Davis Cup, USA vs Croatia

I guess I'll pick the USA, but they certainly have a tough road, with Cilic and Karlovic in their path.
DNN 5 Upgrade Woes ... Hints

Well, this post solved one problem I've been having with a DNN 5 upgrade: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/33/threadid/126628/scope/posts/Default.aspx. Was getting: "Private Shared objProvider As DataProvider = Nothing" as part of an error. Removing the DLLs seemed to have done the trick ... at least the site loads now!

If us old folks arrive, will the youngsters leave?

Well, this is what MAY be happening on Facebook. Statistics from this article: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/facebooks_own_estimates_show_youth_flight_from_sit.php indicate that this may be happening. It makes sense, as what self-respecting teenager would like their parents or grandparents on their "friends" list.

Interesting stuff (I'm still not on Facebook, nor do I anticipate joining anytime soon).

Academic Search Engine Comparisons

Saw this one while it still was in beta (I think), and it has certainly progressed ... I could have used it last year at a previous consulting assignment. Go to: http://www.jisc-adat.com/adat/home.pl ... you can compare academic databases, and it provides overlaps, etc. Very nice. (try comparing Scopus and WOS ... note the overlap, but also the wide range of unique journals to each ... there still isn't a global database that can claim to be comprehensive!

Of course, it would be nice to also see Google Scholar alongside as well.

TBD to deadpool ... lessons learned

Suppose you built a site and nobody came? TBD aimed to capture the boomer market, but unfortunately, the boomers wanted to get their own facebook accounts! Read more at: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/06/30/tbd-joins-the-deadpool/.

Interesting to see if any demographic specific sites (for us older folks) have any measure of success in the future.

How much does it cost to make a mac mini?

Read more about this at: http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Desktops-and-Notebooks/Apples-600-Mac-Mini-Costs-It-Nearly-400-to-Make-Says-iSuppli-163404/?kc=EWKNLNAV06302009STR2.

A side note to eweek, what is the deal with the banner and the background? If I was browsing at a lower resolution the pages would have been a bit (more) annoying!

Yes, we provide PC Tech Support for the St. Louis Area

Occassionally I'm asked if I can:

Setup a small network

Troubleshoot balky PCs

Recover Lost Data

Setup Automated Backups

Spec New Hardware and software

Provide Training and Support

And of course the answer is yes! I've been in business for over 15 years, and have extensive experience in these matters. Plus, we can often use our remote control software to remotely diagnose your PC! Email (lmrazek@lcm-res.com) or call 314-432-5886 for more information.

Wimbledon!

Go to: http://www.wimbledon.org/ to view live scores, lookup stats etc.

And a shout out to Vince Spadea, who defeated his opponent in straight sets ... I think he's 35 and still able to win a grand slam match ... not too bad, considering most guys are out of tennis by 30.

Google and the book settlement

I never really liked how Google ignored copyright (for the good of the people, of course!), and thought this article on Techcrunch was an interesting discussion of some of the issues: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/06/15/bezos-doesnt-like-googles-book-settlement-either/.

Not really, "do no evil" in my opinion.

Bing vs Yahoo Stats

I wish Microsoft would/could just buy Yahoo and get it over with ... at least the combined companies would have a better (albeit very small in my opinion) of offering an alternative to Google. A bit of pressure would be good for Google. Anyway, read more about the traffic stats (Yahoo vs Bing) at: http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Search-Engines/Microsofts-Bing-May-Not-Have-Lead-on-Yahoo-After-All-502719/?kc=EWKNLINF06102009STR5.
