Today, I found yet another reason why I prefer discussing tech topics on FriendFeed over another popular social site, Twitter.

FriendFeed’s search is a big reason why you should move your Twitter conversations there. The above example shows the value in retaining search data. Twitter search only goes back a few days (I don’t know how many exactly, but it’s not that much) while FriendFeed retains much more data.

If you find yourself in need of data retrieval, I hope your data resides on FriendFeed. So how do you take advantage of this? It’s actually quite simple. You simply post a new FriendFeed entry and “CC Twitter”.

This will broadcast your your new topic to all your Twitter followers, and invite them to join the conversation on FriendFeed with a link. Some people hate this because they have to click through and go to yet another web page. Part of me understands this frustration in this “right now, do it yesterday” atmosphere, but the payoff is tremendous. Not only do you get a rich, single threaded conversation out of the deal, but the contents will be searchable a year from now. You can’t say the same about Twitter.

Robert Scoble has championed this technique for quite some time and is getting a lot of ridicule from his massive Twitter follower list. I believe he has a valid point. Your data is lost on Twitter, it isn’t on FriendFeed. It’s that simple.

What do you think? Comment here or on FriendFeed and it’ll all show up

Pun intended.

So Palm had it’s big day yesterday (June 6th) with their release of the Palm Pre and early reports are that they had a good day in terms of sales. Most stores were sold out by noon and others followed later in the day. Early reviews of the Palm Pre are generally positive and the community is rallying behind Palm in a big way.

We’ve also had some controversy surrounding the Pre already! First, we found out that the Palm Pre is recognized as an iPod in iTunes for synchronization. A lot of us don’t think Apple will like this, especially since a lot of former Apple engineers worked on this phone. Some high profile technology experts have gotten into it surrounding ethics and integrity surrounding receiving review units. Right or wrong, Palm gets free press out of all of this.

Press is good, until you’re faced with an Apple keynote. Even though it’s a Steve Job-less keynote (maybe), tomorrow’s kickoff of Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) is expected to bring a lot of fresh technology news. Now if Apple didn’t have a particular phone in their lineup, I think Palm wouldn’t have to worry about the possible buzz kill surrounding the Pre. But alas, we have a confirmed release of iPhone 3.0 software (either tomorrow or later this month) and a ton of rumors surrounding new iPhone hardware.

On top of all the coolness that’s coming from the iPhone’s software revision, we’re hearing rumors about the new iPhone hardware that include:

Video recording capability

Front and rear camera

Larger Capacity (32GB)

You gotta love the rumor mill before these Apple events. They almost have the ability to kill Palm’s hype on their own. Palm has their hands full. Apple still has the mind share on the “cool” smartphone market, but I believe Palm has what it takes to steal some of it. A new Apple phone 2 days after your release could be insurmountable.

Will tomorrow’s announcements squash Palm’s buzz? We will have to wait and see. I can’t wait.

It boggles the mind.

I use social networks to share what I like. Sometimes people like what they see or hear and they decide to keep up with me. I post news links, blog posts, video posts, podcast posts, general thoughts, rambles, LOL cats, tech deals, and even the newest shiny social network tool. By doing all this, people follow me. They follow me on Twitter, they follow me on FriendFeed, they follow my blogs, and they follow my shows.

Periodically, I’ll increase my output on a topic I like such as sports, video games, and that newest shiny social network tool. This is what I get in return:

“Bwana, why are you posting so much?”
“Bwana, do you realize, you’ve posted 6 links in the last hour?”
“Bwana, are you going to go on and on about the nfl/nba/ncaa again?”
“Bwana, please stop tweeting so much”
“Bwana, would you stop talking about football so much”
“Bwana, please stop flooding my stream”
“Bwana, enough with the ________ links, we get it already!”

If I post something that annoys, bothers, or irks you, then why in the world are you still following me? Why do you put up with it? Think about it. If I were walking down the street with you following me and I decide to fart continuously for 3 hours, wouldn’t you get out of the way? Farts stink man! Move! If you don’t leave, you’re choosing to inhale the wondrous foul fumes of my farts. I say farts because apparently it’s something you don’t want to be around.

There’s the door ——–>

This is my thinking with the uproar about the Spymaster craze on Twitter. The almighty Leo Laporte decided to call me out on This Week In Tech, basically fingering me as “one of those Spymaster spammers”. I replied on the on the TWiT FriendFeed thread “Don’t worry Leo, I toned down my tweet settings quite a bit” But then, I got to thinking: I’m not tweeting that much and even if I was, why won’t he just unfollow me?

Spymaster is a game.
It’s fun.
People like it.

It utilizes the social reach of Twitter to encourage game play amongst friends and strangers. I did a review on EatWillGrow for iPhone which allows you to Tweet your high score, and it’s an effective mechanism to challenge someone. It’s the same principle here. Gamers like to talk trash. Gamers like to share their experiences with friends and strangers. Gamers are not afraid to tell you about a game they love.

I’m a gamer. I game. I play games. I play games with other people. I want to share some spymaster experiences with people on Twitter. If that annoys you, please, by all means, UNFOLLOW ME! Get from behind me! Stop reading what I do! Please! You can choose to unfollow the Bwana Spymaster spammer and be free from the “spam”.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Leo for calling me out in front of his listeners. I respect his opinion on the matter. I actually hope he unfollowed me on Twitter (and hid me on FriendFeed) as a result of my “spam”. If he didn’t, then I got to wonder why he puts up with it.

In case you’re wondering,I’ve posted a total of 11 spymaster tweets over the span of 2 days. Twitter search: “from:Bwana #spymaster”

I know, it’s brutal. I also post my video game activity using Raptr and GamerDNA. Spymaster shouldn’t be a huge change. Don’t blame me because Twitter’s filtering sucks. You got two choices: 1. Put up with it 2. Unfollow.

If you want the short version of this blog post: I don’t care what you think. It does annoy me when you complain [loudly] about what you don’t want to hear. It makes me want to unfollow you so I don’t have to put up with the complaining. Why won’t you just leave?

It’s your opinion for a reason, not mine. I’m not going to change what I do because you don’t like it. Get over it. Get over yourselves and take action. Unfollow, block, do whatever you feel is needed and you won’t hurt my feelings one bit. Yes, I said it.

Now, it’s time to assassinate some of these wanna-be spies.

*** Update: You can opt-out of Spymaster invites if your “friends” are blasting you with them. (Again, why are you following them again?)

Having come from Ustream.TV, I found Justin.TV to be a different live streaming experience than what I was used to. Thanks to the help of seasoned users such as jrblaze, I was able to create a decent channel of my own. I used Justin.TV in the past, but I felt loyal to Ustream since they integrated IRC so well. Since Ustream has dumped IRC and I continue to have issues with them, I decided to go Justin.TV for a while and see how things pan out.

I’ve been impressed so far.

It isn’t the feature set (which is impressive) that intrigues me, but it’s the stability. On Ustream, I couldn’t go a week without issue. My stream would crash, lose connectivity, or fail in the middle of a crucial recording. I haven’t had one issue on Justin.TV yet. Not one. This is why when I heard about Justin.TV pro accounts, I decided to try it for a month. These guys have put together great technology that seems to work very well. I’ll gladly give them $10 based on the couple of weeks of stable usage I’ve gotten out of the deal.

I know the main features pro accounts gives you is less ads, gifts, and an attention grabbing “pro” tag in chat, (the attention is not always good) but my main motivation behind buying a pro account was to thank Justin.TV for easing the pain that Ustream.TV has caused me. I love Ustream, and the guys over there are great, but I consistently had issues that I don’t have at Justin.TV with the same exact hardware. I’m hoping Ustream works out their issues, because I’d love to return, but for now, I’m happily streaming at Justin.TV as a pro user. Come by and check me out. I’m going to give the Pro account a month to see how it all works out and I’ll decide on whether I want to keep it after then. For now, I’m a happy camper over at Justin.TV.

Do you think you could follow that? A lot of people see that and are intimidated. I believe this is going to be obstacle that the “real-time web” is going to have to surpass. I’m glad that tools like FriendFeed are enabling us to search this massive amount of information for the stuff we care about. Read my post on how to use FriendFeed filters (now called “Saved Searches”) for more information.

Let’s just hope the “real-time” web is not faster than “realistic” time. At some point, it becomes overwhelming and a waste of time if not implemented properly. It’s going to be interesting to watch this whole thing grow. What do you think? Is this real-time web feasible?

T-Mobile was gracious enough to supply me with a G1 review unit. I’ve been playing with it for about a week now and I’ve seen and learned quite a bit. A lot of people are curious about how it compares to the iPhone’s experience. It’s a hard question to answer directly, so I’m going to be producing a series of videos on Bwana.TV (my video blog) about the Android experience and some of the applications that are available. Unfortunately, I’m not able to purchase any applications since the review unit is tied to a separate account, but I’ll do what I can amongst the free applications.

So stay tuned to Bwana.TV for a bunch of T-Mobile G1 videos, and how it compares to the iPhone experience.

Welcome to the new Bwana.org (DNS changes still propagating). For months I’ve been putting up with sporadic uptime due to increased traffic and an overworked virtual private server at Dreamhost. I’ve switched providers to Mosso (The Rackspace Cloud), and am utilizing their Cloud Sites product. Yes, this is a more expensive solution than what I’m currently paying at Dreamhost, but I’m a big believer in “you get what you pay for”. I considered a lot more options out there and what drew me to Mosso was it’s great reputation and scaling solution. I also had a good conversation with Robert La Gesse of Mosso who took the time to answer a lot of my questions. As a result of the more expensive solution, I’m opening up advertising on my sites for anyone interested. Email me for more information.

We’ll see how things go here at Mosso, and I hope you all enjoy the new look and feel. I figured since I’m moving from a long time relationship with Dreamhost (since 2005!), I’d accompany it with a new look and feel. Thanks everyone for your patience and let me know if you experience any kind of issues with the new site. I look forward to providing more content without the fear of server death.

Often, I get asked by my readers/listeners/viewers which is the “best” console: Sony Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii, or Microsoft’s Xbox 360. I wrote my thoughts about deciding which console is best for you back in December, and I think some people benefited from it. When it comes to gaming, I’ve noticed that it’s extremely difficult to give a non-biased recommendation to someone else. It seems to be proportional to the passion gamers have for their platforms and titles. Take a look at this little tidbit: I made a 17 second video which asks the question, “Which is better, Xbox 360 or PS3?”. I didn’t give an answer, but I gave this:

The result is over 200 comments and 1000 views in less than 24 hours. What does that say? Gamers are passionate about what they love. I find that this passion is driven by their wants and preferences, which I call selfishness. I know some of you are already offended, but I’m sorry to say, everyone is selfish at some point. It’s the truth.

So are gamers selfish when they are quick to say which console is the “best”? Note they don’t usually say is “best for me”, but the “best” period. Here are the classic lines:

Console X has the best games

Console Y has the best online game play

Console Z has the best multimedia experience

Console A gives you more bang for the buck

People will look you straight in the eye, and tell you that these are facts. Yes, they call them facts. Note that if you look at those reasons carefully, they are highly based on opinions and personal preferences. They are hardly factual. How can someone claim they are factual when it’s obviously opinionated? Selfishness. Wow, I can see the steam rising from your heads from here. Watch how Kyle from South Park breaks down how selfishness can warp your reality (Warning: adult language and typical South Park):

Sometimes, I think it can get this extreme for some gamers when it comes to consoles. Their opinions are so valuable that they become factual in their mind and it becomes a passionate, pointless argument. Hear me gamers: Everyone doesn’t think like you. Step outside of your selfish world of perfectness and realize that you are not the center of the universe. It’s OK for someone to love their Xbox 360. It’s OK for someone to love their PS3. It’s OK for someone to love their (Nintendo) Wii.

For those of us who are familiar with the term, “real-time web”, we saw this as a positive step towards it becoming a reality. I’ve already blogged about ways to truly harness the power of real-time FriendFeed, and this new beta emboldens my tips. While there is much controversy on the implementation of the feature, I found myself enthralled by something else they added: filters.
As many have realized, FriendFeed provides a rich source of information for all kinds of interests. Since it aggregates data from social services which originate from all over the web, there is little that you can’t find on FriendFeed. Now with filters, FriendFeed has empowered us to save powerful queries for later usage. While these filters are not real-time like other parts of the site, they will be eventually (and what a day that will be)

Here’s my video walkthrough of the FriendFeed beta:

What is a FriendFeed filter? My loose definition is that it’s a set of defined criteria configured by the user in order to obtain desired data from FriendFeed. The criteria looks like the following:

Name - This is the desired name of the FriendFeed Filter

Include entries from - This is the source of the data you wish filter. The choices are all friendFeed users, your friend and group subscriptions, a specific pre-defined friendfeed list of friends/groups, and names of friendfeed users and groups.

Keyword/quality filters - This is the filter criteria of the source data. There are several fields to utilize, but it should be noted that the “contain the words” field can utilize any FriendFeed search query string. I’ll explain later.

I found myself playing with these filters for most of the day yesterday and had a blast. I want to share with you some of the more powerful ones, but before I do, I will tell you the best way to create new filters. The basic steps are fairly straight forward:

Perform a search on the beta FriendFeed site - First, go here: http://beta.friendfeed.com/search/advanced and fill in the desired criteria. Perform the search and massage the search as needed. Some searches can be improved by updating the number of required comments and likes, so play with that a little bit.

Save the search as a filter - After a search is performed, you’ll notice a link that reads “make a filter”

Click the “make a filter” link

Update the filter name and adjust as needed - Change the filter name to something more descriptive than the default text. Click Save filter to commit the filter

This is a basic, yet powerful approach to creating filters. Once you become more advanced, you’ll recognize the search syntax and perform boolean operands. Here are some of my favorite FriendFeed searches that you can save as filters by using the technique above. I’ll start with the search string, explain what it means, and provide a hyperlink (note: most of these search ALL of FriendFeed:

You get the idea? You can get very creative with these filters. I highly recommend you also review the advanced search operators as it will allow you to venture further:

In the latest iPhone SDK, the developer agreement (which must be agreed to) states that jailbreaking is now prohibited:

(e)You will not, through use of the Apple Software, services or otherwise, create any Application or other program that would disable, hack or otherwise interfere with the Security Solution, or any security, digital signing, digital rights management, verification or authentication mechanisms implemented in or by the iPhone operating system software, iPod touch operating system software, this Apple Software, any services or other Apple software or technology, or enable others to do so; and

    (f) Applications developed using the Apple Software may only be distributed if selected by Apple (in its sole discretion) for distribution via the App Store or for limited distribution on Registered Devices (ad hoc distribution) as contemplated in this Agreement.

As I stated previously, this whole brouhaha has been accelerated by piracy of iPhone and iPod Touch applications. This is just another step Apple is taking to thwart jailbreaking. While many want to blame Apple for this, I still blame the pirates.

Update: I’m receiving reports that this wording has been in the agreement for quite a while and may not specifically ban jailbreaking.

Update 2: TUAW confirms the verbiage has been there since October. Nothing to see here, apologies for the confusion. (I hate you Ars)

Today, I watched the Apple Live Event concerning the iPhone 3.0 software. Many things were discussed at the event as you can read online, but here are my reactions as I watched today:

Now it’ll be interesting to see all the *new* reasons the haters will say the iPhone is garbage. Here’s to you, haters!

Let’s look at iPhone 2.x and what absolutely needs to be improved. My first thought was Mobile Safari which is clearly the weakest part of the experience, and I posted it on Twitter:

Here’s my list of “must-haves” for iPhone 3.0:

Mobile Safari stability - For me, my wife, and many, many others that actively use Mobile Safari on their iPhone, we find that it crashes pretty much every single session. Now if you stay inside of iPhone optimized websites, the probability of a crash decreases, but if that were the case, it’d be just like any other mobile browser. Apple should absolutely address this in 3.0.

SMS improvements - Basic features in SMS are missing which is kind of embarrassing. SMS forwarding should be included in iPhone 3.0 at a minimum and maybe even MMS. I’m hoping they merge SMS with Mail.app and give us a Pinger like application which includes social apps like Facebook and Twitter. But that’s really REALLY reaching for the stars and we’re keeping it real in this post

Better organization of applications - The longer you own an iPhone, the more applications you’ll obtain. Given the incredible amount of applications available, the current pagination system is reaching a wall. Usability becomes a bit clumsy as you have to scroll through 10 pages of applications and there needs to be some sort of organization/categorization/folder system in iPhone 3.0

Background notifications/processes - As I stated on TWiT 186, Apple absolutely has to make a statement regarding the status of their promised background notification system shown in 2008. Tomorrow, Apple either has to announce plans to keep it, scrap it, or discuss other alternatives. Right now, it’s embarrassing for them since it stands as vaporware at the moment

I believe these four absolutely have to be addressed in some form or fashion before any new bells and whistles are added. As for the copy/paste ninjas, I’ve never used copy/paste on a mobile device and don’t foresee myself using it if it’s implemented. I wish the noise was around the instability of what’s there instead of the missing features.

We’ll see tomorrow after Apple lets us know what they’re going to do.

The other concern I have is moving the controls to the earphones. Normally this wouldn’t bother me, but these are the only controls, which means you must use Apple’s headphones. Not good. I’m sure these will sell, but I’m thinking this new model may not be for me. I had been considering a shuffle as an alternative to my iPhone for rugged tasks. (Yard work, home repair, and the like). Something tells me Apple may not be sure about it either since they are still offering the old model. A rarity with Apple and iPods.

On the plus side, the capacity increase to 4GB is welcomed. I use close to 4GB of space for music on my iPhone, so that would draw me in. The VoiceOver feature sounds clumsy, but I’ll reserve judgement for that until I can actually use it. With VoiceOver, the iPod Shuffle supports multiple playlists, but the process doesn’t sound easy.

If you get a new iPod Shuffle, let me know your thoughts in the comments.
