While listening to the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast recently I learned of Scott Ginsberg. – The Nametag Guy. Scott has built his personal brand and his entire career from wearing a name tag each day!!!!

Isn’t the nametag thing an interesting stunt for him to get noticed and grow his personal brand as the nametag guy?

There is actually another interesting perspective to this gimmick. Scott says that his nametag actually makes him more approachable so he meets alot more people than he would normally meet because he has a nametag. He is now so into this that his nametag is tattooed onto his chest! He committed to his personal brand. It has certainly worked for him, Scott has accomplished quite a bit he was even featured in Fast Company as the “networking expert”. Yeah imagine that!

What about Larry King’s suspenders? Is here another reason for them?

To bring this idea back to our Caribbean community, recently my boi, Mr Get Bizi Browne told me of an interview he heard with 2 of our loved local Bajan entertainers Pong and Contone. They are known primarily for the comedy that they bring through song and the comical performances.
The 2 of them stated in the interview “We don’t plug out! We always plug in” translated into plain English – “We don’t unplug we are always plugged in.”
It is a very creative and funny way for them to state that they don’t put on an act when they grace the stage. What you see on the stage is the same thing you get when you meet them off stage.
Pong and Contone have enjoyed good favour with the Bajan audience since they burst on the scene a few years ago. They consistently kept their special brand of raw and real comedy going over the last few years. They have several hit tunes between them and they are showing no signs of slowing down.
They are good at what they do and it has alot to do with the fact that they don’t “Plug out”, they always “Plug in” – lol.

Think about it because it could be the difference between success and failure!

You have a million things going on right now and all in different projects. This might seem like a real simple way to look at the situation but, here is a big time. Do it now!
Create a bias for just getting things done now, or where you have to work with other people people make sure you have a bias to making it easy for them to do it now too.

Do it now. Take some time now and do it. If you sit down to discuss a project, make sure its not just a meeting. Make it into a mini group session and make sure project plans are completed and ready to be sent in email to everyone involved. If there is something that you need to communicate with other people outside the meeting. Sit down and type it out the same time.

Do it now, give yourself the gift of not having to add another thing to your to do list at the end of every converstion, meeting or personal brain storming session.

Do it now!

As you know I define myself of course as an Online Marketer and Web 2.0 Consultant, I would advise that you take the time to understand the role that the internet is playing within the industry. I would like for you to take some time to recognise that the game is changing. The music itself, the recorded track or album is not longer a product that is paid for. Pain is weakness leaving the body!

In our beloved Caribbean, summer is a big, big deal. Our Caribbean Community hosts several major festivals and Carnivals around the world during this time, the big ones being Vincy Mas,  St. Lucia Carnival, Crop Over (Barbados), Antigua Carnival, ATI (Jamaica), Reggae Sumfest (Jamaica), Great Fete Weekend (Trinidad), Caribana (Toronto), Spice Mas (Grenada) and more!

We all love the festivities from connecting with old friends, meeting new people or wining to the latest riddim. Summer is the time that we taste and enjoy many of the  true blessings of our Caribbean Heritage.

I have been wondering though, how will technology, especially social media, affect summer  in the Caribbean Community this year. To get even more specific, how will Twitter and Facebook affect summer this year? Last year, I wrote on my most referenced posts - Facebook Impact On Caribbean Entertainment. I am wondering now about this summer!

In a recent post, I spoke about Twitter and its core strength being speed and immediacy. Twitter is all about the now. Facebook’s recent homepage upgrade makes the latest things immediately available to us. Facebook has become all about the here and now.
In short, keeping track of someone’s facebook or twitter you might be able to consistently answer “What’s up” to one of the most common questions we all ask.

An interesting development is the crazy level of adoption of BlackBerries in the region. It is now common place for the average person to have a smartphone, and its even more common for people to update their facebook or twitter directly from their phones as they go through the day. Many of us can now share our latest and greatest experiences using facebook and twitter.  The question still remains, how might this impact summer in our Caribbean Community? hmmmm.

I think that one obvious way is that it might affect is in the music we hear over the air waves. Imagine last year’s hit Tempa Wine by Machel Montano and Patrice Roberts (according to the BoomTribe Top Ten Caribbean Countdown) might be remixed this year to …..

I can see it now masquerades dressed like the blue chick like outfit jumping down the road … twitter wining! lol –  there might not be a remix planned, but it is a good thought! I would have to  sit down with the producer Dwain “Dwaingerous Antrobus and see how likely that is to happen.

But for real, Let’s get serious -

I have had the experience of blogging live from events over the last year, and the idea of being able to watch the masses from around the Caribbean Community doing these same kind of updates is really facinating to me. I mean I have gotten very good response to my live updates. Imagine it! Information will now be able to island hop at a rapid pace with several people being able to do these kinds of updates. Some interesting conversations might also develop for example - I was at an event about a month ago tweeting & updating my facebook status saying that Anthony B was closing a show in Barbados. My friend Amala in St. Lucia responded saying that Barrington LevY was closing a show in Lucia.

Imagine if the Twitter and Facebook conversations be like this or even a bit more involved we could have messages like.

• Who is going to Wet Fete this year?
• not me, the VIP for Wet Fete at US $ 300 - that is too expensive!
• well for me I’m going to one event this season. I pay one price and see all the big acts on one stage. Going to buy my ticket now
• Why would I really pay US $500 for my costume not to fit?
• that happened to me too which band are you in?
• (Mas Band Name) Is sold out?
• Who is at __________ event ? Did it flop fa real?
• Yes, its a huge flop I am leaving now.
• Cha I was just about to leave home to come down
• Lime at my house now bring a drink if you are coming?

I see the promoters amoung us twitching … Promoters, it is a double edge sword, the word can spread across the Caribbean Community that your event has flopped or its the hottest event ever.  It is really something to consider. These updates and conversations might mean that you have to play the game a alot more honestly. Maybe this year you might treat us a little better and make less claims untrue claims in your ads. Could this be the year that we don’t have to listen any of the following phrases?

e.g.

This is the biggest fete for the year.
The best event you will ever go to.
The most creative concept ever …

Your days of superlatives might be just be numbered. Personally,  I am paying very close attention to my use of superlatives myself. Its not just superlatives but don’t make any false promises, it could really hurt you. Play the game honestly you focus on your customers especially the loyal ones and be sure to treat them well and ensure that they have a good time. They will tweet about your great product or service without having to be forced or even help clear up misinformation some people are putting out there.

Some very interesting things might happen this summer simply because people can share information so much more quickly, almost instantaneously via Twitter and Facebook.

Now for those of you with your own business or those who are intending to make some money this summer. It might make sense that in your marketing meetings you discuss how you will join in the conversation on Twitter and Facebook and truly connect with your market and your customers.

Note I said JOIN the conversation, not shout at people like you do in your radio ad!

I am sure you want to reward your biggest fans, those people who believe in you and ur product and recommends you to others.
Now, Twitter and Facebook are good places to find out who these fans are. Twitter and Facebook can also be used to make an example of your biggest genuine fans publicly by rewarding them tickets to the next show. Imagine the satifaction of reading several tweets or Facebook status messages – Going to Soca Monarch compliments (insert our brand name here).

Word of mouth marketing just became so much more powerful, Facebook and Twitter now allows your words to travel around the Caribbean Community at breakneck paste.

It is going to be interesting to see it all unfolds and want lessons we will learn this summer.

I encourage you to play your part not just for your business or professional life but share your experiences with your friends and build up this Caribbean Community of ours. Never before have we been able to share information like this in the Caribbean Community. You tweets and status mesages are powerful tools, which can greatly enhance your summer,  my summer experience and the rest of the Caribbean Community. We just have to use it.

Blackberry Storm 9500

I have been storing up my points to write this blog for you for just under 2 weeks now. I wanted to make sure I put the Storm through some real working conditions, so that I can validate or dispel all the hype and fanfare around the device.

Well let me say right now, I did not really care to do any kind of durability test with my Storm. Peter stated during my interview with him – “Durability is one of the tenants of RIM”. He there procceded to throw the Storm in the air and let it drop Smack! on the carpet. (watch interview).
Now that is enough for me in the department of the durability testing. No I am not attempting any others! lol. If that is not enough for you, take a look at this video where this dude stratches the storm with a knife.

Let me get the main point off my chest fast. Let me get real and honest here with you. I had mixed feelings about the Storm because over the past few months I’ve fallen in love with the wifi on my BlackBerry Bold. The wifi on the Bold allows me to -

- Play international radio using flycast – www.flycast.fm

- Download podcasts using – podcast trapper - http://www.versatilemonkey.com/

- Stream Live videos using qik – www.qik.com/coreykgraham

- streaming video from youtube and other video services

- fast browsing experience

- It allows me to set applications to wirelessly sync applications without fear of dropping calls especially

- My articles in viigo rss reader – www.viigo.com

- Sync my BlackBerry contacts with my Gmail contacts - http://www.google.com/mobile/blackberry/sync.html

Now I should also say that the Storm and the Bold are both primarily 3 G phones. 3G to make a long story short, is a faster network and it of course allows for my faster data rate i.e. high speed internet for the BlackBerrys, streaming video etc. Find out more on 3G here. Both phones can use data services on a 3 G network while taking calls. On a 2 G network this doesn’t happen, you can do one or the other. using the data services would mean that you will miss and or drop a few calls. It could be a real inconvenience sometimes. grrrrrr. I know from experience.

Now I am sure that the Storm is a wonderful 3G phone. However as of right now, we don’t have a 3 G Network in the Caribbean so that puts us in a spot of bother. I can’t make use of all the capabilities of the Storm.

It is possible that these 2 big marketing campaigns for the Storm by both major mobile providers in the Caribbean  (LIME and Digicel) might suggest that race is on, to roll out the better 3 G Network of the Caribbean. You never know!

Cable and Wireless announced they will be implementing a 3 G Network across the Caribbean last December when they rebranded to LIME,( more on this) so maybe the 3 G Network will be here sooner than I think, probably by next week … Time will tell.

Now with all that said, I have noticed though that the Storm doesn’t seem to drop as many calls due to data usage as previous BlackBerry devices. It uploads or emails photos (as attachments) in quick time when compared to its predecessors. Actually I would say it sends in a comparable time frame to the Bold when it is on a wifi network!

I really wish I could experience, the Storm on a 3G Network. The browser is painfully slow on this phone with the GPRS here in Barbados. Although I am sure it is not too bad in Trinidad with their Edge network.  I loaded a few pages and its good viewing the webpages in full is great, but the speed, oh gosh the speed!

I know you are thinking where is the wifi? Why doesn’t the Storm have wifi?

Well the Storm was launched exclusive some certain networks across the world. Yes all those networks had 3 G. It is my theory is that someone involved felt it was a good move to leave out the wifi out of this initial model and to force persons to purchase the Storm through a carrier and on a data plan. It would be more costly and much more of a hassle to purchase a Storm and then get it connected. It makes business sense to me. I am not surprised to be hearing rumours of a Storm 2 to be released in September which does have Wifi!

The wifi issue aside, the Storm is one of the few phones in the world which will work anywhere, it has a whopping 7 radios which translates to – anywhere in the world you go, the Storm would work. Note that the GSM phones we use in the Caribbean won’t work on certain networks e.g. CDMA, however the Storm will! 

I still want a high-speed internet connection for my  storm though, either from 3G or from Wifi. Hmmm actually I would prefer both, so that I can have an option. If I am traveling I can use wifi instead of incurring roaming charges for using the 3G network in another place.

Also as an aside Skype has announced that they will be launching Skype for BlackBerry sometime in this month May. High speed net on the Storm will be almost a must!

Touch screen
 

I know this is a big, big issue for many of us. The idea of using a touch screen instead of our beloved BlackBerry Qwerty keyboards.  It was a really big thing for me too. I am pretty fast with the regular BlackBerry keyboard, I can almost write ideas and thoughts as they form, but using the touch screen keyboard? I was not sure. I had my reservations about this keyboard.

Now first off the Surepress technology is a elegantly simple and brilliant innovation. I give the creative genius behind it at RIM a pact on the back. What is SurePress? It is pretty simple. When using the Storm if you tap the screen lightly it will highlight whatever option is under your finger. Now to select that highlighted option, you will have to press the screen in, and “click it” and the Storm will open up that particular option.

This gives you a lot more control when using the phone. You actually highlight a letter before you actually “press” it.  I think it is typical BlackBerry in my humble opinion, elegantly simple solution to enhance the user experience and make life easier.

Typing on the Storm for the first few days was still REALLY hard for me. I mean I started to think about using the Bold again for typing. However, to my surprise by the 3rd day though I started to get of the hang of keyboard. I didn’t expect it to happen so fast! I was seeing I saw light at the end of the tunnel for the Storm and I. I put more effort into practicing typing on the Storm, and I really have improved a lot. I am at about 80% confidence with the typing on the Storm now. I am not sure I am ready to jump to making notes on the Storm in a meeting but I am getting there.

I would tell those hardcore BlackBerry users out there that if you get a Storm give yourself some time to get into it. It is a big change to move to a completely touch screen interface. Give yourself some space to learn it.

I made the change from the thumbwheel on my 7100g and my 8700g to the pearl on my Pearl and Bold. It was a bit of change but after a couple hours was all sorted out because the way your interacted with the interface was very similar. Most of the rules where the same. The jump from the Bold to the Storm’s touch screen is much bigger jump so I would strongly advise that you give yourself some time to learn the interface.

I would close by saying that, I think that if RIM puts out a touch screen phone with a keyboard it will probably be their most coveted device yet! If it happens, just remember I called it!

Voice Quality

Now the next big thing for me was the voice quality – it has SIGNIFICANTLY improved. My bro from another mama was raving about it. He said he could hear me much clearer no matter where I went. I could be next to a busy road with cars up and down and the person on the other line can hear me very clearly. A lot better than with my previous Berrys. I can also hear them a whole lot better too. I marvel at the call quality constantly! This is great for me when I have to make calls from big events and concerts. This is a big highlight on the Storm for me. Smartphones are not known for their voice quality generally, so this is big points for the Storm. I imagine this would be great for persons who work in noisy environment e.g. factories plants of on construction sites. It is great!

The phone does get pretty hot on extended calls though, so that is a little concern.

GPS

The GPS is much faster than on the Bold, once you pull out the storm and open google maps, the GPS is on, has already locked in on your position. On the Bold this would take a good 2 -3 mins at best! Most of the times when you want to use the GPS you want it to pop up right away and give you the information you need.

For those of you are unfamiliar with Google Maps on the BlackBerry. The GPS gets your position within 3 m of your location, that’s about the size of a car. In the satellite view you can see buildings, roads, large trees and more, around you. All the details you find on google maps is available to you on the phone, road names and landmarks etc.  The cool part is that if you start moving the GPS will move in real time with you and also point the direction you are moving on Google Maps. There is actually an arrow showing your direction.

Rex Wireless Apps

The next big things for me were my RexWireless applications, i.e. TodoMatrix, AlertMatrix and IdeaMatrix. I have written about Todomatrix and Altermatrix.Ideamatrix I have not written a post about, however I use this just as much or even more than the other 2. It is Ideamatrix I use to take notes from meetings and write my blog posts. I am writing on it right now! The big thing for me about IdeaMatrix, is that it allows you to store your notes in categories and also add more tags to it. I absolutely love the fact that it automatically syncs wirelessly with my laptop. There is no forgetting to sync a note its all automatic. Once I hit save in a few minutes that note will be updated on the web and on the phone.

All these apps have been upgraded to fit the storm’s interface and they are a breeze to use once you take the time to figure them out, of course . There is nothing more to say. Its RexWireless those guys are on top of their game. You should check them out – www.rexwireless.com

Blackberry App World

No access to BlackBerry App World, I was excited about browsing and looking at the different applications out there, however we don’t yet have access in the Caribbean so that is the story for now. No access.

Camera And Screen

I liked the camera on my Bold but the camera on the Storm inspires me.

If you don’t know, I am into photography. I am not as active as I once was, but the passion is still there. The Storm’s camera is

• 3.2 Megapixels
• auto focus, this helps a lot with getting a sharp image with the things you might be in focus in your pic.
• Better Low light Performance – one of the problems I had with the cameras on mobile phone’s in general, is that they don’t do very well in low light and yet many of the pics we want to get are in low light conditions. All those blurry and dark pics you see around, that’s the reason. The Storm’s camera can take great pictures in not so well light rooms.
• Incremental zooming, i.e. it goes from 1x to 1.1x, 1.2x up to 2.0 x. On the Bold and Pearl, it was either 1 x 2x or 3 x.

You don’t believe me that the camera inspires me? I have started something I call BlackBerry Photography. It is a new hobby, challenging myself to use my creative juices to overcome the limitations of this cameras, and get some interesting photos. Take a look, straight from the phone with no editing

New Fruit From Broken Dreams

The screen is excellent, I mean its great, the movie trailer on the phone is excellent!  Now the think that freaked me out the most was that I got a video from a Nokia E65 and the quality was amazing! Video in mobile phones is really, really improving.

If you are going to be watching videos on the Storm you will need a big MicroSD card. The Storm ships with an 8 GB Card and that is of course upgradeable. I wonder how

The storm ships with an 8 GB card I am not complaining. There is not much more to say. It is 8 GB and it can be upgraded to 16 GB.

New Charging Connection

One thing that really shocked me in a not so positive way, is that they change the connection to the charger! This is a big dagger in my heart because, all the BlackBerry’s I have had, had the same charger so chargers were always in abundance. there is one at home, one at work, one in my bag and then to add to it the connection used to sync the BlackBerry also charges it, so that is another way to charge it. The interesting thing is that this connection between the BlackBerry and the laptop is the same for digital cameras so, if push came to shove I could pick up some charge using the connection for a digital camera. Basically no matter how my schedule changed I could get my phone charged.

Now with the Storm I only have 2 options the charger and the connection to the laptop. It is ALOT less convenient. I am going to have to have to source some more chargers. I am a bit spoiled.

OTA Software Updates

I couldn’t test this because there were no new updates were available for the storm, but I know alot of people will appreciate this. One stop update with no cables or downloading online etc?

In summary I would say the Storm is a good phone, give me some 3G and I will probably say its a great phone. It is a step up for sure and getting used to the typing is taking some doing. Overall it is a step up from the Bold and of course its missing your beloved keyboard.

 There is a saying that states – you will be same from year to year, dependent on the books that you read and the people that you interact with.

Now for me time spent waiting in line at the bank or waiting on delayed flights are now far more productive. Alrite here is an interesting fact to prove this – believe it or not, more than 70 % of my blogs were written on my BlackBerry and about 40 % of them are posted directly from the BlackBerry to my blog! And imagine that I am known primarily as a blogger. My BlackBerry has become a critical blogging tool because whenever the inspiration hits I write and share it with you.

It is not just about the device but the company in the last few years have been able to consistently grow and dominate the market worldwide, you got to respect that.

Now you can imagine how very grateful I was to be invited to the Official Launch of the BlackBberry Storm in Barbados. I was glad to be able to get the information directly from RIM Representatives and being able to ask them questions myself. I love Google and all, but somehow I rather be at the press conference. Oh and I am not going to pretend. I have never been the launch or press conference of any kind of technology before, no conference or trade show under my belt and I am hoping this would be the first of many more.

I was impressed with how organized it the conference was, and the very nice treatment I received, there were more than enough representatives to answer the questions I had or to point me in the direction to get them answered.

At the end of the conference I was presented with all the info in hard copy and on a 4 GB jump drive. No, no, the information from the conference did not take up 4 GB of space.  The drive was essentially a gift! I definitely appreciated this after having a buffet lunch and really hit the spot.

Peter Gould – VP of sales for the Caribbean and Latin America did well with his presentation and answered all questions, at least the ones he was allowed to answer. lol. He knew his stuff, with 10 years at RIM, having had different positions in the company and seeing the evolution of the company he was fit for the job.

Now BlackBerry Storm Devices were in abundance to toy around with throughout the conference. I thoroughly enjoyed this! I took the opportunity to hold on to one and check out the different features. Now to top it all off, I was given a little black box to take home after my name was pulled from the draw. Yes people. My own Storm!

Have you ever seen ants ‘talking to each other’? They have a very short ‘talk-time’, lol. However they make sure they say what they have to say in the shortest possible time, to keep every ant on the same page. It was in this moment that it hit me! The ants had twitter, a long time ago. We are now catching up!

What Is Twitter?
It is a communication platform that has the ability to keep everyone on the same page in real time!
Lol, truth be told, I just made that up. I wished I’d been able to decipher this from the infinite wisdom of Mother Nature herself. However I have yet to become that man, lol.
The real story is the insight from a blog post I had read. Yes it is important to read blogs! I believe it was Seth Godin who described this concept to me, and I got it!
Twitter is primarily about speed and immediacy. It was a simple way to keep people informed with you and for you to keep informed with them. I am sure that those of you who use Twitter have experienced this.

How Twitter Fits In Our Lives? – I finally got it
We are now able to share special days, thoughts, emotions, ideas and the events of our life with each other no matter our geographic location. We can share this stuff with friends as it happens! The option to share with the world it right at our finger tips.
In some cases you might be able to share key points from speeches while you are still listening or you if you are lucky enough you can break, breaking news before the news or mainstream media.

Another Perspective on Tweeting a.k.a Status Update
Another way to look at it is that Twitter is really blogging but with 140 chars. Take a look at one of my previous posts – Why Start A Blog?. The reach of twitter allows you to magnify your voice. Even if you have very few followers persons can easily share your tweets, by “retweeting” it on their twitter.
Twitter is of course the most popular service for this kind of thing, but it is no different from other social networks with their status updates (e.g. Facebook, Myspace, LinkedIn etc)

CG 2.0 Starts To Tweet
Now with a very deliberate effort I created meaningful tweets and status messages which kept people up to date with the thoughts and experiences I had been having. I also included some entertainment related breaking news – as I am often privy to such information.
The result was that those persons close to me actually paid a far greater attention to my tweets and status updates. It was a way to check up on me. In some cases if they tried to contact me, and didn’t get me, they checked my tweets or status messages.
What really surprised me, is when I met up with few different people I had not been in contact in years and they were very much aware of what was the latest and greatest thing with me. These people had never commented on my updates but they were just as interested in what I have to say!

I saw this video and I immediately thought of LIAT or Caribbean “budget” airline. magine the endless possibilities as LIAT fly us around the Caribbean!
Think about heading to Trinidad Carnival on LIAT and listening to the socarised version of the flight accouncements. Let me tell you there are several Carnivals and Festivals in the Caribbean and Cricket is also another big attraction.
How many Festivals and Carnivals are there in the Caribbean you think? Well LIAT has 22 destinations and each country has just about 2 major festivals! Don’t believe me?

What about getting an Artiste from one Island and having them do a small performance on a plane? LIAT doesn’t have a TV! I say live entertainment!I know its only 20 people, but its an intimate setting with people from all walks of life, and from around the globe! LIAT gets some in-flight entertainment and the artiste gets to fly to another island.

Wait hold on, the ideas are flowing. The artiste can spend a few hours in a neighbouring island, produce a track with a a producer or Artiste from that Island and then head back to their homeland. And all the while the artiste is twittering and updating his/her facebook, myspace and bigging up LIAT to their fans.  Imagine the song then becomes a hit in both islands, LIAT can certianly leverage that to encourage more travel! Imagine if it then turns into a movement, there will be certainly alot of benefits for LIAT there, as lasting friendships and business relationships develop.

Look at that! A simple idea can help to grow a truly Caribbean Community, via the Music Industry.

Now that is just 1 industry,  how can this idea be repeated in other industries?

Please by all means share your ideas, the powers that be at LIAT might just be reading this. Trust me it really is not that far fetched! 

Actually come to think of it, would not not be a good core strategy for LIAT to incorporate into its current plan?
