Here’s a recent news item that came to me and grabbed my interest right away, because the dealer involved is right in my old home territory, Morris county, New jersey where I grew up. I’ve written often regarding the “for sure” bonafide savings GPS can bring to fleet management, but here’s up to date, real world testimony:

Automotive Vehicle and Parts Dealership Uses GPS and Push-to-Talk Services to Stay Competitive in Slowed Economy

SUNNYVALE, CA and BUTLER, NJ–(Marketwire – March 16, 2009) – Route 23 Ford, a wholesale vehicle parts dealer ranked 12th in nationwide Ford parts sales, has seen a dramatic increase in driver productivity and accountability through the use of TeleNav Track™, a cell phone-based GPS navigation and tracking service. The company is also using Nextel Direct Connect and wireless devices from Sprint for instant communication between drivers and headquarters employees.

"In the vehicle parts delivery business, drivers are often unexpectedly needed to pick up or drop off a part where they just came from," said Mark Steindler, parts manager for Route 23 Ford. "With TeleNav Track, our back office can see where all our drivers are at once and can redirect them in mid-route, if necessary. As a result, our driver efficiency is up by an average of 15 percent."

Route 23 Ford, part of the Route 23 Auto Mall LLC dealership group, is the largest wholesale parts dealer in the greater New York area, doing business with companies such as American Transit and the city of New York which includes the FDNY and the NYPD. A few years ago, after noticing a decline in vehicle and warranty sales, Route 23 Ford recognized an industry shift. Vehicle quality was continually improving, creating less of a need for vehicle replacement and a greater demand for parts and service. This made the industry even more competitive, leading Route 23 Ford to take action.

By deploying TeleNav Track on employees’ GPS-enabled Sprint wireless phones, Route 23 Ford has seen drastic improvements in fleet productivity. Prior to using the service, the company lacked accurate knowledge of where its parts drivers were at any given time. This made it difficult to determine the most appropriate driver to dispatch for unexpected deliveries and resulted in wasted fuel and employee time.

With TeleNav Track, Route 23 Ford has better field oversight and management, eliminating costly guesswork and enabling the company to hold its drivers to an even higher standard of accountability. With TeleNav Track, the back office is able to print driver activity reports, which can help in better management of business and personnel matters. …

Now this article leaves me with two questions:

To the sales force at Route 23 Ford? Are you paying attention to your Parts department? How many of these proven units are you selling along with your new truck sales. Another proven way to increase profit in these hard times is to sell the customer what he needs to make the best use possible of his fleet.

To you, my reader .. are you profiting from GPS tracking your fleet yet? And if not, why not? Waiting for the economy to pick up is the absolute worst excuse. You need the 25% or more boost in your bottom line that GPS tracking can give you from day one — and there are plenty of low-down, no-down deals available from qualified GPS suppliers.

There are m,any good suppliers out there. Here are two that I recommend without hesitation (and with out any remuneration as well, I might add, I mention them only because I know they are good)

My friend Rob at: http://www.gpsinsight.com/

LONDON, England (CNN) — A new shoe outfitted with a GPS chip aims to offer peace of mind to Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers. It’s common for people with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia to wander from their homes. The embedded GPS tracking system will allow the wearer of the shoe to be located instantly online and for their whereabouts to be monitored in real time. The shoe may offer hope to the growing number of people with Alzheimer’s disease. More than 26 million people worldwide live with Alzheimer’s, and the figure is set to exceed 106 million by 2050, according to researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Health. "This could not only save lives but potentially save governments billions in search and rescue operations," Andrew Carle, a professor at George Mason University who was an adviser for the project, told CNN. Patients of Alzheimer’s, the leading cause of dementia, can easily become confused or disoriented, and it’s common for them to wander from their home and not be able to find their way back. Read more .

I frequently get queries here at the GPS Tracking ROI blog regarding ways to track individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or other problems that may cause them to wander and get out of touch.

There are a number of solutions out there, some sponsored and endorsed by communities and support groups. Most solutions on the market today are “bird dog” style devices … that is the patient wars some sort of transmitter and when they go missing, searchers carry a receiver that (hopefully) picks up the signals from the patient’s device and helps them follow it to the patient’s locations.

This technology has a couple significant advantages. First, it works any time the patient isn’t completely shielded from electronic emissions. In a building, in deep woods, on a bus, no problem, if the search team can receive the signal, they can find the “wanderer”.

Second the devices are small, light and relatively cheap.

Third, use of the location technology is typically under the control of police or other first responder organizations so random or nefarious location attempts are minimal or none existent.

But major problems in this type location are huge.

First and foremost, if the patient gets out of range of the homing device, they are gone … vanished. No chance of finding them unless they wander back in range.

Second, because they tracking device is typically under government agency control, every ‘wander off’ has to be handled by first responder professionals who might well be needed elsewhere for more life critical situations.

And third, there is no level of response option. Find the person or don’t go find him,. No possibility of more subtle monitoring like a loved one being able to tell the patient is still in their nursing home, at the park where they like to spend a few hours, in the library where they sometimes spend an afternoon, etc.

Properly designed GPS tracking equipment can eliminate all these negatives and work to the advantage of the patient’s family or the care giving agency. Wearable, non-intrusive GPS tracking deices are what’s needed.

They are coming on the market now, but all too slowly in my view. The GPS shoe idea looks very promising. In the meantime, some of the devices in our GPS store or the very promising BrickHouse Child Locator might help.

Few have escaped hearing the tragic story of how Air France flight 477 disappeared in to Atlantic a thousand miles or so east of Brazil on a flight to Paris. The Brazilian military and other organizations are putting in near-heroic and not unfruitful efforts in find the remains of the passengers and plane, but as in all such tragedies their efforts seem to take too long and produce too little in the way of answers.

I’ve noticed in the past day or two a lot of activity in the general interest media regarding GPS and why GPS couldn’t just find flight 477 when it first went missing, why airline flights over the ocean aren’t routinely tracked by GPS, and today my BS detector went off when I noticed some (undoubtedly Beltway Bandit financed, in some hidden way) out and out US government propaganda using the death of the Air France passengers and crew to promote one of Washington’s most oversold and technically flawed schemes ever (friends, after you get done paying for this boondoggle, you’ll think $600 toilet seats are a bargain, believe me). So I now expect this post will grow into several installments. So be it, the longest journey begins with but a single step, as they say. Good example of media GPS tracking speculation here

Let’s work through some of the more common questions circulating today, working from the standpoint of most general interest to most esoteric. This first article will certainly be of use to media types and fellow authors who want to find out a few of the basic things I virtually guarantee they currently don’t know about GPS and air commerce.

Why Can’t GPS Find Flight 477?

That one is the simplest to explain, but perhaps the most difficult for the non-techies out there to grasp. GPS can’t find Flight 477 because GPS can’t find anything. Yep, you read it here first, “Hey Joe, I just saw this nut on the Internet who says GPS can’t find anything. What an idiot!” Well nut job I may be, I’ll leave that to the shrinks. But idiot I ain’t, at least regarding GPS. In spite of the near universally held belief that the GPS (what most people say when the mean the NAVSTAR GPS, a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), operated by the USAF and commonly described as 24 satellites circling the globe) does not track, or find anything. Each active satellite sends out a precision timing pulse and some other navigation-related technical information, and that is that. The satellites don’t track anyone or anything, in fact the signal between the satellites and whomever might be using their signal is purposely made one way .. the GPS satellites can’t receive any data from ‘clients’ using their signals to navigate, so even the CIA or some other fictional more secret agency can’t ‘track’ a single thing through GPS … period. Now you may think I am mincing words or splitting hairs here, but the truth is, unless people get this basic concept in their brain and de-emphasize the fiction about GPS they routine get from TV, the movies and even certain US government officials, there are a number of important follow-on concepts here that are going to remain misunderstood. Lives and billions of dollars, actually, ride on this concept, and I see the problem getting a lot worse rather than showing signs of improvement.

OK, so if GPD can’t track anything, why is the title of this blog GPS Tracking? Glad you asked that, it’s the first step in understanding what is really going on here versus the common misconceptions. Follow me through on this, it is not really too difficult.

Step One: The GPS satellites send out a receive only (broadcast) signal.

Step Two: A receiver sense this signal and processes the data to solve an equation. The result of that equation is the position of the receiver in space. (Typically on. or close above, the surface of the earth)

Step Three: The solution to the position equation is converted into something human-usable. A display of the user’s position on an electronic map. In simple terms this is GPS navigation in a nutshell. The map may be on the dashboard of your car, on the screen of your cell phone, on the monitor of your laptop, on a navigational display in the cockpit of an airplane, or you name it, but one thing is always true … up until this point in our mini-course, only you, the user, knows where you are. No one else is tracking you or has the capability to track you … period. The act of fixing your position or navigating with the NAVSTAR system and a “GPS Receiver” is an independent, user discrete function. The customer knows where he is, no one else does.

Step Four: Sometimes just knowing where you are is all you need to know. That’s why, in fact, the vast majority of GPS products on the market are deceive/navigate only devices. They don’t get down below Step Three, above. But there are many cases where the user wants others to know where s/he is, wants to be tracked in other words. This is most commonly what we mean when we say “GPS Tracking”, and this is the aspect of the overall GPS utility most variable, and most misunderstood.

Let’s go back to the GPS-driven navigational display in the aircraft instrument panel we used as an example above. This seems like the most germane example since we started out talking about the loss of Flight 477. Did Flight 477 have such a GPS-driven navigational display?

I don’t have access to the specific equipment list of Flight 477 so the answer to the question I posed above is. yes, no or maybe. The majority of commercial airliners flying today do not have GPS navigation aboard. This likely will change in the future … especially if the US government succeeds in promoting and ill-advised monstrosity they call Next Gen … which the referenced GPS capability article shows they are apparently grinding their personal axe on the bones of flight 477’s victims. Many smaller business and private aircraft do have GPS navigation receivers/display, but the important point to wind up this install of my series on is that it matters not if Air France had GPS navigation aboard or not, because no one was in a position to track them anyway.

"The technology’s there — we’ve had this stuff for 15 years and little’s happened," said Michael Boyd, a Colorado-based airline analyst. "My BlackBerry can be used to track me, so why can’t we do it with planes?"

Not quite, Mr. Boyd, you’re on the right track, believe me, but your “analysis” has a few holes in it. In order to make a GPS Tracking system out of a “common GPS”, you need two important components we haven’t mentioned yet and which no one, including the Next gen spin-meisters has really considered. I’ll return to those issues next installment, meanwhile just remember this key point:

GPS can’t find Flight 477 because “GPS’ does not track commercial airliners in general and over the oceans and polar regions in particular. “Common GPS” can not do so, period, the mechanisms and physics aren’t there. Commercial airlines could be tracked with varying degrees of effort and expense, and next installment we’ll consider some of the pros and cons and costs.

It is highly likely that you have glimpsed one of the many Garmin commercials that have been highly visible near the Holiday Season. A typical version of one commercial shows a man who has become lost while doing Christmas shopping. As he drives around in his car searching for the way home he sees a number of familiar Christmas characters hitchhiking along the same streets. The driver ends up giving rides to the assorted group of characters while an unseen background chorus sings that cute Garmin jingle. See what can be avoided when you have a Garmin Sat Nav; who knows what kinds of characters may be waiting for the next unsuspecting driver.

The point hits home for us though, and it is easy to see that Garmin Sat Nav devices are the most popular navigation devices on the market today. They come in many assortments and styles and can be a very practical and smart looking addition to your car. A Garmin Sat Nav device can be a boon when trying to find your way around the city or place you arent familiar with.

The history of Garmin Sat Nav started in 1989 with a handful of employees who thought vertical integration was very important. Vertical integration means they design, market, build their products themselves. By 2007, the workforce at Garmin topped over 7,000 and continues to grow to this day.

Why Garmin Sat Nav? Garmin has always kept the customer in mind when designing their Garmin Sat Nav devices. Garmin Sat Nav devices boast easy-to-use menus and practical features. The devices themselves look very attractive and can be mounted just about any where on your dashboard within easy reach.

Why is it unique to use Garmin range of GPS? The features of the Garmin Sat Nav devices make them unique. There are split screen views, traffic alerts, touch screen navigation and even models that offer lane changing suggestions. They even have text to speech options which tell you when to turn.

There is no easier way to get directions and driving information than by using your Garmin Sat Nav. With an electronic navigator in your car you can settle back and let the Garmin Sat Nav map the course to any location you have in mind. The text to speech application has quickly become one of the publics favorite features. A Garmin Sat Nav is portable, powerful and adaptable. They are now used by pilots, boat captains and hikers who want to be sure of finding their way through unfamiliar terrain.

Many people wonder what the future of Garmin Sat Nav devices may still hold. The models made for cars have already become top sellers but there are many other applications that can make use of these navigational aids. One of the areas that is just starting to make use of this type of software is the market involving mobile hand held phones and computers. The sales of cell phones and other personal hand held devices are booming and Garmin is already poised to make their mark in this area.

Garmin will certainly cut deeply into the cell phone GPS market thanks to the reliable and efficient technology it employs. Today Garmin navigation devices are the clear cut winner in the consumer market because of the superiority to other brands. When you need to know which way to go you can count on a Garmin Sat Nav to give you the right answer.

As technology continues advancing in leaps and bounds, it’s undeniable that for the vast majority of us, the quality of our lives has improved significantly. In the not too distant past for example, concerns regarding getting lost prevented the average person from exploring too far a field. Nowadays however, all that has changed thanks to the availability of GPS handheld receivers. Providing you have a GPS handheld receiver, you can explore the world to your heart’s content, safe in the knowledge that you’re not at risk of getting lost. Of course, satellite navigation systems such as these were invented years ago in the 1960s but in those early days, their use was for the most part restricted to the military.

Looking similar to some wristwatches, handheld GPS receivers are small devices which are loaded with Global Positioning System technology. Their phenomenal popularity is hardly surprising, considering they can be used for such a wide variety of activities such as, hiking, climbing, trekking, safaris, fishing, hunting, and etc. As could be expected, handheld receivers are now also manufactured for specific purposes, such as the popular hunting GPS Handheld Receiver which is available in a camouflage finish and features a built in compass. Not only are these receivers extremely lightweight, but the also include a bunch of features such as graphics for all locations, up 2000 weight point storage and a ten to fifty retraceable path feature.

Though you can get a simple handheld GPS receiver to merely find your way home in about $100 there are many additional features available in many different handheld GPS receiver models like:

Map database; Voice activated GPS; WAAS technology, Reflection-less screen; Theft prevention functions; an option for personalized screen icons; MP3 capability.

Everyone has their own reasons for wanting a GPS handheld receiver, some of which are:

1) If you’ve ever been lost before, you’ll know you normally have two options. You can either ask for directions, or you can phone for help. With a GPS receiver however, you can immediately determine where you are and you can also get directions to where you want to go.

2. If you are late for somewhere and you want to reach on time, you need to find the shortest and quickest route available. The handheld GPS receiver can help you to find the best and shortest route possible.

3. Lets assume that you have shifted to a new place and have an emergency where you need to go to a doctor. How do you do that? Where do you find a doctor? With the handheld GPS receiver, you can locate a doctor or even a gas pump if you need. You dont have to ask anyone.

4) Because of their small size they can be taken everywhere with you so never again will you be unable to determine your way.

5. When you are traveling with your kids and family then you need to know the emergency services and the way to get to them. Carrying and scurrying for a car or map in your purse is time consuming. With this device all you need to do is to strap it to your wrist and find out the required information!

Yes a GPS Handheld Receiver is a desirable device, but over and above that, it’s a safety device which one should always have on hand.

Ferdinand Magellan was the first explorer to circumnavigate the globe. He did so under the Spanish crown in the 16th century. Since that time, the name Magellan has stood for navigation far and wide. Is it any wonder that there is a firm for global tracking services, therefore, named Magellan? Is it any wonder that the Magellan Roadmate series includes prime features for easy navigation and easy use?

The Magellan Roadmate series consists of several models of handheld GPS devices for the North American continent including the United States. Each one has ease of use through their interactive displays that are so simple to understand, you really don’t even need to read the directions! The common features include six million points of interest (POI). With these points, you can click on the icon and the GPS will give you directions, including which exit to take, as well as other helpful information about the locations. POIs include gas stations, hotels, ATMs that are searchable by category, name, and city or nearest to your position.

Other features are listed below. The home icon lets you select any location as your home base. QuickSpell is a Magellan Roadmate GPS system feature that checks your spelling as you type, and can quickly search addresses and POIs. SayWhere is a text-to-voice feature that can provide street names and step by step directions to get you to your next location. SmartDetour and Auto re-route are two of the best features to help you avoid heavy traffic, construction, or road closures. The Magellan Roadmate helps you navigate around these frustrating situations, and will re-evaluate your route to keep you on track, even as you turn off the original route. Auto NightView is a great feature that automatically adjusts the LCD screen brightness and color for optimal viewing in low light settings. All Roadmate GPS systems have address books available so that you can save repeat information for future trips. This way, you avoid having to repeatedly search for the same POI.

There are a number of other great features that aren’t common to all models. As an example, the Roadmate 1430 has a useful tow truck icon to indicate your exact location so that tow trucks can get to you quickly and easily in case of an emergency. The 1430, 1400, and 1200 models also feature 2D and 3D views for enhanced route visualization. Every Magellan Roadmate comes standard with detailed and accurate maps for every country in North America, plus Hawaii and Puerto Rico, and pinpoints your location precisely to within 3 meters in real time. Each unit has rechargeable batteries that last for up to three hours before the next recharge. The Magellan Roadmate GPS creates customizable travel routes, and some models can hold as many as twenty locations at one time!

Users love the flexibility and grand detail received in using these sleek little compact GPSs, especially since you can take them anywhere! You can also attach it to your windshield or dash with accessories that comes with. There is a volume adjustment so you can hear around noisy situations, and the level will come back down when it becomes quieter. Additional maps are available for download for the UK and European countries, as well. For everyday life, excursions into traffic or your own little epic adventure, the Magellan Roadmate GPS is a fantastic buy!

I’ve been meaning to post on this current issue for a few days now. I came across this excellent summary from my blogging colleague John Ewing, the Aviation Mentor, so I might as well point it out to you and avoid covering a lot of the ground that John has already written informatively and sensibly on.

I particularly like John’s blog as he is one of a select few who actually writes about some of the real-world uses of GPS rather than the toy aspects so many focus on. GPS is so much more than a dashboard car navigator or a pocket caching device, and it’s hard to explain things so that the average person gets the picture.

John is a professional pilot and Gold Seal flight instructor and he specializes in modern aircraft “glass dashes” which typically include integrated GPS systems. Usually worth a read even if you don’t have wings.

The issue at hand is that the US General Accounting Office (GAO) has recently released a report Global Positioning System: Significant Challenges in Sustaining and Upgrading Widely Used Capabilities that is pretty critical of the USAF (the folks who actual build and run the GPS for the world) and in particular their efforts in getting the IIF (Block I Follow-on) birds built, tested and launched.

As a former USAF employee, directly involved with the GPS program since the days there was only one satellite on orbit, I’m a bit troubled too. I’m disappointed by two things, two issues that are in some ways diametrically opposed to each other.

First I have been troubled for years by the way senior levels of US government have treated the NAVSTAR program. I am a firm believer that my former USAF colleagues can accomplish most any reasonable task, but the mission of the USAF is to fly and fight. The GPS is a national, nay, world public utility, and it’s contrary to logic and good leadership practices to just tell the USAF, “Okay general, while you are at it, promoting political change in SW Asia, providing the only space object catalog orbital control utility for the world and keeping those 50 year old KC-135 tankers in the air, take care of this little GPS project too.”

The GPS, like the Internet, is another US military project that has expanded beyond all rational expectations and is being left to run as best it can. Where is the higher level national interest and the world interest in these now essential international systems. The European Union over the past few years have shown true “raised middle finger” leadership by wasting billions of Euros on their competitive and ill-advised Galileo program, essential just so they can be ‘different’. What is needed her is cooperative leadership, not national pride and flag waving. This deserves attention at much higher levels than the GAO.

As an aside I get a bit of a chuckle out of John’s concerns about the age of the current GPS constellation … “That means about a third of the GPS satellites are between 12 and 19 years old; a sobering thought” … valid concern, but how much more sobering to consider the age of the existing USAF aircraft and missile combat forces .. the GPS turns out to be one of the youngest and most technology ‘fresh’ systems out there.

The second issue that concerns me that the GAO report draws attention to at the intellectual level is faulty expectations. The GPS today is exceeding expectations in virtually all aspects. The life of the satellites has been prolonged far beyond the dreams of the original designers … to a large degree by the ingenuity and dedication of the folks in the 2 SOPS out there on the barren eastern plains of Colorado. As an example, technicians in the 2 SOPS developed a technique years ago to ‘recondition’ batteries aboard the satellites remotely … one significant factor in the record levels of longevity.

Also, since the first Gulf war, the accuracy of the navigation solution in the areas of combat has been greatly enhanced by ‘touching’ each bird (making more frequent ground to space contacts to enhance clock accuracy) bringing the overall accuracy in the area of interest up to better than 5 times the system specified figure. A side effect from this work has been a sort of artificial world-wide increase in observed performance, leading to greater and greater expectations.

How would anyone actually codify these efforts much less write them into a contract to operate the system? My fear is, at some date that may be closer than we think, the Air Force is going to be forced to cut back on this labor-intensive ‘hand tuning’ and the system overall will revert to a level of performance far closer to its design document specifications. The USAF will still be doing a highly creditable job … they always do .. but there may be a lot of customers who have grown used to getting a lot of extra performance for free that may become quite disappointed.

Here’s a great resource that shows a lot of data about the age of the GPS fleet. Some areas for concern? Indeed, but fear not, I think the system will stay healthy through the foreseeable future … there are a lot of my former colleagues, Civil Service, officer, enlisted and contractor personnel who are well aware of how critical the GPS is, even though it is actually so far outside their “job description”. Hat’s off, guys, sometimes I wish I was still there.

For boaters and other people who navigate some water areas, the Marine GPS systems have been the most helpful tool nowadays. Marine GPS navigation is useful in many different purposes, especially for people who need to locate directions and right positioning of a certain location when boating or fishing.

Marine GPS-History:

While it wasnt that long ago that boaters or mariners consulted star charts and latitude/longitude numbers to figure out their way back to land, Marine GPS navigation changed the need for the inaccurate tracking system that some could not figure out. GPS or global positioning systems came into vogue after the launch of satellites that could send a signal of latitude and longitude locations to figure exactly where anything was back on Earth. This principal has been used in fishing sonars and marine GPS systems, that use anywhere from 12 to 24 satellites to figure out positioning.

Why Using Marine GPS Navigation Systems?

The Marine GPS has been useful for every individual as they can easily navigate the place where they are heading whether they are driving, flying, boating, or just walking. More than that, GPS is used for safety purposes, especially during stormy seasons or when you got lost somewhere and you need to locate directions or alternate routes. The marine GPS devices can receive signals of tides and storms that might harm the boat or marine vessel.

Marine GPS-Future

The maritime technology and the boating and fishing industries have benefited a lot from the marine GPS systems. The devices are easy to use and carry wherever you want to and use it for whatever reason you want to. There are some marine GPS that can do a lot of functions for your different needs and lots of the available devices can store as much destinations as needed in its memory. Manufacturers are still developing new improvements to suffice the needs of every one regarding the right global positioning.

Marine GPS-Choosing and Buying One

There are many things to consider when choosing the right Marine GPS device. You should determine the reason why you would need one. Research for it carefully and check all the other functions available in the device which can be helpful for you in other ways aside from marine navigation. Consider also the necessary accessories and add-ons that you might need when you use the Marine GPS. There are affordable devices that you can buy for simple fishing or navigation purposes, but if you are planning for a more extensive navigation, choose the expensive one with more functionality.

For all water navigation, the Marine GPS navigation systems have met the requirements in providing essential functions. Now that a device is easy to access and the GPS feature is available in almost every cell phones and laptops, there is no need for you to worry of directions and safety while on sail.
