DiFranza, a professor of family medicine and community health at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. "It's very effective at reducing the number of kids who smoke."

Since 1992, states have been required to prohibit the sale and distribution of tobacco to minors. But in 1996, the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration issued a regulation that, in essence, put some teeth into the legislation that requires states to pass and enforce so-called no-sale laws.

Though there has been some debate about the effectiveness of the congressional mandate, a growing body of evidence demonstrates that enforcing existing laws reduces the number of adolescent smokers.

DiFranza and his colleagues analyzed data from a 2003 survey of 16,244 adolescents, nearly all 15 to 17 years old, to obtain information on smoking habits. In addition, they looked at state-collected data on merchants' compliance with anti-tobacco laws. Then they correlated the data, taking into account such factors as cigarette prices, restaurant smoking policies, anti-smoking campaigns and demographic information that included age, gender, race, ethnicity and parents' education level.

The researchers found that, as merchants more diligently enforced the ban on tobacco sales to minors and as the price of cigarettes rose, the likelihood of teens smoking dropped.

Improved compliance with the laws from 1997 to 2003 was credited with about a 21 percent decline in the likelihood of a teen smoking. Price increases for a pack of cigarettes during that time reduced the odds by about 47 percent, the study found.

The results appear online April 17 in the journal BMC Public Health.

"Cigarette smoking is a major contributor to many of the chronic diseases that we see in society today -- cardiovascular disease, cancer, dementia and other forms of cognitive decline and low birth weight," said Dr. Ted Schettler, science director at the Science & Environmental Health Network in Ames, Iowa. "And adolescent smoking increases the risk of lifelong smoking."

According to the American Lung Association, about 90 percent of smokers started before age 21, and an estimated 4.5 million U.S. adolescents smoke.

"Up until now, it's been controversial about whether all the effort put into enforcing the law has been worthwhile or not," DiFranza said. "Some people had made halfhearted efforts to obey the law, and those have not worked at reducing either the number of stores that sell tobacco to kids or the number of kids that smoke."

The finding from DiFranza's study mirrors that from a study published this month on the effect of laws targeting the sale of alcohol to minors.

In that study, states that had enacted more punitive laws -- including use-and-lose laws that allow the suspension of a driver's license for any underage alcohol violation and zero-tolerance laws that make it illegal for young people to drive with any amount of alcohol in their system -- had fewer drinking-related fatalities among teens than did states that did not have such laws. The results were published in the April 7 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

"In the past, we've had success in reducing the number of teens who smoke by enforcing these laws in communities, but this is the first study to show that it works at the national level," DiFranza said. "It's important to show that this strategy works across the whole geography of the United States, in rural and urban areas."

Schettler said that it's important to note "that many of these strategies go well beyond just advising people not to smoke and really get into more systemic public health interventions and trying to create, at the societal level, barriers to smoking."

More information
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has more on teen smoking.

Unfortunately, training in improper footwear and neglecting to stretch properly before and after activity greatly increases serious occurrences of foot and ankle injury," Ross Taubman, APMA president, said in a news release issued by his organization.

The most common way to deal with minor muscle strains or sprains is the RICE method of rest, ice, compression and elevation; however, if the injury fails to improve over a few days, one should visit a doctor, according to the association.

According to the APMA, these are the four most common springtime sporting injuries to the foot and their treatments:

Ligament sprains and bone fractures: Sprains require simple immobilization, such as wraps, for a period, while more severe sprain may later require therapy to rebuild the muscle's strength. Fractures require more stringent immobilization, such as a cast, and could take up to 10 weeks to heal.

Plantar fasciitis: This type of heel pain in a fibrous plantar fascia band of tissue may require orthotics (custom-made shoe inserts) to ease discomfort. The injury is common in baseball and softball players, and the Ringor company recently developed cleats approved of by the APMA to help reduce the incidence of this injury and others to the foot's bone and muscles.

Shin splints: Poor shock absorption or excessive foot flattening caused by footwear often can cause this swelling of the muscles connected to the shin. Stretching and strengthening can help people avoid this injury, but once it does occur, immediate use of a cold compress can reduce inflammation.

Achilles tendinitis: Pain and stiffness in the calf and swelling of the Achilles tendon can result from excessive stop-and-start motion. To prevent and treat, stretch the calf muscles slowly before and after an activity.

More information
The American Podiatric Medical Association has more about foot injuries.

For example, the devices can help many people with flat feet walk, run and stand with more comfort and less pain.

The American Podiatric Medical Association offers these suggestions for those who wear orthotics:

Choose shoes that are supportive and wide enough to comfortably accommodate your orthotics.

When shoe shopping, bring your orthotics along to try on with shoes, making sure they fit comfortably together.

Wear appropriate socks when shopping for new shoes.

Have recommended follow-ups with your podiatrist to be sure your feet and orthotics are working well together.

P. gingivalis is among the most widely existent bacteria worldwide.

The findings were to be presented April 3 in Miami at a meeting of the International & American Association for Dental Research.

The results suggest that periodontal disease might contribute to the systemic dissemination of HIV and emphasize the essential role of maintaining oral hygiene and controlling oral diseases to help prevent AIDS, according to background information in a news release from the association.

More information
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has more about HIV/AIDS.

After 180 days, there were no cardiovascular deaths in the relaxin group at this dosage, but 14.3 percent of the placebo group had died from cardiovascular causes, the study found.

The study also found that people in the relaxin 30 µ/kg group spent less time in the hospital than did those in the placebo group (10.2 days vs. 12 days) and lived longer after discharge (47.9 days vs. 44.2 days). No safety concerns were noted in the relaxin 30 µ/kg group.

The study was funded by Corthera, and several of the researchers worked for the biopharmaceutical company, which has the rights to develop and market relaxin. The findings were to be presented at the American College of Cardiology meeting in Orlando, Fla., and appear online and in an upcoming print issue of The Lancet.

Over time, standard therapy can resolve shortness of breath and high blood pressure caused by heart failure, but evidence from this study "suggests that early administration of this drug in addition to standard therapy might be associated with more rapid, sustained and complete resolution of acute heart failure, as well as with more favorable long-term outcomes," wrote Dr. John R. Teerlink, of the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center and his colleagues.

On the basis of the study's results, the researchers said they plan to conduct a phase 3 clinical trial of relaxin, at 30 µ/kg, in people with heart failure.

More information
The American Heart Association has more about heart failure.

This is necessary to make sure the colon is as clean as possible so that the doctor gets the best possible view of the colon.

The preparation isn't "nearly as bad as it's made out to be. It only takes a few hours. By the time you're ready for bed, you're all set," Burleson said in a Baylor news release.

The colonoscopy exam itself is probably the easiest part. "The patient is awake, but with sedation, there's little or no discomfort. Many patients have told me it wasn't nearly as scary as they expected," Burleson said.

During the procedure, a long, flexible tube with a tiny video camera is inserted into the colon. The camera sends images to a monitor viewed by the doctor. The images can be printed and stored in a computer.

A colonoscopy is used to look for inflammation, bleeding, ulcers, changes in color, and small growths of tissue called polyps. Most polyps are noncancerous, but they are generally removed during a colonoscopy, and a biopsy is taken to determine if they're benign or malignant.

"The normal lining of the colon should look like the inside of a cheek, completely smooth. We're looking for anything that might signal a digestive condition or early signs of cancer," Burleson said.

More information
The U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has more about colonoscopy.

CT scans expose the fetus to higher levels of radiation than other methods, causing concern that CT scans could harm the developing baby.

"At our institution, utilization of radiological imaging in pregnant women increased 107 percent, comparing 1997 to 2006," said lead researcher Dr. Elizabeth Lazarus, an assistant professor of diagnostic imaging and a radiologist at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. "The rate of increase was highest for computed tomography (CT)."

Lazarus acknowledged that many people worry that the radiation used in these scans might harm the fetus. However, women need not be overly concerned, she added.

"First of all, it should be stated that radiological imaging is safe during pregnancy and is often used to diagnose potentially life-threatening medical problems," Lazarus said. "The risk of direct radiation to the fetus during pregnancy is a very slight increase in childhood malignancy."

The point of the study is to raise awareness about the increase of imaging in pregnant patients and to possibly encourage the development of protocols that minimize radiation exposure, Lazarus said. For example, MRIs and ultrasound do not expose the patient or fetus to ionizing radiation, she noted.

The report is published in the March 17 online edition of Radiology.

For the study, Lazarus' team looked at the trend in pregnant women undergoing CT, fluoroscopy and plain-film X-ray imaging at Rhode Island Hospital and Women and Infants Hospital from 1997 through 2006.

During the period, the number of these tests on pregnant women increased by 10.1 percent a year. The number of CT exams increased by 25.3 percent per year. These exams involve higher amounts of radiation than many other imaging procedures, the researchers noted.

They looked specifically at 5,270 examinations done on 3,285 patients. During the study period, the number of patients imaged each year increased from 237 to 449, and the number of exams increased from 331 to 732. This is an 89 percent increase in patients and a 121 percent increase in examinations. Yet, during the same period, the number of deliveries increased only 7 percent, Lazarus said.

Although the study did not look at the specific causes of increased imaging in these patients, the finding seemed to follow the trend of increased medical imaging in all patient groups, Lazarus said.

"We know from other studies that imaging, particularly MRI and CT, has been increasing in the general population. The increase in the general population has been attributed to multiple causes, including technological progress and the high yield of radiology in the diagnosis and triage of patients. Our data in pregnant patients closely approximates these more general trends," she said.

Dr. Jorge Guerra, a professor of radiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, agreed that the number of CT scans has increased, as has all imaging, but the radiation exposure to the fetus is minimal.

"The dose of radiation given to the fetus in any one exam is very low," he said. For pregnant women undergoing a CT, the odds that the infant will develop a fatal childhood cancer directly related to the radiation exposure of the exam is one in 2,000, Guerra said.

Guerra noted that limiting radiation exposure is an important goal, and current doses of radiation are significantly lower than the doses used during the period of the study.

"There are ways to cut down on the levels of radiation by changing the parameters of the CT," he said. "Since 2006, we have become so acutely aware that we are changing the parameters in studies that affect children and women of childbearing age. There is no excessive risk to the patient or to the fetus."

More information
For more on medical imaging, visit the Radiological Society of North America.

The patients received the treatment at a Manhattan center for natural health.

All but one patient saw at least a 60 percent improvement in eczema severity, based on standard rating scales to measure disease activity, after a little more than three months of treatment. All but one also experienced a 50 percent increase in a quality-of-life questionnaire after about two and a half months of treatment.

The use of steroids, antibiotics and antihistamines by the patients also greatly decreased within 3 months of starting the traditional Chinese medicine. No abnormalities of liver and kidney function were observed.

Despite such positive results, which were expected to be presented in Washington, D.C., at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology's annual meeting, the researchers said people should still discuss using any complementary or alternative medicines with a physician before starting treatment.

More information
The U.S. National Library of Medicine has more about eczema.

But if you're not careful, you can cause permanent injury.

The American Academy of Family Physicians offers these suggestions for safe weight lifting:

Remember to always wear sturdy shoes that provide traction when lifting weights. Also make sure that any weight machines are in good working order.

Keep your back straight when lifting. Also remember to be careful when carrying weights around the weight room.

Always ask someone to spot you when lifting very heavy weights.

Always exhale while you lift the weights upward.

Limit each set of muscles to only three workouts each week.

If your muscles start to hurt, stop lifting.

Serotonin, a brain chemical, previously had been found to help foster the pleasant feelings people get from drinking as well as personal preference and consumption of the beverage.

"Of the six variants examined in the study, we found that one variant at the 3' end of the gene showed a significant association with drinking intensity," study co-author Ming D. Li, professor of psychiatry and neurobehavioral sciences at UVA's School of Medicine, said in a news release from the university's health system. "Specifically, we found that individuals with the 'G' allele of this variant drink less than individuals with the 'T allele.' "

The findings, published in the February issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, could help in tailoring treatment of alcoholism, study co-author Dr. Bankole Johnson, chairman of UVA's department of psychiatry and neurobehavioral sciences, said in the news release.

"A known genetic marker could be used to sub-type alcoholics and better determine treatment methods that can target specific underlying molecular mechanisms," Johnson said.
