To the rest of you did a great job and I hope we get the same effort for the new sheds added for next years comp, but remember each shed on the site (that has not won) goes forward to next years comp automatically, so get some new pictures ready!

One thing that happened this year was a lot of promotion by the sheddies of their sheds canvassing votes via facebook, twitter and their own blogs… plus on forums as different as football fans sites, welders and bikers.

For next year also I may cull a few categorys that did not many votes - and maybe change the rules so that it takes the top ten overall instead of categorys but we can look at that after my shedweek hangover!

Shed of the year 2009 : The Finalists announced

The reason for this post is the lack of quality free(or open source) shed designs out there in the interwebs.

But someone who I read and follow is Michael Janzen from Tiny house design and he has put a selection of shedlike plans up for free on his excellent website.. including

5×8 Tiny Market House

This house is intended to be used as a display for artisans at crafts fairs. It could also be adapted for any micro business that needs a small portable building. It’s footprint might be too small to serve as a real tiny house but it might make a nice weekend camping trailer for one or two people.

and the wonderful

8×16 Tiny Solar House

This is a tiny house on a trailer designed to be lived in full-time. It’s designed to be built easily and at a low cost. The plans include a loft large enough for a queen size mattress, a bathroom complete with a shower and composting toilet. The main living are can be configured to the owner-builders needs.

This is what the community is all about… of course you can buy some of the reputable shed shop? (hint I make commission on each sale), but if you provide plans available to all, then let me know and I will feature them, and maybe the shed built will become shed of the year one year!

Designs for shed of the year 2010? - Free shed plans

An 89-year-old woman faces having her allotment of 30 years taken away by a council because she has started growing flowers instead of vegetables, she said.

Edith Avery said she was told by Rogerstone Community Council that her plot, just a few feet from her back door, would be cleared this week because she had not complied with regulations.

Mrs Avery, of Cefn Road, Rogerstone, near Newport, south Wales, said it was “a shock and a worry” as she was given 14 days to clear the plot - a time limit which ends tomorrow - or the council would arrange it and charge her.

“They said there should be veg on there and I did have veg for years and years, but I’m 89 now and I don’t find it easy so it’s gradually gone over to shrubs and flowers,” the widow said.

“It’s quite well tended, it’s not neglected, but they said they’ve got a list of people who want allotments. There are so many that are unattended and overgrown, but it seems they want this one.”

She said she was not able to speak to the council as a message on its answer phone advised writing a letter.

PUNKS NOT DAD ALBUM AND SINGLE LAUNCH PARTY!!!

NOT everyone can say they built a light aircraft in their garden shed, but that’s exactly what a man from East Cork has done.

You could say it was like putting together an Airfix kit for grown-ups.

It took 51-year-old Peter Sheehy a little over a year to complete and now he can’t wait to get up in the air.

However, before he could achieve his dream, the aircraft had to pass stringent regulations.

Last weekend Peter, who lives in Shanagarry, transported the plane – known as a X Air Hawk – up to Granard, Co Longford, where an aircraft engineer passed it with, pardon the pun, flying colours.

It now has to be flight-tested and, once that is completed, Peter is hoping to take it on a maiden flight to France at the end of next month.

Man builds plane in garden shed

This is my 1498th Post! on the shedblog! update in fact it was 1499th!

If you are on Twitter you may be familiar with hastags so I was thinking we should have something to celebrate shed week and get input from the shed twitter community, a bit like crowd sourcing but with a sheddie angle

So I will periodically until and during shed week posting questions on Twitter - related to Sheds, it would be great if you could answer them, and include the hashtag #shedweek in your reply.

Shed sourcing for Shed Week #shedweek

I had major issues with the readersheds shed server but hopefully it’s sorted now..(touch shed roof, turn around) and I am sorry for any inconvenience this has caused to you sheddies.

It also means I am a few days behind calculating the shed votes.

So the judges should get their emails with the shortlist tonight

Ironically I had a slight blip on the shedblog server as well..

Lucky they are hosted at different companies.. then I may have just given up on it all!

but it does give you a warning if you do run a website to make sure you have backups of everything (lucky I do, but 4500 images is a pain to FTP around the place)

so over the summer you may see some changes to readersheds

I may be dumbing it down to just concentrate on pictures of your sheds and your build details and may rewrite it from the ground up.. or even shed forbid go with an off the shelf system (if I have time to convert the data) but may stick with Coldfusion as I find it easy to write the code quickly

also thinking about using a thirdparty static hosting away from the main site - any recommendations? Amazon s3 is the first one I am looking at.

Lovely Lovely Sheds - Calm now

I just need to “do the math” over the next few days to get the category winners together.

Then our team of crack shed judges including Chris Evans, Sarah Beeny , Trevor Baylis, Alex, Lloyd, Rico and Tim and Tony have to sit down and mark each of the category sheds out of 10, hopefully they will do it in their sheds and decide which is their shed of the year.

I will then tally up all the scores on the shed doors and the shed with the most votes from this secret ballot will win and will announce the Winner on 8th July, keep any eye on shedblog.co.uk or follow me on twitter.

Of course I can’t comment on which one is my favourite Shed of the Year, as I am on the judging panel its very difficult as I love them all!

But all I can say it was a very tight vote in some of the categories after having a quick look last night, and the standard of sheds added for this years competition has matched the quality and innovation we have had in the past years.

I hope to publish a top 3 in each category when I find my calculator (but maybe after Shed Week) on the shedblog.

I will be publishing exclusive interviews with a select bunch of sheddies and shed fans in the coming weeks, so watch the blog for that..

If you have any shed news or are holding any special shed parties during shed week let me know and I will add them to the Shed Colander..
