My best friend Bruce Kessler and I would be glued to ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” during the 1970s when it aired its ‘Superstars” competitions, pitting athletes and celebrities against one another in sports which no one had a natural advantage or, usually, much experience.

Now ABC has once more brought back that old chestnut in a new primetime seasons of “The Superstars,” airs on Tuesday through July at 8 p.m. on ABC. This time around, we get male/female, celebrity/athlete teams including Terrell Owens and Joanna Krupa, Robert Horry and Estella Warren, Lisa Leslie and Dan Cortese, Brandi Chastain and Julio Iglesias Jr. and others.

Joining me today are two superstars who are not teamed together, Baywatch and Melrose Place star David Charvet and actress and former Miss USA Ali Landry.

Michael Jackson, The King of Pop Remembered: Mr. Media Radio

Michael Jackson has died at age 50. The pop idol, whose music, choreography and fashion changed the face of popular culture, was rushed to the hospital shortly after 12:30 p.m. PT on Thursday, June 25, 2009, upon being found unconscious in his Los Angeles home. He reportedly never regained consciousness.

In commemoration of the man, BlogTalkRadio presented Michael Jackson Remembered.

The live, two-hour special was anchored by Mr. Media host Bob Andelman, and featured contributions from fellow BTR hosts Kevin Ross, Mutha Knows, Shaun Daily, MarQ with a Q as well as many listeners.

Guests included Eric Deggans, TV and media critic for the St. Petersburg Times, who is from Michael’s hometown of Gary, Indiana, as well as journalist Jonah Keri.

Bob will also be taking calls from fans around the globe who want to share their memories of The King of Pop – and how he impacted their lives forever.

Last night, my wife and I engaged in one of those perception vs. reality recaps. In it, I recalled my perception of the Showtime sitcom “Weeds” was that there couldn’t possibly a show in which I could have even less interest.

I’ve never been a drug guy. No smoky, no snortie, no pills, hell, I don’t even drink. Never been an interest of mine. So why the hell would I watch a show about a widow who becomes a pot dealer to support her two boys—and it’s played for laughs?

Okay, I was wrong. Last fall, I was laid up for several weeks and going out of my mind with boredom. I became well acquainted with the “On Demand” function of our cable service and caught up with a lot of TV shows I had previously missed. And when those ran out, I watched a random episode of “Weeds.”

I laughed so hard it hurt.

Could I have been so wrong? Yes.

I watched every episode I could find. Several of them, I watched over and over. This summer, I hooked my wife and we rented the series from Netflix, starting with season one. She’s almost caught up and we hope to start on season 5, which began airing new episodes this month, shortly.

If you’ve never seen the show on grounds similar to my original view, I urge you to reconsider. The cast includes Mary Louise Parker, Elizabeth Perkins, the insane Kevin Nealon and the show’s gooey center, my guest today, Justin Kirk, who plays Andy Botwin.

Yes, say sitcom staples Peri Gilpin and Candace Cameron Bure – and that man is Bob Saget.

Peri: Wise to “funny”man’s ways.

Interviewed on Mr. Media, Peri, who played Roz Doyle on Frasier, and Candace, who played D.J. Tanner on Full House, roast their pal Bob – who led the Full House cast as widowed dad Danny Tanner – big-time.

Discussing her TV alma mater with host Bob Andelman, Candace says:

“There’s definitely a place for shows like Full House, where, as parents, we can safely allow our children to watch, and not worry about whether they’ll be exposed to something that isn’t age- appropriate.”

That’s when Peri, who co-stars with Candace in the ABC Family series Make It or Break It, jumps in with this zinger:

“Wait a minute. What about Bob Saget?”

“Exactly. I grew up with that,” replies Candace. “I grew up wayyyy too fast.”

Candace (right): Corrupted by Bob (left)?

“Are you going to blame everything bad that’s happened to you on Saget?” asks our host.

“We’re blaming him for all the dirty jokes in our lives,” says Peri.

“All the dirty jokes in America,” adds Candace.

“I know Bob because I work out at the gym with him – and Candace was there, too, for a while,” says Peri, before whacking the final nail into the Sagat legacy:

“So I know Bob’s little ‘spicy act.’”

Kamran Pasha, MOTHER OF THE BELIEVERS, KINGS author, producer: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Kamran Pasha is a brave man.

He knows that Sherry Jones’ book, The Jewel of Medina—about the birth of Islam—lost its initial publisher in 2008 because of the ruckus it stirred up.

He knows that filmmaker Moustapha Akkad—who created the 1977 movie The Messenger, about the Prophet Muhammad—was killed by terrorists in 2005.

He knows all about the decade-long fatwa by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini against Salman Rushdie for writing The Satanic Verses.

And yet I hold in my hands his just published novel, Mother of the Believers. It is the story of the Prophet Muhammad told in the voice of his young wife, Aisha.

Pasha is also a writer and producer on the NBC-TV drama series “Kings” starring Ian McShane.

Joey and Larry Gallo were some bad hombres. So bad, even most of the mafia wanted nothing to do with them in the 1960s and ‘70s.

Murder, extortion, armed robbery—all in a day’s work for these guys.

But if they were so bad, why do so many literary types come to admire them, especially Joey? Bob Dylan, for example, early in his career, thought of Crazy Joey Gallo as more folk hero than outlaw.

I’ve now read Tom Folsom’s rich, colorful history of the Gallo Brothers, The Mad Ones, but I still don’t get their appeal. Hopefully, the author can clear up the mystery.

If you could afford to stay at any hotel on a business or pleasure trip, I can’t imagine choosing anywhere other than a Four Seasons Hotel or Resort property.

Granted, I’m a little prejudiced. In 2007, I had the good fortune to spend a month doing interviews and background research for Isadore Sharp, founder and chairman of Four Seasons, as he finished his autobiography, Four Seasons: The Story of a Business Philosophy.

This assignment afforded me a behind-the-scenes look at how the Four Seasons became the ultimate brand in luxury hotels and just how seriously the Toronto-based company takes the happiness of its guests. I also spent time with many of the chain’s executives and managers from around the world and learned first-hand of the pride they take in the brand.

But best of all was the time I spent with Mr. Sharp and his lovely wife, Rosalie. Everything they do, they do with class. They’re kind, warmhearted and delightful dinner companions. And now, with publication of his book about the making of the Four Seasons, they’re both acclaimed authors.

Jeanne Martinet, the author of The Art of Mingling, just published a new book, Life Is Friends. I suspect it will become one of those gems that is found on everyone’s bookshelf—or e-book reader—in the future. It’s a lively read and full of great anecdote advice.

If you create or own a sci-fi or other genre character or franchise, one of the top, go-to guys for a writer who will admirably adapt your property for novelization is Kevin J. Anderson.

Anderson writes the Dune prequels with Frank Herbert’s son, Brian Herbert. He writes books in the Star Wars series, including the Jedi Academy Trilogy and Young Jedi Knights series featuring the twin children of Han Solo and Princess Leia. He also wrote three books based on “The X-Files” TV show, including Ground Zero, which I read when it came out back in 1995.

He even wrote a book on which he shares credit with L. Ron Hubbard that I’m curious about but not enough so that I want the Scientologists to come around pestering me.

And in his free time, he created his own genre series, The Saga of the Seven Suns.

Right now, his latest book is Enemies & Allies, a clever re-telling of the first time Batman and Superman met in the 1950s. A follow-up to his novel, The Last Days of Krypton, this one is a barnburner that brings in everybody you want from the Man of Steel and The Dark Knight families of characters.

Like most of Anderson’s books, once you start reading it, you won’t stop till you’re done.

Trina was a great guest the first time around, talking about her original comic book character, GoGirl! This time, she’s here to promote a new Fantagraphics collection of full color art by Nell Brinkley, drawn between 1913 and 1940. It’s a beautiful coffee table book laden with history and significance for both comics and advertising.

Paul Levine, ILLEGAL, SOLOMON VS. LORD novelist: Mr. Media Radio Interview

I’m Mr. Media—not Mr. Know-It-All.

So I hope I can be excused for not realizing what a clever, entertaining writer Paul Levine is, at least not before I read his latest novel, Illegal.

It’s a fast-paced, often funny, often frightening story that personalizes the case of illegal immigration, reducing it from faceless masses crossing the U.S.-Mexico border to just two frightened human beings, a mother and her teenage son. And, of course, the down on his luck American attorney, Jimmy Payne, who comes to their rescue in ways the legal system cannot.

I don’t hesitate to recommend that you read this book.

Not surprisingly, Levine is a former trial attorney. He seems to have found his calling in writing nonfiction: he is also the author of Solomon vs. Lord, The Deep Blue Alibi and Kill All the Lawyers. He also wrote for the CBS drama “Jag.” You can learn more about Levine at his personal website, paul-levine.com.

Craig Yoe has a dirty little secret.

Actually, it is Joe Shuster’s dirty little secret; Yoe just happens to be the researcher who uncovered and exposed it to the world.

Turns out that the artist and co-creator of Superman spent a few years in the 1950s, post-Man of Steel, churning out fetish girl art to earn a living. That’s the secret part—the dirty part is that Shuster was really quite good at it.

Yoe just published a new book, aptly titled Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman’s Co-creator Joe Shuster.

This is no minor discovery, either: Yoe enlisted none other than Marvel Comics longtime publisher, editor and writer Stan Lee to pen the book’s introduction.

Over the course of my youth I made a lot of promises to my mother.

Yes, mom, I promise I’ll bathe every day. And no, I won’t tell dad how the car door got that dent in it. Okay, I promise Ira will never know he’s adopted.

Oops.

But Sam Haskell took this whole thing a lot more seriously. He built a life and career on character and righteousness. That’s one thing if you’re a Scoutmaster, but he made it work in Hollywood as the long-time head of television for the William Morris Agency. And now he’s applying those same principles to the Miss America pageant.

Haskell is the author of a new book, Promises I Made My Mother, which takes those very same promises and wraps them around his personal life and career.

If you’re not in show business, you can be forgiven for not knowing Haskell’s name. But you’ll probably recognize the client of his who wrote the introduction: Ray Romano, star of the hit sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond.”

Will success spoil Lisa Lampanelli?

That’s what Howard Stern asked her in January 2009. He thinks that now that the standup comedian has hit the big time with her first HBO special, “Long Live the Queen,” on HBO, that it might be too much exposure for her extremely vulgar, awfully funny brand of humor.

Maybe he’s right. But maybe, just maybe, it will open a lot of new doors for Lampanelli, who has long been a regular on the roast circuit, ripping new you-know-whats for her fellow comedians and celebrities such as Pamela Anderson, Chevy Chase and William Shatner.

A word of warning for the faint-hearted Mr. Media listener: There are no censors on this show. Nobody will be bleeping Lisa, who is known to thrown around four and 12-letter words. She is free to let it rip here. So if you’re easily offended, switch shows now.
