using the new and soon to be released iPhone 3G S. These have been released by Apple and no doubt were probably the best the new iPhone will manage. As you can see, they are not bad at all for a mobile phone. The improved three megapixel camera with touch focus and shooting modes such as close up macro won’t cause a dramatic change in the way people view the iPhone as a camera phone but nevertheless it will likely still remain highly popular on sites such as Flickr.

Samsung launches Omnia II, Omnia Pro and Omnia Lite

Samsung has officially launched the latest Omnia series lineup consisting of three new phones - Omnia II (Omnia 2), Omnia Pro and Omnia Lite.

Omnia II (I800) features a 3.7-WVGA AMOLED touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera with CMOS sensor and the TouchWiz 2.0, in addition to Windows Mobile 6.1. It has the same good audio and video codec support as on the Jet, A2DP Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and HSDPA. It size is measured in at approximately 118 x 60 x 11.9mm. The Omnia II is available with 2GB, 8GB or 16GB internal memory, all expandable with microSD card.

Next up is the Omnia Pro B7610 ( previously know as the Louvre), which is designed to be a work and play combo machine. It features a 5-megapixel CMOS camera, 3.5-inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen, an impressive 800 x 480 resolution while running on Windows Mobile 6.1. What makes it different from the other two new Omnia series phones is the slide-out QWERTY which I must say makes it my favourite as well. However, it only has 1GB of expandable storage.

Finally is the Omnia Lite. Although it doesn’t have a range of top features like the other two in the new Omnia lineup, it’s going to be cheap and affordable. Omina Lite features a 3-megapixel CMOS senor camera, a 3-inch WQVGA display and 250MB of expandable storage.  The phone is only 103g, measuring in at 107 x 51.8 x 12.9mm.

Confirmed: Yellowsn0w to unlock iPhone 3.0

More news to come later today folks but the iPhone Dev Team yesterday already confirmed the inevitable. iPhone OS 3.0 which is expected to be released and available for all to download later today will be unlockable using yellowsn0w, the Dev Team’s iPhone 3G unlock solution. The team has also confirmed that jailbreak using Pwnage Tool and QuickPwn through iTunes 8.2 on iPhone 3.0 should be and will be as snappy as versions before. More news on when these tools will be available soon.

DIY: Recycle old CDs and DVDs into an iPhone dock

If you’re like me and have got lots of old CDs and DVDs lying around at home, this new DIY iPhone dock created by our friends at Geeky Gadgets could help you make use of those long forgotten discs. I usually donate my old discs to charity shops, however I have lots with missing cases, so I might actually try this myself too.

The Recycled CD iPhone Dock will work for iPods and iPhones, you will require about 11 CDs or DVDs, some super glue and also a Dremel for cutting through the discs itself. As you can see in the picture above, the finished product looks geeky cool and stylish, if you’re interested, we recommend you check out the full guide at the link below.

The folks at Engadget CN have received the new 32GB version, iPhone 3G S in black. The quick gallery below shows some hands on treatment using the new built in compass as well as the voice control. Yes, the back of the iPhone 3G S is still very glossy unfortunately, making it highly prone to scratches and fingerprints. I wouldn’t put off the thought of an iPhone 3G S with matte finish though, discussions on iPhonehacks regarding this are still very convincing.

Leaked: Nikon D300S DSLR LCD screen

Leaked by Nikon themselves, it looks like Nikon D300S is currently in the making. The below Nikon LCD screen gives it away at both corners, its said that the image was taken from an official Nikon USA site. In addition, the left bottom corner’s SD logo hints dual card support which if is true will be excellent news.

Nikon Rumors have also kindly and swiftly compared the above shot with that of the Nikon D300, confirming that a D300S is likely to be in the making. The shot has now been taken off Nikon’s site but this rumor should look to be 99% accurate, I wonder what further specs may soon unfold?

How to: Get NES emulator app running on Palm Pre

Some very clever folks who have been playing around with the Palm Pre have managed to stuff the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) emulator into the new Palm mobile. This allows you to virtually play any NES game at a maximum resolution of 320×480, after some display setting tweaks that is.

It isn’t a clean and simple walk in the park though. “All it requires is a quick trip to root on the device a compile of the FCEUltra NES emulator for Linux and bam, it’s good to go.” - This isn’t as simple as it sounds folks. But if you do know a fair bit about Linux then you could certainly give it a go, hit the Pre Dev Wiki link below for full instructions.
