AMD created a small number of limited edition TWKR processors expressly for the extreme overclocking community. Called the AMD Phenom II X4 42 Black Edition TWKR processor, it has a part number of 42 that means 4 cores at 2 GHz. Based on Deneb C2 core, it comes with an unlocked multiplier and a default vCore value of 1.44v. TWKR 42 features 6 MB shared of L3 cache, each individual core also features 64 KB of L1 data cache, 64 KB of L1 instruction cache, and 512 KB of L2 cache. It is not for sale, is provided as is and it's not covered by AMD’s product warranty. It seems that only 100 of these processors are going to be sold.

Over the past six months, we heard many rumors about the upcoming nVidia GT300 GPU. The last information surfaced on the web reveals that GT300 might feature a 512bit wide GDDR5 memory interface. If this is true, this would mean that nVidia has a playing field of eight 32bit memory controllers connecting to multiple 32 core clusters for a total of 512 cores. If the GT300 chip ends up connected to quad data rate memory at 1000MHz we'll have a memory bandwidth of 256GB/s per single GPU. At least from these little information leaks, we're looking at one beast of a GPU. GT300 is expected to be released in Q4 2009.

A lot has been said about ATI's RV790. Clues about the new gpu surfaced in the last November when was clear that AMD was working on a successor to the RV770. A german website, Hardware-Infos, reports that RV790 will be built on the newer improved 55 nm manufacturing process. The new gpu may get a little help from its superior silicon fabrication, foundry partner codename is 55GT, which makes it more expensive to manufacture. According to the source there are two RV790 engineering samples: a base model and an overclocked model. The base model comes with the same clock speeds as the RV770XT: 750/900 MHz (core/memory), while the overclocked model comes with clock speeds of 850/975 MHz (core/memory). The core voltage is 1.24V for the base model and 1.30V for the overclocked one. Products based on RV790 are expected by April.

Yesterday Intel introduced its plans concerning the upcoming Westmere family of processors, a set of processors built using the company's 32 nm second generation high-K silicon fabrication technology, based on the Nehalem micro architecture. This means that Intel will launch the first working 32 nm bassed microprocessor in both mobile and desktop systems by the end of the current year. The new process will minimize production costs and make the company ready to supply a large demand of chips. The increase in transistor count over its previous generation enables Intel to expand the SIMD instruction set beyond SSE 4.1 (presumably with SSE 4.2). Intel also added a brief note on seven new instructions (AES extensions) for accelerating encryption/decryption algorithms.

The new record of 47,026 points was made with a CrossFireX setup of two radeon HD4870X2 and a Core i7 975 XE running at 5.239 GHz.

Intel is going to launch a new batch of Core i7 920 processors, that have their stepping updated from the current C-0 to D-0. It seems that a motherboard bios update will be required to identify the new CPUs correctly. Intel will start shipping the new stepping on March 2nd.

Intel has launched a new dual core processor of the Core 2 Duo E8000 series, the E8700. Based on the Wolfdale core, with an FSB of 1,333 MHz and an FSB multiplier value of 10.5x, the new chip comes with a clock speed of 3.50 GHz and with 6 MB of L2 cache. Despite the 167 MHz increment over the E8600, the Thermal Design Power (TDP) rate is still 65W. Availability and pricing is still unknown since it is yet to be listed by computer hardware stores.

Intel is planning to counter the AMD Athlon Neo series CPUs, a set of low power mobile CPUs specifically designed for ultra thin notebooks. With a price range between netbooks and notebooks, ultra thin machines like the HP Pavilion dv2 are receiving a lot of attention from AMD with its Athlon Neo single core CPU, but Intel will soon get in the game with a set of CPUs that are similar to the one used in Apple's MacBook Air. The processors will come in a 22x22 mm packaging and are expected to include ULV chips with rated TDPs as low as 10W. No word yet on clocks or availability.
