Granted 18 was 9 years ago (ahh how did that happen?!), but I still found this list of 91 Things Every 18-Year-Old Should Know quite insightful. Most, if not all, of the things on the list are pretty common sense but a) I love lists & b) sometimes it’s nice to have a reminder.

My fav’s from the list:

• 35) “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” - Jim Rohn
• 36) If you want to do something exceptional, don’t expect anyone to believe you can do it until you’ve done it. Unless you’re already perceived as exceptional, most people won’t believe in you. That’s doubly true for the people who know you best and have therefore seen you at your most mediocre, like your parents, family, and friends.
• 45) “If you want your life to have impact, focus it! Stop dabbling. Stop trying to do it all. Do less. Prune away even good activities and do only that which matters most. Never confuse activity with productivity. You can be busy without a purpose, but what’s the point?” — Rick Warren
• 61) It’s generally a very good idea to avoid writing email, letters, blog posts, or even having conversations with people when you are upset or very emotional. If you do anyway, usually, once you’ve cooled off, you’ll wish you had handled things differently.
• 68) There is a lot to that old saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who know.” Use that to your advantage when you can. A handshake and a hello at the office, a quick introduction at church, or a short conversation before dinner can get you more jobs, help, and good advice than you ever thought possible.

• Are You Who You Want To Be: Jamie Varon asks us if it’s time for a change … "In the daydreams, I’m the person I want to be and if I’m still in my head, then I’m not that person. Why would I have to daydream if I was just out doing it? It’s ridiculous and I need to leap. Do you need to leap?"
• Focus On the Upside: Advice for Gen Y About Taking Risks: This post was not written by a gen yer but she gives us tips to focus on the upside, especially in an anxious market that may reinforce your habit of playing it safe.
• Gen Y needs boundaries for action: I find that often when I’m reading Rebecca’s blog I feel like she’s writing a conversation I’ve been having my head at that time. This post is a definite example of an internal debate I’ve been having lately - the 20 something struggle between boundaries and freedom.
• You May Say I’m a Dreamer: First of all anyone who quotes John Lennon is automatically cool in my book. And secondly, I enjoyed Susan’s perspective watching a young girl play in a park while she was on her lunch break … "Once upon a time, I was that little girl, longing for playtime, loving and living in the moment, wishing on stars and believing that anything was possible"
• What Inspires You?: a guest post from 22 year old Argentinean blogger Carlos Miceli- this post discusses change as the element of inspiration in his life. "The thing about change is that it always brings the new. It brings potential. I have seen that with every life-changing decision that I made, I faced fear, uncertainty and doubt, but most importantly, excitement."

The hunt to find other 20 something bloggers was quite an adventure. I found a few on BlogHer and a few on MyBlogLog but for the most part there wasn’t an easy way to connect with my peers.

It seems like these days, I’m having the reverse issue … I find myself regularly subscribing to another gen y blog quite frequently. So I’ve decided to start a new series (that I’d love for everyone to join in on) called In Case You Missed It. My intention with this is to post tidbits and links from posts I’ve found interesting relevant to the 20 something community. This is different than just recommending other blogs to read because I’ll be pointing out specific articles that speak to me. My plan is to do this weekly, but I’m not making any promises. Since there is so much great content out there it would be great if some of you did something similar on your blog.

So here are some great reads you may have missed from the first week of May:

• Is Grad School Right For You? My Friends and I as Examples: this topic always jumps out at me because I am having this debate with myself. This particular post lists several scenarios of people who are living in various versions of the debate to continue their education (or not). In the end it seems everything I read says you have to decide for your lifestyle and job what’s best for you, but I enjoyed having real life examples to compare to.
• Live a Remarkable Life: Though this post is not specifically career related I would say right now many people are feeling stuck or hopeless in their current career situation. The premise of Cody’s post can be summed up with this sentence: you can either sit around and wait for cool shit to happen to you, or you can take a pro-active role in opening your life up to possibility.
• I Want The Job! When Do I Contact HR?: This is a video post definitely worth the 1:43 for anyone who is currently interviews for jobs. (found via Gradversity)
• Setting Priorities 101: Plan Each Day to Ensure Success: I’m not sure why I love little planning methods so much (especially those with catchy names) but Anthony’s ABCDE Method of Prioritizing is worth a glance. I have no doubt that my day would be much more productive if I put this system in place and stuck with it.
• Top 10 Things That I Wish I Had Known When I Graduated College: I graduated college 4 years ago and I will certainly agree there are a few of these that I wish I had known then (or even while I was in college!).
• Make Your Career Recession-Proof: everywhere I turn I see posts about the recession and the job industry and usually I ignore them (because I’m an optimist and I don’t like all the negativity) but I will say, despite the title the advice in this post is really just great advice for how to get ahead (and stay ahead) in your career.
• Finding Work Abroad: The fact that I’m linking to this may seem totally out of left field, but lately I’m been on a kick that this would be the best time in life to pickup and go somewhere just for fun. Whatdya think? There’s designers in Italy right?
• The “I Can Do Anything,” Freedom in Your 20’s: This post is a perfect tie in for the others that I’ve chosen. I am at a serious crossroads right now I’m deciding between grad school, moving or who knows whatelse. The who knows whatelse is where the opportunities (or problems, however you look at it) exist. I agree with Grace "these wonder younger years, are times to discover, to lose, to learn and grow."
• Personal Branding Further Inflates Our Sense of Entitlement: "After spending so much time proving to the world that you are the smartest, savviest and perfect candidate able to do anything you want, the worst starts to happen: You start to believe it yourself." I’m linking to this because I disagree with it but it’s a good conversation piece. If I ever strongly agree or disagree with a post then in my opinion it’s worth passing on.

Mom’s are notorious for advice giving - both when you want it and when you don’t. I’d be curious to know what is the best advice your mother has given you?

Advice from my mom:

• Always thank people when they go out of their way to do something for you - even if it’s in a form of a quick email.
• Everything is a teaching tool and a learning device - any time life isn’t going the way I’d like it to I am reminded by my mom that there are lessons to learn in everything.
• Rejection is Protection - I’m not sure where my mom get’s all of her rhyming antidotes but this is one of her favorites. She says if you don’t get that job you want or that guy doesn’t ask you out again that rejection is protection and there is something better yet to come.
• Ask for clarity and courage - when I’m having a hard time making a big decision my mom advises me to pray for clarity and courage. She says it’s important to ask for the two together so that you can act on what shows up. For example if you’re in a bad relationship and deciding whether or not to leave, if you just ask for clarity chances are you’ll get 57 red flags in your face but if you don’t have the to courage to leave then the clarity serves no purpose.
• You must have the 4 Cs for a relationship to work (communication, compatibility, common interest, & chemistry) - she says if one of the four is missing your relationship will feel like a table missing a leg.
• The way you do one thing is the way you do everything - my mom uses this one very regularly. This statement is in relation to a person’s character.
