Here's a quick guide to get started on posting and replying on any of the FreewareBB forum areas. The forum area's include things like our Info Forums, Community Forums and Comments Forums.

1. First of all decide which forum it is you wish to post in and go to that forum, such as Info, Community or Comments (note that the comments forums are accessible from the download pages when you wish to comment on a particular download). In our example, we're going to the "Community Forums".
Fig 1

2. OK, we're now in the "Community Forums" below, and we're going to make a new post in the "Hints, Help, Tips & Advice" section. We enter that forum by simply pressing on it.
Fig 2

3. Now we see a list of those post's already in that forum, and we can also see the "New topic" button at the top-right, to start a new post we hit that button.
Fig 3

4. On the post screen we can now start to enter our post details, such as the title and description and we can also choose to include any of the shown smiley's or other code but for now we're only really interested in getting a title and description.
Fig 4

5. Scrolling further down the page we have more options which should generally be left as they are. If you want to include a 'post icon' simply choose one. This post icon will be visible when others are viewing the list of post's available in your chosen forum (like the view in Fig 3 above). To see how your post will look before actually submitting it, you can hit the "Preview Post" button. When you are happy with the post details, you simply hit the "Post New Topic" button and depending on your membership level on our site your submission will either go live straight away or will be queued for approval.
Fig 5

6. Now, in the case of replying to an existing post, which could include you own, you need to be viewing the post you want to reply to. We've chosen a post below in Fig 6 and at the top right hand corner we can see the "Reply" and "New topic" button. Hitting the "New topic" button is another way to start a post in that area but in this case we're going to reply to this topic so we hit the "Reply" button.
Fig 6

7. When replying to post's it's pretty much identical to starting a post although you won't be able to specify a title for the post as one already exist's, but everything else is the same where you simply enter the details of your reply in the blank area. Once you've entered your reply, scroll down again and this time you'll see an "Add reply" button and that's what you hit to submit your reply. Again, you have the option to preview your post before actually submitting it.
Fig 7

8. There is also a "fast reply" function for all topics on our site and you can find this at the very end of the post you wish to reply to as in Fig 8 below. Using this method of reply is great when you're not interested in adding any special functions to your reply but can still be used to add emoticons, hyperlinks, and text features such as bold, underline, etc and this type of reply usually works best for most people.
Fig 8

So, there we have it, how to start and reply to post's on FreewareBB ...
Look forward to seeing your post's soon

Why am I restricted on FreewareBB?

Restrictions on FreewareBB can fall into a few categories:

BANNED - If you decide to break any of our rules then you may find yourself in this category, and as a consequence will have zero access to this site.
UNVALIDATED MEMBER - This is when you have registered for an account on our site, but haven't yet confirmed your registration using the email we sent (see below for more details)
RESTRICTED - If, for some other reason, we feel your account isn't, or can't conform to the standard we would expect, you may find your member account in the restricted group (see below for more details)

UNVALIDATED MEMBER
When you register for an account on FreewareBB, we will send you an email (usually instantly) to confirm your registration. Within the email you will find a validation link, which you must click to complete the registration process. Until you do this you will have limited access on our site and all unvalidated accounts are removed from our system automatically after 30 days. If you have not received a validation email from us, log into our site using the details you provided at registration and click the "resend validation" link at the top right-hand corner of the screen (next to your username). If you still do not receive a validation email from us, you may need to CONTACT US as it would appear you are not able to receive mail from us.

RESTRICTED
The main reason for finding yourself in this group is that email messages from our site are no longer reaching you and instead are coming back to us as "not deliverable". If we continued sending emails to those email addresses which cannot receive them, we then run the risk of our email server being considered a spam server and we could see ourselves banned from sending mail to many ISP's or email providers.

It could be your email provider has wrongly classified us as spammers, which I'm sure all our members will agree that we most definately are not, or it could be you have wrongly classified mail from us as spam. Other reasons why mail from us isn't being accepted by your mail account could include things like your mailbox is full or has been disabled because you haven't accessed it in a while!.

If you are in the restricted group then you will be severely limited in what you can and cannot do on our site which is purely to avoid someone setting up a temp email account and then abandoning it only to start spamming on our site. Here's what you can do to rectify the issue:

1. If receiving mail from us or being restricted on our site doesn't bother you, then you really don't need to do anything although we feel you could be missing out on many opportunities and important announcements because of it,
2. If you do want to sort the issue, the first step would be to contact the people responsible for your email, such as your ISP and explain to them you are unable to receive mail from freewarebb.com. If you believe the issue no longer exist's you are free to CONTACT US and let us know where we will send you a test message. If you receive an email from us all is well again but if we receive a mail from your email provider (these emails are automated) telling us the email was undeliverable then we will have no choice but to place you on restriction again until resolved.
3. If you have previously terminated or discontinued your email address, it's worthwhile re-registering for an alternative email account with your mail provider and then update your member account on our site with the new email address then let us know about the changes and we will re-test your account.
4. Finally, pay particular attention to emails that may be in your "junk" or "spam" folders, as if mail from us is in there this may be the reason we are not able to send emails to you. Always mark mail from us as "not junk" or "not spam" to allow messages to get through to you .

Please note this issue does not relate to those who opt NOT to receive emails from us via their control panel.

As always, we are happy to help anyone experiencing difficulties and please let us know if you require any assistance throughout this matter.
Kind Regards
Marko

Many Emails Still Not Getting Through!

Unfortunately, our old email problem has surfaced once again although we feel now that the main bulk of the issue seems to lay with the email holders themselves. Many members have chosen to sign up with "throwaway" email accounts and simply abandon them which now means when freewarebb send emails to members we are receiving a whole heap of NDR's which is clogging up our systems. Therefore, we now have no alternative but to mark these accounts as "Email Bouncers" which means they will be excluded from future emails from us and the member accounts themselves will be highly limited on our site.

We are limiting these accounts purely for safety reasons as when people use "throwaway" email accounts it could be they simply don't know whether the site they are signing up for will spam them or it could be for other, more sinister reasons (i.e. they intend to spam the site).

If you find that your member account has been marked as an "Restricted" incorrectly, unfortunately there is little we can do about it as we have went to great lengths to ensure our site remains in line with the policies of all email providers and ISP's and we feel we have done all we can therefore future email issue's will need to be addressed between yourself and your own email provider or ISP.

It is regrettable that we have to take this action although we simply do not have the resources or time to constantly battle with everyone's email systems in an environment where legitimate websites such as ours cannot compete against the ever increasing and changing policies put in place by the big email providers who, in our opinion, are doing more to dissuade the good guys than they are to fight to spammers.

Over and out!
Marko

Unlike others, we DO NOT award software because we want the author to place a link to us on their site, we award software which has stood out or proved very popular with our visitors and members.

Similarly, favourable reviews in our Reviews section also contribute to freeware receiving our Featured award so if you consider your favourite freeware title should be tagged as Featured you can write a review and we'll give it some serious consideration

Well done to those authors who have already received the award, a complete rundown of which you can find HERE.

Marko

Despite our continued efforts to conform with the major free email account providers it appears that mail from FreewareBB is still not being received by many. We currently have a large number of unvalidated users on our site who we presume are not receiving our validation email in order to confirm their accounts. We also notice that multiple subscribers to our daily update service are also unvalidated.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
If you are receiving emails from us, please ensure these emails are not delivered to your 'junk' or 'spam' folders and if they are mark our emails as 'NOT SPAM' or 'SAFE'. This is particularly important for Hotmail, Yahoo and AOL email users as feedback such as this can help determine a domains trust.

If you are not receiving emails from us, yet would expect to, please contact your email provider and explain this to them. An important note to remember is that we ONLY send email to those who opt in to receive it. In the case of members, they must validate their account first via email and there is a clear choice to "receive emails from admins" or not and each email we send to members has details of how to stop receiving such. For subscribers to our daily updates service, again, they must validate their subscription via email first and similarly all emails sent have clear instructions on how to unsubscribe.

We do not, never have, and never will send unsolicited emails as we hate them as much as you do although we go to great lengths to ensure our users are provided with useful, reliable and informative emails as and when they require them and these issues could put a stop to this and any future plans we have for email distribution. Please help us to help you and:

* Ensure our emails are not in your spam/junk folder and if they are mark them as 'NOT SPAM'
* Contact your email provider if you expect mail from us but don't receive it
* Unsubscribe properly if you no longer wish to receive emails from us and PLEASE DON'T simply mark our mail as 'junk'

Thanks
Marko

We have been overwhelmed by those who received these updates asking if they could help in some way and have the service return and although we were reluctant we have nevertheless worked on the subscription issue and are now happy to inform everyone that our daily updates is back!.

As per usual, subscribing to the daily email updates is simply a case of entering your email in the "Daily Email Updates" text box which will then require you to confirm your request using a link we will send to your email address. Should you wish to unsubscribe, the process is exactly the same in that you re-enter your email address in the "Daily Email Updates" text box and confirm your request using another link we will send to you via email.

We are still trying to work with Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL to stop them unecessarily blocking mail from us and hope to reach a satisfactory resolution shortly.

A big thank you to all subscribers who showed their support for our service.

Marko

Daily updates for non-members will stop Tue 18th Nov

Unfortunately our daily updates in it's current form will cease on Tuesday 18th November 2008 and will be replaced with a members only much improved version (see below) type newsletter sent on a weekly basis. Over the past year or so we have experienced huge volumes of signups for our daily updates, mostly from non-members. The effect of this is now clear from a few mail providers, in particular Yahoo.

When someone enters their email address to subscribe to our daily updates they are automatically enrolled without confirmation and although clear instructions were given on each email sent on how to unsubscribe to the service we feel that some subscribers may have simply marked our mail as spam after deciding they no longer wish to receive the updates thus causing Yahoo to believe that further mails from us were unsolicited and putting us within a greylist or blacklist. As our daily updates did not require confirmation from the subscriber, it's possible also that our updates were sent to those who didn't request it and therefore, again, our mail would be classed as spam.

Making our newsletter available to members only means upon registration the member has a clear choice whether they want to receive emails from us or not and they can, at any time, remove this permission. Members are also required to validate their email accounts which means our mail can then only be sent to those who have specifically requested it upon registration.

I can only apologise if anyone experiences inconvenience through this issue although we really do have little choice.

If anyone has any questions or concerns regarding this matter, please feel free to reply here and you can also have your say in THIS POST regarding our new planned weekly newsletter and in the meantime we hope to take on the matter once again with Yahoo and with the assistance of our host get a satisfactory resolution to the matter for current and future members.

Here's a screenshot of how our new daily updates will look ...

External URL Scanning on FreewareBB

We've always been careful about what we allow onto FreewareBB, but now we're going even further!. We recently introduced a URL check using WOT (Web Of Trust) which means that before we accept anything from anyone, their URLs are checked as part of the submission process.

Why check the URLs?
We pride ourselves as a family friendly website and this doesn't just include safe downloads, now it includes checks on the authors own website. When freeware is submitted to our site we take a look at the authors website and run the URL through the services mentioned above. If they get the all clear then we continue with the submission process as usual and make the necessary security checks on the download itself. However, if we find they are associated in any way to other less reputable sites, and in particular sites which are known to distribute spyware, malware or viruses, then we reject their submission outright.

How does this affect me?
Most of us nowadays have became used to how the internet works and can take care in our daily browsing activities, but each day new threats immerge and more cunning methods of tricking people into visiting unscrupulous websites appear, therefore it is important to know that the websites you visit are not supporting those sites with dangerous intentions (such as trying to push spyware, malware or viruses to your PC). Because we provide a link to the authors website on our downloads, we want to know that they, like us, are concerned enough about your safety to make the necessary checks on other sites they associate themselves with.

Does that mean you won’t have as many downloads as other sites?
Not necessarily, it simply means that those sites which associate themselves with those known to distribute spyware, adware, etc, will not be published by us. Remember, our policy has always been quality over quantity, with safety being our No.1 priority.

Doesn't this take more time?
You bet it does! But hey, you're definitely worth it

Can I use a URL checking service of some kind?
Yes you can, by simply installing the WOT (Web Of Trust) add-on (completely 100% safe) you too can check every single URL you browse automatically as well as participate in the simple rating of websites you love or hate. The add-on works silently in the background and if you happen to stumble upon a dangerous site, WOT will tell you this and give you the option to back-out or proceed. If you find a dangerous site that isn't yet noted by WOT then as a registered member you can make others aware of this. Visit http://www.mywot.com and grab the add-on. FreewareBB have already received some favourable raves on WOT, and we just know you'll be itching to add to them HERE

Safe Surfing
Kind Regards,
Marko

Freeware recommendations from the world

As the owner of a freeware site, it’s often the case that we’re asked for our recommendations on certain applications and we often give them. It may not always be the case that the most downloaded file would automatically be our choice, but there’s no getting away from the fact that the majority rules. It’s great to be asked for a recommendation and it shows people trust you to make that decision. However, whereas I take pleasure in making a recommendation when asked, I always find it a bit odd when people take it upon themselves to compile the “Top 1 Million freeware apps to have”. The thing that worries me the most about this is that it is often purely based on their own feelings towards a particular freeware application and not necessarily the feelings of others.

So, in contrast to this what I’ve done is to compile a list of freeware software based on our own stats of the most popular freeware downloaded by thousands of people all across the world.

We realise not everyone is into video editing or web development so we’ve created our list based on software most people would or could use in their everyday computing life together with software which everyone should (but not always does) have on their machine. We hope you find this list of use.

AUDIO/CD PLAYERS
Winamp Full 5.541
Nullsoft Winamp is a fast, flexible, high-fidelity music player for Windows.
