The Performance That Cowed Cowell

Susan Boyle, an unassuming 47-year-old woman who lives with her cat and confesses she’s never even been kissed, wowed the judges, including Simon Cowell, on the U.K. show “Britain’s Got Talent, with her beautiful rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” from the Broadway hit “Les Miserable.” She brought the audience to their feet and stunned the judges.

Watch her incredible performance here.

An unemployed church volunteer from a tiny Scottish village, she joined the choir when she was just 12 and has been singing ever since. But when she took the stage last Saturday to audition for the judges before a large audience, the judges, especially the critical Cowell were skeptical of the woman with the frizzy brown hair and bushy eyebrows.

Boyle was undaunted. When Cowell asked how old she was, she replied, “I am 47,” then shook her hips and added, “and that’s just one side of me.”

Boyle confessed to Cowell that her dream was to be a professional singer as big as British singer-actress Elaine Paige. When Cowell asked why her dream hasn’t worked out before, she responded, “I haven’t been given the chance before.”

Now that’s she been given the chance to live the dream – the judges gave her three yes’s to return to compete on the show – the virtuous Boyle is poised to become the next pop sensation.

At the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey and producer Dana Brunetti spoke with ABC News about their latest partnership and the passion they have for emerging filmmakers.

“I’ve always had this belief that if you do well in the industry that you want to go into then it’s your obligation to spend a lot of time being a mentor and getting encouragement and support to those that are starting out,” Spacey said.

In 2002, with the idea of providing an evolving platform for directors, writers and other talent in the film industry, Spacey and Brunetti founded TriggerStreet.com, an online social network named after American cowboy star Roy Rogers’ horse, Trigger. As a boy, Spacey said he dreamed of building a movie theater on Rogers’ ranch on Trigger Street. While the theater was never built, Spacey channeled his vision into a project that could make many other young peoples' dreams come true.

Now, with hundreds of thousands of members, TriggerStreet is providing an environment and avenue of communication between the barriers of Hollywood and emerging talent. Without the industry's agents, attorneys and the savvy deal makers, Spacey and Brunetti say, young talent can get lost and discouraged.

“What’s happening on TriggerStreet is an example of what’s going to happen to the entire industry," Brunetti said. "People are going to be able to connect and collaborate online … have their films screened, reviewed and critiqued and sold."

A new partnership between TriggerStreet and Stella Artois has energized Spacey and Brunetti's mission. Announced last week, the Stella Artois Short Film Project will provide a $50,000 cash award to one filmmaker who submits an entry to TriggerStreet. The film, which must be less than 10 minutes long, will be judged by the TriggerStreet.com community as well as a panel of actors, directors and producers.

“When I was 13 or 14 years old and I was dreaming about building the Trigger Street Theater, Trigger Street to me was endless. It was a road that would go on forever,” said Spacey. Now, with his project, he can build that road for budding filmmakers.

The latest report, published originally in the tabloid the National Enquirer, describes how Swayze stopped all medical treatment after doctors told him there was little more they could do to halt his illness.

Reps for the "The Dirty Dancing" actor and star of A&E’s "The Beast" told ABCNews.com that the Enquirer story is untrue and that Swayze continues to receive treatment for pancreatic cancer.

This is not the first time Swayze has had to quell rumors that he was on his death bed. In December he released a statement to ABC News in which he called the tabloids a "thorn in my side" for "consistently reporting lies and false information about me and those close to me."

"And latest," he wrote, "they're reporting that I'm on my last legs and saying goodbye to my tearful family!"

"Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive disease, and from the moment I was diagnosed, I knew I was in for the fight of my life," Swayze continued. "It's a battle, and so far, I've been winning. I'm one of the lucky few that responds well to treatment. It's upsetting that the shoddy and reckless reporting from these publications cast a negative shadow on the positive and good fight I'm fighting. For me, my family, and those close to me, it amounts to downright emotional cruelty. That makes me angry when hope is so precious."

In an exclusive interview with Barbara Walters, Swayze said he has been "going through hell" during his year-long battle with cancer. "And I've only seen the beginning of it," he told her.

Swayze was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer last January after a battery of tests revealed a malignant tumor in his midsection and a tiny mass on his liver.

After embarking on an aggressive course of traditional chemotherapy along with the experimental drug Vatalanib, he began filming his new TV series "The Beast" in July. The pace was grueling, 12-hour days for five months, mostly in cold, nighttime conditions.

Recently, Swayze and his wife of 33 years, Lisa Niemi, announced they were penning a memoir.

The Golden Globe Awards don’t air until Sunday night, but a glitch on the show’s Web site may have let the cat out of the bag a few days early.

The award show’s site was updated Thursday to reflect Anne Hathaway as the winner for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Drama award, for which she is nominated for her role in "Rachel Getting Married."

A star was placed next to the actress’ name on the show’s online list of nominees – a symbol ordinarily used to indicate the winner in each category after the ceremony is held.

But instead of appearing after the envelope was opened and the statuette handed out, the site was prematurely changed to reflect Hathaway as the winner.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which organizes the Golden Globes, released a statement on its Web site chalking up the Hathaway win to an error by a member of the Web team.

“In the process of preparing for Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Web team inadvertently marked a nominee as a winner,” read the statement. “The mistake was immediately corrected.”

Approached by reporters on the red carpet at last night’s VH1 Critics' Choice Awards – where the actress did, in fact, take home the Best Actress award – Hathaway said she wasn’t thinking too much about the Globe gaffe.

“I think it was just a glitch,” Hathaway told "Access Hollywood." "I don’t really read into it and I don’t think anyone else should.”

Hathaway is nominated for Best Actress for her performance in "Rachel Getting Married" and is up against Angelina Jolie for "Changeling," Meryl Streep for "Doubt," Kristin Scott Thomas for "I’ve Loved You So Long" and Kate Winslet for "Revolutionary Road."

There may be five major movies opening Christmas Day, but the chance of any of them becoming the biggest box-office hit of the year is about as big as the chance of Santa being real.

"There are other days, like the day 'The Dark Knight' opened, that'll blow everything else into the weeds," said Paul Dergarabedian, who heads up box-office analysis agency Media by Numbers. "How big Christmas is for the industry depends on the movies that are in the marketplace and how well they do."

This yearthose movies are "Marley & Me" (starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson); "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett); "Valkyrie" (Tom Cruise); "Bedtime Stories" (Adam Sandler, Keri Russell); and "The Spirit" (Scarlett Johanssen, Eva Mendes). "Doubt," starring Meryl Streep and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, goes into wide release today after opening Dec. 12.

There is, of course, a reason studios chose to open movies on Christmas Day.

"You've got a captive audience; a whole group of people who are home, off work and out of school, and they need something to do after their Christmas morning festivities if they're celebrating," Dergarabedian said. "It's corny, but it's Hollywood's Christmas gift to the public. And in a way, it's a gift to the industry as well. It's a marketing platform. It offers a great opportunity for the studios to get their movies into the marketplace with a big splash."

Sometimes it works: When it opened on Christmas Day 2001, "Ali," starring Will Smith, banked $10.2 million in 24 hours and 2002's "Catch Me If You Can" made $9.9 million on its Dec. 25 opening day. And it's not just feel-good fare that fares well: l Last year, "Alien vs. Predator: Requiem" made $9.5 million during its Christmas opening.

"Typically, Christmas Day generates better box office than the average midweek nonholiday day," said Dergarabedian. "You've got five big release newcomers and those are going to generate some heat."

So even if the industry doesn't break records today, it'll probably earn itself a nice holiday bonus.

Sheila Marikar

This morning Michael Lohan responded to a blog his 23-year-old starlet daughter, Lindsay, posted on her MySpace page Tuesday in which she wrote, "my father just let my family and i know, amongst others that he had another child after my little sister Aliana, or maybe he had it before Aliana?? either way, he cheated on my mother and that really sucks … MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!"

"First of all, I don’t believe that comment or post was made by Lindsay," Michael Lohan told ABCNews.com. "I know for a fact that Samantha [Ronson, Lindsay's girlfriend] posts a lot of things on Lindsay’s blog. In the past, Samantha’s even texted me from Lindsay’s phone telling me it was Lindsay. It’s a way for her to create more turmoil with Lindsay’s family. Ever since Samantha became part of her life, it seems Lindsay’s drifted farther and farther away from what’s important. I just pray that next year, she sees what’s important. I don’t like where Samantha’s taken her.

"Is Lindsay making movies anymore? Is she singing anymore? Is she doing the things she was blessed with? No. She’s running around to clubs with Samantha," he continued.

That Michael Lohan had a child outside of his relationship with ex-wife/Lindsay's mom Dina Lohan is not news. In June, he told OK! magazine he'd had a tryst with another woman 14 years ago, when he and Dina were separated, and "years later [the woman] contacted me, convincing me that I was the only person she was with and that she had my child."

But besides chastising her father, in her blog, Lindsay Lohan sent a message of holiday cheer to fellow on-the-mend star Britney Spears.

"I feel like Britney Spears is an amazing talent, and she has gone through a lot, (just as i have) in the public eye," she wrote. "YAY Britney for just being you and still following through with your dreams. i know i am a bit late in writing about this record since it came out already, but better late than never!!!! :)"

Happy holidays, Hollywood.
