Sometime around March of this year, I chanced upon my friend Gibbs Cadiz’s blog entry about a musical called The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.  I really wanted to watch the show but my busy schedule made me miss it. Then I forgot about it.

I only remembered it about two or three weeks ago when the Scripps National Spelling Bee Finals aired on ESPN. I’m not really an adept speller but when I was younger, I’ve always wanted to participate in one. I can recall my younger self browsing through dictionaries and encyclopedias searching for difficult words to memorize and familiarize myself with. One of them was triskaidekaphobia – the fear of the number 13.  I now forget the language of origin and alternative pronunciations.  Oh, those were my good old days.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a one act musical comedy with music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin. The show centers around a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School (however, Putnam County, NY does have a village called Putnam Valley). Six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally-quirky grown-ups.

After watching the Scripps National Finals, I felt bad because I missed The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. An hour or so later, I shook it off and went on with my life.

Until last week when I received a text message from

an unregistered number.  It was Lawyn from Atlantis asking me if I was available for a spot as a guest speller for the Bee rehearsals the day after.  (Apparently, my friends Hogi and Gibbs volunteered my name). I checked my schedule and was saddened when I saw that I was not going to be available that day. I sent regrets to Lawyn, but at the back of my mind, I was finding a way to clear my 2:00PM schedule just so I could be a guest speller.  Luckily, the gay musical gods have been reading my mind and my schedule cleared right away.

Armed with some hastily-researched (Googled, actually) words and spelling bee contestant lines (“language of origin please”, “definition please”, “could you please repeat the word?”, “is there another pronunciation?”), I excitedly went to the rehearsal studio.

Before the “show” started, I and three other guest spellers were briefed about what we were going to do.  The instructions were plain and simple: just ask for the definition and pronunciation (only), just go with the flow, and don’t act – just be yourself. I found it quite disappointing that I would never get to use my favorite “Language of origin please” line but found it quite a relief upon hearing the “don’t act” instruction because my acting skills are in the challenged department. I know this because I got a very low grade in my Theater 107: Acting class in UP.

  The show began (sans costumes and lights) and all of us guest spellers were seated at the “audience” area. We did not know how or when we were going to be part of the show.  All we knew was that cast members were going to lead us (not into temptation but) to our places.  Stage left, stage right, backstage – it did not matter.  Just watch, wait, and have fun. I will not go and tell you the sequence of the show because it’s definitely way better if you watched the show yourself!

I was the second guest speller to be eliminated but I did get a chance to spell two words. The instructions were right on, I did not need to act!  When my name was called, a cast member just picked me up (I wish he brought me home, lol) and brought me to my seat. Lucky for me, I got a seat beside one of my theater crushes, Felix Rivera! I could not look at him or make small talk because I’m very shy (charot!) around my crushes. I just watched as things unfolded – from the stage. All throughout my stint, I just looked around the stage and the other spellers as they did their thing.  That’s the beauty of the show – it feels so real and so surreal that you’re left wondering what’s going to happen next. As a guest speller, I actually felt the pressure of waiting for my turn and being unable to spell a word correctly.  Besides, I’m a very competitive person and my imminent elimination made me more nervous (I felt like I would be elliminated before the show reached its climax). I got to perform with the cast members in a number that I sure would not forget! And boy that was crazy! I have always wanted to perform onstage in a musical but my singing prowess is not fit for everyone to listen to. The “dance” number made me feel as if one of my dreams has been fulfilled.

Then it was my turn to spell. My name was called. Hesitating briefly, I walked nervously towards the microphone. The host, Ms. Perretti (played by Cathy Azanza-Dy), gave an introduction of me – a made-up one – which cracked the hell out of me.  I tried to ignore it but I couldn’t help myself and let out a smirk. My first word was very easy. When I asked the official word pronouncer – Vice-principal Douglas Panch (played by Joel Trinidad) – for the definition, I got so intimidated!  He’s a nasty man. The character that is. The words given to guest spellers (and their “background information”) are not really part of the script.  I think they’re improvised onstage by the actors. I really couldn’t help myself but laugh because of the punches that Panch throws!

My second word was surely impossible for anyone to spell. I could not even remember it!  Ms. Perretti’s introduction of me this time around was really hilarious that my voice became hoarse and I felt like there was a frog in my throat.  I spelled the word incorrectly – which made me slightly disappointed at myself.  Then the gay musical gods decided to make fun of me!  My mind went blank.  I forgot where to go and what to do.  After the first guest speller was eliminated, I knew what I was supposed to do when my time came. But no, I forgot! I went away from the mic, turned my back and walked to the back, looked around and then wanted the earth to swallow me. To my aid came Comfort Counselor Mitch Mahoney (played by Noel Rayos).  He gave me a juice drink and escorted me offstage.

Being a guest speller is really a challenge!  You would need a lot of courage and a pinch of craziness to survive it!  After my elimination, I happily sat back, relaxed and enjoyed the rest of the show.  And now I’m looking forward to watching it onstage!  The rerun of the Philippines production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee begins today!

The long wait is over! Project Runway Season 6 will start airing in the US soon.  After finally moving out of Bravo and into Lifetime, the much-awaited sixth season of this television show will start airing on August 20.

16 talented designers will compete for slots at the New York Fashion Week as well as for prize money and the honor of being called the Next Big Thing in fashion.  So who are the designers? We will all find out on July 9 on Project Runway’s official website!

Plus!  More exciting news!  Models of the Runway, a new companion series to Project Runway, will also be aired after each episode. Each 30-minute episode will give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the reality competition – from the models’ perspective. If you could take a pill that would turn you straight, would you take it?

If you know me well (or not even that well), you would know my answer to this preposterous question.

Before I go into detail and expound my answer, let me pose these questions: “Aren’t pills taken to alleviate pain or to cure diseases? If so, does that mean being gay is a disease?”  I do not believe so. Now that that’s clear, let me elaborate on my answer to this hypothetical question.

Had I been asked this say, 10 or 15 years ago, I would have considered taking the pill – if something of the sort actually existed.  This is only me though.  We have to take into consideration other gay men out there, I mean “in” there, who may be thinking of taking the pill.  I guess I am one of the lucky ones who have a solid support group of friends and family.  Also, the society I am living in makes it a lot easier for me to say that I would never un-gay myself.

If my environment and the circumstances around it were different, would I take the pill and “un-gay” myself? I wouldn’t. You see I wouldn’t be who I am as a person now had I been heterosexual.  My answer has nothing to do with love and relationships.  It may have something to do with cocks though. Seriously, I would never trade being gay for being straight.  I would not have it any other way. I love the Gay Way! I wouldn’t be as competitive a person as I am now if I were straight.  I wouldn’t also be too much of a hard worker.  As a young boy, I had this strange feeling that I had to work so hard to prove my worth.  In my teens, I felt the pressure of fitting in.  I wanted to be “one of the boys” and did whatever I could so people would not notice my sexual inclinations and tendencies. I felt like I had to prove to the world that in spite of and despite my sexuality, I was someone and I will be someone.

While I cannot always say that my sexuality defines who I am as a person, I can say that my being gay has played a big part in broadening my horizon and in my blossoming into a wonderful young man. After all, being gay has helped hone me to become the fabulous, witty and smart person that I am right now. Charot.

And duh, if I took that pill, this blog would not have existed. Bakla ako and forever I will be! May reklamo?

The “Day of Silence” will commence after the UP Pride March around the campus.  The march in the University of the Philippines in Diliman is to protest the discrimination, harassment and abuse  – in effect the silencing – faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and their allies in schools.

The Day of Silence, a project originally started by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) of America, will be adapted and will be held during school hours at UP Diliman. Over a hundred participants will be silent on June 30, 2009, wearing stickers and passing out statements that partly read: “Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence, a youth movement protesting the harassment, prejudice, and  discrimination faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies in schools.

“The Day of Silence,” according to local organizer and UP Student Regent Charisse Bernadine Bañez, “is especially relevant to UP because “in Diliman, students are faced with organizational nightmares of the proposed ‘2009 Code of Student  Conduct’ not to mention the dictatorial and fascist tendencies of the Gloria Arroyo Administration with the passage of Con-Ass in the lower-house” Marcel Punongbayan of ProGAY UP Diliman hopes that the event will work towards ending some of the silence and hatred students face.

Present statistics found that more than 4 out of 5 LGBT students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment at school and 29% report missing at least a day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety. The Day of Silence is one way students and their allies are making anti-LGBT bullying, harassment and name-calling unacceptable in Philippine schools. About the Day of Silence The Day of Silence, a project of the General Assemble of Gender Advocates (GAGA), University of the Philippines Diliman Student Council –Gender Committee, Office of the Student Regent, STAND UP, GABRIELA UP-Diliman, and ProGAY & LesboND UP Diliman, is a campus wide, student-led event during which hundreds of college students take action to bring awareness to the bullying, name-calling, and harassment of lesbian,

You know how to run, right? If you do, then here is your chance do it and do it with a cause!

Everyone is invited to join the Run For Home: Globe-Ayala Land City Run for Habitat for Humanity.  It is the first ever running event in the country that will feature the use of the disposable electronic timing chips to track running time.

The run is slated on July 19, 2009 (Sunday) at 5:00 AM at the Bonifacio Global City.  There will be 3-kilometer, 5-kilometer, 10-kilometer and 21-kilometer runs. So whoever you are and whatever your running capability is, there is a run just right for you (I’m joining the 3-km run.)! The route cover areas in the Bonifacio Global City to the Makati Central Business District.

Aside from supporting the Habitat for Humanity to benefit the Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig Project, this run is made more interesting by the use of the disposable electronic timing chips:

Globe brings the disposable electronic timing chips to the Philippines to track the running time of participants to the RUN FOR HOME – a first for a running event in the country. These are used in popular international marathons where the chip is attached to a runner’s shoelace and in triathlons where it is placed as an ankle bracelet.

US President Barrack Obama has recently issued a statement acknowledging and declaring June 2009 as “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month” in the United States.

Will we ever have our own? I doubt it, but I’m hopeful.

Here are some highlights from Obama’s statement that I find quite interesting:

• The LGBT rights movement has achieved great progress, but there is more work to be done. LGBT youth should feel safe to learn without the fear of harassment, and LGBT families and seniors should be allowed to live their lives with dignity and respect.
• At the international level, I have joined efforts at the United Nations to decriminalize homosexuality around the world.
• We must also commit ourselves to fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic by both reducing the number of HIV infections and providing care and support services to people living with HIV/AIDS across the United States.
• During LGBT Pride Month, I call upon the LGBT community, the Congress, and the American people to work together to promote equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Forty years ago, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City resisted police harassment that had become all too common for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Out of this resistance, the LGBT rights movement in America was born. During LGBT Pride Month, we commemorate the events of June 1969 and commit to achieving equal justice under law for LGBT Americans.

LGBT Americans have made, and continue to make, great and lasting contributions that continue to strengthen the fabric of American society. There are many well-respected LGBT leaders in all professional fields, including the arts and business communities. LGBT Americans also mobilized the Nation to respond to the domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic and have played a vital role in broadening this country’s response to the HIV pandemic.

Due in no small part to the determination and dedication of the LGBT rights movement, more LGBT Americans are living their lives openly today than ever before. I am proud to be the first President to appoint openly LGBT candidates to Senate-confirmed positions in the first 100 days of an Administration. These individuals embody the best qualities we seek in public servants, and across my Administration — in both the White House and the Federal agencies — openly LGBT employees are doing their jobs with distinction and professionalism.

The LGBT rights movement has achieved great progress, but there is more work to be done. LGBT youth should feel safe to learn without the fear of harassment, and LGBT families and seniors should be allowed to live their lives with dignity and respect.

My Administration has partnered with the LGBT community to advance a wide range of initiatives. At the international level, I have joined efforts at the United Nations to decriminalize homosexuality around the world. Here at home, I continue to support measures to bring the full spectrum of equal rights to LGBT Americans. These measures include enhancing hate crimes laws, supporting civil unions and Federal rights for LGBT couples, outlawing discrimination in the workplace, ensuring adoption rights, and ending the existing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in a way that strengthens our Armed Forces and our national security. Thanks to my Facebook friends who are well-connected, I finally found out who this model is!

Apparently, he is a 20-year old (born February 27, 1989) Venezuelan model (he won in the Gran Modelo de Venezuela) who’s here in Manila (but a friend tells me has has already left the country)  for some modeling projects.

According to his ModelMayhem profile, Leonardo lives in downtown Miami.  He stands at 5′11, weighs 150 lbs, has a shoes size of 10 (10!  big feet! you know what they say about men wiht big feet? They have big socks).

His natural hair color is brown and his natural eye color is hazel.

Leo (as I like to fondly call him and pretend we actually know each other) is also a photographer and actually takes some really great photos.

In the Philippines, he was handled by model agency IDEAL People and he has worked for Robinsons Department Store, SM Department Store, Cherokee Jeans (eh?), Bench, Penshoppe and in TV Commercials for Globe, Nescafe, and The bar.

Leo also appears in a fashion spread on Garage Magazine’s June/July Issue (with Matteo Guidicelli on the cover).

Another interesting fact about Leonardo Corredor is that a porn video of him pleasuring himself was leaked on the Internet! That, I have to see! Lol!

Lately I’ve been back to my old habits of having a crush on and fantasizing a future with what I call “The Unlikely”.

“The Unlikely” are those hot men whom I have deep feelings for (or so I like myself to believe) but are very unlikely to be mine. It is close to impossible to have them date me (or for me to date them!).

This is due to reasons which I have already dealt with in the past and have finally accepted as something close to fact: they are straight, they’re gay but won’t go for guys like me, or simply because they don’t know I exist.

Before my last relationship, I was this big fanboy of too many stars (and pseudo-stars) and good-looking boys from everywhere that I ended up jaded, frustrated, disappointed and sad because I never had that chance with that guy. Because I was too skinny and too ugly for them. Because no matter what I did, they were really just out of my league. Blech.

“Mangarap Ka” was the running theme song of my life then.  Ambisyosang Palaka!  That was me.  But now, I just content myself with looking at these men and drooling over them for a few minutes, then it’s over.  I now know that it takes about a day or two (sometimes less than a day) before I finally move on and wipe the drool off my mouth and face.

Tapos na ang maliligayang araw ni Claudine Barretto and Mark Anthony Fernandez kaya dapat lang matapos na rin ang kahibangan ko sa mga lalakeng hindi naman magiging akin.  Life goes on.

So how am I dealing with this now? Two words:

FARM TOWN!
