Sailing Channel Theater Promo Ep1

TheSailingChannel.TV's one-hour sailing series, Sailing Channel Theater, premiers on New York Public TV station WLIW21 this Sunday, July 5, at 1pm EDT. The series will run through Sept 6 with an option to renew and be presented to APT for national PBS distribution.

Located on Long Island, WLIW21 is the third most watched PBS station in the US and sister station to WNET13. The station covers the largest sailing grounds in the United States encompassing New Jersey, New York City, Long Island, and Connecticut.

In the premier episode, the first half-hour features extended excerpts from Lin and Larry Pardey's latest documentary, "Cruising Has NO LIMITS." Tory Salvia, President of The Sailing Channel and Host for Sailing Channel Theater, introduces the world renowned cruising couple. This remarkable film shows Lin and Larry skimming before caressing trade winds, savoring tropical landfalls, and evading stormy seas. But their stories of ocean voyaging are much richer than the typical image of the cruising life under sail. We join the documentary in the Indian Ocean as the Pardey's, on board their 29-foot, 9-inch engineless wooden cutter Taleisin, close in on the southern tip of Africa for the first of three incredible adventures. Once safely ashore, Lin and Larry plan and execute a seven month “Champagne Safari on a Beer Budget,” outfitting a 4X4 to reach remote corners of southern Africa. During their two-year stay, they cover more than 12,000 miles enjoying campfire evenings with Kalahari Bushmen and days of animal-watching at waterholes far from game reserves. Next the Pardey's set sail across the Atlantic to Brazil and some incredible island cruising south of Rio. During this second adventure, we see how two 14-year-old passengers lead them into a unique, eight-month-long island encounter with several Brazilian families who dream of their own off shore adventures. Finally, the Pardey's voyage north to Ireland’s music-filled shores where they enjoy a summer of history, classic sailing, Irish music, and new friendships. Cruising Has NO LIMITS is a treat for both seasoned sailors and those who just dream of visiting different cultures under sail.

The second half-hour, Host, Tory Salvia, introduces "Distant Shores," the highly acclaimed half-hour sailing/travel/adventure series produced by Canadian sailors, Paul and Sheryl Shard. In episode one, we join the Shards aboard their Classic 37 sloop, "Two Step," as they explore the West Coast of Turkey. The Shards voyage north viewing ancient ruins and olive groves along the way. They take a Turkish bath in a natural hot spring "hamam" along the shore and visit a town on an inland lake. A trip to a barber becomes an enlightening experience when Paul discovers that Turkish barbers use flames as well as razors when he goes for a shave.

Sen. Kennedy Warms Up for the Figawi

(NECN: Hyannisport, Mass.) - It was a day at the shore designed to send a message. Ted Kennedy has no plans to slow down. Senator Kennedy and his wife, Vicki, went sailing Wednesday afternoon, just one day after it was announced that he has a brain tumor. On a picture perfect day for a sail, Kennedy took his Portugese water dogs for a swim, and then climbed aboard for a sail aboard his boat 'Mya'.

After the sail, Kennedy summed up his health with a one word answer. "Good." He's told family members he's planning to race this weekend in the Figawi, an annual regatta between Hyannis and Nantucket.

This is a fast-paced video, with gorgeous photography, that will give you a first hand look at the cruising lifestyle. Over 10,000 miles have passed under Bettie’s keel since Bob and Kaye left Los Angeles in 2004. They sailed down the west coast to Panama, through the Canal, east to Cartagena, Columbia then north to Honduras and east across the Caribbean to the Bahamas. That's the focus of this video.

Next, Bob and Kaye cruised north along the eastern U.S. seaboard to Boston. The geese were flying south by October beckoning them back to warmer climes, so they headed south to Guatemala and Honduras. After refitting and some time back in L.A., Bob and Kaye sailed back across the Caribbean to the Florida Keys. MRE Men's Tug-of-War

Once a year, local and national attention focuses on the Annapolis Harbor — or, as some like to call it, the Gulf of Eastport — for a competition unlike any in the world: the Slaughter Across the Water. It is the longest tug-of-war over a body of water in the world.

The Tug is staged between the Maritime Republic of Eastport, the MRE, and Downtown Annapolis, featuring a 1700’ rope, over 350 tuggers, and more than a thousand spectators. The Tug transforms Downtown Annapolis and Eastport with a festival-like atmosphere that includes food vendors, cheering crowds, and all sorts of local color. The Tug draws on the rivalry between Eastport and the City of Annapolis, with civic pride on both sides allowing this zany event to improve more than community morale. What is MRE? Like any great movement, the concept for the Maritime Republic of Eastport began in a local pub over a couple mugs of beer. The prime mission was to find a creative way to promote and encourage the patronage of Eastport businesses that were destined to be hurt by the Maryland State Highway Administration's shutting down for repair of the drawbridge connecting mainland Annapolis with the Eastport peninsula. This is the ninth and final episode in a series of videos describing the roles of crew members aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. You can view the full 22-minute video at Sail.tv In this final episode, we learn about the two Bow Men who make up the foredeck team and run the front of the boat. Their main responsibility is to prepare, set, dose, and pack the spinnaker and head sails as quickly and correctly as possible. During the pre-start, the Bow Men play a critical role in signaling the distance to the start line and the position of opponents to the Helmsman. The Bow Men must possess a high level of agility, athleticism, and strength as they perform acrobatic maneuvers to adjust the spinnaker pole and sails at the business end of an America's Cup racing yacht. The Mast and Pit Men: America's Cup BMW ORACLE

This is the eighth in a series of videos describing the roles of crew members aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. In this episode, we observe teamwork of the Mast and Pit Men who work around the mast and in the front end of the cockpit. The Mast Men handle the halyards at the mast that raise and lower sails. They also grind the mainsail upwind and during the prestart. The Pit Men coordinate the sail hosts and drops, controlling halyards, foreguys, and other control lines. The Trimmers: America's Cup BMW ORACLE

This is the seventh in a series of videos describing the roles of crew members aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. In this episode we watch the Trimmers tune the sails for maximum performance. The headsail trimmer crouches low on the leeward side of the boat just behind the trailing edge of the genoa. This is right in the wind slot between the headsail and mainsail which acts like a turbo charger, firing alternate bursts of sea spray and wind at the trimmer as the boat accelerates. "You are pretty well rinsed by the time you come off the water" says Zach Hurst, one of the younger trimmers aboard. Directing the muscle power of the grinders, who handle loads up to 4-tons, the trimmer alters the shape of the headsail. He coordinates with the mainsail trimmer who uses a winch to position the boom and adjust the angle of the mainsail to the wind. Depending on the course direction, the trimmers adjust the sails for optimum shape and speed. Their interaction directs the flow of wind over the sails, driving the yacht forward. The Grinders: America's Cup BMW ORACLE

This is the sixth in a series of videos describing the roles of crew members aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. In this episode, we learn about the "work horses" of the crew: the grinders. It's like working out on a gigantic exercise machine for 10 hours a day. Physically demanding, the grinders work in pairs, using a variety of winches to shape the sails in coordination with the trimmers. Sailing upwind, the loads are huge: about 4 tons on the headsail sheet and 5 to 6 tons on the mainsheet. During the pre-starts and tacking duels, the grinders work like demons to keep up with rapidly changing sail settings. "You need to remember to breathe," says veteran grinder Graig Monk. The Weather Team: America's Cup BMW ORACLE

In this episode we ride along on the weather boat with team meteorologist, Chris Bedford. Chris heads the weather team, receiving updates from other team weather boats and weather buoys strung out along the race course. Chris analyzes the data then relays it o the strategist aboard the race boat. There the Afterguard combines the weather analysis with other information to determine the best racing strategy for current conditions. The Strategist: America's Cup BMW ORACLE

This is the fourth in a series of videos describing the roles of crew members aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. In this episode, we hear from the boat's strategist, Eric Doyle. Prior to the race, the strategist communicates with weather boats out on the race course. He then confers with the Helmsman and other members of the Afterguard to develop a race strategy. The strategist also works closely with the mainsail trimmer to adjust the backstays which alter the curvature of the mast, determining the shape of the genoa and mainsail. When the wind is light, the strategist goes aloft to search for a breeze. Eric raced in the 2000 America's Cup as mainsail trimmer aboard Conner's Stars & Stripes. The Navigator: America's Cup BMW ORACLE

This is the third in a series of videos describing the roles of crewmembers aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. In this episode, we hear from another member of the Afterguard, Peter Isler, the boat's Navigator. Peter helped win the America's Cup as navigator aboard Dennis Conner's Stars & Stripes in 1987 and 1988. He's competed in every America's Cup since. The Navigator's primary job is track the yacht's course using the on-board computer. Linked into Global Positioning Satellites (GPS), the computer constantly updates the boat's position in relation to the course and its opponent. The navigator queries the computer using a wireless, hand-held tablet and interacts with the the Helmsman, Tactician, and Strategist to keep the yacht racing as efficiently as possible. The Tactician: BMW ORACLE America's Cup

This is the second in a series of videos describing the roles of crewmembers aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. In this episode, we hear from another member of the Afterguard, Sten Mohr, the boat's Tactician. His primary job is to recommend to the helmsman when to jibe (turn away from the wind) or tack (turn into the wind) so the boat travels the most effective course to the next racing mark. Sten is a Danish match racing veteran ranked highly by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF). He was the first European to be ranked as the number one match racer. BMW Oracle Yacht Racing Keel

The BMW ORACLE America's Cup racing yacht features a state-of-the-art keel that accounts for 19 of the vessel's 24 legal tons. Designing and manufacturing the keel posed an exceptional engineering challenge. Engineers needed to balance strength with maximum hydrodynamic efficiency. The keel's bulb or "bomb" must be heavy enough to keep the yacht upright and stable. At the same time the keelfin and bulb must have limited resistance to water flow to maintain maximum boat speed. Further complicating the design is the fact that the keel tends to vibrate as the yacht increases speed. These vibrations transfer to the hull affecting the yacht's structural integrity. To improve the yacht's stiffness, BMW engineers have applied similar technology used in stiffening the companies motor cars. They've also refined the shape and position of the keel wings to increase boat speed.
