According to several sources, NickServ passwords were allegedly compromised and stolen from several other IRC networks today. WyldRyde was not compromised and if your WyldRyde NickServ password is unique to WyldRyde you don't need to do anything.

If your NickServ password on WyldRyde wasn't unique to WyldRyde, we strongly suggest you take a moment now to make a new password on WyldRyde. This is to prevent someone from accessing your NickServ account on WyldRyde using the password they may have stolen elsewhere.

You may change your password with the following command:
/msg nickserv set password newpasswordgoeshere

DMDirc 0.6.3m1 Released

A milestone release of DMDirc has been posted to the DMDirc web site. According to the release notes over 1000 commits resulting in over 200 feature additions, bug fixes and other changes have been made.

DNDirc is a cross-platform Java IRC client for Linux, BSD, Solaris, OS X, Windows and other Java supported operating systems.

Some of the major fixes and changes include:

A redesign of the preferences dialog
Improved support for SSL certficates (both client and server)
Support for SOCKS proxies
Ability to automatically restart the client after installing updates
Ability for plugins to specify ’services’ that they provide/require.
Ability for plugins to export (share) methods with each other
Improved MDI support
A more robust DCC plugin
Moving of the UI to a plugin, allowing for it to be updated separately from the main client

FTC shutters alleged Rouge ISP and Botnet host

The US Federal Trade Commission has shut down US Internet Service Provider Pricewert LLC d/b/a 3FN and APS Telecom after alleging they are responsible for hosting Botnets and participating in the distribution of spam, child porn, spyware and malware.

FTC Shuts Down Notorious Rogue Internet Service Provider, 3FN Service Specializes in Hosting Spam-Spewing Botnets, Phishing Web sites, Child Pornography, and Other Illegal, Malicious Web Content
A rogue Internet Service Provider that recruits, knowingly hosts, and actively participates in the distribution of spam, child pornography, and other harmful electronic content has been shut down by a district court judge at the request of the Federal Trade Commission. The ISP’s upstream providers and data centers have disconnected its servers from the Internet.

According to the FTC, the defendant, Pricewert LLC, which does business under a variety of names including 3FN and APS Telecom, actively recruits and colludes with criminals seeking to distribute illegal, malicious, and harmful electronic content including child pornography, spyware, viruses, trojan horses, phishing, botnet command and control servers, and pornography featuring violence, bestiality, and incest. The FTC alleges that the defendant advertised its services in the darkest corners of the Internet, including a forum established to facilitate communication between criminals.

The complaint alleges that Pricewert actively shielded its criminal clientele by either ignoring take-down requests issued by the online security community, or shifting its criminal elements to other Internet protocol addresses it controlled to evade detection.

The FTC also alleges that the defendant engaged in the deployment and operation of botnets – large networks of computers that have been compromised and enslaved by the originator of the botnet, known as a “bot herder.” Botnets can be used for a variety of illicit purposes, including sending spam and launching denial of service attacks. According to the FTC, the defendant recruited bot herders and hosted the command-and-control servers – the computers that relay commands from the bot herders to the compromised computers known as “zombie drones.” Transcripts of instant-message logs filed with the district court show the defendants’ senior employees discussing the configuration of botnets with bot herders. And, in filings with the district court, the FTC alleges that more than 4,500 malicious software programs are controlled by command-and-control servers hosted by 3FN. This malware includes programs capable of keystroke logging, password stealing, and data stealing, programs with hidden backdoor remote control activity, and programs involved in spam distribution.

The FTC charged that the defendants’ distribution of illegal, malicious, and harmful content and deployment of botnets that compromised thousands of computers caused substantial consumer injury and was an unfair practice, in violation of federal law.

The court issued a temporary restraining order to prohibit Pricewert’s illegal activities and require its upstream Internet providers and data centers to cease providing services to Pricewert. The order also freezes Pricewert’s assets. The court will hold a preliminary injunction hearing on June 15, 2009.

This case was brought with the invaluable assistance of NASA’s Office of Inspector General, Computer Crime Division; Gary Warner, Director of Research in Computer Forensics, University of Alabama at Birmingham; The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children; The Shadowserver Foundation; Symantec Corporation; and The Spamhaus Project.

The Commission vote to authorize staff to file the complaint was 4-0. The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division.

NOTE: The Commission files a complaint when it has “reason to believe” that the law has been or is being violated, and it appears to the Commission that a proceeding is in the public interest. The complaint is not a finding or ruling that the defendant has actually violated the law. The case will be decided by the court.

Air Force Colonel wants offensive and public Botnet

A US Air Force Colonel Charlie Williamson, speaking on BBC Radio 4's The Report, the US should have an offensive botnet to retaliate against any online attacks against the US, reports the BBC.

Col Williamson - who served with the US Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency - says that the US military should be ready to take such an attack to the enemy.
"The idea is that if we have the capability to strike back, then a potential attacker has to take that into account before launching an attack.

"I recommend that we make our botnet - the botnet I propose - public. The whole world knows about it. That we exercise it on ranges that other countries can see electronically, that they know what we're doing and then they are going to be more likely to back off before doing an attack because they have to take this into account," he said.

Security Researcher wants Botneters and Hackers Hunted by Special Ops

Joe Stewart, director of SecureWorks Inc.'s counterthreat unit wants 'special ops' teams to hound and hunt criminal cybergangs, reports Computerworld.

"We need a new approach to fighting cybercrime," said Joe Stewart, director of SecureWorks Inc.'s counterthreat unit. "What we're doing now is not making a significant dent."
Rather than pursue malware makers the old-fashioned way -- a tack Stewart argued is haphazard, at best -- he said that teams of paid security researchers should be created to stalk and disrupt specific criminal gangs or botnets. Set up like a police department's major crimes unit or a military special operations team, the researchers would take a long-term view, get to know their target, perhaps even infiltrate the group responsible for the botnet and employ a spectrum of disruptive tactics.

FBI and British Law Enforcement Seeking Botnet Builders

British Law enforcement and the FBI are actively looking for the individuals that created the largest botnet, reports World Watch from CBS News.

London's Metropolitan Police department confirmed to CBS News on Wednesday that their e-crime unit was investigating a botnet created by Ukrainian hackers. The Met would not say what other agencies they are working with, but they do often work with other agencies on cases involving international cyber-crime, including the FBI.
CBSNews.com partner CNET reported Tuesday that Ophir Shalitin, Finjan's marketing director, said in an interview on the eve of the RSA security conference that the gang had compromised computers in 77 government-owned domains in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Massive Botnet found on almost 2 million PCs

A large botnet from the Ukraine that has infected nearly 2 million computers is stunning security researchers, reports DarkReading.

The botnet, which appears to be larger than the infamous Storm botnet was in its heyday, has infected machines from some 77 government-owned domains -- 51 of which are U.S. government ones, according to Ophir Shalitin, marketing director of Finjan, which recently found the botnet. Shalitin says the botnet is controlled by six individuals and is hosted in Ukraine.
Aside from its massive size and scope, what is also striking about the botnet is what its malware can do to an infected machine. The malware lets an attacker read the victim's email, communicate via HTTP in the botnet, inject code into other processes, visit Websites without the user knowing, and register as a background service on the infected machine, for instance. The bots communicate with their command and control systems via HTTP.

Juvenile Botner sentenced to 11 months in prison

A male juvenile, who has been widely known in the hacker underground by his online moniker, “DSHOCKER,” was sentenced today in federal court to 11 months in prison, to be served in a juvenile detention facility, for computer intrusion, interstate threats, and wire fraud, stemming from hacking, botnet, and “swatting” activities. In accordance with federal law, the juvenile was not publicly named.

United States Attorney Michael J. Sullivan and Warren T. Bamford, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation - Boston Field Division, announced that a 17-year-old male juvenile from Massachusetts was sentenced before U.S. District Court Judge Dennis F. Saylor, IV, to 11 months in prison, to be served in a juvenile detention facility, followed by two years of supervised release.

At the November 18, 2008 change of plea hearing, the prosecutor told the Court that, had the case proceeded to trial, the government would have proven that, from 2005-2008, the defendant (1) hacked into multiple corporate computer systems and took command of thousands of other computers in a “botnet” (a network of infected computers), directing them to perform cyberattacks on victim computer servers; (2) placed hoax emergency telephone calls to elicit armed police responses from SWAT (“special weapons and tactics”) police teams and others, as well as reported phony bomb threats, and (3) made fraudulent credit card purchases with stolen credit cards. His “swatting” activities created a serious risk of physical harm to innocent victims, and the multiple bomb threats caused extensive disruptions to important public services. Furthermore, the defendant’s hacking activities were disruptive to major companies’ computer systems, and they wreaked havoc on tens of thousands of computers that were compromised.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam J. Bookbinder in Sullivan’s Economic Crimes Unit and Mona Sedky Spivack of the Computer Crime & Intellectual Property Section of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.

Ustream redesign changed ustream chat behavior

If you had your Ustream channel page redirected to WyldRyde you were probably surprised to find out this evening that your Ustream flash chat no longer goes to WyldRyde but to Ustream's own chat server instead.

Ustream launched a redesign minutes ago and reset all the chat rooms back to their own chat server. Apparently, Ustream says they're no longer preforming any chat switches. However, you can keep using WyldRyde if you disable the Ustream chat room and embed the WyldRyde flash chat in your About section (Describe your show).

Services problem - ns_recover

WyldRyde has recently identified a problem with the core Anope module that powers NickServ's 'release' command. The use of this command, in some instances, caused services to crash.

This is a known bug and Anope have already fixed it in their latest SVN release. We have made the decision to disable the module, therefore removing ns release functionality from the network. This is instead of running the SVN version of the module with the older stable code.

The decision was reached due to the fact that 'release' is a very obscure and under-used command. If this command is crititical to your use of the network, please let us know and we will look at re-implementing it using SVN code.

EDIT: We have compiled in the SVN version of the module. Please let us know if any issues are encountered.

Conficker Worm Targeting Microsoft Windows Systems

US-CERT is reporting that they're aware of widespread infection of the Conficker Worm.

The worm infects computers running Microsoft Windows via a thumb drive, a network share, or directly across the network if the host is not patched with update MS08-067.

The presence of a Conficker infection may be detected if a user is unable to navigate to the following websites: http://www.symantec.com/norton/theme.jsp?themeid=conficker_worm&inid=us_ghp+link_conficker_worm http://www.mcafee.com
If a user is unable to reach either of these websites, the Conficker infection may be indicated (the most current variant of Conficker interferes with queries for these sites, preventing a user from visiting them). If a Conficker infection is suspected, the infected system should be removed from the network. Major anti-virus vendors and Microsoft have released several free tools that can verify the presence of a Conficker infection and remove the worm. Instructions for manually removing a Conficker infection from a system have been published by Microsoft in Knowledgebase Article 962007.

US-CERT encourages users to prevent a Conficker infection by ensuring all systems have the MS08-067 patch (part of Security Update KB958644, which was published by Microsoft in October 2008), disabling AutoRun functionality (see US-CERT Technical Cyber Security Alert TA09-020A), and maintaining up-to-date antivirus software.

US-CERT will provide additional information as it becomes available.

Botneter sentenced to 4 years in prison

In the first US prosecution of its kind, John Schiefer, 27, of Los Angeles, also known as "acidstorm," was sentenced last week to 48 months in federal prison for using "botnets" to steal the identities of victims throughout the country by extracting information from their personal computers and wiretapping their communications, according the US Department of Justice.

John Schiefer, 27, of Los Angeles, who used the online handle "acidstorm," pleaded guilty last year to accessing protected computers to conduct fraud, disclosing illegally intercepted electronic communications, wire fraud and bank fraud. Schiefer was sentenced by United States District Judge A. Howard Matz, who also ordered the defendant to pay a $2,500 fine.
When he pleaded guilty, Schiefer admitted that he illegally accessed hundreds of thousands of computers in the United States and that he remotely controlled these compromised machines through computer servers. Once in control of the "zombie" computers, Schiefer used his botnets to search for vulnerabilities in other computers, intercept electronic communications and engage in identity theft.

In connection with the wiretapping scheme, Schiefer admitted that he and others installed malicious computer code, known as "malware," on zombie computers that captured electronic communications as they were sent from users' computers. Because victims with compromised computers did not know that their computers had become infected and were "bots," they continued to use their computers to engage in commercial activities, such as making online purchases. Schiefer's "spybot" malware allowed him to intercept communications sent between victims' computers and financial institutions, such as PayPal. Schiefer sifted through those intercepted communications and mined usernames and passwords to accounts. Using the stolen usernames and passwords, Schiefer made purchases and transferred funds without the consent of the victims. Schiefer also gave the stolen usernames and passwords, as well as the wiretapped communications, to others. Schiefer is the first person in the nation to plead guilty to wiretapping charges in connection with the use of botnets.

Schiefer also admitted stealing information from numerous computers by accessing the PStore, which is intended to be a secure storage area of computers running Microsoft operating systems. To accomplish this, Schiefer installed malware on computers that caused them to send account access information, including usernames and passwords for PayPal and other financial websites, to computers controlled by Schiefer and others. Schiefer used that information to make unauthorized purchases using funds transferred directly from victims' bank accounts. Finally, Schiefer admitted defrauding a Dutch Internet advertising company with his armies of zombie computers. Schiefer signed up as a consultant with the advertising company and promised to install the company's programs on computers only when the owners of those computers gave consent. Instead, Schiefer and two co-schemers installed that program on approximately 150,000 zombie computers whose owners did not give consent. Schiefer was ultimately paid more than $19,000 by the advertising company.

In addition to his guilty pleas to the criminal charges, Schiefer has agreed to pay approximately $20,000 in restitution to the Dutch advertising company and financial institutions that he defrauded.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Spring Clean

The WyldRyde IRC network has undergone a spring clean! This has involved major re-routing of servers, removal of some unstable servers and an overhaul of the zone file. A regular backup of services has also been created so it can be run during services maintenance. The work is now complete and we hope that this will help improve the general stability of the network.

Stability improvements completed

A data center that hosts one of our key hub servers was experiencing very short, infrequent and intermittent transatlantic routing issues which resulted in brief netsplits between our EU and US servers. Normally, routing issues like these are corrected by the data center and/or peer and connectivity providers within a few weeks. However since the problem has been ongoing for just over two weeks and started increasing in frequency, our Admins began to hammer out a plan to move things around.

Since WyldRyde has dedicated servers strategically located around the globe, the changes needed had to be talked out and carefully planned in detail by our Admins to insure that they would be executed smoothly and with as little interruption of service as possible.

Earlier today Phil and Corey carried out the plan and completed rerouting all our servers and making several other moves and adjustments to them. These changes should improve overall stability of the network.

We appreciated your patience over the past few weeks and your continued support of WyldRyde. Thank you!

Microsoft offering $250,000 reward for Conficker creator

The windows worm commonly known as Conficker is creating havoc by exploiting a vulnerability in the Windows Server service (SVCHOST.EXE).

When the vulnerability is successfully exploited, it may allow remote code execution when file sharing is enabled. Depending on the specific variant, it may also spread via removable drives and by exploiting weak passwords. It can also disable several important system services and security products and downloads malicious files.

In order to help bring the person(s) responsible for Conficker to justice Microsoft has announced a $250,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for creating the Conficker Internet worm.

We have announced a US$250,000 reward for information that results in the arrest and conviction of those responsible for illegally launching the Conficker worm. Individuals with information about the Conficker worm are encouraged to contact their international law enforcement agencies. Additionally, Microsoft has implemented an Antivirus Reward Hotline, 1-425-706-1111, and an Antivirus Reward Mailbox, avreward@microsoft.com, where tips can be shared.

How to switch your Ustream chat to WyldRyde

To use WyldRyde on your Ustream.TV show page just follow these 3 quick and easy steps:

Paste the following Web Chat code into your Ustream.TV My Shows Info (in the "Describe your show" box.)
You'll need to change each instance of "YOURCHANNELNAME" to your channel's name. Please note that the # sign is already included where it needs to be. Don't add it to the code yourself.

How To Setup mIRC

mIRC is easily the most popular IRC client for Windows. With it you can connect to WyldRyde and chat in many channels. You may also use it to run very simple to very complex scripts that can even allow you to setup mIRC as a full featured IRC Bot.

How To Setup mIRC for Windows:
(Editors note: This tutorial was written by Firebucket.)

NOTE: mIRC is NOT free, but WILL run after 30 days of use, if you have not registered your copy. It will just become nagware, meaning you'll have to wait 30 seconds before you can click OK on the Registration Reminder when starting mIRC

Download and install mIRC mIRC is avaliable from http://mirc.com (or http://mirc.co.uk).
1. Download the setup file and run it.
2. Follow each step, but make sure you select 'Full' from the Choose Components part of the installation wizard, not Upgrade.
3. mIRC will now install and then an icon will appear on your desktop; if you specified the setup to create an icon.
Configure mIRC
1. When you first start mIRC, and get past the Registration Warning screen (just press Continue when that appears) the mIRC Options dialog will appear.
2. Fill in your First Name, Email Address (you don't have to provide one), a nickname you would like to use and an alternative nickname.
3. Now we have to select WyldRyde as the server we want to connect to.
4. Select 'Servers' from the Category Tree-menu on the left-hand side.
5. Then scroll to and click on 'WyldRyde' in the 'IRC Servers' list, then click Select.
6. Now we can connect! Click 'Connect' in the mIRC Options dialog, under the 'Connect' option in the tree menu.
7. The mIRC Favorites dialog will appear when you connect. This is pointless as none of the chatrooms/channels in that list are on WyldRyde. Untick 'Pop up favorites on connect' at the bottom of the dialog, and then click OK.
Registering your nickname and joining channels
Well, you've made it! You've successfully connected to WyldRyde. Time to register your nickname, so no one else can use it! The nickname I'm using for this tutorial is 'Tutorial1', but you can use whatever you like, as long as it isn't already registered. (You'll be notified if it is already taken)
So, to register your nickname type:
/msg NickServ REGISTER password email

Replace 'password' with a unique password and 'email' with your legitimate email address. Make the password difficult, but make sure you can remember it, as you will need to identify yourself every time you connect to WyldRyde.

You are now registered

Now that you've got that out of the way, why not join a channel and start chatting? If you want to talk about a certain topic, or just hang out, it's probably best to look at the channel list.

To view the channel list, type the following and hit enter:
/list
The channel list will start to populate. Double click on any channel you wish to join, and you will enter that channel.
Reconnecting and Identifying
Missing IRC and want to reconnect again? No problem!
1. Start up mIRC again, and click either the Connect icon () in the toolbar, or click 'Connect' from the mIRC Options dialog, like we did earlier.
2. Once you've connected, you'll need to identify your nickname using the password we made during registration. To identify, type: /ns identify password
  Be SURE to replace 'password' with the unique password we created during registration
