When I was first learning how to play poker, I would spend hours studying hands on twoplustwo.com, but looking at the advice given by some of the big posters there, I can’t quite figure out how I learned anything there. Here is a hand I posted on a couple days ago where the analysis given by some regs on the forum was just awful:

Last Thursday was just plain nasty but with it being the day before a holiday it was, as expected, extremely light volume. Chart wise, the indexes look to be in the process of breaking out a right shoulder in an intermediate head and shoulders top. But until things become clearer big picture wise I won’t push trades in individual stocks. Right now I am looking for possible shorts in individual names if we get a bounce, but I will remain opened minded. Sorry for the lack of picks, but when it comes to trading many times the best alternative is to protect your capital and wait for a spot where the odds in your favor.

I am still trying to drag together material from previous posts on other sites but a good book on getting started with a similar style to the way I trade is James DePorre’s Shark Investing. It gives a good introduction into technical analysis and is a great background to understanding the psychology of the market and advantages of the small investor.

Here’s a look at the MLB lines of interest for today. These aren’t all plays, just the lines that stuck out to me..

Royals at Tigers -137
Tigers are getting a lot of action here. Overrated Galaraga on the mound for Detroit, while the underrated Meche is pitching for the Royals. Looks good.

Washington at Colorado -190
Same Nats shit, different day. They have actually been coming through lately but I’m always cautious with the Nats. Stammen on the mound against 10 win Marquis…

Oakland at Boston -190
Bret Anderson is pitching for the A’s and he is ridiculously underrated. He hasn’t really performed this year thus far though. Smoltz is on the mound for the BloSox. This one is pretty hard to resist. Smoltz did throw a stinker last time out so you can definitely argue for a pass.

San Diego at Arizona -161
I’m not really interested in a side here. The over/under is a ridick 10.5. Pretty shocking considering Garland is pitching for the D’bags. Hes their number two. Take the over.

Atlanta at Chicago Cubs -110
Awfully short line for the usually extremely public Cubs. Jair Jurrjens (Triple J) is on the mound for the Braves tonight. Hes been really good this year. Love the Braves here.

Pittsburgh at Houston -159
I like the spot for the Pirates going up against the overrated suckass Mike Hampton. I’d like this line to be a little shorter though. Probably a pass.

Texas at LA Angels -151
The Rangers are kind of my team so I’m a bit biased on this one. They are getting hot after a little down run. F the Angels.

Florida at San Francisco -156
Matt Cain. Do I need to say anything else? The run line doesn’t look bad. Can’t really recommend this as its pretty square but young Matthew is a badass.

Milwaukee looked good against Big Z and the Cubs.

St. Louis at Cincinatti - Who is Homer Bailey? At about even money? Sounds good…

Atlanta at Washington - Bad team with a short line at home. Detwiler is decent on the mound. I don’t know though, I hate betting on the Nats.

LA Dodgers at San Diego - I like this one a lot. Fading the Dodgers on the road. Only gotta win like 45% of these.

Seattle at Boston - Wakefield is on the mound for the Sox and this number is pretty low. Seattle +107. Seems like the books aren’t too hot on ole’ Timmy.

One of the big differences between a 2/4 reg and a good 5/10 player is pretty well shown in this hand. A good 5/10 player has the ability to realize that he would check back most of his A-high’s on the flop so he is basically repping a Jack that he bet the flop and then went for pot control on the turn. A bad 2/4 reg thinks omg an ACE! Great bluff card! Think again, buddy.
