Plot :

The game follows FBI Agent Victoria McPherson in tracking down and stopping a serial killer. Gameplay has moved with the killer, known as the East Coast Torturer, to Maine. The game uses the same storytelling device of switching back and forth between two player characters as its predecessor. The second character is one of the killer’s victims, journalist Paloma Hernandez, who has been covering the East Coast Torturer’s crimes, making the game switch between investigation and survival.

A short introduction to the game was posted on August 31, which covers the dates of October 2 and 3, 2008 in the game. It states that on the evening of October 2 the body of a missing person was found on the side of Highway 201, near Jackman. The video which had been sent to the police and the media identifies the killer as the East Coast Torturer. McPherson sees Hernandez reporting on the killing on TV and later arranges a meeting. Paloma is abducted and she wakes up on October 3 in the killer’s dilapidated house.

The game was directed by Hiroshi Takai and was the first Unreal Engine 3 game to be released by Square Enix. It is intended by Square Enix president Yōichi Wada to “become a cornerstone for [their] worldwide strategy”. Art direction was overseen by chief artist Kimihiko Miyamae and art producer Yusuke Naora. The game’s soundtrack was composed by Tsuyoshi Sekito.

Gameplay :

The Last Remnant features a brand new battle system labelled by Hiroshi Takai (director) as a “Turn-based, command-based system using symbol encounters.” There are no random encounters. It also contains quick time events, sequences where the player must press a combination of buttons with a correct timing to defeat enemies.

In addition to the main character, the player’s team (called a “Union”) is composed of a number of soldiers whose skills vary according to different parameters. One parameter is the “morale” bar, which is affected by the events in battle and affects the way characters perform in battle. Battles can involve up to 70 enemies at once and are at the core of the gameplay. Nobuyuki Ueda has commented on the battle system, claiming that it is “much deeper than the few seconds it received in the movie”. Additionally, a high number of quests are expected.

Gameplay :

Tales of Valor includes new units, additional maps and further multiplayer modes, such as ‘Stonewall’, where the player commands a small number of troops against waves of increasingly difficult enemies, and a feature called “direct-fire”, where the player ‘Points and shoots’ (seen in Soldiers: Heroes of WWII and Men of War). It has been announced that no new factions will be added but that new units, new models and textures will.

Development :

There are going to be three new short campaigns, one where the player commands a Tiger I tank crew using the ‘new’ direct fire mode (Based on the Battle of Villers-Bocage), one as escaping Germans in the Falaise Pocket and one with US paratroopers based around taking a Causeway . There will be new online units to replace old ones, such as the M18 Hellcat tank destroyer, T17, H39 Geshutzwagen, Schwimmwagen, Tiger 205, Staghound, Kangaroo Carrier and the Hotchkiss. Also there will be three new online multiplayer modes including one where the player will defend a town against an overwhelming AI opponent called Stonewall. a Tank on Tank gamemode called Panzerkrieg and a Hero based mode called Assault.

The story of the game takes place during the time of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Ubisoft’s Associate Brand Manager Shane Bierwith told X-Play that in Ghost Recon 1 and 2, the player asks for a bomb drop and the player is able to play those drops in HAWX.

Gameplay :

The single player game plays out through 3 modes. Career, Championship, and Rally World, which is a single race set up.

The Career mode is set up in a stylized pyramid that has 11 “tiers”, with the bottom tier having 11 different events. Each event consists of one or more race events of a single type requiring a specific type of car. The player earns up to 10 points for their placing in all the races within the event. Most events require a specific number of points within a specific tier to unlock, and thus as the player earns points, more of the pyramid becomes unlocked, moving up to the “Champion of Champions” event at the very top. By winning races and earning money the player is able to purchase cars and liveries (skins) for the cars. In total there are 46 different cars and 186 liveries. The amount of money earned is based on the difficulty level picked by the player when selecting the event; higher difficulty levels have more challenging AI opponents and more realistic damage effects. Completed events can be repeated at any time, although unless challenged at a higher difficulty level, the player will earn significantly less money than when they first raced it. In Rally events with multiple races, the player has the opportunity to repair damage between races, but is only allotted 60 minutes of damage repair at each point based on time estimates to fix each component of the car.

Championship mode offers up a series of races in which the player’s combined time throughout each stage is cumulative.

Multiplayer allows the player to race up to 100 other players in rally races through solo competition, as there are no other cars, ghosts or players present on the track. Fastest time determines who wins.

Missions and Storyline

The game is divided into missions, and the story is presented in cut scenes, shown before and after every mission, with animated characters rendered in real-time and pre-recorded speech. This approach is similar to other games in this genre, which don’t rely on video, instead providing a comparable quality of visual and dramatic appeal, reusing the same in-game 3D engine for cut scene rendering.

Missions have objectives that must all be completed before the mission ends.

Straight-forward tactics are not encouraged, with stealthy and covert movement giving the player a better rating, rank and chance of survival, with the highest attainable ranking entitled David Jones.

Multiple paths exist for every mission, with the most obvious and daunting being a noisy gun-fight, because in every mission Jones is outnumbered anywhere from 20-1 upto 50-1. Every mission presents an opportunity for large groups of enemies to be bypassed or sneaked past, undiscovered. Certain missions even require entire operations to be carried out undetected, i.e. without giving enemies a chance to sound the alarm, as the name Covert Strike suggests.

At the start of a new game, a difficulty level can be chosen, changing the number of bullets Jones takes before dying, the intelligence of the enemy and group AI, and the number of save-games available.

Covert operation

The player can use the available Map computer to recon the mission area, remotely viewing a real-time satellite image of the terrain with structures and outdoor enemies clearly visible, which is also necessary to plan strike routes, after monitoring enemy patrol routes and other strategic information. Using the binoculars and thermal goggles, nearby enemies can be located, sometimes even through walls.

Jones is equipped with lock picks, and safe crackers making him capable of forced entry into any locked room or safe, enabling noiseless and stealthy entry into restricted areas and buildings, and obtaining military secrets or private information, and objects. Remote-controlled CR-4 explosives are also available for use on certain ground targets, meaning large structures can be destroyed safely, from a distance, leaving Jones undetected. Air strikes can be called for on certain missions, using the laser designator to pinpoint ground targets for bombing.

Stealthy shooting

Players begin missions with certain fixed or carry-over weapons from earlier missions, although additional weapons can be obtained from killed enemies, the player is required to assess future tasks and equip the most suitable weapons, judging based on the cut scene briefing, and the objectives list.

Like its prequel, realism was intended to be paramount in this game, which features more than 30 accurately modeled real-world weapons which look and behave exactly like they do in real life[4], including their rate of fire and loading times.

Bullets also perform and penetrate differently, based on their speed, weight and caliber, and target material: wood, steel, plastic or flesh, meaning players will be able to kill multiple targets with one shot or hit targets right through cover. Targets are affected not only by Jones’s movement and stance but also the calculated kickback for each weapon.

Silenced weapons, completely unavailable in the prequel, such as the G17-SD and SOCOM handguns, the SMG-2 sub-machine gun, and the PSG-1SD sniping rifle, enable silent and stealthy killing even from great distances, leaving the enemy clueless and Jones completely undetected.

Other heavier weapons such as the MP5-A3 and MP5-SD3 sub-machine guns, AK-47 and G36 assault rifles, with faster fire and reloading rates, more range or hitting power are needed for all-out gun-battles, where usage is usually at the cost of being discovered by multiple nearby enemies, and therefore giving Jones less chance of survival.

Some unique weapons such as the SVD Dragunov and M82A1-T sniping rifles, the G11 assault rifle, however, provide a balance of both power and stealth, emitting noise, yet usable from great distances meaning if used strategically while under cover, Jones can go undetected yet effecting a 1-shot 1-life hitrate.

Only 2 guns can be carried at any given time and the rest have to be left behind, unlike its prequel where Jones could carry any number, promoting critical thinking and weapon understanding, as each weapon has very different strengths and side-effects.
